Lena Fitchett's daughter died from SIDS a year ago. However, she is convinced aliens abducted her baby and was dead when brought back. Her husband CJ thinks his wife is off her rocker with grief. In the meantime people are falling ill to weird seizures making them attack others in a craze. Going further down the rabbit hole, Lena attends a conference about aliens. On her arrival, the woman that was seated next to her morphs into some peculiar creature. After escaping to the conference, government men arrive looking for her. Has Lena stumbled on a deep secret that is being hid by the government, or is she just a maniac?

I love stories that make me question everything as I'm reading them, and PARTUM did just that.

This is a brilliantly written portrayal of a mother who lost her only child...but how? Was it SIDS? Or was it aliens? It's creepy and spine-tingling and reading this novella would be an absolutely delightful way to spend an afternoon.

Ev Knight knows how to write a story...in fact, she won a Bram Stoker for her debut novel, The Fourth Whore this past May. Girl has talent!

A perfect Halloween read!

This is one heck of a creepy tale! I really admire the way things start out moderately messed up and eventually spin completely out of control. This is especially effective since Partum can be read in one or two sittings. Because of the nature of the story this one is better to go into without knowing too much. Forget everything you know about alien encounters and tin foil hats and hurtle through this wild ride all the way to its cataclysmic end. Once again EV Knight has birthed a monstrous creation.

If you have a hankering for a little something that is an exploration of grief that will also leap out at you with some heavy X-Files vibes, this is it! After seeing the beautifully creepy cover of this I knew I had to check it out. The structure and pacing were on point. This book made me realize I need more alien abduction/invasion books in my life!

The narrator, Cassandra Arnold, was a great choice for the audiobook. So many audiobooks with female main characters have narrators who all sound so similar to me. Cassandra’s voice was unlike any other audiobook narrator I’ve heard and I appreciated the uniqueness.

Lena is dealing with the loss of her baby and trying to make sense of it all. Her husband thinks she is losing her mind while she is convinced there is more going on than just SIDS.

Talk about gripping! Knight has put together an amazing story that pulls you in and doesn’t let go. How things unfold is crazy and it gets worse and more mysterious as the story progresses. I’m normally not one to get creeped out by alien stories but this one got me. The owls did it for me. The characters were enjoyable, and the author did a great job of making the reader feel crazy right along with Lena.

A 5 Skull read:

I had the honor of reading Partum early, thanks to the author Ev Knight. I didn’t really know what to expect getting into this short novella, as I’ve never read anything by this author. I’m also not too big on alien horror in general, but something really intrigued me about the synopsis.
I’m so glad I did give it a chance, because it’s such an amazingly creepy and messed up story! Not only is it filled with emotion and grief, but also with lots of gore and spine tingling horror.
What starts out as a pretty mellow, yet really interesting story, escalates into full blown insanity pretty quickly. I highly recommend reading this novella once it releases, and just diving right into it. It’s a fast, yet excellent read.

Thanks to the author for the arc.

This afternoon while putting together a TBR list on my Paperwhite, I stumbled on this novella. Intrigued by the concept, I decided to read a few chapters. And kept reading until I reached the end. 😬

Lena suffered post-partum depression after the birth of her baby, and sadly lost her to SIDS only four months later. But she's convinced that her daughter died because she was abducted, something her husband never believed. He thinks she's losing her grip because she's drowning in grief, so she goes to counselling. She also has a group of friends online who might actually share her alien claims...

O.M.F.G. This novella was an amazing surprise. I was hooked from the very beginning and read it in one sitting. Learning about Lena's heartbreak was interesting enough, before we learn her cop husband is dealing with random crazed attacks that seem to be spreading across the country, and she becomes convinced alien creatures are going to invade the world.

I LOVE stories that are so ambiguous you start to question everything as much as the main character. It was fascinating to watch her spin out of control, get back on track, but then stutter every step of the way because she can't stop questioning herself and everything/everyone else until she doesn't trust anyone. Not even herself.

This is a very well-written story that dug its claws into me and refused to let go until the very last word. And even then, I haven't stop thinking about it.

Excellent!

EV KNIGHT has brought us a fast paced, nerve wracking novella that is a must read for fans of WTH Is Going On stories.

Lena is our protagonist, and from the start, she proves to be the unreliable narrator. Is she crazy? Are there aliens in our midst? And is there a plague turning people into zombies??

This is a wonderfully written book. It's eerie. It's action-packed. It's mysterious. Definitely a tale to be read in one sitting. I would definitely recommend this to readers who enjoy a mystery with lots of twists and turns!

Spooky

I wasn't sure what to expect from this short book. We are quickly dropped into the world of conspiracy theorists. What is real and what isn't becomes impossible to discern. The author surrounds us with an atmosphere of menace and danger and insanity. Starts as slowly as a carousel but ends with the frenetic energy of a roller coaster. A wild ride not to be missed. Kinda freaked me out.

This is a quick, but entrancing read. The subject is personal and the psychological intensity and relationships are well thought through. Sadly, the foul language in such a short work is overwhelming and distracting. It did nothing to add to the story and took away from a well-written work. I would like to recommend it, but I can't. The good does not outweigh the bad. A cautionary tale for other writers. Use your vocabulary for good and your story will be much more effective.
