My life is split into two realities. Before Code. And after him.

The first time I saw him, he walked into my father’s bank with the strut of a man who knows exactly what he wants. I saw in him a fearlessness that I desperately wanted, needed, craved as much as my next breath.

Because I was watching him, I knew immediately when he pulled out a gun, aimed it at the ceiling, and fired three shots.

And that is the way I mark my life—before that moment and after it. Before, when I tried to be agreeable, tried to be admired, tried to be pretty, tried to make sure everyone liked me. Tried to shake myself of shame. And after, when all of that fell away. When I just didn’t care anymore.

Before Code. And after him.

I didn’t know then what he would be to me. I didn’t know how he would transform the fabric of my existence. I didn’t know he would move me, reshape me, mold me into someone else, someone I wanted to be.

Afterwards, he would become my lover, my savior, my hope, and my strength.

But, before that, he was my hostage-taker.

Uuuuuuuuuuugggggghhhhhh.

I don't know if it's because I just came off a great book-week filled with some awesome reads or what, but I just can't even with this book.

For several reasons.

1 - Grammar: The majority of the time, I can overlook typos, incorrect word usage (there vs. their), and/or poor syntax. But this book was a soup sandwich.

description

2 - Dislikeable "Heroine" (I use this term loosely): This chick was ridiculous. Yes, I get that

That SUCKS.

I just have a hard time believing she would act the way this Wren chick did as a result of that, even prior to being taken hostage.

description

3 - Her name is Wren:

description

Nuff said.

4 - Implausible Circumstances:

I have a tough time believing that Wren and Code's thoughts would be seemingly centered more on banging each other than on a) escaping your kidnapper or b) evading imminent arrest or murder by your former associates.

In short, my tbr list is so full of other worthy items that I can't justify to myself continuing with this one.

Disclaimer: Normally when the MC’s “best friend” has stolen MC’s boyfriend and the MC just sits back and takes it, I will close the book. This is a dealbreaker for me. You are telling me the MC won’t stand up for herself and she doesn’t expect loyalty from those closest to her—she doesn’t value herself, and I can’t connect with that. I’m not going to invest in a doormat, and whether or not there’s character growth basically doesn’t matter to me at that point. This is a level of spinelessness I can’t get behind, and it has always ended in frustration for me, so I don’t bother. That said, I personally requested this book, and I wanted to try to review it, so I kept reading in this instance, hoping this would be the exception. It was not. If you can get through the sample without wanting to kick the heroine in the face, you might be all right, but I hated her immediately.

So, when I read the synopsis of this book, immediately the image of this 90s Charlie Sheen flick that I weirdly loved as a kid came to mind.

description

They're not the same, but the concept reminded me of it, and I was immediately convinced I would love this awesome book.

There was a really great concept here, and with either an editor or a really honest beta reader, I feel this book could have cashed in on its potential much more than it did.

“So what’s your plan then, hot shot? Just gonna let the fucking cameras take your picture?”

“Sometimes you’re so fucking stupid, Code. I don’t even know how the hell you got here.”

See, this guy knows what’s up. This guy has, at the very least, watched enough movies and crime shows to know that when robbing a bank, you don’t strut in there with a bare face, a tank top and a pair of flip flops, and expect not to end up in prison. If you’re smart, and you have tattoos, you do not wear clothing to showcase these distinguishing marks. You don’t just say, “Whatever, I don’t fucking care” like a sulking teenager.

If you’re smart.

I wanted—expected—Code to be at least this smart, since I am not a bankrobber, and even I know this.

Code is not smart.

Now, here’s another thing. I like the word fuck. I do. I use it, I don’t care if it’s in books, I totally get having your male character say fuck sometimes—men do say fuck sometimes. However, 341 times in 203 pages might be a little much.

On sight, the characters "knew" things about each other (without speaking a word) that they could not possibly know. Wren DOES have issues, but the first time he says that in this story, there is no way he would know that. Accidentally omniscient main characters bother me.

Wren. Fucking Wren. I hated her almost immediately. (I should have stopped at "You're the one who's awesome!") She begins the book as the most spineless "heroine" you are ever likely to come across, and then of course the moment she meets Code she turns into a belligerent, fiery, hard-headed idiot. Normally I would give a captive-heroine a roll of the eyes for some of the things Wren does, but since Code is not in the least bit intimidating, I kind of get it. (But there is no consistency to her personality whatsoever, so...there's that.)

I still hate her. A lot.

Also, having sex with some guy, and then several hours later (without showering or anything) banging another guy? Yuck. And Code was bothered by "the smell of her last fuck" when she was just near him, but apparently not too bothered to stick his own appendages in there? GROSS.

Overall, this was not a good fit for me. I thought based on the blurb that I would love it, but I realized pretty immediately that I had been mistaken.

If you think it sounds interesting, read the sample. If you like it, then you'll probably enjoy the book.

This book is sexy, rough, and one hell of a ride – literally.

After reading just the Prologue, I had high hopes for Hostage. Please, please, please don’t let me down…

(**HAPPY DANCING**) I can’t even begin to tell you how pleased I am with this book! Have you ever read a book that you really liked, but when asked what you liked about it you have no clue what to say? Well, that’s me…. right now. I enjoyed it to the point that I can’t even think of one thing to write down. I seriously have no idea what to say. It’s probably because I’m still in shock that the story is different from what’s out there now which makes it TOTALLY refreshing, and I just plain old enjoyed the crap out of it.

A guy and a girl walk into a bank…… one is there to meet for a lunch date and the other is there to make a withdrawal (of the not so legal kind). When things don’t go according to plan, Wren ends up as Code’s hostage. Code is a rough, sexy, tattoo covered badass. The total opposite to Wren’s prim, proper, and well-dressed good girl. The pair end up on the run, hiding out and moving from one motel to the next. Their adventure turns into more than just evading authorities and Code’s “colleague”. Even though she's a hostage, Wren feels freer than she ever has in her life. And, Code starts to realize a woman is good for more than just one night – at least not this one. Wren and Code may be the run, but are they really running away or toward something? Was Wren in the wrong place at the wrong time or was she really right where she needed to be?

I must say the storyline definitely grabbed my attention right from the beginning and didn’t let go until the very end. The characters are wonderful and easy to fall in love with. The interaction and chemistry between Code and Wren is what drives (no pun intended…. ok, maybe just a little – LOL) this story. Code had my heart racing one minute and breaking the next. He may be rough on the outside, but there’s something inherently good lurking just below the surface. At times it breaches his scary and brooding exterior, but he’s quick to hide it away. Wren is intrigued by those small glimpses. She wants to know the Code he keeps hidden. What’s his story? There’s got to be more to him than robbing banks and a life of petty crime. Wren is a fabulous heroine. She looks to be a spoiled helpless rich girl, but she is far from it. She’s sharp-tongued and absolutely feisty. The dialogue and banter between the two is entertaining. They are an unlikely pair, but not as unalike as you might think.

I’m impressed by the writing of this author. With as much as I read, I feel like my taste for writing style is becoming more and more particular and discerning. It’s not enough to just have a great story, I need great writing too. For a debut offering, it’s more than I expected. Either she’s written a lot that’s never seen the light of day, or she’s just a natural born writer. I rather enjoyed the writing style and the depth of it. I especially like the internal dialogue and how descriptive the writing is in general. NS Moore can write one hell of a male POV.

Hostage is a very nice debut.

Tons and tons and TONS of potential here!

The synopsis for Hostage reeled me in hook, line, and sinker. As soon as I read it, I knew that I HAD to read this book! The prologue ROCKED! Check out these lines:

"..after Code is all brilliant, star-fire-bright clarity."

"I saw in him a fearlessness that I desperately wanted, needed, craved as much as my next breath."

I mean, really...SO GOOD, right?!?

Getting further into the story, I loved the first person writing, and the sarcastic and somewhat self-derisive tone of the inner dialogue was so real and so identifiable!

The storyline was intriguing throughout, but I just felt there was a potential here that just wasn't quite fully grasped. I like more communication and relationship-building and emotions in my stories, and while there was a little of this present, there was a lot more in the way of the physical aspect of Wren and Code's relationship. I guess I just wanted more feelings... I like to fall in love right along with my characters!

There were some things I would have changed, but there were also parts of this story that I loved and that made me excited to keep flipping the pages. As I mentioned above, there's SO much potential here!

3.5 Stars for me.

I kind of liked this book. The concept was maybe a little cheesy with the main hero or in this case bad turn good guy Code aka Cody kidnapping the heroine Wren during a botched up bank robbery. The only way out of the mess and chaos for the robbery for Cody is to take a hostage which is Wren who goes to the bank to have lunch with her father who is the president of the bank.

While on the run both Wren and Cody become lovers, friends and partners. There is a calmness to both characters as they both are trying to come to some peace in their lives. Both Cody and Wren have had their own terrible pasts that they are running from only Wren is thrown into running as a prisoner of Code's. Yes there is the Stockholm Syndrome thing going on here but to tell you the truth you cannot help but really fall for Code as he progresses through the book. His character starts out cold with no feeling until something in Wren turns his heart from cold to warmth that is radiated to Wren.

There is a little adventure written in the story along with some funny lines that both Code and Wren use on each other. For the most part not a bad book.

Code is a bad boy who wants out of a bad situation. Wren is a little broken from her past.

They meet during a bank robbery. Action, adventure, suspense, and sexy fulled story. One look changes the outcome of the day. One glance across the room and Wren is choosen to be a hostage by Code. On the run can he keep her from causing problems and getting him caught?

I liked both the characters but would have loved more background and feeling for the characters. Felt as though there should be another past of the story.

I recommend this story as I liked it. Just wish for a little more....

I read this in one sitting. I found it to be a gripping read. It wasn't as dark as I thought it would be.

Code robs a bank and then kidnaps Wren. This is their story. While reading this I was continuously thinking how is this book going to end. The author did a great job at keeping me guessing and yes I agree totally with the ending. Wouldn't want it any other way.

If your looking for a read that's on the dark side then I recommend this. Looking forward to more stories from this author.

Not as dark as I thought it was gonna be... even though it was sweet I loved it! Pretty much new where it was gonna go but it was such a nice relaxing read that I couldn't help myself from loving it. Having enjoyed myself way more than getting all tore up over a book, I looked for other works by this author and couldn't find any as this well may have been the first. This was a fast paced , hang off the edge of your seat STEAMY read. I was held "HOSTAGE" for hours Pun intended. I couldn't put it down and it held me in a strong grip!

What this isn't is a flowers and rainbows romance. It's not a tie me up and spank me romance either. But if I could mix those two scenarios up and shake them like crazy then I'd say you'd come close.

Wren and Code are hiding from life in plain sight. The true is  both are living a lie but not able to figure out how to change things. Wren sleeps around for attention, Code follows the rough crowd to fit in. One bad decision plus a major betrayal and the next thing he knows there is this girl that is meek and mild on the outside and a fiery temptress on the inside and now she is at his mercy..but who is really in charge??

From the moment Code gets alone with  Wren he feels this intense attraction and connection and things escalate in a way that neither one of them ever expected.

These two are searching for one spot in this world where they can be themselves and not feel strange, weird or alone anymore.  At first Wren  used the trick of sex to get her way but ..let's just say things didn't turn out the way she thought they would. Code made Wren feel things she never even thought possible. Code saw through the sexy wall she put up and together they found light in the dark.

There are some twists and turns and some hot sex..to make sizzle and I really enjoyed this unique read.

Is there anything more star-crossed than falling for your captor who takes you hostage and demands you stay with him until he crosses the Mexican border? Possibly—but this is still pretty high up there. And what if to make matters worse it was your dad’s bank he robbed in the first place? Probably not the healthiest start to a successful relationship...

Wren doesn’t know a lot about healthy relationships though. She was violated by her stepfather at the age of 10 and has spent the remainder of her adolescence saying yes because it was simpler than saying no. All she’s ever really wanted is to be normal, to be liked, to feel like she’s living in the light instead of the shadows. But instead of life getting easier, it only gets more complicated when she’s taken as a hostage by Code and her life changes forever.

Code doesn’t really want the money or the diamonds he robbed the bank to get; he just wants freedom. So when the robbery goes tragically wrong, he’s suddenly not only dangerously close to losing all sense of freedom, he’s also got the sudden extra baggage of a feisty hostage to contend with.

The longer Wren and Code spend on the run together, the more they are drawn to each other despite their reservations and the more clearly they’re able to gain perspective on who they have become as individuals. I absolutely adored this love story. Code and Wren were ill-fated from the very beginning but it didn’t stop me from wanting them to somehow find a happily ever after together. The story was told from Code and Wren’s perspective, alternating by chapters, which was perfect in propelling the story forward and in allowing the reader to get to know both characters as the story progressed. Code and Wren’s time together was beyond sexy as Wren, who’d never enjoyed sex because of her earliest experiences, guiltily found out what turned her on. I couldn’t get enough of the magic that happened when the two of them came together. I loved the suspense of wondering if they’d get caught and the vulnerability both characters showed as their feelings for each other grew. All in all, I couldn’t have asked for a sweeter romance or a better storyline. I was supremely impressed that the author didn’t drag out the story with a cliffhanger and in how she ended it.

I couldn’t get enough of HOSTAGE and wouldn’t mind another five just like it. It was everything I’d hoped it would be and more. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys New Adult, bad boys, or light captivity stories. It’s not dark like most abduction stories I read; instead it’s perfectly refreshing and lighthearted.

**Complimentary copy provided by the author/publisher for an honest review.

**The version I read was an Advanced Reader Copy and had errors and some minor detail discrepancies. I anticipate this would be cleaned up prior to release date but felt it worth mentioning just in case. While I did notice these things, it did not in any way take away from the magic of the story for me. If the story sounds appealing to you, I would not let it deter you from snatching it up.

If you’ve ever seen the movie Point Break and thought that bank robbers can actually be kinda hot well then just wait to you meet Code…

But first you meet Wren. Wren is a people pleaser, a push-over, and can’t say no. That is until her nineteenth birthday when an otherwise random day at her dad’s bank changes her entire life.

The robber catches her eye before she even knows he’s robbing the bank. And she’s caught his attention too. Code is there with a job to do but it doesn’t stop him from checking out the prissy but hot girl, the only one that doesn’t drop to her knees when the shots are fired.

When the bank heist goes awry, Wren becomes Code’s captive longer than originally planned. For the first time in Wren’s life, she finds herself fighting back and refusing to cooperate. It drives Code nuts and arouses him at the same time!

“He makes a sound in his throat—like a growl, and this is a totally different kind of growl than the mean one he makes when he’s angry. And he pulls up enough to curl his finger around the bottom of my top and start to pull it up.” —Wren

Aware of the effect she has on him, Wren first decides to seduce her captor to gain the upper-hand, but what her mind devices as an escape plan, her body is on board for other reasons. On a road trip, on the run from good guys and bad, Wren realizes that Code ignites in her something that no boy before him has. And the more Code learns about Wren’s past, the more he admires her strength.

Appearances are deceiving. While on the surface Code and Wren seem like they come from two totally different worlds, in reality they have similar backgrounds and frustrations. Code might be the tattooed criminal, the former prep school boy rebel, the guy good girls like Wren aren’t supposed to get involved with, but there’s something about Code that even as the “bad guy” feels vulnerable. You can’t help but like him whether he’s robbing a bank, holding Wren at gunpoint, or seducing her with his dirty talk and slightly alpha male bedroom ways.

“I like directing her in a tone that lets her know that I mean business, and for some reason, when it has to do with sex, she doesn’t fight me. If anything, I can see it in her eyes that she’s f*cking turned on.” —Code

The alternating point of views of Code and Wren work wonderfully in this story as it keeps the reader in both of their heads, their commentary on the situations at times humorous.

Code is intriguing. Code is demanding. Code exerts confidence and fearlessness. Code is smart and resourceful. Code is your next book boyfriend! (And I didn’t even mention the deep blue eyes, tattoos, and five o’clock shadow.)

Adventure, a touch of suspense, plenty of hot scenes, characters that grow and evolve, and a very sweat HEA—what more could you ask for? No cliffhanger. Stand-alone.

I enjoyed this book but will say straight up that it was much lighter than I expected. I was thinking along the lines of a heroine suffering from Stockholm Syndrome when I read the Synopsis but that is not what you get.

Wren is a prim and proper bank managers daughter who had a shitty upbringing. To compensate for that, she finds she is a “Yes” girl. She gives people what they want and just goes with the flow so she fits in. When she turns up at her dads bank for a lunch date the last thing she expects is to be taken hostage by a gorgeous man that she noticed the minute he step foot in the bank.

Code is a sexy, tattooed badass who finds himself mixed up with the wrong crew. To finally obtain his “freedom” he has one more job to do for them and then he is out. But things don’t always go to plan and he can't believe his luck when the hostage he has taken ends up knowing a secret escape route from the bank.

On the run from the authorities and Code’s old crew, Code and Wren move from place to place trying to stay under the radar. Wren thinks that by seducing Code she will distract him enough to escape, the only thing…….she wasn’t expecting to feel a connection with Code that she has never experienced before. Even though she is his hostage, she has never felt more free in her life. Will they be able to outrun all the bad to have the good with each other or will life catch up to them?

I found this story to be an easy read. It grabbed my attention early on and held it well. I wasn’t a huge fan of Wren, I like stronger heroines, but I loved Code. You can’t go wrong with a sinfully sexy badass type if you ask me. He is definitely what makes the story, with his rough exterior but glimpse of something wonderful and possibly even slightly damaged just under the surface. This is what ultimately drives the story because Wren can see past the badass and wants to expose the man underneath. I found the banter between the two to be entertaining as well but could have been explored a little further.

As far as debut novels go, this is a goodie. I am looking forward to seeing what else N.S. Moore comes up with.

Hostage is a very, very GOOD novel by N.S. Moore. I was sucked in to the story from the very first page and wasn't able to put down the book until it was finished.
This is told in the dual perspectives of Code and Wren. They "meet" when Code robs a bank. Wren is there meeting her father so they can go to lunch when the robbery goes down. Of course Code is a complete jerk when he first takes Wren. I mean he IS a criminal and obviously a bank robber. But there is more to him than that.

There is also more to Wren. She grew up in a life of "privilege," never wanting for anything. However, we learn almost immediately that things aren't as they seen with her as well. Because of a past event, she goes through life pretty much indifferent to everything. She wants everyone to be happy and has a problem saying no. She is just drifting through life.

The longer Wren is held captive by Code, the more layers are peeled back. I enjoyed the subtle transformation and growth of both characters. They both start to open up. There is actually a good and decent guy in Code and there is actually spirit in Wren.

There is instant attraction on both sides from the get go. The sex, o.m.g. is explosive and HOT!!! At first, he just thinks he needs to get her out of his system. She thinks she can use sex to distract Code or to soften him up. They both quickly realize that one time isn't enough.

Hostage is a must read! It is not as dark as I expected it would be due to the synopsis, however this book did not disappoint. It's part dark, part light and happy, and so, so sexy. This is a fresh and original book that satisfies my need for a great story.

4 TWISTED STARS!

I liked this book but this is one twisted love story between two unlikely people. This book has action, suspense, sexy times, and one sexy bad boy who is just trying to break free. This book does have some content that may offend others so be warned. It is raw, real, dirty, and seriously sexy.

This is Code and Wren's story (and can I say that I love their names??!!). Code is about to do something big.. rob a bank. And when it goes wrong, he realizes he has to take a hostage who just happens to be a girl who can't say no. Wren is a girl who can't say no, for reasons, and is about to go a life changing ride with Code. Get ready to see what Code and Wren will do to break away from their past to set up their future.

I actually liked Code and felt for him as twisted as that sounds. I felt like he was trying to be good but was just in a bad circumstance. I thought that while he was twisted, the man was so freaking sexy, sweet and has such a naughty mouth. I didn't care much for Wren until the end. I thought she was too much of a pushover and seriously this chick was whack because she could have escaped quite few times. I liked them together and I liked how Code pushed Wren outside of her boundaries.

I do recommend this book.
I would like a book two. There is NO cliffhanger but the ending still felt too unsettled for me.

Ugh. Have you ever read a book you wanted to love? Like you were forcing yourself to keep reading in hopes it would give you more? That was this book for me.

It by no means was horrible. In fact it was great, and I did love it. However there were some parts I just couldn't handle. The sex scenes were HOT. BUT the conversations, and dirty talking was far to fake for me. That's more so a personal opinion. The book was good, action packed, suspenseful and very well written. To me it just lacked something. Code was a very dark bad boy, I liked him, and even loved him in some parts. His inner dialogue bothered me though. He kept going back and worth about letting her go, which I get if I was in that situation I would contemplate the same thing but It seemed that those thoughts just made it hard to read.

Would I recommended this book? Of course. Just to me, it lacked something.

This book and I had a rough start. I almost dnf this book. There will be spoilers ahead.

I typically don't want to read about either H/h having detailed sex with someone else. Especially when my first impression of the h is her screwing some guy in the back of her car. She doesn't really like him! She spends a few moments worrying she smells like sex. Then she meets the H. Who by the way point blank asks her if she screwed some guy because she smells like sex. No they are not together but this whole scenario is a buzz kill. I pushed along and I will say once I got past that "major" hiccup it was an interesting read. There did end up being a purpose to sex with the guy in the back seat but sometimes less info is better. This situation there was "too much" regarding that overall scene and the recall with Code. These details may not bother other people but I almost dnf the book and this is why. Otherwise I did enjoy the book.

so much potential!!

I'm a new reader to N.S. Moore and she's snagged me as a fan. Overall this book was really good. I liked the way the book was written from dual POVs and also the tone of voice. It was actually a very entertaining story line. Code, by far, is the dominant and best performing character, even though the book is equally split between him and Wren. I think where it could use a little more maturity is around the love scenes. Wren becomes this cheesy porno star with her lines. "I love the way you do me" (queue scratching record and awkward silence). I was worried about wrens love scenes and if this book was going to be a disappointment. But then they got a bit better as the book progressed. She faltered a bit again at the end, but it wasn't enough to take away from the enjoyment of the book. Looking forward to reading more from Moore.

I loved loved loved this book. I liked this storyline of the hostage falling for her kidnapper because Code deep down is not a bad person. His life hasn't been perfect and he made some horrible choices but deep down he wants to be a good person and he wants love. Wren has had an even harder life and she is pretending. Pretending she is happy, pretending she is ok with her perfectly structured life, pretending she doesn't want to break free and get a little wild. Code changes her. He shows her (maybe not in the most conventional way) that she matters and she shows him he can be a better person. They make each other believe. I would love for there to be more from these two. Maybe a novella so we can see where they are down the road! This was a great debut for this author!

Code and Wren meet when he robs her father's bank. Wren is taken hostage and their journey begins. Wren is definitely damaged and has issues. Code is trying to find freedom and going about it in an unusual way. Wren finds herself stuck with Code and winds up letting him know a lot about her. Code finds Wren to be unusual and decides that he doesn't want to let her go. Their tale was unusual and dark in parts. Overall a good read. There were grammatical and typographical errors that didn't take away from the story but were prevalent enough to be noticed.

I really love the front cover and those SHOES- mmmmmmmmm, very nice!

Unfortunately, I can't say the same for the sample. That heroine would seriously annoy the crap out of me! Completely spineless and gutless and spoilt! And the fact that she's nineteen ditz is the clincher for me and I am definitely not going to read this one.

The hero is also a spoilt, hard done by brat and if either of them were my child I'd want to mess them up.

If my offspring ever brought home one of them I'd want to mess all of them up!!!

NOT good! Actually, horrible.

I struggled with this. I found myself skimming over paragraphs, and then pages. Loved the idea of Wren and Code's story, and how they come together, but I think the writing was quite juvenile in places. A very quick read, but not in a good way.
Read to the end, although I had figured out how it was going to wind up, I was still happy with how it ended.

Content/storyline wise I enjoyed this book. It was an interesting premise, but was sorely in need of a good editor. The grammar mistakes were glaring and distracting. I also got rather annoyed with Wren. Code I kind of loved though! If only the whole book was told from his point of view.

A great plot line BUT how it plays out is a bit too far fetched, even for fiction. 3 stars for the potential factor.

It was disjointed at times, but I did think it was a good read overall.
