Fae & Human Relations #3

Shade Spells with Strangers

Rate this book
I don’t think I’ll ever find a light that shines as bright as you.

London, 1814: hopelessly romantic fae Keelan Cricket has grown listless since returning to town. He agrees to help the Council study fae-human magic, eager to erase the memory of his passionate encounter in the country.

But the man he can’t forget is now in London and, even worse, joining the project too.

Silas Rook-Worth hates London. His magic won’t behave and he’s weary of the prejudice he faces against fae-humans like himself. He’s counting down the days until he can return to his hard-working, close-knit family — but he can’t ignore the pull he feels toward Keelan Cricket, the man he slept with, and unkindly dismissed, a month ago.

As the two men gradually reunite, their mutual attraction blossoms into romance. But even a powerful magical connection cannot change Keelan’s duty to his family or Silas’ impending departure — and falling in love on borrowed time will force both of them to decide what truly matters.

Keelan is a babygirl and needs to be protected at all costs!!!
I loved Keelan from the first second, such a sweet blushing angel!

I was very surprised when this book started with a hot encounter behind the stables, a quicky between strangers.
Sadly those two didn’t interact a lot in this book apart from that though and it made me not too invested in this romance. It was at the 30% mark when I asked myself if these two will ever interact at all apart from that first encounter and it took even half of the book for them to finally speak two sentences with each other.
It took even longer after that to make them really interact and it was all just sex. I felt like the romance lacked the actual getting to know each other part and consisted more of lust.
I have nothing against a smutty book, but this wasn’t the epic romance I was expecting from totally obsessing over the first two books in this series.

This focussed a lot more of the project of fae-human magic and Keelans doomed arranged marriage dilemma. I must say I really despised his mother and his uninterested father, I didn’t get how everyone stepped over him and decided for him, against his will. Nobody ever asked what he wanted. I simply didn’t get why the need to marry was so strong and how nobody even considered his opinion at all. I wish Keelan would have stood up for himself for even a second.
Don’t even get me started on the fiancé, never in my life have I met a more horrible character.
I wish Silas would have at least fought for him, even before it seemed possible for them to be together.

I loved meeting the other couples again though and felt the connecting between Emrys, Torquil and Keelan more than the actual couple I was supposed to ship.

I've been pondering about this one for over a week, and I think reading it right after binge-reading all the Murderbot books was a mistake because as much as I knew this was low stakes/cozy fantasy (which is usually my jam) I found it incredibly dull. No Rating for the time being. I might revisit it in the future.

Sarah's and Shannon's books are always among my absolute favorites.💜
At the same time, I've been really conflicted about this one. (I'm so sorry!😭) As someone who's lived through a lot of parental abuse in my life, it hit me pretty hard. Good things first, though.

I love that we see a lot of Torquil & Emrys, and of Wyn & Roger. I can't ever get enough of them! The way that Torquil and Emrys get to enjoy being together in the open warms my heart and makes me grin so hard. I want them to be happy forever.

As always, the romance between Keelan & Silas was sweet, and while I love well-placed angst, I personally felt that this time it overshadowed the romance for me.

It seems that most early readers weren't as thrown by the things I was, so I think a lot of people are going to love this book.💜

[SPOILERS from here]

Thank you to the authors for the early copy! <3

This was an absolute slog to get through. The romance was fine but the couple are barely even on page together until 60%. The rest of the book was about the magic system that the authors have created and are clearly smitten with. Just endless pages of information about that. Crickets lack of a spine when it came to his mother was annoying too. He was 30 something years old but acted like a child who couldn’t speak up for himself at all

3.5⭐

Keelan is a sweetheart, "such a sweet boy" is mentioned several times. Silas has a chip on his shoulder and while I get where he's coming from, he's still being an ass towards individuals that have never wronged him. I do still like these two for each other, though it takes forever, and Silas manages to be an ass several times.

A lot of the book has the same cosy charm as the two earlier ones. They're still studying magic and navigating the high society with plenty of lovely characters. But as it takes forever to Silas to come to his senses, that's not the only thing that takes forever. There's like 40 chaptes too many of watching all these great and not-so-great characters just standing by while one iron fisted lady and another scheming one are trampling through everyone and everything. No one has a whiff of a backbone. After this problem is finally dissolved, there's still Silas being an ass one last time. 😅

This was pretty lovely still, but also frustrating. The earlier books were long, but they flowed a bit better. They were slow and easy, but not dragging. This one was just unnecessarily long with the main conflict.

A grown-up happily-ever-after, complete with spicy scenes 🌶—definitely not a story for every reader. It's an unapologetically inclusive LGBTQ+ romance that embraces the belief that love is love, and love should win. I absolutely loved the freedom of expression in this story—it celebrates that love conquers all!

This is a SLOW BURN romance, though the spark between Silas and Cricket is immediate. The real tension lies in the clash between their worlds. Cricket comes from a privileged background focused on social duties and strategic matchmaking, while Silas is rooted in a hardworking, close-knit, and humble family life.

There were moments I cringed—Cricket’s chosen match just didn’t sit right with me—and Silas? Stubborn as ever. But that made their journey all the more gripping. A perfect summer romance read, especially for those still shaking off the chill of spring. Thank you for the ARC copy!

Did I get this ALC last night then proceed to listen to it in it's entirety today? Yes. Yes I did.

I'm absolutely in love with @sarah.wallace.writer writing and their collab with @s.o.callahan for this series has been amazing.

At first when I saw this book's summary, I was a little worried because it was characters that hadn't played a big role (or any role) and introducing brand new characters was a gamble, but it was a gamble that paid off.

This is such a soft swoony book but I was definitely feelings some frustration for our MCs as they let others choose their futures for them. The scream I scrumpt when this cast of meddlers finally made a move might have scared Oliver 😂

Anyway, if you're looking for cozy historical queer normative romance books, I urge you to check out this series. You have just enough time to read the first two before Shade Spells with Strangers comes out on May 22! Preorder it! Do it!!

4.5 star only because I spent a very large portion of this book really frustrated that these two characters were letting other people make their decisions for them.

First I’d like to thank both the authors for the audiobook ARC :3

This series is a personal fave and kickstarted my goal of getting back into reading this year. But I do have mixed feelings on this book (more positive than negative)

I’ll start with my negatives

Even though this book is the shortest out of the current 3 it felt the longest. This book is a SLOW BURN, which is why my review is a month late , as till chapter 31 (minus the opening few) it was a bit of a slog to get through. It's not that I didn't understand the characters' internal conflict from speaking to one another ( I thought the authors did a brilliant job of really getting into Silas/Keelan's mind). But I did dislike having to wait 30 chapters for the main couple to be together again, especially when the other two books in the series had a much faster pace. What adds to my frustration of the first half is the conflict is predictable. Predictability in this series normally adds to the comfort of it , however when you know its just going to be chapter after chapter of Keelan and Silas not speaking, and Miss Wilton-Reed being frustrating and the arranged marriage plot being very obvious, I simply didn't want to read it. This doesn't make it a bad book, id very much recommend it to those who love a slowburn angst, it is just a negative for me.

In contrast I thought there were moments in the second half that should have been expanded on. For example Silas’ relationship with Wyn,Roger and Torquil was written as more of a montage of events, which is fine! However I thought it would have made Silas’ rejection of his position on the council just as frustrating as his semi-rejection of Keelan.

I think Torquills Tribune was a lot more...meh this time around. While its canonically gone under new management, I still think it should have been utilised more to add to the marriage conflict. It was established many times that Miss Wilton-Reed liked to be a part of the ton/out publicly showing her affections to Keelan. I think the tribune should have commented on them both more to create more outside pressure on Keelan, displaying how trapped he is by societal expectations rather than this random lady and his mum. THIS IS A GOSSIP PAPER why's it so congenial?

Emrys was frustratingly obtuse to Keelan’s struggle for a large portion of the book even though he is his best friend. I understand that emryss’ inclusion could have hindered some of the conflict. But it felt too little too late? Even him separating Keelan/Millicent at Kew gardens didn't feel enough. I would have rathered he’d been completely unaware rather than “oh yeah ill help you” and then not do anything. However my feelings on Emrys are complicated and explained more in the positives.

Miscellaneous thoughts

This series enjoys choosing a side character and then making them the next protagonist. My prediction is Ravenwing, due to the grannies commenting he just needs the right love match to cheer him up, AS WELL as him being adjacent to our old main cast. Regardless of whoever it is, I will be reading.

I may be talking out my arse. But is Miss Wilton-reed's name a reference to Keelan’s last name Cricket? Crickets rest on reeds…she's wilting…Something that should bring comfort (a reed to a cricket, and a marriage to Keelan) is deteriorating (A wilting plant/ a miserable relationship) Additionally she's often commented to be obsessed with florals, which is obvious irony as although she appears beautiful her insides are rotten, AGAIN wilting imagery. Lol i miss english lit class so bad

Something that’s happened continuously in these books during the sex scenes is the top does their thing, the bottom offers to give back , the top rejects and says another time (specifically in scenes about giving the gluck gluck). This isn't a complaint but if this happens again in book 4 ill giggle

I'm nervy for the next book coming out so soon. I think an element of these books I've enjoyed is seeing them improve from the previous books critiques. Like how in this book the conflicts were set up, resolutions were hinted at before coming true

Positives

I ADORE our main protagonists.

Keelan was painfully relatable to me. A hopeless romantic with people pleasing tendencies. His desires clashing with his duties was SO PAINFUL to read, especially when he described his soulless engagement as “what a chain feels like” that HURT me. Most of the book I just wanted to give him a hug.

Silas was my favourite POV out of the two because he really didn't hold back his opinions. I've seen some people say Silas was acting like an arse the entire book but I disagree. He goes through a slow arc of growth. Which I think is an improvement on what the authors tried to do with Wyn. Silas recognises his faults and how he hurt Keelan. He decides to no longer hold back and say what he truly feels, which are some of the best parts of the book. How he speaks to/about Keelan had my heart melting. It was so romantic. Him deciding to leave Keelan at the end is stated to be caused by fear and it felt so real for him to resort back to his old ways and resign himself to pessimism.

I commonly find myself frustrated and bored by passiveness in characters, however their apprehensions towards each other was so coherent I couldn't argue another solution to their issues. I think the authors made such a good balance with the characters, even when they do something SO frustrating you know them so well you understand where they're coming from. Hence why I think my dislike for the slowness of the first half is more preference rather than it being badly written.

Another improvement was the way family was written. Family is central to both characters' narratives. Torquils family was also key yet only shown through small mentions, however they’re much more expanded in this book.

The unit of Silas’s family was just so heartwarming. Especially through the letters and the epilogue. Whereas with Keelan it was the opposite, his family were more separate and I enjoyed both parents. Scenes with Keelan's dad were always a treat and while her stubbornness drives the whole engagement plotline I still liked her character. Her argument with Keelan was a nice look into their relationship, and while she does the right thing she's not redeemed which i quite liked. Speaking of the resolution of conflict I think it was set up much more than the last novel which made the payoff worth it, a great improvement.

Miss Wilton-Reed is such a good antagonist, she's got every quality that's hateable but a part of me respects her as she’s doing what she can to keep her wealth. I just wish her final take down moment was a wee bit more impactful. I wanted to see that lady CRYING <3

Other side characters I love are the two grannies , them gossiping with Silas was always fun. Wyn and Roger are always fun to see again. I'm a greedy man so I always want more. Wyns friendship with Silas was a late addition but a lot of fun, i hope to see more of them as friends.

I think I was annoyed with Emrys's character because I expected him to be a key player rather than a side character-it isn’t his book anymore lol-. When he called himself out for doing fuck all I was satisfied with that as a conclusion to his absence but I can’t deny I wanted him to be more involved.

For what he did do, it was lovely to see him comfort Keelan, both by reassuring he’d be there for him, gifting him a replacement ring to feel special and then encouraging Keelan to fight for his love. Which I thought was a redemption from his past blasé attitude.

But most of all I loved seeing the happy couple. Seeing Emrys and Torquil able to be affectionate publicly was MWAH chefs kiss.

Sorry if my positives arn’t as detailed, I find it more difficult to word things i love so much because i get too excited and feel like the wolf ripping off his shirt

I think the second half REALLY bumped up my score, I remember having to go to the toilets at work to just freak out or type AHHHH on the tube so I don’t look crazy.

While I have to admit this is my least favourite of the 3 (on my first read), the romance was so beautiful, I adored our main couple and I’m excited to see how they may mentor the next couple in the final book of this series.

This series was recommended to me by a friend and I am so glad I started it. Each book has been so good. I have been listening to the audiobooks and the narrator is excellent. This story starts with a one night stand but turns into a slow burn with a lot of payoff in the end. What I love so much about these books is that they have spice but also so much heart. I also think the magic system is unique and interesting. I recommend starting with book one and listening to them in order. They are all amazing. Thank you to the authors for my advanced audiobook copy.

I haven't been this in pain and sad, teary, and angry reading a book as I was reading this.
The angst was angsting HARD! The yearning! The slow burning BURNED MY HEART AND SOUL! I'm still tender, I want to cry. This was so perfect. I never wanted to punch a person as much as I wanted to punch one character in this. I kept screaming in my head! I an in pain, my heart hurts!

This review was originally published on Before We Go Blog

Equal parts heart warming and heart wrenching, Shade Spells with Strangers is one hell of an emotional rollercoaster full of magic, mayhem and meddling. This third instalment in the Fae & Human Relations series is cuter, spicier, angstier, and more deliciously slow-burn than ever before, but most of all, it’s simply everything you never knew you needed from a cozy, queer-normative, Regency-inspired fantasy romance.

Now, Shade Spells with Strangers honestly could not have gone off to a better start for me, as we kick off with the much-anticipated wedding of Torquil and Emrys, our adorable couple from Fire Spells Between Friends. Yet for our two lovely MCs Keelan and Silas, things unfortunately could not have started off worse as their passionate one-night stand ends in a painful dismissal that makes both regret all their impulsive actions. Fast forward one month, when the two unexpectedly reunite during the Council’s Fae-Human magic testing rubric project, Keelan as a fae assistant and Silas as a fae-human testing volunteer; cue all the complicated feelings, mutual pining, intense yearning, and delicious emotional turmoil!

Silas and Keelan just immediately captured my heart with their loveable personalities and compelling backstories, and I absolutely loved going on this tumultuous journey of romance and self-growth with them. The reserved yet kind-hearted craftsman Silas gave me instant Mr. Darcy vibes (if Mr. Darcy was a gay Black man) with his deep dislike of city/society life, while my lovely bisexual himbo of a gentleman Keelan had me grinning like crazy with all his adorably sweet innocence. They have the best grumpy/sunshine dynamic, and I was honestly eating up all their delicious inner turmoil as they found themselves less and less able to resist the magnetic and magical pull towards each other.

At some points I almost felt like the slow-burn was burning a little too slow in Shade Spells with Strangers (which is not something I ever thought I would say), and I wouldn’t have minded a few more scenes of actually seeing them bond instead of all the forced courtship shenanigans that Keelan was forced into by the weight of his familial duties and expectations. However, the character work was so strong that I also totally understood what kept them apart, and ultimately I can’t deny that I was totally on-board for the soul-stirring development of their forbidden and seemingly doomed romance.

Wallace & Callahan are just exceptionally skilled at writing the most believable and authentically diverse characters with the most realistic interpersonal relationships, and that extends way beyond just the main romance. Shade Spells with Strangers provides some of the best (found) family vibes, and I really enjoyed that we got to see so many beloved familiar faces make an appearance, while also giving new characters their time to shine. Especially the dynamic between Silas and his big, tight-knit family with all their entertaining sibling banter, as well as all the heartfelt conversations between Keelan and his wonderful dad (hello lovely French accent) gave this story so much heart, and I loved how how the narrator of the audiobook, Maxwell Forrest, was able to bring this entire diverse cast of characters to life. Also, can’t forget all the delightful excerpts of Torquil’s Tribune and the meddling grandmammas, they are the highlights of this series if you ask me.

Now, while the previous two instalments mostly felt like Regency-inspired romances with an enchanting dash of magic, I personally felt like Shade Spells with Strangers really struck the perfect balance between the romance and the fantasy aspects. I really enjoyed the satisfying continuation of the overarching story arc surrounding the Fae-Human magic testing rubric that was set-up all the way in book 1, especially because the magical compatibility aspect played such a big role in Silas and Keelan’s tenuously developing relationship.

What can I say, Wallace & Callahan just did it again, and I don’t think I will ever tire of these cozy, queer-normative Regency fantasy romance romps. Even though each book in this series can technically be read as a satisfying standalone, I personally think they will have the biggest impact if you read them in order. Also, why would you deprive yourself of the wonderful queer romances that have come before? This series is pure cozy fantasy gold, and I can’t recommend it highly enough if you need to escape into a story that soothes your soul and rekindles some hope and faith in the goodness of humanity.

Thank you to the authors for providing me with an ALC in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own. Shade Spells with Strangers is scheduled for release on May 22, 2025.

Thank you to the authors for my audiobook ARC/ALC and e-ARC! All views are my own.

Shade Spells with Strangers is third in the Fae and Human Relations series, which are fantasy romances in a queernormative Regency-inspired London. While this book could stand on its own, I do recommend reading the books in order for the best experience!

This book was so sweet!!! My heart is full for Keelan and Silas. I adored Keelan in Fire Spells and was extremely excited for him to get his own book. I love all of these characters and their friendships so much! I also love Silas and his family! I definitely cried after a certain chapter with Keelan and his mother. Keelan and his father also have lovely scenes together! There are adorable dogs, as well, and a mention of Miss Peony, Wyndham and Roger’s cat from the previous book.

Keelan is adorkable and Silas is steadfast and tender. Their love is blissful to read about! I laughed and cried and look forward to rereading this at some point. I enjoyed seeing more of familiar characters and getting to know the new ones!

If you’re looking for a gentle, sweet read with gentle and sweet characters falling in love, this is the book for you!

After listening to Matthew Simpson narrate the first two books in the series, it took time for me to adjust to Maxwell Forrest’s voices for the familiar characters. That was due to no fault of his own, though, as he is also an excellent narrator! He captured all the story’s humor and poignancy in turn. I did notice some Americanisms slip in (such as with the word “valet,” pronouncing it the American “vah-LAY” instead of the British “VAH-lett”), but that’s my only critique! It was a lovely audiobook to listen to.

If you haven’t yet read the Fae and Human Relations series, I highly recommend doing so! I look forward to reading the rest of the series—especially when it comes to Sage Ravenwing. I also hope to see more of Peony! I am sure, though, that I will enjoy whatever comes next.

This is the third book in the Fae & Human Relations series. Keelan Cricket has always longed for love and romance. After a passionate night with a stranger, Keelan is heartsick after realizing he may never see his stranger again, and so decides to help out the Council with a new project as a distraction. Silas Rook-Worth is a fae-human who works for his family’s business. When he’s offered the opportunity to help the Council with a new project looking into the magic of fae-humans, Silas decides it’s a great chance to help him forget about the beautiful stranger he spent a night with not long ago. As the two meet again, they find themselves inexplicably drawn to each other.

A very cute romance! I loved Keelan and Silas. They were so different from each other but they melded so well together. Keelan is honestly the sweetest 💚 Curses to anyone who hurts him (I’m looking at you, Melisande)!!!!! I absolutely loved the friendship between Keelan and Emrys. It was so adorable. The way they supported one another and even cuddled 🥹 It was nice to see more of Wyn, Roger, and Torquil as well. Wyn’s attitude gets me every time. “Are you daft?” 😂 And of course, I HATED MISS WILTON-REED. She was SO INFURIATING. I’m so happy she didn’t get what she wanted in the end. “Dreadful woman” indeed.

I did feel like the first half of the book was a bit slow, especially because after their initial meeting, Keelan and Silas don’t really interact with each other until halfway through the book. I understood why this was the case, but I wish that they had spent more time together anyway. I’m also just an impatient person lol so that’s why it felt like it dragged a bit for me.

But overall, I thoroughly enjoyed the third instalment in this series! Keelan and Silas have a special place in my heart, wedged in between Wyn and Roger, and Emrys and Torquil lol! 🩷

I had an ARC of this book from the authors. This is my unbiased review.

This is the third book in a series that I have grown to adore. I want to visit and maybe live in this world. I would love to be friends with Roger, Wyn, Torquil, Emrys (from books 1 and 2) and now Keelan and Silas!

We met Keelan briefly in book 2, since he is Emrys's best friend. Keelan is so tender-hearted and should be protected at all costs. Lucky for him, Silas is a great protector!

The aristocratic fae Keelan and the working class fae-human Silas make a great couple, even though it takes a while for them to get there. At times I was scratching my head, wondering exactly why the obstacles keeping them apart seemed so challenging to Keelan and Silas, because they seemed pretty easy to me. Thankfully between some meddling, advice from friends, and soul-searching, they found their way to their dream life. (Surprise--it's a romance, of course they end up together!)

It was lovely to revisit this world and spend more time with Roger, Wyn, Torquil, Emrys, and others. You definitely want to read the books in order! (No chaotic reading order, please!)

Edit to add: what I have failed to mention in reviews of the first two books is that the co-authoring of these books is seamless. I would never have guessed that this book wasn't written by one person! They write so well together, and it's been a joy to see their writing partnership begin and flourish through their social media posts.

Thank you to the authors for the arc. I look forward to the next book in the series!

thank you to the authors for the arc!

Now, it should be illegal to break AND mend your reader's heart in the last couple of pages! I don't think I can forgive you two that easily for doing so 😒

However, if you're into slow-burn books then definitely pick up this one and brace yourself because boy, is this one hell of a slow-burn that it's almost painful! Though, it is 100% worth it in the end.

I have to admit I wasn't certain what to expect from this book and as I'm terrible with names, I had not a single clue who it was about XD
Throughout the book (nah, who am I kidding. I fell for him from the second he appeared) I became very very font of Keelan especially. Have you ever held a tiny helpless kitten that you just want to protect with your life? Yeah, that's me with Keelan. And did Sir need protection like there was no tomorrow!
I'm not going into detail on anything that happened in the book but let's just say there's a very dark place in my heart solely reserved for 2 of the characters in this book. May they get what they deserve!

After being with these characters since the very start, it's so nice to see all of them return and still continue to evolve. I'm always glad to see Roger, Wyn, Emrys and Torquil and of course I'm always curious who of the side characters will get their story next 👀 (I'm still rooting for you, Sage!)

I'm sad to say goodbye to this universe again. It's always so painful, I'm not sure why I get so attached to them. But I'll without a doubt tune in for book 4 again 💖

The books Wallace and Callahan writes together are worth more than five stars in my opinion. They create a world with such joy and comfort, acceptance and camaraderie. They also depict friendships and love in such genuine ways. All this together with an interesting, queernormative place with a magic I haven’t read about before.

So, this third book is no exception. I went into it with high hopes and found exactly what I was expecting. A warm hug of a book - with some extra sneaky squeezes 😎

It’s lovely, warm, spicy in a soft way and so funny. I recommend reading the whole series, so you get to know all the characters before this book. It makes for a wonderful experience.

Thank you to the authors for the advanced digital copy 💕 my opinions are still my own and I would have bought and read the book anyway (and I will by and reread it)

Keelan Cricket has always been a big romantic; always looking for that big, epic love. Especially since his best friend Emrys Wrenwhistle has found that epic love in Torquil Pimpernel-Smith. Cricket thinks that maybe a distraction with the handsome magical builder Keelan Rook-Worth who is helping build a place for Emrys and Torquil's wedding spell.

Obviously the pair has an immediate (and epic) connection. Tragically it's a one-time thing..until both of man find themselves volunteers of the new fae-human rubric project.

Okay. So I love Keelan. A LOT. I loved him very much in the previous book so I was so excited to see him get his happily ever after. Tragically I found SIlas to be supremely wanting until about 50% of the way through the book. He just didn't treat Keelan very well? I dunno. It felt like their connection was fabricated when they started to spend more time together. It DID feel genuine by the end of the novel, but he was honestly a big dick to everyone in London (except Torquil and Emrys' grandmothers). The way Silas treated Keelan after their first time together was really shitty and I didn't forgive him for it easily.

3.5/5 rounded up

My least favourite of the series so far :(
I still had an overall good time reading this, but I was a lot more annoyed than reading the other two books.
First, for like the first third of the book, the two MCs only really interact once for their past hookup, and then they're in occasionnally in the same room but don't interact. Okay, fine. But that leaves us with less time for the actual relationship to develop so I had expectations for the rest of the story that weren't fully met. They basically only meet up at night, often (not always) for sex, which really limits the relationship development. The authors are skilled at that so it doesn't feel terrible but I felt that before being together they didn't share much. They cared about each other, sure, but for example there's this whole set up about Keelan really enjoying horse-riding and his fiancée not wanting to share that with him, he hopes to meet someone who'll enjoy this with him... then it's never brought up again. It felt like setting up a scene for him to share it with his LI and it never happens.
Also the sheer time spent with Melisande was too much. She was there to bring tension and conflict and getting in the way of the relationship which was fine, but she got to do more things with Keelan than Silas overall so :/
I still had a good time reading overall, but definitely my least favourite of the series so far.

Not sure how to feel about this honestly. The writing and characters were lovely i just hated the main trope, but it’s not that it was done badly i just don’t like it in general. It feels wrong to take away a star just because i don’t like a trope even when the writing was great. But if i was rating purely my enjoyment it would probably be 3.5. But i just love the characters so much.

I found the Fae & Human Relations series earlier this year, and I absolutely fell in love with this queernorm historical romantasy setting, not least because it's much more diverse than most romantasy or historical books I've come across.

Read this review and more on the blog!

Shade Spells with Strangers is about gentle Keelan and calm Silas who, after an explosive (the good way) encounter at a party, both get roped into participating in the first study about fae-human magic and unexpectedly meet again.

Keelan is a hopeless romantic who's feeling a bit left out after his best friend gets happily married and who mourns that he can't seem to find his own whirlwind romance. Silas meanwhile is quite happy with his place in the family business, but a bit unsure due to his half-fae half-human status, and while he is happy to participate in the study, he hates being in the city.

I liked the dynamic of Silas being able to sweep Keelan off his feet and providing him with the steadyness and protection he needs and deserves. That dynamic, however, got very little room to shine as the two spend a large chunk of the book apart.

Then there was the fact that Keelan as very... passive. He is described as gentle and lovely and likable, and while all of that is true, I did find it quite frustrating with how he never spoke up for himself - and he is miserable and letting things happen around him without any objections despite hating it quite a lot. I get that a lot of that is done for the pacing of the romance, but it dragged on for a bit too much. Here I also found the lack of intervention by the other characters, many of who claim to love Keelan, frustrating.

Silas as less frustrating how a character, though with him, too, I had a few small issues. The biggest one was that for all his steadiness, there were some instances where his calm confidence came across as almost... demeaning? I'm not sure that's the right word for it. But particularly during the sex scenes, or the initiation of the sex scenes, I found the way he talks to Keelan and takes charge without asking what Keelan wants, just taking his consent for granted, very off-putting. I also found the couple scenes where he apologizes to Keelan to be very unsatisfactory - if I were Keelan, I would have wanted MUCH more than the quick "I'm sorry btw" than he got!

Similarly to how the exact workings of trans inclusiveness and gender expression was not mentioned at all in Fire Spells Between Friends, this book made no mention at all on Silas's being black or how that affected his standing in society. There were a few instances where I thought he was alluding to racism, but they ended up being nonconsequential and there was no racism in the book. So the history or Britain etc. of this world remains unclear.

The book is not without oppression, though the discrimination again fae-humans is actively being fought against by the study. In a less systematic way, the book focuses on arranged marriages and domestic emotional abuse, where one spouse is in control and expects obedience and following rules, as well as not caring for the other (obviously this is not the dynamic between the main couple). What I thought was interesting here was that in this case, the abusers are women and the victims are men.

There also was a subplot about the magic in the form of the fae-human study, though it felt a bit less important this time around - not because it was less present, but because the protagonists had less of a personal stake in it. I did think it could have been a bit shorter, just like the time the protagonists spend apart.

Overall I did have a great time with this, and I really enjoyed revisting this setting, as well as all the appearances of familiar characterss from the other books. I'm also looking forward to the next sequel!

The audiobook narrator once again did a great job, but I will admit that I reaaaally struggled with all the names of the many side characters. The names are all cute and quaint, but my god, in audio I could not keep track, especially since there were so many.

Melting Honey on a Freshly Baked Pain de Campagne
For those in need of comfort, here is a gentle, cozy, sweet read with characters you'll adore, and a world you'll want to come back to.

**Thank you to the authors for my audiobook ARC/ALC! All views are my own**
I kid you not, I almost cried when I thought I'd missed getting this ARC. That's how excited I was for this new release.

I went into this third installment expecting to be surprised, to fall in love with the characters, and to find comfort. And the authors delivered on every single count. This series has become such a favorite that I'd happily consume anything by them. Please, just keep them coming!

They keep proving their ability to write all kinds of sweetness, and this time, they even delivered some serious angst. I was angry half the time! Whenever a certain character came on page, I was SCREAMING in my head!
Oh, that character... she's insufferable! I developed a deep hatred for her, but even then, the authors didn't make her one-dimensional. They showed her vulnerability, her overcompensation, and her fear of rejection. I still hate her guts, but I understand.

That's a testament to the authors' solid writing. They give life to their characters, making them leap off the page and express themselves in ways that break free from the usual tropes and archetypes.

Keelan for example. Time and time again, I wanted him to flip the table and rebel! I was cheering him on the whole time, and I did expect the typical handling we see in most media. But his realistic portrayal is what makes the story so powerful and enabling. He's the character who reflects the choices we often make in life, the ones we wish we could change. We often love reading about the rebellious characters we wish we could be. That's why Keelan's existence is satisfying in its own way.

Overall, this book is an emotional rollercoaster that left me giddy one moment and utterly heartbroken the next. I was in pain, teary-eyed, and angry – my heart truly ached. The yearning and slow burn melted my heart and soul!

I enjoyed every single bit of it. Seeing our beloved characters from the previous books, witnessing their interactions from different POVs while remaining consistent, was a joy. And the fact that this book kicked off with Emrys and Torquil's wedding was the ultimate treat!

The sweetness of Keelan paired with the soft yet solid nature of Silas. God I just love them 😍
The scheming and matchmaking of the Wrenwhistles ~
Emrys being such a good friend and actually giving some profound advice? Torquil is rubbing off on him in the most delicious way. I highlighted the entirety of chapter 54!
My only regret is not having enough of Silas' family 🥰🥰🥰

I'm already itching to start reading again, but I should probably wait for my copy of the official release to arrive...

I was given an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This book followed the first two books in the series by being lengthy and filled with how fae/human magic works. And I was expecting this. So on that front we were good.

The only thing I wasn't expecting was that the MCs spent most of the book avoiding each other. So much, that when they finally got to be romantic it felt a little bit weird and rushed to me. We didn't even take advantage of the close/ forced proximity. And, yes, we have an explanation for that but it dragged all the way to end of the book. Those two didn't even talk when they were in the same room together for what felt like 60-65% of the book.

If I put that aside them together was real cute. I do wish they'd have spent more time together like the other MCs from the other books did.

I will never regret spending time with the fae and humans of this universe. This one is a little different than books one and two in that the main couple spend a lot of time apart before coming back together. At first I wasn’t sure if I would like that, but Keelan Cricket made everything worthwhile. I love you too, Silas! But Keelan, sweet, perfect, deserves to be protected at all costs Keelan, has my heart. Silas has the burden of being a reserved character when reservation tends to be harder to portray, but the authors do an excellent job of making him lovely as well. Let’s just say, I feel like he deserves Keelan because he knew how to love him correctly.

The whole gang of characters is back as well, and I love that everyone is still as meddling and nosy as ever. Never change!

Please for the love of god, stop with the rubric.

I literally couldn’t care less about the rubric.

I love the characters and the premise of each of the books but if I have to read one more sentence about the godforsaken rubric I will lose it.

Ohh I was conflicted on how to rate this one. I was between 3 and 4 but 4 feels more right!

Keelan and Silas have a one night stand essentially and their magic is so compatible it take both of them by surprise.  Keelan clearly wants more but Silas shuts it down. Keelan lives in London and Silas hates London. Both guys also live in different worlds when it comes to wealth and class. Eventually thanks to human-fae relations and the magic system and the council's work on that Keelan and Silas are about to be in close proximity again and the yearning is about to be ramped up.

Keelan is a bleeding heart personified.  He yearns and he romanticizes and he loves so hard and wants to be loved, he is very sweet and I love him with my whole heart. He deserves all the love, he deserves to be romanced, loved openly and honestly and completely. We've also got Keelan's dad who is very sweet and loving and precious, both of them had me making notes like "gahhhh!! My heart!". Then there's Silas who is more gruff to Keelan's sunshine. He's a bit more closed off and because he doesn't really know how to deal with this pull towards Keelan mixed with him feeling like he doesn't belong and being away from his close knit family he can be a bit of a dick quite frankly. He acknowledges this and works on it though.

We also had the displeasure of dealing with Miss Wilton-Reed who is a condescending abusive horrid woman. The authors done a good job of balancing that feeling of her being insufferable.  I think it gets to the point where I could almost give up because of her but not quite. I almost enjoyed hating her but also absolutely wanted her to fuck off. Just know my notes of her were a variety of "This bitch ass hoe".

In the end Keelan and Silas get that happy ending but it was a journey there! And also there's a lot of the book where they're not together and at times it's kind of frustrating and then there's a bit of a speed run through things. I didn't hate it but there's just a feeling of wanting more, for me anyways. In fairness Keelan gets his happy ending, Silas is going to build them a home! Keelan belongs with Silas and his family. But because of how much Keelan yearned for romance, I wanted just a little more.

Meddling in books can be hit or miss for me. Mostly it ends up being too heavy handed, too wink-wink, nudge-nudge and fucking annoying but other times, like here, it's fun and I loved it. It's subtle and done just right.

I would have loved seeing Silas and Keelan's father meeting and Miss Wilton-Reed get her comeuppance.

As with the previous books I love and appreciate the ongoing growth with characters, the richness of the world and all the characters in the world and not just the main characters. Give me all their books (minus a few!). The way the authors show the importance of friendship too is special and I love it so much. I'm mad at myself for reading it so quickly, I hardly ever read books when they first release but I couldn't stop myself from reading it. The authors are creating such a wonderful world here with romance and friendship and family and complex dynamics and so much opportunity for many stories, I hope there's so much more to come.

Have you ever had one of those series that just gets better and better with every successive book? Because this one knocked it out of the park!

After an explosive encounter at Emerys and Torquil’s wedding, Keelan never thought he would meet his partner again until the day he volunteered to help out with the Council’s new Fae-Human rubric and found him to be another of the participants! Silas regrets treating him badly at the wedding but cannot deny their mutual attraction. And while they continue to grow closer, outside forces like meddling mothers and self-importance heiresses have a bad habit of getting in the way.

While I must preface by saying Torquil is still my favorite character and I loved how much we got to see of his new married life with Emerys and his burgeoning confidence in his new role as a Council member, I absolutely adored Keelan’s soft and romantic nature. Seeing what his friends have, how happy and fulfilled they are they are, he realizes that is all he ever wanted for himself. At his core Keelan is a dreamer. The frustrating part was reading about him letting everyone around him determine his future without him even fighting for it. Poor Keelan’s desire to make everyone around him happier at his own expense was devastating. He had me internally screaming the whole time: “don’t go through with it! You will be miserable!”

In contrast Silas was a practical person who perhaps cared too little about finding his own happiness, content in his work and his family’s affections. It was a joy to watch his feelings grow, his jealousy, and his opening up to others (Particularly Iris Wrenwhistle and Mrs Pimpernell with all their matchmaking; also his growing friendship with the notoriously prickly Wyndham). Equally frustrating was his certainty that Keelan could never be happy with his simple country life.

Side note: have you ever had two characters that you just wanted to knock their heads together so badly?

As for the others I am happy that Adeline finally got her romance (I had honestly thought maybe she would be the focus of book three) even while being surprised when she eloped. It was wonderful to still get Sal’s version of the Tribune and all the gossip! I hadn’t thought about the grandmothers as a likely couple but I also cannot say I would begrudge them any sort of companionship and their interactions with the candidates are hilarious— which helps to balance out the maudlin tone of Keelan’s and Silas’s scenes very well.

Overall I was terrifically pleased with book three and extremely happy to be granted an ARC copy for review. I can’t help but wonder what comes next and be ecstatically happy that Sarah Wallace and SO Callahan have been writing these sequels so quickly for us fans! I cannot recommend the series enough for those who are in the mood for soft and cozy fantasy that will really melt your heart!

I received an ARC of this ebook in exchange for an honest review.

3.5 stars rounded up

Overall, I had a good time with this.
The romance is sweet, Silas and Keelan are absolutely adorable with each other, and the setting/worldbuilding is intriguing and well-established, the magic system enticing.

Unfortunately, at times the writing was a little rough (a lot of "ands") and there were some grammatical issues, largely regarding commas and a few instances of wrong tense usage, as well as instances in which it was unclear which character pronouns were supposed to refer to.

From the marketing, I got the impression that as part of a series focusing on different couples each, Shade Spells With Strangers would be readable without having read the first two books in the series - nowhere in the marketing did I see that not having read the other books would make it significantly harder to follow the actions of this one; it was not advertised as part 3 of a series.
This was particularly prevalent to me regarding the names of all the characters.
With all the recurring characters plus all the volunteers and other frequently appearing characters, there are around 20 last names to register, including multiple long hyphenated names - this made it incredibly difficult for me to follow who was who until around 50% of the book and made for a rather frustrating reading experience at times.
In a similar vein, I felt like the authors assumed readers were already familiar with the magic system - if readers are supposed to be able to read this as a standalone, the magic system should imo be explained as if readers are not yet familiar with it.

I'm certain that for readers who have read the other two books as well the reappearance of characters from the first two books is beautiful and a lot of fun - I believe that if they make up such a big part of a following installment, the advertising and/or blurb should reflect that.

Miscellaneous thoughts:
• I LOVED the focus on friendship and the interactions between Keeland and Torquil in particular, but also between Emrys and Keeland and between Silas and Wyndham (?)
• Probably my biggest disappointment:
• Unfortunately, the emotional conversation did not hit - I did not feel what the scene should have evoked in me
