Katherine Mason's life had never been easy. As a single mother living in the basement of her brother's rowhome, the last thing she needs on a Friday night is for her ex to show up, unannounced, asking for a favor. After she begrudgingly agrees, she meets Joaquin Morales, a businessman with piercing eyes and a disarming smile. When her ex is found dead, she seeks out answers from the mysterious billionaire while he angles to use her daughter in his research into human blood. To find a cure.

Once Katherine learns the truth about the kind of man Joaquin is, she is forced to pick a side in a war she does not understand. Will she help him against the monsters that rule Philadelphia or simply walk away? It is a decision that will impact her family's legacy, the city's future, and rewrite history itself.

This was a really good debut novel, and the writing was descriptive. I don’t want to give too much away, but I would describe this book as a blend of a few genres including suspense and a small romantic subplot. The book took a turn I was definitely not expecting, but it was not completely out of place with a little bit of foreshadowing. The FMC is written as naive and perhaps immature, but that was necessary for the advancement of the plot. The portrayal of being a single mom who hasn’t quite gotten her life figured out was realistic and relatable, and I enjoyed Katherine’s character growth throughout the story. The end of the story is action-packed. The culmination of events leads to a heart-pounding moment, and I couldn’t wait to see how the story unfolds. This was an entertaining read and I would recommend it.

“Words have power. What we say to each other, what we say about ourselves has power. Words cover us, like paint, our souls a canvas for our internal monologue. Other voices add on to it too. Some words, evil words, repeat in our heads, make us go crazy. You can’t change what other people have said. But you can change how you view yourself.”

Amazing! Most likely the best book I’ve read in a year. I could barely put the book down! The twists the turns (I won’t give anything away except to say you’re going to surprised by a big twist) kept me guessing and most of the time I was wrong with my predictions. That’s the true sign of a great book! I had so much fun reading and putting myself in the shoes of every character trying to figure out how a happy ending was going to happen. I hope there will be a 2nd book because I need more.
