As soon as I first saw LC tease her debut novel on Instagram, I knew this was an ARC I had to sign up for. I’m a sucker for a Beauty and the Beast retelling and she absolutely delivered on her promise of a romantasy with Beauty and the Beast X Bridgerton vibes.
When Alora, a notorious thief, is recruited by the beast prince for a dangerous heist, she finds herself navigating a court of deadly secrets and confronting the mystery of her own past. I was so invested in Alora’s journey from the very first pages, and I can’t wait to see how she continues to grow throughout the series. The tension between Taran and Alora was absolutely incredible and I fell in love with the supporting characters and all their relationships!
This was such a fantastic debut and I can’t wait for everyone to be able to enjoy it!

Omg omg omg OMG
I AM SO GLAD I FOUND THIS AUTHOR ON BOOKTHREADS AND GOT MY HANDS ON THIS ARC!!!!!
This is seriously the best slow burn romantasy I have read in MONTHS, with chemistry through the freaking roof. I signed up for the arc at “beauty and the beast retelling” but HOLY MOSES I was not PREPARED for how imaginative and original the story would be. This is seriously the coolest take on a beauty and the beast story I could ever have hoped for.
Heist thief on her “one last job” gets roped into a new “one last job”: location? Other kingdom’s palace. Client? Beast Prince. Her mark? The king.
Boom 🤯
The characters are soooo likable, the slow burn is INTENNNNSE (like just them locking eyes had me 💀)
And Taran brings touch her and die to WHOLE NEW LEVELS. Smell her and die. Exist too close and die 😂 I’m not an Edward Cullen girlie but the “I gotta stay tf away from you bc I just cannot with your personalized heroin smell rn” WORKS for Taran 🤌🏼🥵
I love Alora and how she’s not 18, 4’11 and waify but somehow also booby and good at martial arts and insanely angry at the world. She’s actually now that I think about it a bit like Anne Hathaway’s cat woman in a lot of ways. A tall, feline, mysterious, 25 yr old thief; highly trained and always in control, but not snappy/acerbic and overly sassy. She is not the tired cliché crabby-stabby. She’s motivated to figure out her past, fiercely determined to fulfill her goals, but not bitter or angry. I love that about her.
The world is so detailed and fleshed out and vividly described—I loved how culturally vibrant it was as well, using names from all types of Asian/middle eastern languages instead of just standard European fare, and not just a ton of white characters.
I thought the magic/political system at first would be hard to understand but the worldbuilding is so effortless here that it’s seamlessly explained without being clunkily spelled out in on-the-nose dialogue or forced inner-monologue. People seriously do NOT realize how much of a skill this is and how RARE it is in the romantasy space right now! I am feral ( 😉 IYKYK) for the next book already, and I am BEGGING of you all to read this when it comes out April 8 on KU bc it is truly a gem of a book. I was getting so discouraged about ever finding a really good romantasy again and this one was truly stunning. I hope this woman writes a billion more series after this one bc she has a GIFT 🙏🏼

I had the pleasure to receive an ARC for this book, and I am grateful because I had a great time reading this.
The slow burn was great, I loved the character and world building and felt like "part of the gang" by the end of the book. It's well written and I'm excited to read the rest of the series.

The only reason I didn't give it a full 5-star is because I felt that Alora, who's not childish at all through the whole book, acted a bit out of character when Tare "lied" to her. IMO it was a third act breakup-ish that I could have gone without.

Wow!!! I had the absolute pleasure of ARC reading this debut novel and it was everything I hoped it would be and more! This was definitely a 5 ⭐ read in my opinion! It was so different then anything else I've read in a while with a magic system that was subtle and unique. The whole Apex/Human dynamics, the suspense, the intrigue, the tantalizing slow burn romance - it had me hooked right from the start and didn't let go, especially with that ending! And that "eyes on me" moment had me feeling absolutely feral!! 🔥🔥🔥
It definitely gives Beauty and the Beast with Bridgerton vibes but mixes it all up with a splash of Oceans 11 for a combo that is sure to satisfy all the book cravings.

When I first found L.C Whitehouse, it was on threads. She has posted the trope list and said she was looking for arc readers for her beauty and the beast retelling and I'm pretty sure I signed up as fast as I could when sign ups opened.
This book....WAS SOO GOOD!
It has a kind of magic system I have NEVER read mixed with a slow burn he falls first romance (which we all know that I'm obsessed with) 😍🥵
Alora is feisty and snarky and bad ass.
Taran is protective and broody and strong.
And I stg I fell in love with both of them throughout this book.
I dont want to give too much away since this was an arc but it releases April 8th and I definitely think you should read it once it does come out!

I was so pleased to be an ARC reader for this absolute delight of a book.
This book is *exactly* what readers mean when they say they want a romantasy read: This story was easy to read, had accessible worldbuilding, relatable characters, and was gloriously crushable.
Only two chapters in, I was hooked, as there was already a focus on friendship, food, and garments with pockets. I knew at that point that it was going to be a solid read.
If you love a MMC in denial (but who is soooo obviously down bad), heist vibes, found family, and forbidden romance, this is the book for you.
This story really set up the rest of the forthcoming series well (I am desperate for the next book!). I am interested to see what happens with the rebellion that was hinted at, if we'll get another heist, and what will happen as the crew adventures through dangerous waters to Thalassar.
I will definitely be reading Book 2, An Ear for Secrets, and (with all due respect to the author's time and writing process, particularly considering Book 1 is yet to be released) cannot wait for it to be available.

A Taste for Lies is the first book in this fantasy romance series, and I for one can’t wait to read the next book. The way the world was built and all of the magic, characters, and twist and turns was incredible.
Taran gives me Darcy vibes if he was a handsome beast. Specifically with the way he is with our girl, Alora in the beginning of the book. “Against my better judgement” vibes and all.
Taran and Alora are just perfection. Taran with his grumpy behavior and Alora with her sassy mouth. I love that they team up for a heist and Taran has no choice but to continue to get roped in by Alora. She is just *mwah*

“Such a dichotomy, this beast who is also a prince” This book was described as beauty and the beast retelling meets bridgerton, it drew me in and I so enjoyed this read! While stepping into a new fantasy world, I found it easy to read with characters who reminded me of some of my favourites (or less favourite characters - Cressida Cowper anyone?) from other books or episodes. With a found family heist team vibe, and the tension between our thief and the beast prince had me hooked “You’re unhinged”…”Never claimed not to be.” From the heist to the final page I couldn’t read fast enough. I devoured this adventure and I can’t wait for the second book!

OH. MY. GOODNESS. I adored this book and I feel honoured that I was able to be an ARC reader and part of the street team. I had such a hard time putting it down. The story was intriguing, it was a world I haven’t experienced before, and the characters were all so believable and I instantly fell in love with them. This has for sure been one of my top reads this year so far. And to be quite honest, I liked it infinitely more than Onyx Storm. If this book doesn’t become an instant hit, I will be SHOCKED. I CANNOT WAIT to read the next books!!!!!

Wow 🤯 if you’re looking for a book that grabs you from page one, is a totally different spin on beauty and the beast THIS IS THE ONE! Thief meets prince! One that is at the top of her game! But also has no memories from the first 15 years of her life.
Alora the MFC has so much fire! What I found admirable about her character was when proven she spoke before she truly thought she recognized her mistakes. She may not wear her heart for all to see, but she will do anything for those she cares about. Her story pulled me in, wanting her to find answers, and more.
Now the prince breast wow! Taran he has a story of his own that pulled at my heart strings and seriously hoped the ones responsible met the beast. He’s possessive and when it comes to Alora will stop at nothing. I couldn’t help but rooting for Taran, from the character they met!
The side characters are fantastic!
This is the first book and it does end on a cliffhanger BUT seriously don’t let that stop you! This is one book that will give you an opportunity to escape into a whole different world with where there are Elite and the Apex.

This book is for readers like me, who just like to wade in the romantasy genre waters (due to being easily intimidated by complex world building and name pronunciation.) A perfect balance of fantasy and romance and an engaging plot that keeps you in suspense. While providing an escape, it should not go unnoticed that A Taste for Lies also serves as a parallel to the inequalities faced by marginalized communities of today.
This book ends on a cliffhanger and does it ever leave a reader wanting more!! Overall, it is a fantastic debut from LC Whitehouse and I need book 2 in my hands before I, myself, turn feral!

I received an ARC to read for this book. A mix of Bridgerton and Beauty and the Beast, renowned guild thief Alora is taken for a spin when she is caught during a heist by the beast prince. Instead of ending her life, Alora is shocked when she is offered another heist, with the prince’s father, the king, as the mark. As the mission gets deadlier, the prince and Alora get to know each other more deeply. Can the two survive the mission, and their budding romance?
This was absolutely fantastic! The descriptions, the tension, the friendships, I loved it. The twists in this story was so wonderfully done, and I was kicking my feet every time Alora and the prince were together. Did I stay up until almost 3am to finish this? Absolutely. Do I regret any of it? Absolutely not. I cannot wait for more from this author.

This book was so much fun! I will always get excited for a heist story.
I really liked the pacing of this story and was pretty much hooked from the start. The story is 1st person, dual POV of Alora and Taran but more of the chapters are from Alora's perspective, which absolutely makes sense story wise.
I really liked both main characters and their growth throughout the story. The chemistry between them was great.
The main storyline wrapped up well but the ending definitely left me eager to read the next book!

Secondly - HURRY UP AND WRITE THE SECOND BOOK!!!!
Oh my gosh! I LOVED and DEVOURED this book. When I saw LC describe this novel as 'Beauty and the Beast' meets 'Bridgerton', I knew it was for me. But it was honestly so much better than I ever imagined! Obsessed is an understatement.
I loved the characters - they were extremely likable and I really enjoyed learning about them.
The world and magic system were both really interesting and easy to follow.
The slow burn, the suspense, the chemistry between the characters - everything - just perfection.
I can not recommend this book enough.

Wow, I knew this book was going to be good but I underestimated how good it really was going to be! 😍 I absolutely loved this book!
The foreshadowing was great, the plot was fabulous, and all the characters had so much depth.
One of my favorite things about fantasy books is the new and interesting world, and this one hit it out of the park! Fascinating and just different without being too complicated or overwhelming.

In the BEST way.
The way I am in love with these characters. I can't even tell you the depths they have dug into my soul!
Alora is such a living contradiction of strong, independent and badass while at the same time having a mysterious past that haunts her with every breath.
Taran is the most resilient and powerful black sheep of a royal family while also being driven feral by his inner beast when it comes to HER. They both have big plans that only grow in complexity when their worlds collide.
I cannot get enough of this story and as a bonus - I fell in love with Taran's 'brother' Carter - he is everything you want in a incredibly hot and knows it but is still charming AF side character. His one liners will have you dying but also probably fanning yourself 😉🔥🖤
This book was incredibly exciting with so many intriguing characters - the story lines from here feel nearly ENDLESS and for me that is exactly what I love. The book has enough going on that the end doesn't leave you disappointed with too many questions but more like eyes open to what could be next.

The way I am in love with these characters. I can't even tell you the depths they have dug into my soul!
Alora is such a living contradiction of strong, independent and badass while at the same time having a mysterious past that haunts her with every breath.
Taran is the most resilient and powerful black sheep of a royal family while also being driven feral by his inner beast when it comes to HER. They both have big plans that only grow in complexity when their worlds collide.
I cannot get enough of this story and as a bonus - I fell in love with Taran's 'brother' Carter - he is everything you want in a incredibly hot and knows it but is still charming AF side character. His one liners will have you dying but also probably fanning yourself 😉🔥🖤

I devoured this book! From the moment I hit 13%, I was completely hooked and couldn’t put it down for two days. The fast pace made it super easy to read, and I loved the unique magic system. The chemistry between the FMC and MMC was fantastic (the slow burn was burning), and the writing was beautiful. I saw someone describe this as exactly what we want in a romantasy, and I couldn’t agree more.
I loved Alora as our FMC, I really appreciated that she asked the important questions when she had them, and even better, our MMC actually answered, though he still has some secrets to share.
I can’t wait for book two!

Bingeable perfection - Our FMC is skilled, cool & has secrets. MMC has a beastly reputation, stunning looks & can yearn as hard as any shadow daddy.
I loved the storyline, I love the side characters, the world they live in, THE LONGING - I was genuinely excited to see if they realised what we already knew.
This is the perfect airport/beach read, you'll lose hours without realising it and enjoy every minute. I need more. I want book two yesterday please.

This is such a cool and new fantasy world that I got so wrapped up in! We have humans with increased abilities basically being kept under control and subjugated by a ruling upper class. We also have a prince who has enlisted the help of a master thief to steal something from his own father, the king. Our thief jumps at the opportunity and our adventure is under way!
This has a bit of an Ocean’s movie vibe with the heist aspect, as well as lots of common-to-romantasy themes like: instant, mythical connection, found family, misunderstood/tortured hero, feisty but gentle heroine, etc. This is the first book in a new series and does end on a bit of a cliffhanger! I’m very ready for the next one!

I literally could not put this book down! I was obsessed with the unique world and characters right away and loved them more and more throughout the book. LC Whitehouse’s writing was so engaging and there were so many amazing lines that had me squealing with excitement! It was really refreshing to love the MMC and see the strong FMC join a team of unlikely friends. I will definitely reread this book and can’t wait for book 2!

A Taste for Lies by LC Whitehouse is an awesome fantasy romance that pulls you into a whole new world. The story has a slow-burn, forbidden romance, an exciting heist, and a huge twist that will totally shock you. The characters feel so real, you’ll wish you could meet them in real life. Just when you think you know what’s going to happen, everything changes in the best way. If you love adventure, romance, and surprises, this book is definitely one to read!

We meet Alora first, and we learn her history and values. LC Whitehouse does a great way of showing Alora’s character for who she is. Yes she’s a professional thief, but we learn who she really is as a person outside of that. Taran we learn his character at a surface level in the beginning, and we uncover more and more about him the more we read (aka we fall more and more in love with him). There’s so much tension and attraction between our main characters, it will have you yelling at your book/kindle as you read! Also a shout out to the supporting characters, who we love just as much as our main characters. LC Whitehouse does a great job building this beautiful found family and I can’t wait to see how that continues in book 2.
If you love a slow burn, this book is for you!! Not a book full of spice, but when it’s there it’s 🔥 But it’s also not needed, the plot is plotting! Once you’re a few chapters in, you’ll be hooked and not want to put the book down. I like how the plot twists aren’t super obvious about what’s going to happen. I love strong female main characters and a heist (thank you Ally Carter for installing that in a young reader) and this book delivers on both accounts. You can defiantly see where LC Whitehouse was influenced by Beauty and the Beast in creating her characters but they are her own. Alora is a talented thief searching for answers about her past and ends up accepting a difficult mission from the "Beast Prince".
The character development and magic system were unique and fun. I loved Carter (comedic relief) and his friendship with both MCs. This is a duel POV fantasy novel with high stakes. I thought the world building, plot, and spice were all well balanced.
I can't wait to read the rest of the series when it comes out.

Beauty and the Beast vibes + court politics + a fantasy heist + a clever new magic system + an MMC who is SO DOWN BAD it hurts + an FMC who wants to stay away but can't + SECRETS AND LIES. I couldn't ask for a book more up my alley, and, let me tell you, it DELIVERS.
Alora, the thief (FMC), and Taran, the beast prince (MMC), had the most delicious tension from the very first moment they met. There's so much push and pull between them throughout the whole book, and that SLOW BURN 🔥🔥🔥

I’m in love!! This debut novel was absolutely thrilling! This book has rightfully secured a place on my list of favorite Romantasy reads. I feel incredibly grateful to have discovered L.C. Whitehouse and to have received an ARC of this gem.
The pacing is spot on, and the author's writing is truly captivating. I love how the unique magic system seamlessly enhanced the world-building, adding depth to the story. The character development feels natural, making every moment believable and engaging. In a genre where many stories start to blur together, this book is a breath of fresh air!

I absolutely LOVED this book. The plot is absolutely amazing. The characters are diverse, relatable, and absolutely lovable. Lor would be my best friend, and her journey is so inspiring. Her strength, her independence is something many women can identify with. The truth of her past is something you never see coming, but becomes a huge character development that I absolutely adored. Taran is the prince we allllllll dream of. Kind hearted, possessive, powerful and humble. I couldn't have dreamed of a better Beast Prince than what LC has created in Tare. The pull between the two of them is undeniable from their first meeting and it just gets better and better as the story carries on. The banter is everything and had me squealing "ohemgeeeee" multiple times throughout. Even the supporting characters were truly amazing. I will be recommending this book for the rest of my life, I kid you not. It's THAT good.
