I am so pleased to be back reading the new book by Helen Cox. I’m a big fan of the authors Yorkshire mysteries, with reading all of her books. A Body by the Lighthouse is a guessing game who has committed a murder.

Private investigator Kitt Hartley and her twin sister Rebecca were preparing to go on holiday to Scotland. But Kitt Hartley is given some very bad news her friend Bryce Griffin had been shot, with his body has been washed up on the rocks by a lighthouse.

With the huge size of the Ship, of about a thousand crew members that work on it, that means this equals to a lot of suspects as the police believe that Bryce must have been shot at then pushed overboard. The question is why did someone want to kill Bryce Griffin and how was a gun smuggled onto the cruise ship? And how did the person who shot Bryce, without anyone hearing a gunshot.?

With all these questions I just had to find out who was responsible for killing Kitt Hartley’s friend Bryce.

Helen Cox, is my queen of Miss Marple, who knows just how to write the perfect mystery to kept me up way past my bedtime, as once I start reading Kitt Hartley Yorkshire mysteries I can’t stop. I have had such fun over the course of a couple of years reading Helen Cox book after book, now I all I need to know is what will Kitt Hartley investigate next?

I have mixed feelings about this latest installment in the series. The book was a fast easy read and wasn't one I needed to think slot about which was exactly what I needed while reading this book, and I appreciated that Kitt's sister had a more prominent role in the story.

However, I felt that the book departed from the essence of the Yorkshire series, as it mostly took place at sea, and the banter between the characters that I initially enjoyed now felt excessive and grating.

I believe I would have enjoyed the book more if it had featured different characters, as it lacked the usual ties to Kitt's passion for literature and the other relationships that the women have back on land.

For me, this book lacked the elements that initially drew me to the series and had a rather thin plot. Cosy mysteries are meant to be just that – cosy. They don't need to be entirely realistic, but they should have some semblance of believability. The story expects us to believe that this "Scooby gang," as described in the book, could uncover crimes that had gone undetected for years and outsmart a major crime ring leader. I'm hopeful that the series will return to its earlier charm, as I do love the characters, but I'm unsure if I can commit to reading more books in the series.

Private investigator Kitt Hartley and her twin sister Rebecca are preparing for a holiday in Scotland when cruise ship entertainer Errol Jackson appears at the door. Errol breaks the news that Bryce Griffin, a former smuggler and an old friend of Kitt's, has been murdered: his body found washed up by a lighthouse, bearing a gunshot wound. Kitt persuades Rebecca to cancel their trip and, together with Kitt's assistant Grace Edwards and best friend Evie Bowes, books onto the next cruise to Norway to help with the ongoing murder investigation.
This is Kitt’s sixth outing & this series just goes from strength to strength. Another well written page-turner. It could be read on its own but I love how characters develop throughout a series & this is no exception. I love Kitt & really like Rebecca. There are twist, turns & surprises & I read this absorbing read in two sittings
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read

I've read some books in this series before and I like them a lot. They're entertaining modern cosy mysteries, and I like all the characters and the ways in which they interact with each other.

Location murder series seem to be a thing at the moment and it feels like anything and everything is published to cash in. There are some bloody marvellous series out there, but this isn't one of them. I thought I might regret this when I picked this up, and I did at page 44. Life is too short and there are too many GOOD books out there that I will never have chance to read so I am quitting this one here and now.

It's supposedly a Yorkshire murder series, except the guy is killed on a ship just outside Tynemouth (a long way from the Yorkshire border) and from what I get, they'll be conducting their investigation on a ship heading to Oslo. Norway.

From what I've read so far, there is zero atmosphere, build up, sense of place (feels kind of important with location-based series) or credible characters. It feels like a cosy-come-chicklit esque girly characters and dialogue style book, which jars with location-murder-mystery. In some cases it may work and could be a loveable fluff summer read, but it just feels wooden and really irritating. Maybe I'm having a bad day?! But when a professional police officer says the murder victim had no family, had a number of letters in his posession from our sleuth girl hero Kitt, and as they were writing letters, she obviously wouldn't have been on the ship, therefore won't be the murderer and wasn't worth talking to AT ALL in a murder investigation, I just feel... what? really? And there's a letter he wrote to her but never sent with a twee poem that's probably going to be library-archaeology clues for her to solve to find out what he was involved in that eventually got him murdered. I just don't care at all who or why killed this performing pirate, or how bloody traumatised Skittles the parrot is from witnessing the murder. And mechanic? Or Mick, Ann and Nick?

Right, this grumpy old lady is off to find something better to read.

This is book 6 in the Kitt Hartley Yorkshire series and can be read as a stand alone. I have not read the entire series. Kitt and her sister Rebecca are getting ready for a vacation when news arrives about the murder of Kitt's friend, Bryce. The sisters and their friends decide to take a cruise on the ship where Bryce was killed and track down his killer. Once aboard there is another murder and one of their own is attacked. A good mystery and some wonderful characters. I received a copy of this ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review.

Borrowed from my friend Denise...again.
So, reading out of order again- starting at #6...as you do. I missed out on some of the context as I haven't read the first five but this one was entertaining. Set partially in the north east, where I live it was amusing to read some of the place names and locations.
It was an okay book, did it break the genre and completely floor me? no, but it doesn't need to.
I'd pick up more of the series if I saw them out in the wild but I'm not going out of my way to track them down.

A fairly ordinary but cosy murder mystery, part of a series but I dont think that mattered. A body washes up after being murdered on a cruise ship, and Kit and Co board ship to solve the mystery. Fairly predictable plot, I would probably try her other books.

2.5 stars, just not good enough to round up to 3.

This is my first Kitt Hartley book and it's set on a cruise ship, not in Yorkshire - perhaps if I'd read the earlier ones, I might have got more out of this one.

Kitt, her twin sister, her best friend and her work assistant are preparing to set off for a holiday in Scotland when they hear that a mysterious body washed up under a lighthouse was actually an old friend of Kitt's, who was murdered while working on a cruise ship. So they decide to ditch the Scottish holiday and set off on the next cruise to Oslo to track down the murderer instead.

I had two issues with this book - the first was that most of the characters were either unlikeable or unbelievable and the second was the investigation - or rather, lack of it. Twins Kitt and Rebecca are in their late 30s, presumably Kitt's friend Evie must be around the same age and Kitt's assistant Grace is described as being 25, yet they spend most of their time acting like a bunch of young teens, so I found it difficult to take anything they did seriously. Kitt's boyfriend also seems a thoroughly unpleasant type, getting jealous because she writes twice a year to a guy who is old enough to be her dad, and being rude to a cruise ship entertainer who is dressed as a pirate - apparently on the basis that detectives don't like pirates. Wondering how a guy who can't tell the difference between a real pirate and a man in fancy dress costume ever got made a Detective Inspector... And I do wish Cox hadn't named the 'pirate' Errol, because every single time I heard his name, I kept thinking of that actor from 1940s films, Errol Flynn!

Also, Kitt's idea of 'investigation' is worryingly lacking for a PI. People are ruled out as potential suspects if they tell her they have an alibi or if they claim not to know the murder victim, e.g. "...the couple made for very unlikely murderers...they both confirmed very quickly that they had never met him." While Kitt does eventually solve the mystery, it's more by luck than judgement or good investigatory skills. There are also a number of irritating 'mysteries' that are pointless.

"A Body By The Lighthouse" is book #6 in the "Kitt Hartley Yorkshire Mysteries" series by Helen Cox.

"Private investigator Kitt Hartley and her twin sister Rebecca are preparing for a holiday in Scotland when cruise ship entertainer Errol Jackson appears at the door.

Aboard the cruise ship Kitt, Grace, Evie and Rebecca encounter burlesque dancers, casino dealers, drag queens and a talking parrot named Skittles - seemingly the only witness to Bryce's death. But what dark secrets are lurking below deck? Can Kitt catch the killer before it's too late?"

My thoughts:
This book takes a slightly different approach than previous ones in the series. Much of the perspective comes from Kitt's twin sister Rebecca - who until now, hadn't really played a large role in the series. In this one, she is front and center with the other three. As the bulk of the story takes place on board the cruise ship, Halloran is mostly heard from in emails or calls.

Trying to sort out who would have wanted Bryce dead is tricky as he did have a rather colorful past and had dabbled in some shady operations. Was that why he was murdered or was there something more current at play - perhaps on the ship itself? Sussing out who the women could trust turned out to be a rather dangerous endeavor. The unmasking of a cold blooded killer and takedown was a real page turner!

Other than a handful of typos where the wrong name of a character was used, I thoroughly enjoyed this book!

Who wouldn’t love to take a trip to Oslo in the most exclusive cruise? It only has a down side, possibly there’s a murder inside, would you take the risk? This is the new adventure of Kitt’s Hardley team, a very brave and direct PI who is surrounded by the most amazing women to help her in her cases.
This story will take Kitt’s team to a more personal case, when a curious pirate knocks on Kitt’s door asking them to solve the case of Bryce Griffin, also a Kitt’s old friend. As you can imagine, Kitt can’t say no, she wants the answers of the murder that seem that the police can’t find.
I have to say that this is a book to disconnect and make all these colourful characters in your house! Told by Kitt’s sister, Rebecca, it’s impossible to not giggle at some of the funny situations the team falls into themselves!
As you can imagine, as soon as they start investigating they meet the most curious characters ever but also they know that their lives are at risk. Is it worth to continue investigating if one of them could be attacked? You’ll have to read it to know all the answers! 😉
I love how the author, Helen Cox, does not always make the same main character in this series, it makes the series more fun to read and never know who we will discover next.
This is a book to disconnect and try to discover the truth before everything is revealed.
Ready for “A Body by the Lighthouse”?

2.5 stars rounded up

This one was okay but it didn’t really hold my interest. We’re introduced to Kitt’s sister Rebecca, and we have her POV throughout the book. Maybe it’s because we’re seeing the usual characters at a distance that I found it a bit lacking.

The plot would have been quite interesting and unusual, but the conclusion was one that has been done before in many crime novels. The change in POV, for me, didn’t work either as we just saw all the weaknesses of the characters and none of their strengths. Kitt is solely focused on the case and though she keeps saying it’s because she wants justice for her friend, it never quite rings true. And God forbid she actually lightens up and has a bit of fun. She is far too serious and single-minded without any kind of redeeming feature.

Grace is even more immature and annoying. Kitt is constantly irritated with her and it makes me wonder why they would be partners, let alone friends.

Evie, to say she is supposed to be Kitt’s best friend, is a minor side character, whose only contribution is throwing around a few, apparently, vintage phrases. Honestly, Evie could have been left out completely and it wouldn’t have changed the story one bit.

A weak addition to the series, sadly, mainly because of the characterisation and lack of character development.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

I give A Body by the Lighthouse Five out of five stars!

Kitt Hartley mysteries is one of my favorite series and I always thoroughly enjoy the story.
This one was no exception even if I missed some of the characters.
It's a complex story set on cruise ship and Kit is apparently channeling her inner Sherlock Holmes but, at the same time, is shaken by the death of a mysterious old friend and reflecting on the impact of her investigation on her view of people.
The mystery is complex, full of twists, and there's a sort of locked room enigma and plenty of secrets.
I liked Rebecca, Kitt's twin, as she's a likeable and grounded person. I was glad to catch with the characters and liked the romantic part.
I had a lot of fun and read this book in one setting.
Highly recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine

A Body by the Lighthouse by Helen Cox is the sixth Kitt Hartley Yorkshire Mystery. I have now read all 6 books in the series and have really enjoyed reading them. This time the book is set aboard a cruise ship with Kitt, Evie , Grace and Kitt's sister Rebecca investigating the murder of one of Kitt's friends.
These books are great to read in the series but I think that they could be equally enjoyable read as a stand alone book. I like how each book is told from a different characters viewpoint.

Very nicely written, I have found these books such enjoyable reads, with good characters, good plotline and fabulous settings. They are quite the page turners and I have really enjoyed this series so far. I am looking forward to reading more in this series in the future.

The latest Kitt Hartley adventure in which Kit and friends are on cruise ship heading for Norway after Kit learns of the suspicious death of an old friend on the ship's previous voyage.

A cosy mystery with enough mystery to keep me reading to the end (despite having identified the murderer by chapter three).

Kitt's library origins and most of her endearing quirks (headgear and tea for example) seem to have been largely set aside for this 6th book in the series, plus the humour of previous books in this series has been toned down in favour of some darker scenes. Nevertheless it is a fun read and fans of Kitt Hartley will love it.

Not for me. This is the first & last of these books I have read. The plot itself was good, but the story, meh. Zero interest in the characters, it felt rushed in places, yet dragged out in others. I can read a 500 page book in a day, if its good, this took me over a week, purely because I was not enjoying it. Cannot DNF a book so had to persist. I will say, I did not expect the killer to be the person it was. Not a great read at all for me.

I really wanted to like this book. It wasn't focused around Yorkshire as you are led to believe by the title but rather on a cruise ship. I gave up halfways through, I don't like giving up on a boo, but I have far too many and much better books to devote my time to. I won't be reading any more from this author.

Another good book by Helen featuring Mitt and her associates this time on an ocean going cruise ship. I preferred the earlier books as the locals restricted the story..

Quite a fun and light hearted crime story. I enjoyed reading about those 4 ladies chasing the bad guys. It was probably a bit difficult getting into the characters since this was the first book in the series for me, but I will look out for the other books.
