This fourth edition Battletome covers the background and rules for the grot forces of the Mortal Realms, the Moonclan grots, the Spiderfangs, and the Gitmobs, as well as their Troggoth allies.

The majority of the background section of the Battletome covers the Moonclan and the returning Gitmobs, who have been revamped from generic goblins into an all-cavalry sub-faction. The Spidrfangs don’t get nearly as much focus, and then mostly only really in the bestiary section, making them seem like a bit of an afterthought. The Troggoths don’t get too much either, but this is understandable as the Gloomspite Gitz are primarily grots, but it is still a shame as they are my favourite part of the faction. The lore itself is pretty standard, with some new information alongside rewritten and expanded from previous publications, even if some of it has been cut down somewhat so that other parts have been expanded (for example, Kragnos has gone from having a page of lore to three paragraphs, while the sections on the different squig units have been expanded a bit).

The artwork and model photography is as good as always, but I still feel that the artwork is better, and I wish they hadn’t started using the model photography more widely throughout the book.

The rules are all standard for this edition, with the book containing the usual Faction Rules, Warscrolls, Spearhead force (focusing on the Gitmobs), Path to Glory Anvil of Apotheosis & skill trees, Armies of Renown and Regiments of Renown. The Faction Rules and Warscrolls have both, as usual, been simplified for this edition. Rules wise, the Gitmob Spearhead force seems pretty average for that style-of-play, but composition wise it is one of the few that I would consider using as it feels like an actual force, rather than a collection of random models as some of the others do. The Anvil of Apotheosis for the Gitz is reasonable with a few more options than the Orruk Warclans one, but more would always be appreciated (the option to put a Gitmob character in a chariot would have been nice). The skill trees, meanwhile, seem pretty standard. The two Armies of Renown are based around the Gitmob and Moonclan named characters, Droggz da Sunchompa and Skragrott th Loonking, giving players the opportunity to theme forces around these character’s personal warbands, which is nice if rather basic as theming goes. The Regiments of Renown, the Shinestealaz and Skulkrik’s Loonladz, are also somewhat basic, mainly just giving players the opportunity to take some Gitmob and Moonclan units, with a few minor extra abilities, in other Destruction forces.
