Genesis of a Vampire: A Dark Vampire Origin Story Set in Ancient Nazareth

He was born with a hunger no orphan should possess.

In the dust‑choked streets of first‑century Nazareth, a sickly infant is left on the steps of an orphanage with no name, no history, and a darkness stirring inside him that no one around him can understand. As young Jacob grows, so does the hunger; a hunger that awakens with blood, granting him strength, longevity, and a power that sets him apart from every human soul he has ever known.

But Jacob is not yet a monster. He is still a boy. And boys, even cursed ones, can form friendships that change the world.
When Jacob crosses paths with a quiet, perceptive teenager named Joshua of Nazareth, the two form an unlikely bond forged in questions neither of them can answer. What is Jacob becoming? What is Joshua destined to be? And in a world of Roman occupation, orphanage brutality, and ancient darkness, can a creature born of hunger choose to protect rather than consume?

Genesis of a Vampire is a haunting, morally complex origin story set against the raw and visceral world of 1st‑century Judea. Written by a historian with over twenty‑five years of expertise in the ancient world, it delivers the kind of atmospheric, deeply researched dark fantasy readers have been searching for.

Dark. Ancient. Unlike anything you have read before.

This is where the Immortal Conquest Series begins. Jacob’s journey does not end in Nazareth; it has barely started. Across two thousand years of empire, war, revolution, and survival, one immortal soul walks the fault lines of human history.

Perfect for fans of Anne Rice, Simon Scarrow, Chelsea Quinn Yarbro, Glen Duncan, Justin Cronin, Bernard Cornwell, and Stephen King who crave dark historical fantasy and powerful supernatural origin stories.

My latest read was Genesis of a Vampire, Book 1 of The Immortal Conquest Series, by Jon Finn, read on a Kindle. I thought the concept of this story was intriguing, an immortal vampire born during the time of Christ. This first book covers the main character, Jacob’s, time while living in an orphanage, finding himself as he deals with being a vampire, and befriending Jesus while they were children. The series will go on to cover over two millennia and the many experiences he lives through.

This first book’s main story is mostly about revenge towards the orphanage bully, Paulius, though there aren’t many examples of actual bullying behavior. For revenge to be such a main focus, you’d expect many examples of it. Jacob also feels that he is a natural protector, though there aren’t many examples of that, other than his revenge towards the bully. But then he, himself, is a thief and murderer. Jacob’s friendship with Josh (Jesus) seems to be a side story, perhaps having more significance in future books in this series.

For me, while the story itself sounded promising, the book was actually a bit of a mess. Besides numerous misspellings, grammar and punctuation errors, there are also the many times where name spellings change (Paulius becomes Paulus, then switching back and forth), Josh (Jesus) and Jacob’s names are sometimes mixed up, and timelines seem to flip flop. One moment Jacob is a Roman soldier witnessing Jesus being crucified, and then he’s back to living in the orphanage. Another example, Jacob is out at night, having a drink in a tavern, then going back to the orphanage for the night. Then there are the brief mentions of McDonald’s and John Lennon thrown in, as well as landing in New York to attend a UN conference. These are odd considering that the story is taking place when Jesus was still a child. And while these things may not matter to many people, they take me out of the story, over and over, making it more of a chore than a pleasure to read. I didn’t find it to be a cohesively written story at all.

Genesis of a Vampire is a masterful blend of dark fantasy, historical fiction, and supernatural drama that completely captivated me. From the very first page, I was drawn into the gritty, dust choked world of 1st century Judea and the life of Jacob, a character whose struggles, darkness, and complexity feel incredibly real despite his supernatural origins.

Jacob is a fascinating antihero frail and bullied as a child, yet harboring an ancient, monstrous power that both terrifies and empowers him. The moral tension he faces, especially in his bond with a young Jesus, adds profound depth to the story. It’s not just a vampire tale; it’s a story about choices, conscience, and the line between monster and man.

The world-building is outstanding. The author seamlessly weaves biblical and historical details with vivid, atmospheric vampire lore, creating a universe that feels both epic and intimate. The violence, the tension, and the ethical dilemmas Jacob faces are all portrayed with nuance, making each moment pulse with suspense and emotional weight.

What truly sets this book apart is its emotional core. Jacob’s journey through centuries of human history, struggling with his curse while observing humanity’s rise and fall, is haunting, thought provoking, and deeply moving. The narrative balances action, horror, and introspection perfectly, making it impossible to put down.

This book is ideal for readers who love morally complex characters, historical depth, and a dark, immersive supernatural story. It’s the kind of novel that lingers in your mind long after you finish.

Genesis of a Vampire earns every one of its five stars gripping, atmospheric, and unforgettable. I can’t wait to continue Jacob’s journey in the next installment of the Immortal Conquest Series.

Genesis of a Vampire was a refreshing take on vampire fiction that stood out because of its historical setting and the depth it gives its main character. Rather than relying only on horror, the story explores identity, morality, and the struggle between human compassion and an overwhelming darkness, which made it much more engaging than a typical vampire novel.
Jacob is a compelling protagonist, and I found myself invested in his journey from the very beginning. Watching him wrestle with a hunger he doesn't understand while trying to hold on to his humanity gives the story real emotional weight. He isn't simply portrayed as a monster, but as someone searching for answers in a world that already feels harsh and unforgiving.
One of my favorite aspects of the book was the setting. First century Judea is brought to life with vivid detail, and the historical backdrop adds authenticity without ever slowing the story down. The atmosphere feels immersive, and the blend of history with supernatural elements is handled in a way that feels natural rather than forced.
The relationship between Jacob and Joshua was another highlight. Their conversations and growing friendship add an emotional and philosophical layer to the novel, raising questions about destiny, choice, and whether someone born with darkness inside them can still choose a different path.
Overall, Genesis of a Vampire is a thoughtful and atmospheric beginning to what promises to be an interesting series. It combines historical fiction, dark fantasy, and supernatural suspense into a story that feels both original and emotionally engaging. I'd definitely recommend it to readers who enjoy character-driven vampire stories with rich historical settings and moral complexity.

A Dark and Thought-Provoking Vampire Origin
Genesis of a Vampire by Jon Finn is not your typical vampire story. Instead of focusing only on horror or action, the book explores something deeper the struggle between humanity and darkness within a single soul.
Jacob is a fascinating character from the very beginning. Growing up abandoned, frail, and constantly bullied, he already feels like an outsider long before he discovers the strange hunger inside him. Watching his inner battle unfold as he begins to understand his powers makes the story both haunting and emotional.
One of the most interesting aspects of the book is its setting in ancient Nazareth. The historical atmosphere adds a unique depth to the narrative, making the story feel grounded and immersive. The relationship between Jacob and the young Jesus is also surprisingly thoughtful, introducing moral and philosophical questions about good, evil, choice, and redemption.
What stood out to me most was how the story focuses on Jacob’s internal struggle. He isn’t simply a monster or a hero he’s something in between, constantly questioning what he is and what he might become. That complexity makes him a compelling protagonist and sets the stage for the larger journey hinted at in the Immortal Conquest Series.
If you enjoy dark fantasy, historical settings, morally complex characters, and vampire lore that goes beyond the usual tropes, this book is definitely worth picking up.
It’s a strong and intriguing start to a series that promises to explore centuries of history through the eyes of one conflicted immortal. I’m curious to see where Jacob’s journey goes next.

Genesis of a Vampire is a fascinating and refreshingly original take on vampire mythology. Jon Finn masterfully blends dark fantasy, historical fiction, and supernatural drama into a compelling story that feels both intimate and epic in scope.

Jacob is an unforgettable protagonist. His struggle with a mysterious blood driven power, combined with his loneliness and desire to understand his place in the world, makes him a deeply sympathetic character. What truly sets this novel apart is its unique setting in ancient Nazareth and the intriguing relationship between Jacob and a young Jesus. Their interactions add depth, moral complexity, and emotional weight to the story without overshadowing the central vampire narrative.

The atmosphere is rich and immersive, bringing first century Judea vividly to life. The story explores themes of identity, redemption, temptation, and the eternal battle between light and darkness. Rather than relying solely on action, the novel focuses on character growth and difficult choices, making Jacob's journey feel meaningful and emotionally engaging.

Fans of atmospheric vampire fiction, morally complex antiheroes, and historical fantasy will find much to enjoy here. The promise of following Jacob's path across two thousand years of human history makes the larger Immortal Conquest Series especially exciting.

Highly recommended for readers who enjoy thoughtful supernatural stories with strong historical elements, emotional depth, and a unique twist on vampire lore.

I picked this up because the premise sounded interesting and ended up finishing it the same night.
What Finn does really well is build Jacob from the ground up. You meet him as this frail, sickly kid abandoned at an orphanage with nothing and nobody. The bullying, the loneliness, the feeling of being completely invisible, it all lands before anything supernatural even enters the picture. By the time the hunger starts showing itself you already care too much about this kid to look away.
The setting is one of the strongest parts. Ancient Nazareth feels rough and unglamorous, dry, harsh, desperate. It grounds the story in a way that makes the darkness feel more real. This isn't a gothic castle vampire story. It's dusty and raw and that contrast works really well.
The moral tension is what kept me thinking after I closed the book. Jacob is not a villain. He's not even close to one. He's a child trying to survive something he didn't choose and doesn't understand and that ambiguity is far more interesting than a straightforward monster story would be.
At 127 pages it is a short read but nothing feels missing. It ends at exactly the right moment. Highly recommend if you like dark historical fiction with real emotional weight behind it.

Took a chance on this one and came away genuinely impressed.
The story follows Jacob, an orphan in ancient Nazareth who grows up weak and isolated while slowly discovering a dark hunger inside him that he cannot explain or control. What makes this work is that Finn never lets the supernatural overshadow the human story. Jacob's pain feels grounded and honest before it ever feels fantastical and that emotional foundation is what gives the rest of the story its weight.
The pacing is deliberate but never slow. Each chapter peels back another layer of who Jacob is and what he might be becoming and the tension between his innocence and his instincts is genuinely uncomfortable in the way good dark fiction should be.
The ancient world setting is atmospheric without being overdone. You feel the dust and the heat and the harshness of the environment without the book turning into a history lesson.
My only reason for four stars instead of five is that I wanted more. The story ends just as the bigger picture starts coming into focus. But honestly that's less a criticism and more a sign that the writing did its job, I'm invested and I'll be reading whatever comes next in the series.
Strong, confident debut. Worth the time.

I wasn't sure what to expect going in, a vampire story set in ancient Nazareth sounds like it could go really wrong really fast. But Jon Finn pulls it off in a way that genuinely surprised me.
Jacob is such a compelling character. He's not a cool, brooding vampire, he's a sick, lonely kid who has no idea what's happening to him, and that vulnerability makes everything hit harder. Watching him navigate the orphanage while this dark hunger slowly takes hold felt real and uncomfortable in the best way.
The brief connection with a young Jesus of Nazareth is handled carefully and thoughtfully, it never feels gimmicky. It actually adds a layer of moral weight to Jacob's story that I didn't see coming.
My only note is that at 127 pages it ends just as things are really getting going, but honestly that just means I'll be picking up the next book. If you like atmospheric, character, driven dark fantasy with a historical backdrop, this one is worth your time.
A strong start to what looks like a really ambitious series.

Wow. Just wow.

This book absolutely blew me away. Jacob isn’t your typical vampire story—it’s an epic journey that stretches across 2,000 years of history, told through the eyes of an immortal soul who can never escape his own hunger or the weight of his choices.

From the very first chapters, where young Jacob crosses paths with a teenage Jesus, I knew this was going to be something special. The mix of history, mythology, and moral struggle gave the story so much depth, and the way Jon Finn weaves real events (like the Colosseum and the French Revolution) into Jacob’s journey is nothing short of brilliant.

Jacob is complex—sometimes terrifying, sometimes heartbreaking, but always fascinating. His search for meaning and redemption makes this not just a dark tale, but also a very human one.

I couldn’t put it down. If you’re into historical fiction, vampires with depth, or just a story that makes you think while keeping you hooked, you need to read this.

Genesis of a Vampire is a stunning blend of dark fantasy, historical fiction, and supernatural coming of age. Jacob’s journey from a frail, bullied child in ancient Nazareth to a vampire grappling with morality, hunger, and power is both tragic and compelling.
The story is atmospheric and richly detailed, bringing 1st-century Judea to life while exploring timeless questions of choice, redemption, and the nature of evil. Jacob’s bond with a young Jesus adds a fascinating moral layer, challenging him and the reader to consider what makes someone human or monstrous.
With morally complex characters, a gripping vampire origin, and an epic scope that promises centuries of intrigue and bloodshed, this book is perfect for fans of dark fantasy, vampire lore, and character driven supernatural drama.
A powerful start to a series that leaves you eager for the next chapter in Jacob’s haunting, immortal journey.

“Genesis of a Vampire” by Jon Finn

Jon Finn’s Genesis of a Vampire takes the reader back to 5 B.C., to the time of Christ’s birth, weaving a dark and unconventional vampire tale. The novel stands out with its rich historical backdrop and well-crafted plot—but what impressed me most was its philosophical depth.

Rather than simply showing how a person becomes evil, the book explores how we learn to justify—and eventually enjoy—our own darkness. This is a disturbing yet literarily powerful choice, turning the novel into more than just a piece of historical fantasy. For me, it’s a brutal commentary on human nature, on how violence and power can become seductive when masked as survival or justice.

I would recommend this book to readers who appreciate layered storytelling, moral ambiguity, and philosophical undertones in their fiction.

Jon Finn’s Genesis of a Vampire is not just a novel it is a revelation. From its opening pages, the book plunges readers into a richly imagined, deeply philosophical world that spans centuries of human history. The protagonist, Jacob, is more than an immortal being he is a mirror to our most human fears loneliness, guilt, longing, and the insatiable thirst for meaning. Set against a backdrop of ancient Nazareth, the fall of empires, and revolutions, the book skillfully weaves fiction into history with breathtaking precision. It is both an epic and an intimate journey, and one that I will never forget. Finn’s prose is elegant, his pacing deliberate, and the emotional undercurrent powerful. A must read for fans of literary fiction, historical fantasy, and dark philosophical drama.

Genesis of a Vampire by Jon Finn delivers a bold and atmospheric origin story that reimagines vampire lore through the lens of ancient history and moral struggle. Jacob’s journey from abandoned child to conflicted immortal feels hauntingly intimate, especially as his bond with a young Jesus challenges the boundaries between curse and choice. The first-century Judean setting adds rich texture, grounding the supernatural in a vivid, dust-choked world of survival and faith. Dark, character-driven, and emotionally layered, this synopsis promises an epic saga spanning centuries while never losing sight of the fragile soul at its center. A compelling start to what feels like a sweeping and thought-provoking vampire series.

Genesis of a Vampire surprised me with how deeply emotional and philosophical it felt alongside its dark fantasy premise. Jacob’s journey from a fragile orphan to a morally conflicted immortal is haunting and compelling, and his relationship with a young Jesus adds a unique layer of reflection on faith, morality, and choice. The historical setting feels vivid and immersive, making the supernatural elements believable. Jon Finn excels in depicting Jacob’s internal journey from a sickly orphan to an immortal vampire. His human form, particularly during his early years, is defined by vulnerability and resilience. Finn doesn’t just focus on Jacob’s transformation into a vampire; he delves into the struggles of a boy facing a cruel world, a world that only becomes darker as he grows older. The human side of Jacob his conversations with a young Jesus and his ongoing search for redemption give the novel a deeper, almost philosophical, resonance.

The central character's evolution from a frail orphan to an immortal entity is both heartbreaking and mesmerizing. His early life is marked by physical frailty, but his mind is sharp, questioning the world around him. As he gains power, the sense of isolation grows he's a spectator to history, yet unable to fully participate. His constant inner battle between retaining his humanity and succumbing to darkness makes for a gripping, emotionally complex journey that lingers with the reader long after the pages end.

I picked this up expecting a dark vampire story, but I found something much deeper. The emotional core of Jacob’s journey really stood out to me. His need to survive constantly clashes with his desire to remain moral, and that tension never feels forced. The historical elements are subtle but meaningful, giving the story a sense of realism. I also liked that the author trusts the reader instead of overexplaining everything. This book feels mature and carefully written. I would absolutely recommend it to readers looking for a serious, reflective take on vampire fiction.

This novel is haunting in the best possible way. Jacob’s struggle feels intimate, raw, and deeply human, even as the supernatural elements unfold. The historical setting adds grit and authenticity, grounding the darkness in reality. Somewhere within Genesis of a Vampire, the story transforms into a powerful reflection on morality, hunger, and choice. Every chapter adds emotional weight, making it impossible not to care about Jacob’s fate. A beautifully written, thought-provoking read I highly recommend.

"I received a free review copy of Genesis of a Vampire and this review is my own opinion."
Just think about this - you are a vampire during the time of Christ.
Your parents didn't want you and left you at the orphanage. So you started out life thinking you weren't wanted. But you feel something deep inside you - you just aren't sure how to act on it. Does he follow his desires or go with your conscience?
A great read, and definitely worth the read.

Jon Finn doesn’t treat history like a costume or a backdrop. He immerses you in it. You feel the dust of ancient Nazareth under your feet, hear the screams in the Colosseum, and sense the political unrest brewing during the French Revolution. But what ties it all together is Jacob our reluctant, cursed, and hauntingly human vampire. His journey across centuries is as emotionally gripping as it is intellectually fascinating.

This book surprised me in the best way. Genesis of a Vampire is dark, yes, but it’s also introspective and full of soul. Jacob isn’t your typical vampire he’s broken, thoughtful, and centuries deep in regret. The way Jon Finn blends horror with philosophical questions is seriously impressive. The prose is lush, and the scenes are rich with tension and beauty. It’s bloody, sure but it’s also beautiful. Easily one of the best vampire stories I’ve read in years.

I really enjoyed how different this book felt from most supernatural stories. There’s no rush to impress, just steady storytelling that builds over time. Jacob isn’t perfect or heroic, which made him more interesting to follow. The historical backdrop adds depth without distracting from the main character. This book feels carefully written and intentional. I highly recommend it to readers who want something mature and well thought out.

What stood out most was the internal conflict that drives the story. Jacob isn’t just battling enemies he’s wrestling with what it means to be human. Set against the harsh realities of 1st-century Judea, Genesis of a Vampire delivers haunting imagery and ethical complexity rarely seen in vampire fiction. The slow-burning tension, rich historical backdrop, and deeply flawed protagonist make this a compelling start to an ambitious supernatural saga.

Atmospheric and emotionally rich, this novel reimagines vampire origins in a way that feels fresh and meaningful. Jacob is not a hero you easily root for but that’s exactly what makes his journey compelling. His hunger is terrifying, yet deeply human. When the violence erupts, the stakes feel painfully real. Genesis of a Vampire stands out for its moral complexity and historical setting, making it a must-read for fans of dark fantasy who crave depth, not clichés.

This is definitely a different take on the story of Nazareth at the time of Jesus's birth. And it's due to one of his childhood friends becoming a vampire.

This is that child's origin story.

This story is not religious; it is filled with horror, bullying, and cursing, and is quite dark. But it's very interesting to think about how a vampire might have come about and how he'd change throughout history. I'm excited to see where this series leads.

a vampire like no other

I had nit expected a vampire baby, with the need to eat, sleep, bleed and a beating heart. This is a very brave start for a vampire. You can see the authors love of history, lots of historical facts. Adding the young christ to the story was another difference from the norm. Add a vampire with morals and wanting to be good, while knowing his underlying needs were bad.

A very novel approach to the vampire story.
