Rate this book

Isolated and sickly, he discovers a dark power within him—the thirst for blood, which grants him the strength to confront his tormentors. Amidst conversations with a teenage Jesus, Jacob grapples with profound questions of morality and survival. As he treads the fine line between his desires and his conscience, he must can he embrace his dark hunger without losing his soul? Welcome to the first chilling chapter of a haunting tale, where blood is both curse and salvation.

In the shadows of history, where the blood of the powerful stains the earth, there exists a creature of ancient secrets—Jacob, the immortal vampire born in the time of Christ. As empires rise and fall, he weaves through the tapestry of time, never claiming the throne but always shaping the destinies of kings and conquerors. With each passing century, his dark wisdom deepens, and his hunger for meaning becomes evermore insatiable.

From whispers in the Colosseum to the chaos of the French Revolution, Jacob is the ghost behind the curtain, both spectator and puppeteer. In a world fraught with bloodshed and betrayal, can one immortal soul find redemption, or will the darkness consume him? Join Jacob as he traverses the ages, reinventing himself in a quest that blurs the lines between power and consequence in this haunting series that intertwines history and the legend of the vampire.

My latest read was Genesis of a Vampire, Book 1 of The Immortal Conquest Series, by Jon Finn, read on a Kindle. I thought the concept of this story was intriguing, an immortal vampire born during the time of Christ. This first book covers the main character, Jacob’s, time while living in an orphanage, finding himself as he deals with being a vampire, and befriending Jesus while they were children. The series will go on to cover over two millennia and the many experiences he lives through.

This first book’s main story is mostly about revenge towards the orphanage bully, Paulius, though there aren’t many examples of actual bullying behavior. For revenge to be such a main focus, you’d expect many examples of it. Jacob also feels that he is a natural protector, though there aren’t many examples of that, other than his revenge towards the bully. But then he, himself, is a thief and murderer. Jacob’s friendship with Josh (Jesus) seems to be a side story, perhaps having more significance in future books in this series.

For me, while the story itself sounded promising, the book was actually a bit of a mess. Besides numerous misspellings, grammar and punctuation errors, there are also the many times where name spellings change (Paulius becomes Paulus, then switching back and forth), Josh (Jesus) and Jacob’s names are sometimes mixed up, and timelines seem to flip flop. One moment Jacob is a Roman soldier witnessing Jesus being crucified, and then he’s back to living in the orphanage. Another example, Jacob is out at night, having a drink in a tavern, then going back to the orphanage for the night. Then there are the brief mentions of McDonald’s and John Lennon thrown in, as well as landing in New York to attend a UN conference. These are odd considering that the story is taking place when Jesus was still a child. And while these things may not matter to many people, they take me out of the story, over and over, making it more of a chore than a pleasure to read. I didn’t find it to be a cohesively written story at all.

Genesis of a Vampire is not your typical vampire story, it’s a sweeping, emotional journey that blends history, faith, and the eternal struggle of good and evil. What struck me most was how deeply human Jacob feels, despite his immortality. From the very beginning, being abandoned as a baby and then bullied for his weakness, you can almost feel his pain and isolation. His transformation into something powerful, yet cursed, feels both terrifying and heartbreaking.

The conversations with a young Jesus were especially moving. They gave the story a spiritual depth I didn’t expect, raising questions about morality, destiny, and redemption that stayed with me long after I finished reading. The way the author ties Jacob into pivotal historical moments, the Colosseum, revolutions, the fall and rise of empires, was masterful. It’s like watching history through a hidden, darker lens, guided by someone who never ages, never dies, yet always feels the weight of time.

What I loved most is how the book doesn’t just focus on blood and immortality, but on the soul. Jacob’s battle with his hunger, his guilt, and his longing for meaning makes him one of the most complex vampire characters I’ve ever encountered. You end up asking yourself: is he truly a monster, or simply a soul cursed with a burden too heavy to bear?

This second edition feels polished, immersive, and incredibly engaging. If you enjoy stories that combine the epic sweep of history with the intimacy of personal struggle, this book is a must, read. I’m already eager to see where Jacob’s path leads in the next part of the series.

Wow. Just wow.

This book absolutely blew me away. Jacob isn’t your typical vampire story—it’s an epic journey that stretches across 2,000 years of history, told through the eyes of an immortal soul who can never escape his own hunger or the weight of his choices.

From the very first chapters, where young Jacob crosses paths with a teenage Jesus, I knew this was going to be something special. The mix of history, mythology, and moral struggle gave the story so much depth, and the way Jon Finn weaves real events (like the Colosseum and the French Revolution) into Jacob’s journey is nothing short of brilliant.

Jacob is complex—sometimes terrifying, sometimes heartbreaking, but always fascinating. His search for meaning and redemption makes this not just a dark tale, but also a very human one.

I couldn’t put it down. If you’re into historical fiction, vampires with depth, or just a story that makes you think while keeping you hooked, you need to read this.

“Genesis of a Vampire” by Jon Finn

Jon Finn’s Genesis of a Vampire takes the reader back to 5 B.C., to the time of Christ’s birth, weaving a dark and unconventional vampire tale. The novel stands out with its rich historical backdrop and well-crafted plot—but what impressed me most was its philosophical depth.

Rather than simply showing how a person becomes evil, the book explores how we learn to justify—and eventually enjoy—our own darkness. This is a disturbing yet literarily powerful choice, turning the novel into more than just a piece of historical fantasy. For me, it’s a brutal commentary on human nature, on how violence and power can become seductive when masked as survival or justice.

I would recommend this book to readers who appreciate layered storytelling, moral ambiguity, and philosophical undertones in their fiction.

Jon Finn’s Genesis of a Vampire is not just a novel it is a revelation. From its opening pages, the book plunges readers into a richly imagined, deeply philosophical world that spans centuries of human history. The protagonist, Jacob, is more than an immortal being he is a mirror to our most human fears loneliness, guilt, longing, and the insatiable thirst for meaning. Set against a backdrop of ancient Nazareth, the fall of empires, and revolutions, the book skillfully weaves fiction into history with breathtaking precision. It is both an epic and an intimate journey, and one that I will never forget. Finn’s prose is elegant, his pacing deliberate, and the emotional undercurrent powerful. A must read for fans of literary fiction, historical fantasy, and dark philosophical drama.

Jon Finn excels in depicting Jacob’s internal journey from a sickly orphan to an immortal vampire. His human form, particularly during his early years, is defined by vulnerability and resilience. Finn doesn’t just focus on Jacob’s transformation into a vampire; he delves into the struggles of a boy facing a cruel world, a world that only becomes darker as he grows older. The human side of Jacob his conversations with a young Jesus and his ongoing search for redemption give the novel a deeper, almost philosophical, resonance.

The central character's evolution from a frail orphan to an immortal entity is both heartbreaking and mesmerizing. His early life is marked by physical frailty, but his mind is sharp, questioning the world around him. As he gains power, the sense of isolation grows he's a spectator to history, yet unable to fully participate. His constant inner battle between retaining his humanity and succumbing to darkness makes for a gripping, emotionally complex journey that lingers with the reader long after the pages end.

Just think about this - you are a vampire during the time of Christ.
Your parents didn't want you and left you at the orphanage. So you started out life thinking you weren't wanted. But you feel something deep inside you - you just aren't sure how to act on it. Does he follow his desires or go with your conscience?
A great read, and definitely worth the read.

Jon Finn doesn’t treat history like a costume or a backdrop. He immerses you in it. You feel the dust of ancient Nazareth under your feet, hear the screams in the Colosseum, and sense the political unrest brewing during the French Revolution. But what ties it all together is Jacob our reluctant, cursed, and hauntingly human vampire. His journey across centuries is as emotionally gripping as it is intellectually fascinating.

This book surprised me in the best way. Genesis of a Vampire is dark, yes, but it’s also introspective and full of soul. Jacob isn’t your typical vampire he’s broken, thoughtful, and centuries deep in regret. The way Jon Finn blends horror with philosophical questions is seriously impressive. The prose is lush, and the scenes are rich with tension and beauty. It’s bloody, sure but it’s also beautiful. Easily one of the best vampire stories I’ve read in years.

What I loved most about Genesis of a Vampire is that it isn’t just about being a vampire it’s about being human. Jacob’s inner world is so rich and conflicted. He’s powerful, yes, but also fragile in his own way. Jon Finn gives us a character who wrestles with morality, survival, and his place in a world that keeps moving without him. It’s haunting and emotional, and I couldn’t put it down.

Jon Finn’s writing is absolutely stunning. Every sentence in Genesis of a Vampire feels deliberate moody, poetic, and drenched in atmosphere. Jacob’s journey across centuries is gripping, but it’s the quiet, intimate moments that stay with you. It’s not just a vampire story it’s a meditation on loss, faith, and time. Thoughtful and unforgettable.

Jacob’s story in Genesis of a Vampire hit me harder than I expected. Yes, it’s about a vampire, but at its core, it’s about someone trying to find redemption after centuries of pain and regret. Jon Finn handles this theme beautifully. The journey feels personal, emotional, and very human despite the supernatural setting. A powerful and surprisingly touching read.

When I started this book, I really was not sure what to expect. I have always heard stories about vampires and expected this to follow along those lines, so the beginning was confusing, but much softer and interesting. Without giving away the story, suffice it to say it was a most interesting, fun, and alternate view of an old yarn with a great start to his life. Great version, Mr. Finn!!!
