This installment of Hyperspace Stories takes us to the time of the sequels and Poe Dameron, probably a year or so before the events of The Force Awakens. This is also a time not well explored and it is nice to see what kind of events lead to the break of the Resistance from the New Republic.

Unfortunately in the story we don't really get any of this and the character of Poe doesn't get much further insight either. Instead we get an enjoyable, if forgettable, story of Poe being sent to retrieve a codebreaker that the First Order is using to break into their communications. This gives us some thrilling space battles and a funny hijinks planetside.

While lacking depth, the story is well paced and enjoyable to read. I especially enjoyed the space combat sections, even though these are very difficult to convey in a comic format. The planetside escape with endless quips is fun and fits into Poe's character, though you could still swap him with Han Solo and no one would notice.

The art is good or even excellent at times - especially all the renditions of droids and ships are great - and I like the way the artist conveys the feeling of large spaces.

Recommended - despite the mediocre score, this is a bit better than the average for the Hyperspace series. If you didn't like the sequels, this won't change your mind but if you're an equal opportunity Star Wars enjoyer you won't be disappointed. Reviewed from an advance reader copy provided by the publisher.

Straightforward and sparse story, made the worse by an artist who's never seen a photo of Oscar Isaac and a bizarre need to draw to draw a co-star and insist it's a girl, all artistic evidence bedamned.

I always want to try and enjoy Star Wars comics, even the adventure ranges. I read these monthly. I just never found a reason to really care.
