African Queens is an illuminating and richly researched historical account that brings long-overlooked female figures of African history into the spotlight. With powerful storytelling and engaging narrative flow, this book by Captivating History introduces readers to a diverse cast of queens whose legacies helped shape the cultural, political, and military landscapes of Africa.

The book covers legendary rulers such as Hatshepsut of Egypt, Nefertiti, Cleopatra VII, Amanirenas of Kush, Queen Nzinga of Ndongo and Matamba, and more. Each chapter presents a deeply contextualized portrait of these women—not just as mythical figures but as real, strategic, and powerful leaders navigating complex societal norms, foreign invasions, and internal conflict.

What stands out is the way the author balances historical detail with readability. You don’t need to be a history expert to appreciate the book’s exploration of dynastic politics, matrilineal succession, divine rule, and colonial resistance. Whether it’s Hatshepsut’s transformation into a pharaoh in a male-dominated Egypt or Queen Amanirenas’s bold military campaigns against the Roman Empire, the stories are vivid and thought-provoking.

The book also excels in its ability to humanize its subjects, exploring their vulnerabilities and the limitations imposed on them by their societies, while still celebrating their achievements and resilience. These women were not mere symbols of feminine power; they were tacticians, builders, diplomats, and warriors.

If there’s one critique, it’s that the book, while accessible and engaging, occasionally simplifies complex historical debates (such as the identity of Neferneferuaten or the fate of Cleopatra’s children). However, it more than makes up for this by offering a broad and inspiring overview of African queens who rarely receive the recognition they deserve in mainstream history books.

A must-read for lovers of history, particularly those interested in reclaiming the stories of powerful women from Africa’s past. Educational, empowering, and elegantly written, this book is a worthy tribute to queens whose legacies still echo through time.

I really enjoyed learning about powerful female figures through history, many of whom I didn't even know existed. Information is limited on some of these queens and rulers, but I still felt disappointed at the disparity of coverage between the well known and lesser known women. Taking into consideration the hundreds to thousands of years of time between now and when they've reigned, the stories shared of these African queens are great nonetheless. These are women revered in their home countries as heros, but complete unknowns to the rest of the world. I'm grateful to know their names.

I thought this book was fascinating. The stories of each queen, some well-known and others less so, are presented in a clear and concise manner. They are very interesting short tales and I was hooked from the beginning. I especially liked the Queen Mother of Benin, but all of the stories feature remarkable queens. Definitely recommended.

Starting with ancient Egypt, women rulers have happened in north Africa, west Africa, east Africa, and even on Madagascar. Many were in the *modern" era of the 19th and 20th centuries.Fascinating
