Lady Wynwood's Spies, Volume 7: Spinster: Christian Regency Romantic Suspense

Rate this book
Pride and Prejudice meets Impossible

Part seven in a Christian Regency suspense series with slow-burn romance and a supernatural twist

Miss Lena Penrose is no ordinary paid companion. Behind her composed exterior, she is one of England’s most trusted spies.

Assigned to the quiet village of Wittenden, Lena, her charge Miss Melinda Neybridge, and two members of Sol Drydale’s team must uncover the identity of a hidden enemy among the local gentry—one who could bring down England’s defenses. However, they have not one suspect—but three.

Lena’s task becomes even more complicated when she’s reunited with Barron Vipond, a man from her past with dangerous secrets of his own. Is his presence mere coincidence, or is Barron entangled in the very conspiracy she’s been sent to stop?

In a village rife with secrets, Lena navigates house parties, unexpected visitors, and the schemes of those intent on sowing discord. Lena’s faith is tested, and she finds her love and loyalty colliding.

As the team closes in on the traitor, they must act quickly—before the Citadel realizes spies have infiltrated their ranks.

PLEASE Like the novels published in Jane Austen’s time, this is a novel in multiple parts, projected to be 12 volumes. Each volume has a completed story arc, but this is NOT a stand-alone novel and the story ends on a cliffhanger.

This is a series titled Lady Wynwood's Spies. Each book leaves you hanging as you wait for the next volume. It has been 2 years since #6 was released, so it took me a few chapters to get in to the story once again, but I really enjoyed once the characters came back to mind. Once again Lady Wynwood and her group of spies attempts to stop the horrible group that supports Napoleon.

Filled with mystery, a side touch of romance, and some new characters, this was another enjoyable read in this series.

Romance - Clean (However not the focal point of the story or series)
Violence - Must
Language - Clea
Series - Book 7 *These DEFINITELY need to be read in order*

I have really enjoyed this series. It's definitely very different from any of the other Regency Spy/Romance series that I've read.

There is quite a long cast of characters, but you aren't introduced to them all at once. It's been built over time through all of the books.

This book takes a break from how intense Book 6 was, so this one almost feels like a stand-alone, but it's not. It definitely is a building block to the overarching story.

I loved Lena and Barron, and I hope they will get their HEA. I also hope for a happy ending with Isabella and Thorne.

I am looking forward to the next book in this series. This is a series I would recommend to anyone who loves Regency Spy/Romance.

You really need to read the first 6 volumes of this series before you get to this one. In case you’re not aware, this is part of an epic-length serial novel, so you really do need to read in order. Also, each volume ends with a cliffhanger. It had been two years since I read volume 6, but thankfully a synopsis of the earlier volumes was helpful in reminding myself of what has happened.

This addition to the series is not as fast-paced and tense as previous books. New characters are introduced in a new area of the countryside. There are a few updates on things that happen in the previous book, but most of that action is left in limbo, as this volume parallels some of the things that happen in #6. There is tension in trying to identify a representative of the bad guys who is posing as an innocent young lady seeking a husband. One of the group of the good spies is challenged in many ways and attacked several times, but overall it’s a much more relaxed story for a bit. As to be expected, the cliffhanger reveals that things are going to get worse again.

If you like strong Victorian characters (both male and female), combined with suspense (and dastardly villains), combined with applying Biblical principles to daily life, I think you’ll really go for this series. Just realize you’re hooked for the long haul :-)

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

This book feels a little like a break in the series; it still is important to the plot, but the focus shifts almost entirely onto new characters, so there is no direct perspective from Phoebe, Lady Wynwood, or Drydale, with very little hint as to what is going on in London. I had hoped that there may be one completed arc, but alas, we've added yet another pair (or two) of unresolved love matches. The country house party was a refreshing change in pace, but I'm looking forward to the plot resuming in the next book!

Gotta say, although this episode was good, it didn’t feel like a lot happened. There was a slow romance with two new characters, but not without two other men showing interest in the female lead.

Lena Penrose had been in hiding for years since her cousin tried to kill her to attain her inheritance before she came of age to receive it. She's actually a spy for the British government working as a paid companion for Melinda Neybridge, the daughter of senior spy in the same organization. They are working with two other spies under Sol Drydale (a major character in all the other books) to discover the woman working with two notorious bad guys from the other books who produce a drug turning men into super powerful fighting machines for Napoleon.

While Lena was on this small-town assignment she came across not one, but two men from her past who knew her under another name. One was Mr. Barron Vipond who had been looking for her since she suddenly disappeared years before, the young man she loved. The other remembered her fondly, but she was concerned he might betray her secret, even though she did her best to assure both she was not that person they remembered. Does this ever throw a monkey wrench into her need to be anonymous!

Meanwhile the other two spies, friends since youth, were Isabella (Lady Aymer) known as Le Petit Prince. With her on this mission is Mr. Thorne Rosmont. They, too, were investigating three women one of whom might be in disguise, but in fact was an infamous spy working for France's cause.

To tell you the truth, the audiobook made this a bit confusing. There were so many women after the men who were newly arrived to their area, I had a hard time remembering who was who. The female British virtual voice used for this audiobook is simply reading, not acting out the voices, so there’s nothing to distinguish between male or female, nor a difference in female voices to let you know which is which. Normally this is a form of narration I get used to as the book progresses, but this took more concentration. Without the written words in front of me the names blended.

This is not a reflection on the book itself, just about the narration used. The book was still interesting, just very different from all the other Lady Wynwood Spies books which were fast-paced and full of hand to hand combat, intrigue and suspense. This was about some sleuthing, yes, but greatly about society, female prowess, gentility, house parties and social dinners. A few exciting moments were when the female lead was attacked by men, two at a time, and there was a near fatal incident.

Not bad, just different. Still quite enjoyable.

Oh, and of course this is full of lessons about God. When one person feels challenged in their faith another has words of wisdom or scripture. Ms Elliot is so good about people of faith in the book encouraging others to consider their circumstances from God's perspective. Love it. These are the kind of books I can really get behind.

Camille Elliot (aka Camy Tang) continues her Lady Wynwood's Spies series in book 7. The focus here is once again on who is developing the medicines that cause extreme strength in those receiving it, but death if they do not continue to receive it. Acting as a companion, Lena Penrose is no ordinary companion; but rather one of the best spies in England. She and her charge along with two other spies are now on the lookout for the identity of a hidden enemy among the locals in the area where Lena's charge lives.

One again, Elliot continues this series as the spies continue to work to shut down the group who are producing this medicine. This is a novel in parts similar to Jane Austen's time, and each part leads the spies closer to the group that is behind this.

I have followed this book from the very beginning. Each one is well written and keeps the reader's attention from start to finish, but be ready for the plot to leave you hanging as this will be a 12 book series. I look forward to reading #8 which has just been recently released.

Lady Wynwood’s Spies: Spinster by Camille Elliot
Lady Wynwood’s Spies Series Volume Seven
This story, like the rest of the series, was incredible. It’s longer than the others but flows beautifully between the characters. This volume touches on some of the topics covered in Volume Six and previews some of the content that will be included in Volume Eight. They always leave me waiting for the next story as they are not stand-alone, and there are often cliffhangers.
Lena Penrose is part of the Ramparts, but most people only know her as Melinda Neybridge’s companion. Mr. Neybridge is her superior at Ramparts. They have come to stay with friends in a small village where a prostitute involved with the Root is said to be hiding and portraying a young woman just coming out. Lena is hiding out from an uncle who wants her dead.
Barron Vipond is another main character. He is also living with many secrets. His sister Tabitha lives with him. They purchased a country home near their dear friend, Raphael Ellswood.
Thorne and Isabella have been sent here as well to search for the woman (prostitute) who is part of the Citadel. They are undercover as siblings. And working with Lena and Mr. Neybridge.
