O ile koncept wydawał się ciekawy to wykonanie już było słabe.
Po pierwsze : stereotypowe postacie

Każda z tych postaci nie miała nic do zaoferowania poza owymi łatkami którymi byli, puści , kartonowi i bez głębi
Nic nie było wiarygodne a wręcz absurdalne i chciałabym móc za to wszystko obwinić gatunek ale jest masa dobrych thrillerów młodzieżowych który nie opierają się na stereotypach i są realistyczne xd

I feel like just the mention of 7 teens without wifi would be enough to summon up horrors in my own YA’s
In the opening of Circle of Liars I was really invested, there are loads of comparisons I could make, and my brain was firing off in loads of different direction’s, but in conclusion I’ve decided not to liken to anything because in its own right while it bares some similarities it’s entirely its own story, its layered, smart and genuinely terrifying at times.
Something terrible happened a year ago, now a group of 7 have won a school prize of a breakaway. Immediately they arrive at their destination it’s clear something is very wrong, they’ve unwittingly entered a horrific game, each of them holds a secret about the school fire, and the puppet master of the game will kill them one by one until the truth comes out. Loads of twists, turns and surprises throughout.
For me, personally the cast of characters felt a bit like a box ticking exercise, but I do need to remind myself what while I enjoy YA it’s not a genre directed at me, and the books target audience will probably appreciate the representation. I’d probably pitch this towards the slightly older teen age bracket. It also felt very slightly too long.
There’s a pretty full cast of narrators, and while the majority of the characters were portrayed really well, there were some accent issues and sometimes a bit of a crossover with characters.

Na wstępie muszę przyznać, że spodziewałam się czegoś zupełnie innego, niż ostatecznie otrzymałam. Często sięgam po thrillery, bo mają w sobie coś magnetycznego, potrafią mnie całkowicie pochłonąć. Niestety w tym przypadku trochę tego zabrakło, a całość okazała się nieco schematyczna i przewidywalna. Mimo wszystko bawiłam się wystarczająco dobrze, by wystawić umiarkowanie pozytywną opinię.
Historia opowiada o siedmiu nastolatkach, którzy trafiają do tajemniczego hotelu Loba pod pretekstem wygranego, trzydniowego wyjazdu. Nikt jednak nie spodziewa się, że to pułapka i to śmiertelna. Brak kontaktu ze światem, brak jedzenia, odcięcie od internetu oraz narastający strach towarzyszy im od pierwszych chwil. Wkrótce zaczynają się domyślać, że to nie ponury żart, lecz brutalna rzeczywistość. Co godzinę muszą wskazać osobę, którą uważają za najbardziej winną pożaru sprzed roku tragedii, do której doszło w ich szkole. Wybrany ma opuścić krąg, co oznacza natychmiastową śmierć. Atmosfera z minuty na minutę staje się coraz bardziej napięta. Kto stoi za tym makabrycznym planem? Kto pragnie zemsty za dawne krzywdy? Jeśli chcecie się dowiedzieć, sięgnijcie po tę wciągającą powieść autorstwa Kate Francis - tym razem serwuje nam coś zupełnie innego niż zazwyczaj.
Książka utrzymana jest w gęstym, dusznym klimacie. Emocje odczuwają nie tylko bohaterowie, lecz również czytelnicy zwłaszcza w momentach, gdy odkrywają, kto będzie następną ofiarą. Pomysł okazał się naprawdę interesujący i nieszablonowy, co sprawiło, że przez sporą część lektury czerpałam z czytania dużą przyjemność. Niestety z czasem zaczęły wychodzić na jaw niedociągnięcia, które początkowo trudno było dostrzec.
Fabuła szczególnie w zakończeniu była przewidywalna. Tam, gdzie powinno pojawić się zaskoczenie i pytanie „jak to możliwe?”, ja już od dłuższego czasu podejrzewałam, jak to wszystko się zakończy. W efekcie końcówka nie wywołała większych emocji i pozbawiła mnie części przyjemności z czytania.

Powieść liczy około 350 stron, co wydaje się idealną objętością, ale zabrakło mi balansu w prowadzeniu wydarzeń. Gdyby autorka lepiej rozplanowała dynamikę, być może nie odjęłabym jednej gwiazdki w końcowej ocenie.

I was really intrigued when I first heard about Circle of Liars. While I am not a big fan of Thrillers, I’ve always quite enjoyed how fun YA Thrillers and Mysteries are. So when I won the ARC of Circle of Liars at last years YALC, I was super excited to see what this one was like. I’ve not read anything by this author before so I was excited to see if she brought something a bit different to the genre. After finishing the book, I’m definitely in two minds about this one. I loved the beginning but ended up feeling a little bit disappointed in the resolution of everything.
Circle of Liars follows seven teenagers who are hiding secrets regarding what really happened in the deadly fire that happened at their school last year. Lured to an abandoned old motel under the guise of being a rewarding trip from the school, the teenagers are faced with a ‘game’. Choose the most guilty among them to die… and the last one standing gets to survive. As the stakes get higher and higher, secrets start to be told.
I really enjoyed the set up of Circle of Liars. I was really intrigued as to what role each of these teenagers played in the fire and I honestly flew through the first half of this book. It was gripping and addictive and I was on the edge of my seat desperate to find out who had set all of this up. I honestly had forgotten how much I do enjoy a thriller and it’s definitely made me realise I need to read more of them in the future, as I do find them really gripping and entertaining.
My first issue with the book was some of the language that was used. I felt like some of the phrases the characters said would just not be in the vocabulary of an American teen. The first example of this was in the first two chapters. When the students arrive at the motel there seems to be something blocking the signal and so they cannot use their phones. When they discover this the teens repeat multiple times ‘I have no cell’. Maybe this is a miscommunication thing with me not being American but I was confused by this as a cell is the phone itself isn’t it? I feel like they’d be more likely to say cell reception or cell signal? I don’t know but it completely drew me out of the book. The second instance of this was later in the book when the students make ‘cheese toasties’. I just don’t think US teenagers would call them this as this is a very British term. It just made me question the likelihood of some of the language being used.
My second issue… and the main one really was the resolution of the mystery. I don���t know if the author’s intention was for the main mystery to be the teenager’s secrets but when we found out who set up the whole ‘circle’ and game… I didn’t have a clue who they were. I was like… who? I was so disappointed by this as I really wanted to be able to figure out who had done it all just to be faced with someone I didn’t even remember. I did guess a lot of the teenager’s secrets so that was something I guess but I just ended up really disappointed. When I read a thriller I want to be shocked by the resolution… and this one was just a let down. I felt like the book has such a strong start for it to just fizzle out in the middle. I ended up towards the end skim reading a lot as I was just ready for it to be over. Maybe I’ve just read too many YA Thrillers now and I’m over them a little… I don’t know.
Circle of Liars had so much potential, but for me it just didn’t quite live up to my expectations in the resolution of it all. If you’re new to the genre I’d still definitely recommend it as the build up of the whole thing was fantastic. It was just a bit of a let down for me personally. Perhaps at my ripe old age of 34, I’m just a bit too old to enjoy YA Thrillers and need to move on to adult ones instead.

YA thrillers proving again and again why they are one of my favourite genres! Seven teenagers arrive at a remote motel in the Californian desert for a school residential. At first, the dilapidated motel looks like nothing more than a prank, but soon, it spirals into something far more sinister. The seven all have something in common - they’re all guilty. Exactly a year ago, the school gym burnt down and killed two people. Each of the seven had a hand in it, and by the looks of it, someone else knows it too. Someone who is watching their every move…
By the turn of every hour, one of the seven must be expelled from the motel, where they are shot dead. It’s very Lord of the Flies-esque in the way it pits the teenagers against one another and explores dynamics within the group. I found the character of Ellis so interesting, the way his role as the leader of the group and his struggle for dominance was portrayed. Ana was a great narrator and experiencing the story predominantly through her lens was a fantastic choice. I would’ve liked some of the other characters to be explored more fully - Jax, Jade, and Caden.
This book is so thought-provoking with its central questions - of course, you can’t help but compare the actions of the characters with what you would have done in their situation. Whether you’d be ruthless enough to survive, or whether you’d be picked off early. The ending will probably hit differently for every reader, depending on what you like, but for me personally, I really liked it. It did make me view the entire book in a different light. I was, however, underwhelmed by some of the plot twist, including who the real villain was.
Overall though, a twisty, fast-paced young adult thriller with a killer premise! I’d recommend for fans of Karen M. McManus and We Were Liars.

A good suspensefull YA thriller. Lots of plottwists that i actually did not see coming. Loved how the ending turned out BUT i do feel like there’s a huge plothole?? Wish there was more information about the true ending but still. Really good book loved it!

Oczekiwałam czegoś innego. Po opisie spodziewałam się czegoś bardziej w stylu, że siedzą i rozmawiają, a to jak potoczy się rozmowa będzie definiowało jak skończy się książka, ale niestety. Jeśli już miał to być taki typowy thriller z wartką akcją to trochę nie wyszło, bo w sumie to mało się działo oprócz tego odliczania co godzinę. Wiadomo, że trauma łączy, więc ludzie w trudnej sytuacji zaczynają współpracować i nawiązywać relacje a w tym przypadku trochę mi tego zabrakło. Jedyne relacje jakie tu powstały to romantyczne...
No muszę przyznać, że nie porwało mnie to. Nawet na końcówce, powtarzam KOŃCÓWCE zasnęłam, bo odliczałam strony do końca. Zakończenie też przekombinowane. Ani mnie nie zdziwiło ani nie rozczarowało, poprostu mam obojętny stosunek. Rozumiem dlaczego komuś może się spodobać i szanuję, ale to raczej nie thriller w moim stylu. Francis had me gasping for Ellis confession with a O and they’re times I wanted him killed because he was that character I couldn’t stand at all like he truly annoyed me SO much and everything but I really enjoyed this book and the way Kate made the characters there’s so many twists and turns and makes you think about who to trust this is definitely one of us is lying meets we were liars but I felt the one of us is lying vibes more especially toward the end when the confessions rolled out my favourite characters were Ana and Alex they’re the sweetest and how they survived together was so lovely to see I can’t wait to read what Francis writes next

W rocznicę tragedii siedmioro uczniów z jednego liceum trafia do tajemniczego motelu, po tym jak wszyscy wygrali szkolną loterię. Jednak zamiast obiecanej zabawy czeka na nich opuszczony budynek i wszechobecne kamery śledzące każdy ich ruch. Co tak naprawdę dzieje się w hotelu Loba i dlaczego to właśnie oni zostali zaproszeni?
Pozytywnie zaskoczył mnie początek tej historii. Akcja od razu trzyma w napięciu, a atmosfera tajemnicy wciąga tak, że trudno się oderwać. Chciałam jak najszybciej odkryć, w co gra antagonista, kto stoi za całą psychologiczną rozgrywką i jakie sekrety kryją bohaterowie.
Pomimo tego, że akcja rozgrywa się w nieco ponad dobę, jest pełna wydarzeń. Zabrakło mi jednak balansu w jej tempie. Były momenty, w których wydarzenia pędziły naprzód i trzymały w napięciu, ale zaraz potem następowały fragmenty zdecydowanie zbyt spokojne, które wybijały z rytmu. Z czasem fabuła stała się też przewidywalna, tracąc początkowy element zaskoczenia.

Our group of 7 high school students win a raffle to go on a school trip - but expectation doesn't quite match reality. You're left wondering who orchestrated all of this - who has access to all of their secrets to know what they're hiding. What are they even hiding and are the secrets worth dying for? What happened one year ago to lead someone to put them through all this? Can they even trust each other or is someone in their circle of 7 messing with them; after all - they're all liars in some way or another.
This was gripping. The change in character POV's allows you to experience what each individual is going through, their thoughts about the past and how they're coping (or not coping) with the present. Some of them have guilt about what happened a year ago and I liked that the author gave us deeper insight into these events with flashbacks to the past and in some cases it unravels what they're "guilty" of.
What are their secrets? And are they worth dying for? And even if they are.. who gives someone the right to cast judgement on them?
This is a page turner. If you enjoy Karen M McManus or Jennifer Lynn Barnes then you have to pick this one up.

Sama nie wiem co o niej sądzić ani jaką dać końcową ocenę tej książki.. Pierwsze 50 stron było idealne, byłam bardzo zaangażowana w akcję, fabuła rozwijała się w dobrym tempie i wszystko zapowiadało się świetnie. Im dalej w las tym.. dziwniej? Sama nie wiem.
Później, podczas czytania pierwszej połowy nie potrafiłam się wkręcić. Bardzo się nudziłam i odliczałam strony do skończenia tej książki. Było wiele rzeczy, które nie wnosiły nic do fabuły a tylko wydłużały całą historię.
W skrócie: pierwsze i ostatnie +/- 70 stron: świetne
wszystko co pomiędzy: w większości nie potrafiłam się wkręcić w akcję i się nudziłam

Great summer mystery, though the ending felt as if the writer was pulling back from a bleak and terrifying story to offer hope to readers that life can offer you second chances.
A group of seven students are looking forward to the retreat they’ve won…until they arrive at a grotty motel in the middle of nowhere with no WiFi service and no other guests. When the bus they travelled in blows up not long after their arrival they start to panic about what this could mean. When a letter is opened the contents make it very clear that someone is toying with them and this retreat is not quite what they expected.
The situation revolves around a fire at their school a year ago in which two students died. We soon learn that each of the group feels some sense of responsibility for what happened, and the aim of this nightmare scenario is to force them to admit their guilt until only one remains.
Though the final section of the book put things in quite a different light, I can’t help but feel the whole thing became a little repetitive and the lack of detail given to some characters meant we didn’t really understand their dynamics until too late.

This book had me gripped right from the start and even though I worked out some of the twists early on, I absolutely loved every second of the journey we took with this group.
One year on from a fatal fire at the school, seven of the students win a trip on an exclusive school retreat.
When they arrive at an abandoned motel, they're convinced it's some sort of prank - that is until they all receive a text telling them that someone knows the truth about the fire and their lies!
This was jam-packed with tension from start to finish and I actually could not put this down.
The group must send someone outside the safety circle every hour and they need to work out a way to decide who should cross.
When the first one over is shot dead, things turn feral and the group starts to turn on each other.
It was great to see the diverse characters and see just how each of them dealt with the situation.
Hearing each story, the events of the previous year unfold gradually and we soon see the parts that each played in the run up to the fire.
Some more damning than others, but all with their own consequences.
This had me on edge throughout and I'm not even sure I blinked for the last quarter!
The tension built and built and I could only imagine how each of the students must have felt as they came to terms with not only their own actions, but also the loss of their fellow students.
The writing style was brilliant and I was so completely immersed.
There are definite lessons to be learned from this read but it does make you think about how you'd react in this situation and whether you'd be ruthless enough to sacrifice or save yourself.
This was super fast-paced and I raced through it in just a couple of sittings, staying up late into the night to get the answers I needed.
A great read and I can't wait to see more from this author in the future.

I was so, so looking forward to this book—you have no idea! I love thrillers and having an early copy of this read that seemed my cup of tea will always make me grateful. However, I think that I just couldn't gel with the narrating in the story. It was off to a great start, but I fell into a pattern of not wanting to pick it up again and then struggling through that feeling if I did, so thought it was best to put it down for now. (No fault to the actual story, it's a page-turner!)
I will most definitely pick this up again one day soon. Kate is a great storyteller, I just couldn't gel with this particular book at this time but hope to dive back in with a fresh perspective in the future.

Jestem świeżo po skończeniu tej książki i nie mogę uwierzyć, jak się skończyła. Nie spodziewałam się, że tak się to skończy.
Od początku do końca czytało mi się ją bardzo dobrze. Nie mogłam się oderwać od czytania. Cały czas trzymała w napięciu, zaskakiwała.

Kiedyś na lekcji etyki oglądałam film „Filozofowie”. Grupa studentów miała za zadanie wyobrazić sobie, że następuje wojna atomowa i pośród nich muszą wybrać tylko połowę, która otrzyma bezpieczne schronienie w bunkrze. I tu występuje dylemat moralny: kto ma większe prawo do życia. Fabuła tego filmu w małym stopniu skojarzyła mi się właśnie z „W kręgu kłamców”, bo tutaj też bohaterowie muszą zdecydować, kto z nich umrze. Tylko różnica jest taka, że nie określają tego przez wzgląd na sympatię, umiejętności czy inteligencję, ale poprzez W I N Ę. Tak winę, grzechy i kłamstwa, ponieważ każdy z nich jest winny tragedii, która wydarzyła się rok temu w szkole.
Grupa nastolatków wygrywa coroczne szkolne losowanie, w którym nagrodą jest luksusowy wyjazd wypoczynkowy. Niestety wymarzona wycieczka szybko zmienia się w koszmar, gdy zostają uwięzieni na totalnym odludziu w opuszczonym motelu pośrodku pustyni. Szybko zdają sobie sprawę, że coś jest nie tak, a utwierdzają się w tym, gdy każdy z nich dostaje wiadomość:
WIEM, CO ZROBILIŚCIE ROK TEMU. PORA, ŻEBYŚCIE ZA TO ZAPŁACILI.
I tak o to zaczyna się gra, w której co godzinę muszą wytypować najbardziej winną osobę, która potem zginie…
Jak już pewnie zauważyliście po ocenie, ja bawiłam się wspaniale. Tak wspaniale, że zarwałam nockę dla niej i kompletnie tego nie żałuję, mimo że potem byłam żywym trupem 😆 ale tak się wciągnęłam w tę historię, że MUSIAŁAM ją skończyć na jednym posiedzeniu.
Fabuła trzyma w napięciu i powoli odkrywa przed nami prawdę na temat tamtej tragicznej nocy. Wniosek nasunął mi się jeden: wszystko to było ciągiem przyczynowo-skutkowym.
Od samego początku miałam przeczucie co do jednej rzeczy, która potem się potwierdziła, ale w ani jednym procencie nie odebrało mi to radości z czytania.
Ciekawym aspektem książki jest pokazanie prawdziwej natury człowieka, która właśnie wychodzi na światło dzienne w momencie zagrożenia. Pod kątem filozoficzno-psychologicznym znajdzie się tu dużo intrygujących rozważań.

Ale czy każdy z nich jest winny?

Kiedyś na lekcji etyki oglądałam film „Filozofowie”. Grupa studentów miała za zadanie wyobrazić sobie, że następuje wojna atomowa i pośród nich muszą wybrać tylko połowę, która otrzyma bezpieczne schronienie w bunkrze. I tu występuje dylemat moralny: kto ma większe prawo do życia. Fabuła tego filmu w małym stopniu skojarzyła mi się właśnie z „W kręgu kłamców”, bo tutaj też bohaterowie muszą zdecydować, kto z nich umrze. Tylko różnica jest taka, że nie określają tego przez wzgląd na sympatię, umiejętności czy inteligencję, ale poprzez W I N Ę. Tak winę, grzechy i kłamstwa, ponieważ każdy z nich jest winny tragedii, która wydarzyła się rok temu w szkole.
Grupa nastolatków wygrywa coroczne szkolne losowanie, w którym nagrodą jest luksusowy wyjazd wypoczynkowy. Niestety wymarzona wycieczka szybko zmienia się w koszmar, gdy zostają uwięzieni na totalnym odludziu w opuszczonym motelu pośrodku pustyni. Szybko zdają sobie sprawę, że coś jest nie tak, a utwierdzają się w tym, gdy każdy z nich dostaje wiadomość:
WIEM, CO ZROBILIŚCIE ROK TEMU. PORA, ŻEBYŚCIE ZA TO ZAPŁACILI.
I tak o to zaczyna się gra, w której co godzinę muszą wytypować najbardziej winną osobę, która potem zginie…
Jak już pewnie zauważyliście po ocenie, ja bawiłam się wspaniale. Tak wspaniale, że zarwałam nockę dla niej i kompletnie tego nie żałuję, mimo że potem byłam żywym trupem 😆 ale tak się wciągnęłam w tę historię, że MUSIAŁAM ją skończyć na jednym posiedzeniu.
Fabuła trzyma w napięciu i powoli odkrywa przed nami prawdę na temat tamtej tragicznej nocy. Wniosek nasunął mi się jeden: wszystko to było ciągiem przyczynowo-skutkowym.
Od samego początku miałam przeczucie co do jednej rzeczy, która potem się potwierdziła, ale w ani jednym procencie nie odebrało mi to radości z czytania.
Ciekawym aspektem książki jest pokazanie prawdziwej natury człowieka, która właśnie wychodzi na światło dzienne w momencie zagrożenia. Pod kątem filozoficzno-psychologicznym znajdzie się tu dużo intrygujących rozważań.

+ szkoda mi troszke, ze tak skupilam sie na moim rozczarowaniu rozwiazaniem, bo gdyby nie to to bardziej skupilabym sie na watku romantycznym, ktory choc prosty i dosyc poboczny, to bardzo mi sie podobal!!

Just finished and what a wild ride. I absolutely loved this book. It had me guessing right up to the end I was so shocked by the way it did end. And As a horror fan I also really enjoyed the horror references as well. Every page had me hooked. Easy 5 star for me I loved how different each character was and how each one played such a massive part to the main plot. Such a good fun read.
