TV reporter Pete Lemaster anticipates nothing more riveting than filming a short lifestyle segment for an upcoming college football rivalry when he arrives at the Jacksonville Waterfront pregame tailgate party. Then chaos erupts as a bystander stops an active shooter with an act of stunning bravery. And Pete suddenly holds a golden career opportunity in his hands—an exclusive video that goes viral.
With the citizen hero’s star rising among the Second Amendment folk, Pete, too, enjoys the perks of fame. But something about that now-famous moment feels off, so he uses his journalism skills to poke around. Suddenly, he’s not sure what he captured is the truth.
And now opportunistic political and media figures are threatening Pete’s life if he doesn’t back off. Can he blow the whistle on a coverup, out the real villain, and stay alive?
The Bystander combines the twists and turns of Catherine Steadman’s Something in the Water with a bit of Carl Hiaasen’s Florida snark.

This book was so good!!! When I say I was hooked from chapter one, I mean I sat down to read a few chapters and before I knew it several hours had gone by!! This is the true definition of a page turner. The story and the characters are so well written and the sense of tension and suspense continues to build throughout the story.
There are also some really timely and important topics in this story dealing with our US Veterans (the epilogue is a must read!) I don’t want to give any spoilers here, but there are a few emotional moments here that really had an impact on me.
This book absolutely needs to be on your radar - yes it’s very entertaining and I loved the twists, but there is a deeper story here too that the author did a great job with.
Oh Pete, I was really rooting for him! He has this amazing moment…but his gut tells him something just isn’t right. And it would have been easier to just walk away, but he is a truth teller at heart and needs to understand what actually happened at the tailgate.
I really liked the over all mystery in this story. Yes there definitely are some good twists and turns (and even some good funny moments) and I have to say the ending definitely surprised me!
TV reporter Pete Lemaster expects the same ol antics as he films a lifestyle segment for an upcoming college rivalry football game. 🏈
As chaos erupts around him with an active shooter incident, Pete realizes he is still recording and has caught the entire event on film- including the bystander that stopped the shooter!
As the story unfolds, Pete realizes what he captured on camera may not be the whole truth. Using his journalism skills and contacts he is determined to uncover the truth.
This book turned into a story with a statement! I won’t give it away but there is suspense leading to the heart of it all which will hopefully open more eyes to this real issue.
The book was well written with characters that I can see coming back to and stories that hit to the core. The Bystander is book 1 of The Lemaster Files and I can’t wait to see what he reports in next.
Thank you to the author, John P David, and Tule Publishing for the opportunity to read this book. I received an epub and am leaving my review voluntarily.
Knocked it out of the park on this debut mystery/thriller. Great hints of conspiracy theories without taking it into tinfoil hat territory. This book reads like a movie. By that I mean I felt I was watching the story unfold and it was riveting! I read this in one sitting (sleep deprivation worth it). Pete was an amazing character. He never stoped telling the story even when everything was stacked against him he went for the truth and settled for nothing less than the full story. The twists were amazing and the reveal so worth it! The subplot with him and Rebecca adds a nice bit of levity to a serious subject matter as well as frequent and entertaining calls from mom. Just a flat out fabulous read!!.

The Bystander; The Lemaster Files by John David, reporter Pete Lemaster thought it would be another day working the tailgate party better known as the cocktail party outside of the Florida Georgia football game. Although Pete is no stranger to hard hitting news his secret love is to do fun outtakes like this one. Unfortunately this game is sadly going to turn in to hard hitting news and Pete will be there to capture it all. he gets footage of a man who shoots a rifle into the air but the big news is a Samaritan runs up and shoots the rifleman dead and will become a national hero. for most small town reporters this would culminate into their big break but for Pete Lemaster the footage turns into his own Zapruder film. With government intrigue, a scapegoat, and even threats on Pete and his families existence. The first threat comes right when he scales the tip of the iceberg but when he learns he really is facing life or death it’s way too late to change his mind. with great characters even better writing and an action packed interesting plot the author offers authentic entertainment and a book I definitely recommend. I love to follow a story that isn’t predictable and you can follow the clues methodically until the OMG ending and that definitely is what John David has to offer with the Bystander. books like this or why I feel so lucky to be an early reader and they’re also why it makes giving my honest opinion so much easier. What a great mystery and an awesome read. Should there be other books with Pete I will definitely be down to read it.#BooksSprout, #TheBlindReviewer, #MyHonestReview,
The Bystander is a captivating thriller and the first book in the Lemaster Files series by John David. As someone unfamiliar with his work, I approached this novel with curiosity, but I was pleasantly surprised by the depth and quality of his writing. John skilfully weaves a narrative filled with intrigue, mystery, and escalating tension that kept me on the edge of my seat. This is truly an impressive debut, and he has hit a home run with it.
The story unfolds with Pete, the main character, who initially views a promising opportunity as a potential stepping stone in his life. However, what begins as an exciting chance swiftly morphs into a perilous adventure. Pete soon finds himself ensnared in a complex web of corruption where deceit is the norm, and the truth is often shrouded in lies and cover-ups. Conspiracy theories lurk around every corner, leaving him uncertain whom to trust. Yet, amidst the dark and foreboding atmosphere, John also injects moments of humour that provide a delightful contrast to the tension.
The Bystander is a relentless page-turner, with each chapter drawing you deeper into its gripping narrative. Its brisk pacing makes it incredibly difficult to put down, ensuring that readers remain enthralled until the very last page.
I eagerly anticipate diving deeper into Pete's journey and uncovering the new challenges and adventures that await him in the next instalment of the series.
When you see "caught on camera" footage, one tends to trust what is seemingly apparent to the naked eye. But we all know that there can be more to the story... goings on just out of screenshot, events not captured just before the recording starts, the aftermath, AI, clever or intentional editing, spin, censorship, and a whole host of conspiracy theories. Can you really trust what you see with your own eyes, or is there more to the story?
This debut thriller follows TV reporter Pete Lemaster who finds himself bearing witness to a crime and subsequent heroic act ... and he happens to catch it all on camera by pure happenstance while covering routine UF-UGA pre-game celebratory activities. His life is about to change in ways he could not imagine.
There were several things I really liked about this book. The MMC is likeable in that "every guy" sort of way that makes your local TV reporters likeable. He's a little vanilla, but a solid character who walks the gray zones of his biz with good intentions and isn't afraid to push the boundaries of what he is allowed to do (a little bit of a rule breaker). I also liked the setting around a historic college football rivalry, and the book's release is perfectly timed in that regard. The pace was persistent and moved the story along and made me want to keep reading.
My only critique is that I felt the reveal/finale was a little too convenient and maybe not as aligned with how I think the villain would have acted. But, hey, author choices, right?
I believe this book is the first of an intended series, and I would definitely be interested in more of Peter's investigative stories. A few things trickled out about Peter's past which hint that he might not quite be so vanilla after all. I'd like to find out what skeletons he has hiding in his color-coordinated khakis and polo closet.
Thank you to the author and Tule Publishing for the opportunity to read and review this ARC.

Pete Lemaster, a TV reporter, thought he was just filming a fun segment for a college football rivalry.
When an active shooter shows up, Pete’s camera keeps rolling and he captures everything, including the bystander who stops the attack.
At first it seems like Pete has the story of his career. The more he looks into what happened, the more he realizes things may not be as they seem. His search for the truth quickly puts him in danger.
This book was fast paced and full of suspense with a powerful message at the center. I am not usually a fan of politics in thrillers but this one handled it really well and kept me hooked.
The characters felt real and I enjoyed following Pete as he uncovered the truth.
A bystander has taken down a gunman. This bystander is now looked at as a hero!
TV reporter Peter Lemester has got the action on film. He is quickly shot to fame and it seems everyone wants a piece of him, but of course everyone has their own motives.
This novel explores so much more than what it seems. It delves deep into PTSD, veterans and the second amendment. We also have mystery and a little romance. Fantastic debut.
The Bystander was a really good read—definitely a page-turner. The suspense kept me locked in, and I found myself flying through chapters to see what would happen next. The characters were well written, and the story had just the right mix of mystery and emotion. I’m looking forward to reading more from John David.
I voluntarily read an advanced reader’s copy of this book for an honest opinion.
The Bystander the first book in The Lamaster Files series by John David. I didn't know what to expect with book I gave the excerpt a try and it started right up sounding intriguing and I decided to give it a try. I ended up enjoying the twists and turns of the story every time I put the book down I couldn't wait to pick it up again to see what happened next. The author has given us a great story from state to finish. I look forward to reading more by John David.

Pete Lemaster, a journalist, has his work cut out for him when he visits the waterfront to film and gets caught up in a shootout. The who and why isn't immediately apparent but while digging after, it opens up a whole lot.
Being from the UK, I don't know much about the US system when it comes to certain things but it seems hard for veterans to get help if needed. Assuming UK is similar but without delving the depths, I'm unsure.
I wanted to take my time with this as even though it's fast paced, I didn't want it to end! I really liked Pete as a main character, he seems like a good guy, one that's in the background that should be in the foreground. Rebecca is also a good addition, I like their connection and hope this becomes a series with new cases for them to work on together.
The epilogue ties the story together, full of action throughout, a lot of discussions had and investigations for Pete and his team to search through, keeps you on the edge of your seat!
TV reporter Pete Lemaster is ready to enjoy filming a short piece on the fans’ excitement before the football game during the tailgate party. Instead, he is in the right place to capture an unanticipated gunfight where a bystander, Walter Swanson, pulls out a gun as a shooter with a rifle appears. The bystander fires 3 shots, 2 of them killing the attacking shooter, and the third may have hit someone but it was not confirmed at the time . The bystander’s bravery is noted as he takes on hero status. The video of course goes viral. But something doesn’t feel quite right and Pete starts to look closer. But political and media people don’t want him snooping any further and threaten him if he pursues this. Will he back off as ordered? Or will he continue to try to find out the truth of what he really saw?
Well written, full of mystery, intrigue, drama, murder, threats, fast action, so many twists and some conspiracy theories. Pete is a reporter , at the waterfront in Jacksonville for the upcoming big game. While filming the tailgating parties and the people and shooter is suddenly there and fires a shot into the air. But out of no where comes a man who shoots 3 shots off killing the shooter, 1 of them hits an innocent bystander. Pete is right there to film it all, letting his TV station know that he has the film of it all. During the aftermath of it all, he investigates the shooter and the Hero, Pete is now being threatened, they want him to stop which now makes him want to find the truth. These characters and story are riveting and will hold your attention. Would recommend to others.

Some books just seem to hit their mark incredibly well. I received an advanced copy of The Bystander on a Friday evening and found myself immersed in a truly fantastic story. Suffice it to say, I got swept up in the excitement: The characters are interesting, the plot is immersive, and the pacing is pitch perfect.
If you're looking for a great summer read, or even a compelling escape from the everyday trappings of life, this is a fantastic choice. Not only did I truly enjoy it, but I'm looking forward to any future books in the series. Great read, indeed!
For this to be John David's debut, The Bystander is a good story following journalist Peter Lemaster. The pacing of the story was slow at times and some parts felt like words were just shoved in the page but overall the plot and concept was good.
I figured out certain angles early on (thanks to my love of crime shows) but the twists and turns will have mystery/thriller readers excited to turn the page and delve deeper into a conspiracy. The minor characters were well placed and added to the story's plot and gave Pete a sense of community. A good read for mystery lovers.
This year I only managed to pick up one mystery/thriller, and it happened to be Passenger 28 by Sebastian Fitzek. Most of my reading has been centered on Asian literature which is on heavier themes, a lot of healing, stories set during or after war that I bought myself and of course, romance ARCs which kept me busy. So stumbling on a thriller available for ARC readers felt rare, and I knew I had to give it a try. No regrets.
What I liked is how it blended information with story. It touches on U.S. gun laws, political landscapes, and PTSD among veterans—topics I don’t naturally encounter or fully relate to as a Malaysian—but it never came across as preachy or like I was reading a nonfiction manual. Instead, it was engaging, with enough wit and humor sprinkled in through characters like Pete, his colleagues, and his own intrusive monologues to balance the darker elements.
It isn’t just about solving the crime either. The book takes time to set up the bigger storyline that will carry into the rest of the series (this being book one in the LeMaster Files). That’s something I appreciate, and it does make me curious for the next installment.
That said, I did feel certain parts were unnecessary, like the overly long description about a chicken that stretched for a page or two. Without fillers like that, the book would’ve felt tighter and packed more punch. Still, as an entry into the series, it was entertaining and promising.
Thanks to John for the ARC! This review is voluntary and reflects my own thoughts.
What a debut novel! The BYSTANDER is fast paced, very well written and easy to read. I sat down with this one and was at 62% before the night was over.
Thank you to the author for this gifted review copy. All opinions in this review are my own!
While attending a football tailgate party, journalist Pete Lemaster, witnesses a bystander stop an active shooter situation. Not only does he witness with his own two eyes, but he also catches it all on camera. As the video goes viral, the bystander is recognized as a hero, the second amendment is praised but what if they all have it wrong? There's always more to a story......and Pete is determined to deliver the truth.
The first few chapters did give me the impression that this story may lean heavier into politics than I expected, however, the author handled the issues very thoughtfully. While I still found the situations and the themes heavy, the author wrote them in a way that didn't deter me from continuing. It was truly a gripping, page-turning thriller.
I really did enjoy the main character, Pete. He is strong-willed, determined and not afraid to follow through. I was cheering for him, MOST of the time. He needs to get his life together when it comes to his feelings for the women in his life and how he acts on them, though. 🙄
The Bystander, the first book in The Lemaster Files series, is out TOMORROW (9/24/25). This one should definitely make its way to your TBR!
Peter is filming a package at a football game for his news outlet when an active shooter begins to fire, only to be taken out by someone in the crowd. Pete catches it all on camera and follows the story to ends he never expected. But not all is sitting as expected in this story and there are some who don't want him poking around.
At the beginning, this had me thinking of Off the Air by Christina Estes. That book also focused on a media professional following a crime. However, this book seemed to go more into a path that seemed to direct towards the law and order side (even though Pete was an outsider and not any sort of police) for readers who are fans of that type of mystery thriller book. It had a more traditional treck through the clues and the chaos that Pete had to unravel, even though he wasn't a "professional".
The pacing was very quick and done well. I felt the book moved along at the perfect speed. It was exciting enough to keep you hooked without going to overboard. Fans of the genre will definitely find this an easy book to read and get caught up in.
Thank-you so much to John P. David for sending me a free advanced reader copy. My review is unbiased and opinions my own.
The Bystander is a fast, easy and intriguing read. It is packed full of suspense and action. Once I opened this book I thought I would read only a few pages, but the story gripped me right away. I am usually not much for politics in my thrillers, but I thought the author did a great job handling the issues. David delivered a strong, solid and meaningful message through his words.
The storyline started off fast and right into the action, for me it lost a little momentum in the middle, but it picked up around 75% until the end. As an avid thriller/mystery I did have the big twist figured out early on. I thought it was still really well done and unfolded well. I loved following Pete's journey in uncovering the truth about the shooting. I also appreciated the information regarding the military/military vets that are not receiving the necessary help from the government to surmount mental or physical health issues.
Overall, this was a good book that delivered a meaningful message. A fast, easy and gripping read that will appeal to many mystery/thriller lovers. Very well written debut!
✨ Thank you to @johndavid for my gifted ARC in exchange for an honest review.
'She's turned her lemons into the equivalent of a lemonade conglomerate.'
If an author asks me to read their book, I’ll skim the synopsis, say yes or no, and then forget all about it — so I usually go in blind. It could be fantasy, romance, or thriller and I’d have no clue until I start reading! That’s exactly what happened here. When I picked up The Bystander on Sunday, I was a little cautious (as I often am with debut novels), but I needn’t have worried. I was hooked from the very beginning — mystery, suspense, thrills, and even a few cringe-worthy moments!
The story felt unique — I’ve never read anything quite like it. The description mentions a shooting, but things quickly take an unexpected turn I didn’t see coming. It also shines a light on issues that are more common than many of us might realize, which made it all the more impactful.
Corruption, deceit, violence, and even a dash of romance — if you love a thriller with all that wrapped in, definitely grab a copy of The Bystander!
Thank you to John David and Tule Publishing for the opportunity to read and review The Bystander.
From the beginning, I was hooked. Pete was in the right place at the right time with the wherewithal to make the moves that could change his career projection. He went from being a journalist to being THE journalist that caught a Samaritan preventing a mass murder on film. Soon he becomes obsessed with the story and getting to know more details when it appears things are being held from the public. He starts chasing every lead, no mater how small or far fetched it seems. This story has many twists and turns with Pete’s job, but also with his love life. I enjoyed his interactions with both Denise and Rebecca. Proof that communication can truly help in situations and though it might not be exactly what someone wants, at least they aren’t left super confused. Without giving too much away, I will say that there are some controversial and important topics in this book. At times they can be hard for some to read, but they are important topics that do need to be talked about. The issues that are brought to light about Veterans struggles need to be talked about more frequently and louder, not to continue to be swept under the rug. This book kept my interest from beginning to end. I truly can’t wait for the next book.
I was addicted to this book from the first page. I can usually finish a noticing book in a few days and this book is one of those. Pete LeMaster is a reporter for a local news station in Jacksonville, Florida and stumbles on what could Be the story of his career while covering the Florida - Georgia pregame festivities. The author’s research of the storylines of this book is phenomenal. He covers the history of the teams rivalry, breaks down the sea turtle hatching season, and educated us on veteran suicide. As someone who has family members who were military veterans who struggled with behaviors described in this book, I really enjoyed the knowledge and information explained. Veteran suicide is a serious problem in the US, and we need to be more educated about this subject. The story line in this novel does just that. The characters are inviting and I loved every one of them. For a debut novel, John David hit it out of the park. I can’t wait for the second book of this series. Thank you to the author for sending me an ARC of this book.
Oof! Buckle up and don’t let go because this book kicks off from the start and doesn’t let up throughout. Hands down one of the most fun thrillers I’ve read in a while.
The writing is truly just fabulous and the characters are entertaining. It’s a one-sitting type of book so cancel all your plans and mute your phone.
I picked this book up just to flip through real quick and ended up reading the entire book. Haha - so much praise. Seriously, if you love fast-paced thrillers add this to your TBR. You won’t regret it.
I loved the journalism angle of the book - it was interesting and drew me more into the story. Full of action and a plot of gold this is a must read book.
The Bystander was an interesting story full of mystery and intrigue. Being in the right place at the wrong time led to the biggest story in Pete’s small town news career. His mom is always on him about opening doors for him to work a better position but he insists on doing this on his own. The author brings the reader a trigger inducing situation and the quest as to why during this story. Pete gets the footage of a lifetime. Active shooter being taken down, while hiding for his own safety. A sports reporter who is a 1 man show at a small station in Jacksonville. He knows it could be career changing but I don’t think he realizes how exactly. Getting involved in the parts of the situation he didn’t want to at first. It’s a rollercoaster that once the reader gets into it doesn’t want to put down. I know I didn’t, I was hooked after only a chapter into the book. Again this book can be trigger inducing but if that’s not the case you should really enjoy it.
When Pete goes to record a segment on a football rivalry, the last thing he thought he would capture was an active shooter...and the bystander that jumped in to stop the shooter. What could be a moment that could skyrocket his career just isn't sitting right with him...and his own investigating unravels that there may be a lot more to this story. Can he uncover and bring the truth to light...even with the threats coming his way?!?
This is one of those stories that read like a movie. I was sucked in from the beginning. I don't know if it is the current political climate we are in...but this felt very poignant in this moment. The story telling was engaging and the twists and turns kept me guessing how it would all turn out. This is definitely an author and series that I will continue to pick up!
The Bystander by John David is a definite page turner! Pete a TV reporter catches an active shooter moment stopped by a by stander. But Pete starts to second guess everything and then the twists and turns start. I don’t want to give too much away because it’s awesome how the story comes together. But let’s just say that the author John David did an amazing job with the plot, twists, turns and ending that was not expected. But I have to say as a person who has had a lot of family in the military there is a deeper story also. This is the first in a new series called The Lemaster Files. I will be getting the next book also because this one was just too good. (I also gave it to my 16-year-old to read when I was done).
The Bystander follows Pete, a reporter, who while covering a light hearted story stumbles into a potential mass shooting.
The writing is very engaging and I found myself invested in the outcome of the story very quickly. The beginning and end of the story are both very fast paced. I found it lagged a bit in the middle.
The characters are likeable. You definitely wanted Pete to win. There is quite a bit of political messaging especially around guns and veterans’ treatment. I won’t say more to avoid giving away any spoilers from the story.
I greatly enjoyed this debut novel and I would absolutely read any future work by this author.
I enjoyed this book immensely and I was very glad I picked it up! The main character Pete was brilliantly written and very easy to warm to. I particularly enjoyed seeing his relationships with the other characters progress. The plot was an interesting one and looks at some very interesting current issues. Without spoilers, it wrapped up in a satisfactory way! I will be recommending this one and I am also eager to read more by the author now too.
