English Title: After Killing My Way Through The Instance, I Raised The Evil God Within The Rules

For such a ridiculous title, you would not expect the masterpiece that this story was. The premise is that Yin Xiu, the protagonist, lives in a place called Rules Town that exists within the nightmare world parallel to reality, called the 35th plane. People are pulled into this world due to extreme or tragic circumstances and forced to compete in instances to return to reality. Yin Xiu, nicknamed the God of Slaughter, conquered all the instances 5 years ago, but he hasn’t left because he’s looking for his sister. Unfortunately, he also lost his memories, so he has no idea where she is or how he lost her. That’s when an eldritch being, a slimy, tentacled, countless-eyed monster, finds Yin Xiu in the relatively safe Rules Town to drag him into an instance. Then, in human form, this monster named Li Mo proceeds to follow him around and help him get closer to the truth of what happened to him and how he lost his memories.

SPOILERS:
As it turns out, the other monsters in Rules Town slowly erased Yin Xiu’s memories in order to better contain him, and his sister was dead before he even entered the 35th plane. All this time, he had been searching for a sister that never even entered this nightmare place. Also, it turns out that he knew Li Mo long before. When he first entered the 35th plane, he would come to this dark place at the end of every instance where he would spend time talking and interacting with this monster. He never saw the monster, but he came to love it because he was hollow and devastated in this nightmare world without his sister, and the monster was innocent and kind. He could only see this monster in between instances because the monster was trapped in that dark space. Unfortunately, as with most eldritch beings, the creature was slowly distorting him and turning Yin Xiu into a monster, so to protect him, the monster expelled him from the space. Then, by the time the monster escaped and took a human form and the name Li Mo, Yin Xiu’s memories had been erased, and they had to recreate their old bond.

Then, upon revealing all of these truths, they try to find out the overall purpose of this world and the evil god behind it. They travel to four cities that used to have gods residing and find that these cities are in chaos without their gods. The people are greedy and selfish, and it’s another form of hell. They end up finding a key to someone called Lin’s space and find out that Lin created this world and also created the four ‘gods’ that resided over the towns. Li Mo was also one of his creations, but since he saw how twisted the other four ‘gods’ became, he put Li Mo in a different set of circumstances. Instead of having cities of devoted worshippers, he placed him in the dark as a way to come to love humanity, rather than look down on it as his other four creations did. Together, Yin Xiu and Li Mo kill the other four ‘gods’, then they return to Rules Town with all they learned. They give the other inhabitants the way to return to reality if they want it and permit those to stay that prefer this world. Yin Xiu becomes Li Mo’s high priest, permanently tying their lifetimes together, and thereby giving all the monsters a final ending when Yin Xiu dies (their lifetimes are tied to Li Mo, and he will die when Yin Xiu does).

I can’t express how much I adore this story. There were ups and downs, but it was so rich and satisfying. For a story about monsters, it was surprisingly wholesome, and I think it should be a lot more appreciated than it is.
