Are your students prepared for the problem solving questions in the 9 to 1 GCSE papers?
Arising from a writing day in response to the problem solving requirements of the National Curriculum, the authors have put together a set of tasks that encourage the use of reasoning and creativity while undertaking problem solving tasks. Some of the problems included appear to be more like examinations questions, while others are investigations rather than problems, but all are chosen for their worth in developing the mathematical thinking required to solve problems.
Section 1 offers ideas for engaging those learners who are not used to thinking this way and include extension tasks and prompts to develop the habit of mind required for problem solving.
Section 2 builds of these skills, broadening and deepening proficiency at solving problems
Section 3 focuses in on problems that are close to examination questions and require more skills than earlier ones. The problems also cover a range of different skills and topics.
GCSE Problem Solving also includes an accompanying download, guidance notes and a whopping 100+ whiteboard slides.
