I have followed Ember’s story across the whole Trimarked series and Tattered continues the series in a very entertaining way that kept me turning the pages. The concept of the books is intriguing, with the town cut off from the rest of the world and divided between humans, fae and witches, with each guarding their territory jealously and the unfortunate halfers and the trimarked child, Ember, treated with fear and suspicion by all.
The book is very well written, and told from several viewpoints, with chapters marked for each character, so it is easy to follow. Alongside the heroine, Ember, the witch Devi was one of my favourite characters, and the passage “Her cheeks burned with the onslaught of fresh heartache, her skin already raw and dry from the stain of salt and sorrow” is so beautiful that I stopped and read it over. The book is expressive throughout, full of raw emotion as the story builds, creating an image of Trifecta that has stayed with me as I’ve read through the series.
One of the attractions of the books for me has been following the story as it moved between the different communities in Trifecta and seeing the interactions between fae, humans and witches, along with the struggles of the halfers, who do not fit neatly into any of these three groups. The worldbuilding is good and I could happily read more stories set in this space.
I received an ARC of Tattered by C. K. Sorens in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Tattered is book three of the continuing series, Trimarked. Sorens has created a complex tale of witches, fae, and humans trapped together in fraying harmony, with poor Ember as an unwilling pawn between them. Each faction strives to control the power she wields, yet all want the same thing: escape. No book four yet, but I hope there’ll be one soon so I can find out what happens next!
I feel for Ember. Never really knowing who truly supports you and who only want to use you. I hope the next book explains what happened to everyone. I loved reading this book! It was so original and exciting. I definitely recommend it!
Absolutely fantastic, there’s no stopping until you finished the story. Ember’s story will keep you intrigued, wishing it would never end. Don’t miss out once it’s released.
The Trimarked series is about a young woman who learns how to harness and control her magical powers in a world where there is a natural order for humans, witches, and fae. In this book, she learns about trust, betrayal, and the origins of her Trimark tattoo.
USA Today's Best selling author C.K. Sorens does a beautiful job at pulling you into fast paced, action scenes. This book also hooked me in deep with beautiful lines and descriptions like this:
Her eyes lingered on the impossible tree he left behind, its thick, unnatural form stretching skyward like a scar against the pale morning light.
The quality and voice of her writing are not the only thing that makes this book fun. There are so many unique aspects to the story and this series. Gypsum and red woods. Magical tattoo and veil system. Even the characters have their own profanity words.
I feel like I should start this review by commenting on the absolutely brutal ending because HOLY PLOT TWIST, BATMAN! Luckily, the author has already confirmed many more books to come to fix this conundrum. At this point, we all need answers. Tattered begins with all characters still reeling after the events that took place in Afflicted (Book II). Tensions are crazy high and it's palpable when, after all they've been through together, no one can trust no one anyway. Especially Ember. That poor girl can't get a break, and I'm starting to agree with the scenario of her exploding and taking the entire town with her. I'm a sensible adult, so I won't be pressing the author to hurry up and write Book IV, but... I'll be waiting. MUAHAHAHAHA!
