Just when you think you’re safe …

An isolated women’s shelter ... destined for tragedy.
An enraged husband hell-bent on revenge.

Wren Fern inherited two life-changing gifts the night her grandmother died: a sixth sense forewarning her of impending death and danger and an isolated farmhouse at the foot of Thunder Bridge.
Scarred by a violent past, Wren wastes no time transforming the property into Willow House, a financially struggling women’s shelter for victims fleeing domestic violence. While Wren acts as a lightning rod between the women and their abusive partners, she’s forced to make a choice when a new victim arrives who jeopardizes the security of the remote shelter. But Wren has vowed never to turn anyone away. It doesn’t take long before an unnerving string of events beset the refuge, and as the encounters become more menacing, the evidence is undeniable: a stalker has set their sights on Willow house.
Things unravel when a troubled resident with a devastating secret disappears in the middle of the night, leaving behind a mystery―and an enraged ex-husband hell-bent on revenge. As Willow House shifts into a lockdown, a chain of devastating events threaten Wren’s attempts to save her shelter, and her life.
With a shadowy menace lurking the unsuspecting halls of her beloved Willow, Wren must protect her residents while she figures out who is in danger―and who is the danger, because not everyone entering the shelter is looking for a safe haven.

A thriller with a sprinkle of Paranormal, what else could I want?

I loved everything about this book, the concept, the strength of all the woman and how bad ass Wren is.

The supernatural aspect was so well done, it wasn't overpowering and added such a fun/interesting aspect to this book!

The FMC Wren runs a shelter for survivors of domestic abuse. What’s supposed to be a safe haven for healing gets turned on its head when violent partners start showing up and creeping in the shadows…

L.A. Meredith delivered a heart-racing thriller that didn’t let up from page one. The fear and tension is palpable and will have you running around your house closing all the blinds.

I loved Wren as a main character, not only was she strong, stubborn, and courageous, but she’s also a fellow bibliophile! There were so many little nods to all the book lovers in there, which made for a nice little touch.

Overall, I enjoyed the more realistic depiction of the characters in this story. People process situations and emotions differently, we’re not always making the perfect decisions, and I appreciated that rawness.

After that ending, I’m really hoping that there’s a sequel! I’m nursing a wicked book hangover from this one—I just want to spend more time with these characters and get immersed in this fast-paced, thrilling world.

Thanks to the author for the gifted copy, I loved dm’ing with you throughout the book with my live takes and getting your perspective on the plot & characters’ motivations.

THUNDER BRIDGE by L.A. Meredith 🇨🇦🇨🇦

Dark, moody, atmospheric and fast-paced. Finished this book last night (in 2 sittings) and couldn’t put it down!

We follow FMC Wren, who runs a local Women’s Shelter (Willow) in an isolated location in Ontario. This was her (inherited) childhood home and she is determined to continue her mother’s/grandmother’s legacy of helping those in need. Wren has her own history with domestic violence from a past relationship and this has formed who she is today. This FMC is strong, resilient, stubborn and compassionate.

While supporting the women in her shelter, a chain of events alters the safety of Wren and her residents. The author explored characteristics of abusive partners, the consequences of abuse and the danger associated with breaking contact with abusers. Also, the characters were well explored and showed the strong bonds/friendships formed in difficult situations.

This book kept me on the edge of my seat and quickly turning pages. I would say the genre for this would be a psychological thriller with DV theme.

Trigger warnings/themes: domestic violence, abuse, stalking, PTSD, obsession, mention of knife/gun, miscarriage.

I had been following along as L.A. Meredith finished a WIP and as Thunder Bridge launched and I finally read it and let me tell you .... It is SO GOOD!

It is twisty and pulse-pounding (I was actually a little bit scared for the characters in some places) and action packed! The settings are so well described and built that I could really see them and immerse myself in this story.

THUNDER BRIDGE by L.A. MEREDITH

Wren Fern provides a safe space for women who are victims of domestic violence running a women’s shelter, Willow House, from an isolated farmhouse left to her by her grandmother.

Wren turns no woman away but the arrival of a newcomer jeopardizes Wren, the shelter, and the other women … An enraged ex-husband is out for revenge and Wren must protect her residents, her shelter, and herself.

My little description here is pretty vague because I do not want to give away any spoilers and as I start thinking about it I want to talk about all the things but I loved the setting, the twists & the ending!

I have never read a novel quite like Thunder Bridge before. The setting is beautiful yet spooky. Set outside of town with no neighbors in sight is a women’s shelter at the foot of Thunder Bridge. A bridge that will alert you to any vehicle coming near the property. Good or bad, day or night the rumble of Thunder Bridge sets the residents on edge as they have sought shelter in Willow’s Home to escape domestic violence.

Read if you like books with:
~strong female characters
~character that has a sixth sense
~heart pounding scenes
~twists that you do not see coming

TW: Please be aware of content that may be triggering for some readers.

I’ve been waiting a long time for this wonderful book, and the author was kind enough to send me a free copy! It didn’t take me long to dive in, and I really enjoyed the story.

This indie author’s debut novel was a completely different genre (family saga), so I was curious how this thriller was going to turn out. It was well written and definitely had me on the edge of my seat!

The plot focuses on an isolated shelter for women of domestic violence. Wren runs the shelter, just like her mother and grandmother before her. But there’s a fun little twist in there too…Wren can sense an impending death by the smell of funeral flowers.

There’s an obsessed abuser, a spooky farmhouse, and even a bit of romance. And that ending was perfect. Definitely potential for a second book.

Thank you to Lara Meredith for my gifted copy!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨

From the very first chapter, Thunder Bridge pulled me right in and didn’t let go. Wren Fern makes for such a fascinating main character—strong and compassionate, yet carrying scars from her past. After inheriting both an old farmhouse on Thunder Bridge and an uncanny sixth sense, she pours herself into turning the place into Willow’s Home, a refuge for women escaping abuse. That setup alone had me invested, but once her strange ability starts warning her of dangers before they unfold, the tension really kicks in.

The way Meredith builds that remote, isolated atmosphere—Willow’s Home nestled deep in the woods outside Brighton, Ontario—makes you feel the weight of every creaking floorboard and every breath of cold night air. And Wren feels so real as she tries to keep the balance between offering safety to others and staying safe herself. When a new resident arrives and unsettles the fragile harmony of the shelter, you can sense how close things are to spiralling out of control.

The suspense has a wonderful slow burn—shadows in hallways, whispers outside windows, that constant feeling that someone might be watching. And when a resident vanishes, leaving menace and mystery behind, the story really takes off.

What impressed me most is how Meredith handled the heavy themes—domestic violence, trauma, and the struggle to trust again. They’re dealt with sensitively, never for cheap thrills, and always with a sense of empathy. Wren’s determination to help others while still mending her own wounds adds so much to her story. I actually found myself reflecting on my own writing—my books are murder mysteries too, and while I always tell myself I want to write raw, crime-and-investigation-heavy novels, I somehow end up leaning toward classic whodunits with a lot of soul sneaking in. Meredith achieves something similar here, balancing grit with heart.

Since Thunder Bridge marks Meredith’s first step into mystery-thriller territory, I think she’s laid a really strong foundation here. If I had a small nitpick, it’s that a few moments leaned a little too hard on suspense tropes—but honestly, the characters and the emotional core outweighed that for me.

Thunder Bridge is a powerful mix of supernatural suspense and heartfelt humanity.
A solid 4 stars from me—and since this is Meredith’s first mystery thriller, I’m already excited to see where she takes us next.

Thank you to L.A. Meredith for providing me with a copy of your book to read; all thoughts and opinions are entirely my own.

Wren Fern lives in the house she grew up in with her grandmother and mother, in a rural area in Ontario. She now runs Willow House, a shelter she was inspired to continue because of the legacies of her grandmother and mother. Wren has poured her inheritance, savings, and line of credit into keeping Willow House running. Over the years, it has helped many women, but lately, the shelter has been struggling to survive—and her line of credit is maxed out. She’s been considering applying for provincial funding to keep it afloat.

The home is tucked away in an isolated area outside of town, accessible only by a rickety old bridge known as Thunder Bridge. The creaking and clatter of the bridge serves as a natural warning system when someone is approaching. Wren has had a bad feeling lately—something feels off—but she’s determined to keep helping the women as long as she can. Oddly, there have been cars passing over the bridge at night, despite a dead-end sign just before it. That’s unusual… and unsettling.
The book is a slow burn and I wasn’t sure where the story was headed. Many of the residents at Willow House are introduced early on, which made it a little difficult to connect with them initially. But once the story gained momentum, I was fully invested and eager to see how everything would unfold. While many plotlines are resolved—some with promising outcomes and others less so—I can absolutely see the potential for a sequel.

I really enjoyed this book and would definitely recommend it. It’s different from many thrillers I’ve read: more of a slow build, not overly scary or graphic, though it still addresses traumatic and conflict-filled events with sensitivity.

This is the second book I’ve read by L.A. Meredith, and I truly hope she writes more—I’ll be reading them!

Fast-paced and intense page-turner with deeply moving emotional connection

“Just when you think you’re safe …

An isolated women’s shelter set in the foot of Thunder Bridge in Ontario, named Willow's House, is run by Wren. She inherited it from her mother and grandmother and tried her best to help women who survived domestic, emotional, and physical abuse. Wren is gifted by her grandmother in sensing upcoming death and danger.
Though the shelter is struggling financially, Wren is determined to provide a safe space to everyone in need.
Being a survivor of domestic violence, she understood these women on a much deeper level.
Constantly dealing with angry husbands, boyfriends, and stalkers she always puts the women in the shelter her first priority.
But, now, someone with a twisted mentality is targeting her mercilessly. A resident is missing, and another is mysteriously linked, which resulted in danger to Wren’s life and her shelter.

✨️I loved Wren from the start. Her compassion, strength, and willpower to get justice for these women is commendable. The cruelty, manipulation, and life-threatening violence by people these women trusted are heartbreaking to read, and the author depicts it truthfully.
The writing is gripping from the first page, and it continues in chilling sensation in the isolated setting alongside some very emotional heart touching moments.

The tension and suspense buildup is palpable with shocking twists and revelations. What I loved most was that the emotional connection with the characters didn't break up despite the spine chilling turn of the events. Terrific climax and the book ends in new opportunities and hopefully a new relationship in Wren’s life.
Loved it, highly recommended.

I liked the suspense a lot! It catches you from the start. I appreciated the short chapters and her writing style flows well and is easy to read. Just the way I like it!

It definitely grabs you from the beginning. Wren Fern runs a secluded Women's shelter. There's a rackety clackety bridge that one must cross in order to get to Willow's Home. From the window at night Wren hears a truck go over the bridge and stops. There are no planned visitors. Wren must keep the women safe from intruders and possibly any partners looking for them. Can she keep herself safe too? The suspense was built early from the start. After the truck lingers for some time it leaves. A short time later another car appears with a couple inside and the woman appears to be hurt. Can Wren help her stay safe? With all these happenings the story starts to form. We begin to learn Wren's backstory and the women's stories. Another thing about Wren is she has a "gift" that's been passed down from her Grandmother. When she smells what she calls funeral flowers death is imminent. She smells the flowers that night.

I like that this book was unique. It's a Mystery/Thriller that touches on the heavy subject of Domestic Abuse. With all this add in a wee dash of mystical realism and a wee dash of very subtle romance and you've got a book that keeps you turning those pages quickly. Kudos to my Goodreads and Bookstagram friend and 🇨🇦 author, Lara Meredith (writing as L.A. Meredith) on her second book but first Mystery/Thriller. I think that ending leaves an opening for a second book that I'll certainly be looking forward to.

Thank-you to the author, L.A. Meredith for sending me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Thunder Bridge took me by complete surprise—in the best way possible!
What begins as a tense thriller about an isolated women’s shelter quickly unfolds into something far deeper – a story about resilience, sacrifice, and the haunting reality of domestic violence. I was able to devour this lightning fast page-turner in two sittings.

What Stood Out for me:
A strong female protagonist: Wren Fern is the kind of character who stays with you—scarred by her past but strongly devoted to protecting others. Her sixth sense for danger adds a chilling, almost supernatural layer to the story.

Atmospheric & Unsettling: The remote farmhouse-turned-shelter at Thunder Bridge is a character in itself. The vivid descriptions had me feeling every creak of the floorboards and gust of wind outside.

More Than a Whodunit: This isn’t just about finding the perpetrator—it’s about the why and how of abuse, survival, and the systems meant to protect (or fail) women. These elements added another layer to the story which kept me glued to the book till the end.

The author doesn’t shy away from the brutal realities of domestic violence, and her note underscores the care she took with this subject. Please check trigger warnings—this isn’t an easy read, but it’s an important one.

If you love thrillers with strong and complex female leads, appreciate Canadian settings that feel authentic or a page-turner that balances tension with emotional depth, "Thunder Bridge" is must-read.

I flew through the pages of this fast-paced thriller, intrigued from start to finish. Canadian author @larameredith_writes delivers not only suspense but also an emotionally rich story.

At the heart of the novel is Wren, the fiercely honest and self-reliant owner of Willow House. Her mission to provide refuge for women escaping domestic abuse is both heartbreaking and inspiring. The bonds between the characters are portrayed with emotional honesty and depth, making the characters not just relatable, but unforgettable.

Meredith handles the weighty subject matter with care and sensitivity, setting the story against a moody, atmospheric backdrop. Danger is ever-present, and the looming presence of Thunder Bridge serves as a constant, ominous reminder of the threats these women face. Yet, even in its darkest moments, the novel pulses with a quiet hope.

The story concludes with a brilliant, double-edged ending that is, paradoxically, both hopeful and foreboding. Meredith pulls it off seamlessly. Thunder Bridge has left me craving a sequel.

A great first thriller by a Canadian author. Continuing her family’s legacy of helping the community Wren establishes Willow House as a haven for women leaving family violence.

Wren inherited both the house and her grandmother's sixth sense for predicting harm and death. What she didn't inherit was a boatload of money to keep things afloat. On a shoestring budget, Wren does her best to keep the haven safe for herself and her clients.

Sometimes leaving a violent partner is harder than staying and those relationship ties bind and pull partners back together over and over. Sometimes no matter how far a person flees, they are never really safe.

Thunder Bridge is a tale of danger, fear, and despair but also companionship, compassion, and love.

3.75/5 stars rounded up.

Wren Fern owns a domestic violence shelter, called Willow’s Home. Once belonging to her grandmother, it was very special to her. From the opening moments, the tension is in the air. Someone has come to the shelter, and it is clear they do not have good intentions.

Wren is a strong and stubborn character who will do anything she can to protect the women she is caring for. She was probably my favorite character in the book. I loved that the MC is a book lover. Books can be such a solace in difficult times.

“Life is so much better in a book.”

Highlights |
•domestic violence
•tense moments
•isolated setting
•light paranormal vibes

This was a quick read with short chapters, which is something I love. And I appreciated that the book shines a light on the fact that many women carry scars, both seen and unseen. If you enjoy these types of topics, you should check this book out. The cover is really beautiful!

This book absolutely kept me on my toes! My favorite parts were the women's stories and how they deal with different situations. They were all really well written and felt incredibly realistic. I enjoyed the paranormal aspects to this story as well which I wasn't expecting. Our FMC, Wren, smells funeral flowers when there is incoming danger/ death! Now, that ending!! the last 20% or so of this book had my heart racing. I can definitely see a second book on the horizon and I am so here for it.

A gripping tale of Wren Fern who runs Willow's Home, a shelter for abused women. Wren inherited the home from her Grandmother and a unique sixth sense. Not all who walk the halls have good intentions. A dangerous stalker is lurking and Wren must protect her residents. Lots of twists and turns with local Eastern Ontario references.

This is a very suspenseful story and it starts at the beginning. It’s also a slow burn, but it is creepy. The chapters are short and easy to read. The twist is great and I like how things wrapped up. If there is a sequel, I look forward to reading it.

@larameredith_writes does it again with her latest new release - Thunder Bridge! This story had everything that you are looking for in a thriller - a mysterious setting, dark evenings, police presence, and a great twist! The pictures playing in my head were vivid and I could hear the rumbling of any vehicle that went down the bridge.
I love how Meredith represented her characters and that we got to know each of them on a deeper level. I loved her approach on domestic violence and the main character and community wanting to do all that they could to help. Fern, the main character, has to overcome so much to keep her shelter "alive". I can definitely see a prequel or a sequel being written, or maybe both?

Thunder Bridge is an emotional, eerie, high stakes thriller set around an isolated shelter for women fleeing intimate partner violence.

Wren is trying to prevent the house she inherited from her grandmother from falling into disrepair and keep her doors open to any woman who needs somewhere safe to find refuge. But soon her money woes are the least of her problems as she tries to grapple with someone lurking around outside, a resident going missing, and an angry ex haunting her doorstep!

The book is incredibly atmospheric (I can still hear and feel the rumble of cars over thunder bridge!) Both the remote Canadian setting and the chilling events are PERFECT for spooky season if you are looking for something to read this week.

The subject matter sheds light on the realities of domestic violence yet was written in a way that focuses on the incredible strength and resilience of these women. To me it felt authentic and respectful while not being too heavy.

The writing was captivating and had great pacing for a thriller. By the midway point I was on the edge of my seat and furiously flipping the pages!!

Canadian indie author, Lara Meredith has crafted a truly memorable and impactful read that I’m still thinking about. It was my favourite read of the month.

It’s an enthusiastic 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 from me!
