Experiencing Flow is a book about the concept of flow written by one of the world’s leading experts on the topic. It’s written in a simple, accessible, conversational, and easy-to-understand style. It’s light reading, and I often found myself in a mild flow state while reading it. The book feels very personal. It feels like sitting down with a wise person who talks about her 40+ years of experience with the concept of flow.
Jackson starts off the book by sharing how she came to learn about flow, how she connected with Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi (the Father of Flow) and other flow researchers and enthusiasts, and how flow was a constant companion throughout her life. She then dedicates a chapter to Csikszentmihalyi’s story and what he was like as a person. She then explains in simple terms what flow is and what it isn’t. In the rest of the book, she provides a plethora of strategies for experiencing flow more often. She puts a strong emphasis on mindfulness and describes it as one of the best ways to become better at experiencing flow.
My favorite parts of the book were chapters 5 and 11. In the former, Jackson explains how anxiety can get in the way of flow and how acceptance can be helpful in dealing with anxiety. I especially enjoyed the stories she shares about Steve Hayes, Kelly Wilson, and Akshay Nananvati – each of them found their own way to embrace and accept anxiety in order to live a happier, more fulfilling life. In chapter 11, Jackson shares a recent experience of adversity she had to go through. She details her struggles, her coping strategies, and what she learned about flow in the process. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about this difficult time in her life and what she learned from it.
To sum up, this is a fairly short and highly accessible book about flow, written by one of the world’s leading experts on the topic. If you’re interested in learning more about flow or want to be a little bit happier and have a bit more fun in life, this is a wonderful read. Highly recommended.
