Plum Valley Cowboys #3

Unconventional hearts - Edizione Italiana (Plum Valley Cowboys Serie Vol. 3)

Rate this book
Un’estate. Tre uomini. La proposta che unirà tutti.

Cooper

Will

Tru
Per me è semplice. A Will piace Cooper e Cooper è preso da Will. Io invece?

I gave the first two books in this series three stars each, so why did I read this book and expect to love it? Why do I insist on continuing series that I don't love? Who knows 😂

Also - I'm horrible at knowing what counts as a spoiler and what doesn't so maybe don't read this review, it's probably a spoiler.

Anyway, this book moved so slowly and it was long. 40% into the book Tru & Cooper are just meeting each other. Like, how can you be almost halfway into the book and the two are just now meeting? It continued to progress so slowly after that, I honestly felt like they never even got to know Cooper.

It felt like Cooper was never an equal in the relationship. They barely knew him, he started to feel like a third wheel. I actually really started to feel bad for Cooper. It almost felt like he was being used. I didn't like it, Cooper deserved better. The book moved so slow then the last 10% moves so quickly.

I really debated giving this 2 or 3 stars. I skimmed the end. But the last 5% was pretty cute and it was well written. Will I read book 4 after I barely even enjoyed books 1-3? Probably 😂

I related to Tru SO much. He's basically me 🥹 Loved to see a representation of asexuality where the character knows they have zero interest in sex but they still want connection, romance and affection. I'm asexual and demiromantic and I hardly ever find a character who fully abstains from sex throughout the whole book, regardless of whether they love their partner or not. No magic dicks!!! In fact the only other example I can think of is Upside Down by NR Walker. So this book just spoke to me and made me so happy.

I also loved the relationship dynamic in general. Tru, Coop and Will work so well together! The wider family are also so entertaining - I love the snark between Wyatt and Hawthorne so much, and how Easton is so old school about everything 😂

My reasons for not rating this five stars though are that the end is really rushed and there just wasn't enough content of them being happily in their triad/throuple. I wanted more emotional content around that decision, not just the brief chapter. I also wanted to see them together in their relationship once they all knew what was what, but then it was the epilogue.

Loved the story, there just wasn't enough of the actual relationship once it was agreed on!!

Edit after rereading it via audio: Blake Lockheart is amazing. He didn’t make me want to switch to eyeball-reading once, despite not having much time to listen due to the holidays. And ofc because of my need to rererewatch a certain show about two hockey players 🤣 I still stand with my original review, even though I liked Tru a tiny bit less than during my first read.

Original review:
Here’s the thing with mmm romances: many times, they end up being mm+m.

And the same happened here for around 80% of the book: we have the “main couple”, Will (Easton and Wyatt’s son) and Tru, his roommate from San Francisco. What made the pair interesting: Tru identifies as asexual, meaning that he has interest in intimacy, but not in sex.

Not. At. All.

And I think it might be the first book I’ve read so far where one of the MCs is not into sex. Will on the other hand is queer, and loves sex, but he’s ready to respect Tru’s boundaries.

Both Will and Tru are interesting and lovable characters, and esp Tru’s bluntness is refreshing.

Will and Tru spend the summer in Plum Valley, and that’s where we meet Cooper, who’s there for the summer, too, working at the Moore’s farm. Cooper is so very cheerful and good natured, it’s impossible to NOT fall in love with him. Will and Cooper are attracted to each other, and Tru encourages them to give in to said attraction - not that he wants and open relationship, but he wants to see Will happy and draws happiness from that.

It sounds a bit weird, I know. It’s difficult to explain: they don’t set out to be in a poly relationship, and they struggle with their feelings (well mostly Will and Cooper struggle, Tru is remarkably chill about it). But they complement each other, and in the end, you can feel how perfect they are together.

And that’s my main problem: it takes almost until the very end until you feel the harmony between them. For the most part of the book, it’s Tru and Will + Cooper.

And my second niggle: Tru and Will are 20 years old, but I swear they act like they’re AT LEAST 10 years older.

I’ll still rate it with 4 stars because all the characters (not only the main characters) are so well written, and I loved seeing the previous couples again. And it made me smile so often while reading it.

The beginning was slow, but once Tru and Will arrived in Plum Valley, and especially when they met Cooper, I couldn't stop reading.

Sexy and oh-so-sweet, Unconventional Hearts is, well ... unconventional in featuring an asexual MC and a poly relationship.

I've read other throuple stories, but this one is also unusual in that the three men are so young (20, 20, and 24).

I'm not a big fan of YA/NA, but I made an exception for this one because I love Plum Valley and Will's unflappable family.

I'm glad I took a chance because the MCs are quite mature and know what they want.

Tru is adorable and gentle. Coop is a goofy ray of sunshine. And Will is protective and good-natured.

The three POVs were distinct enough I didn't have to flip back to check who was narrating.

I also kind of loved the fact that Tru was completely nonplussed watching Will and Coop go at it. Sex is truly so uninteresting to him, his only thought when Coop is giving Will head against the fridge is, Hurry up, I need some parmesan cheese. 😅

Plus, the epilogue had me grinning ear to ear.

She did it again, Emmy Sanders knocked it out of the park again 👏🏾👏🏾 4 stars for the swoony fluff that was Unconventional Hearts!

Beware of possible spoilers...🙈

It took me a minute to get through this book only because I was in a weird mood for angst and this one is super low-angst. Once I got my fix, coming back to this was the perfect palette cleanser. While it wasn't my absolute favourite of the series so far, I still thoroughly enjoyed it, and those last couple of chapters had me swooooooning 🥰

I've always loved Will from when he was a baby in Fool Hearts and then when he organized an entire Pride Parade for his dads in his small town in Virgin Hearts 🥲 Honestly, all you need to know to get a sense of who Will Moore is can be summed up in this quote from a spin the bottle scene,

"He thanks the girl after their kiss..."

WHO DOES THAT?! 😭😭😭😭 I want one of him please, I'll do anything. I even volunteer to be Daisy the dog because the love he has for her too? UGH ✋🏾

Gahh and all three of them are some of the most huggable characters ever!!!! TRIPLE UGH 😩

I've never read an MMM before and I've always steered away from them because I get nervous that I will end up favouring a couple and the third person will be left out (at least in the mush that is my brain). THIS WAS NOT THE CASE HERE. Ladies and gentlemen, new trope mini-obsession unlocked 🔓 Thank you Emmy Sanders. I loved Will, Tru and Cooper in the different ways for their individual personality traits and even more when they came together.

Will and Tru are college sophomore roommates, and Cooper was the newbie-to-Plum-Valley cinnamon roll x golden retriever character that completed their triad. What worked so perfectly in this relationship was that at its foundation, it was three beautiful loveable sweet men finding the love they so truly deserved.

Tru and Will already had this history of being bestfriends and knowing each other so profoundly that the transition to boyfriends was seamless and perfect for them. I loved so much how Will was always wanting to be respectful of Tru and how open and honest they were with each other. We love when there are no miscommunication tropes amen 👌🏾👌🏾

Now with Cooper, first of all HE MELTED MY HEART 😭😭 He was just the happiest person who wanted to be a part of something. And I wasn't sure how he'd fit into their dynamic. Initially I thought with Tru being asexual, that Cooper's main role would be to cater to Will's sex drive. I was hesitant as to how the romance aspect would be developed but I'm so glad that Emmy also seamlessly included him into the already exisiting dynamic between Will and Tru that he never felt left out to me. I loved that she took a slow burn approach in including Cooper!

"Home. I smile... Wherever Will is, that’s home to me."

I guess you can say that Will was the sun in each of their universes 🤌🏾

With Coop on the quest to find his biological father, Tru healing from familial estrangement on the basis of his sexuality, and Will being such a strong LGBTQIA+ advocate in Plum Valley, there was a lot of depth to them that I did not expect which moved me to emotion many times. Overall, it read like day-to-day occurrences that worked to enhance their connectedness which made the pacing perfect for me!

I'm so excited because I know the couple that'll be featured in book 4 (book 4 omg!!!!) I wonder if it's another bestfriends to-lovers trope!! Can't ever get enough of those 😍

i liked the beginning and how will and tru realized that they liked each other but i didn’t like how they introduced cooper at all.
he truly felt like will’s sex toy.
after that i could feel zero emotions and i was rather bored. i couldn’t care less.
i love mmm but i honestly don’t like how it’s done here at all.

Once upon a time there were a gay man, an ace and a pan. This seems the beginning of a joke, but instead they develop such a natural and lovely love it is difficult not to adore it.

Dnf @ 60% . I genuinely had no interest in continuing further. tru was honestly insufferable to me . Being Ace doesn’t make you clueless & the situations he would put himself in with another man & act confused why Will would be upset about it ???

If this was about cooper and will or even just with a different dynamic between the three I probably would have liked it but throuples where one person just seems like the outsider dont feel right

This is Will's book, and though it can be read as a stand alone, you will enjoy this so much more when you read book 1 and 2 in this series first. That's where you'll meet Will, Easton's baby boy, growing up to be Wyatt's son as well. He's this boy with his heart in the right place - he's sweet and caring, and tries to do good. That also means he got into trouble more than once, letting his fists speak when someone made a homophobic remark, not to defend himself, but to stand up for the victim the slurs were directed to.
When he's finally reached the age to go to college, he leaves for San Francisco, and he finds Tru to be his roommate. They fast become the best of friends, and even though they are both interested in other guys, they never saw themselves taking that road together. They share everything, Will is also very protective of the sweet Tru, whose parent's denied him the moment they found out about his sexuality. He also identifies as asexual, and even though it's something I'm not familiar with, it feels like the author did a great job portraying him. His disinterest in sex felt real - he's all in for the romance and the cuddles and the sweetness of just being together, but sex is not something he's interested in.
When Summer comes and Will takes Tru home to Plum Valley (and what a delight it was to revisit that small town in the Texas hills again!), they slowly discover their feelings toward each other have somewhat changed. There's a strong bond between them, and their friendship has turned into something more, but it's fragile and new and they have to navigate carefully through the things that have a potential to undermine what they have found.
That's where Cooper comes in. Will and Tru meet him as the new ranch help and they immediately like him. There's a physical attraction between Cooper and Will too, and Cooper, with his beautiful smiles and his easy going character, attracts Tru's attention as well.

I don't want to spoil too much about how this relationship develops, but it was beautiful to see it grow, to see how they make it work. I loved how natural it felt, and how they fit so well. From the moment they met, it felt like meant to be. They just belong and it was the sweetest, most lovely thing to watch.

I really love this series - it's become one of my favorites this year and I'm curiously waiting for book 4!

I kindly received an ARC from the author and this is my honest, voluntary review

Unfortunately, this one didn't work for me as well as the others. The sex adverse ace rep was awesome, and I loved all the characters individually, but the way Cooper was added to this triad felt a bit weird to me. He felt a little like a sexual consolation prize in the beginning, and then, by the end, I was just bored.

I was really excited for Will's book and thought this would be one of my favourites, but it was not meant to be .

This was a sweet, low-angst story about three boys finding each other despite the odds and creating a beautiful relationship that worked for all of them.

I had already fallen in love with Will from the first book. We obviously get to see another side of him here as he is more grown up. But he is still this beautiful spitfire boy. He is so strong, full of conviction, compassion, honesty... *sigh* he is truly #boyfriendgoals.

We also meet his college roommate Tru - who is asexual. Tru was a delight. I loved how blunt and honest he was. He went after what he wanted without shame and I loved him so much. He is very touchy-feely with his boys and I honestly kind of want some Tru cuddles of my own 🥰

And lastly, we have Cooper. He is that golden retriever boy. He is a warm, reassuring presence - full of easy smiles, laughter, playfulness, and an eagerness to love others and be loved in return.

I won't go too much into plot or how the relationship between all three of them progresses but it was so lovely.

Also being back in Plum Valley was awesome. I loved seeing the characters from the first two books back in this one. And it was also so sweet to see Easton & Wyatt's relationship from their sons' perspective.

Now I will be (not so) patiently awaiting who is to come in book 4 👀👀

How is it that this author keeps hitting them out of the park like this??? 👏❤️ Somehow she has woven multiple unique gay romances, with diverse sexual identities, all into the sleepy little Texan town of Plum Valley. And I love how the characters are all interwoven and are either related to or know each other.

Here we have Easton and Wyatt's son Will, who we first met as a child in book 1.

But this time we are introduced to a triad romance. And to add extra intrigue we have Tru who is asexual. Heartstopper was the first book/TV show that brought an 'ace' character to my attention. But this book brought extra depth and has been an amazing education on the subject for me.

I adored seeing Will and his out there personality, with his big heart of gold and accepting nature, continued in this 3rd book.

Cooper is a new comer to the town, with a positive energy that is attractive to both Will and Try, but for very different reasons. My heart ached for him through the majority of the book, as he felt as though he was just an 'extra' to their relationship. But there is definitely an HEA here! You just have to go through the emotional wringer to get there. This author knows how to tap into those deep sweet sad emotions, that makes you look forward to the lighter soulful feelings that eventuate.

I felt all the feels with this one. ❤️❤️❤️

Dwie pierwsze części podobały mi się bardzo. Ta?

Jak jeszcze załatwisz mi takich facetów, jakich Ty masz, no to będę w niebie 😉
Ty cholerny szczęściarzu, jaka ja jestem zazdrosna o Twoja rodzinę, miejsce w którym mieszkasz i Tru i Coop, chłopie , szacun i foch.
Kocham Willa, Kocham tą serię
Dla takich książek warto być czytelnikiem
P.S. Szczerze początek był słaby, ale później cudo!!!
Czy polecam , pewnie, że tak !!!

Sweet poly romance with a sex-adverse Ace character, set in Texas. Glad to have the ace rep, but I wish authors didn't only ever write Ace characters who don't have sex--many of them have and even enjoy sex with their partners, which the author did make clear, but I feel like I only ever see one kind of Ace rep and it's a bit annoying. A little gooey and light on any kind of tension, but a sweet read.

Unconventional Hearts is a story about three people forming a relationship while honoring the boundaries each of them sets.

Tru is one of my favorite characters for his strength, self-awareness and maturity.

Will, we were already familiar with him from Fool Hearts, and it was great to learn more about him and see him find his own HEA.

Cooper is another new character but it was unavoidable to like him from the start and appreciate his easy-going attitude.

The three of them together set the rules for their relationship and determined what worked for them.

Even though it could be read as a standalone, I think you'd enjoy it more if you read Fool Hearts first.

My favorite so far. I liked Will since book one, I’m happy he got his own story and not one but two boyfriends. Tru and Cooper are just as adorable as Will. I would have loved that Coop was included in the relationship a bit sooner BUT I know the timing was perfect.
Overall this was so sweet, I love how they cared for each other’s needs.
Gotta say this was very educational for me as well so I will be recommending this one a lot

5⭐️ Well, this was the cutest darn thing I’ve ever read. Tru, Will, and Cooper were all so lovable and charming in their own ways and they just fit so well together.

This was actually my first MMM book and I wasn’t sure how much I was going to like it but I should have had more faith in this awesome author because she won my heart over with these adorable characters.

Awesome read if you want something low-angst and very sweet.

I knew from the first 10 pages I was going to love this book 🥹 it’s an amazing love story about friendship, acceptance, openness, trust and of course, love. I’ve been looking forward to Will’s story since the first book and he completely won my heart.

This cowboy romance has:
🍂Best friends to lovers
🍂Asexual rep
🍂Poly rep
🍂Lovers to friends to more
🍂TWO golden retrievers who love helping other people
🍂One snarky ace who doesn’t know boundaries when it comes to his best friends sex life
🍂Cameos from all your former favorite Plum Vallians

Tru is so adorable! He’s sweet and kind and just wants to find a love who accepts his asexuality point blank - no pressure, no waiting for things to change, just him as he is. Will is our kind cowboy, hes outgoing and fun and flirty but also so protective and sweet, always helping others. After a spin the bottle kiss they can’t stop thinking about but don’t want to ruin the friendship over, they head to Plum Valley for the summer. Here they meet the hunky new ranch hand Cooper, the giant golden retriever of a man who’s always happy go lucky, finding the beauty in the little things.

Cooper and Will hit it off sexually right away and agree to keep it casual - even though they both feel a deeper pull. Things get complicated when Will and Tru talk about their feelings and start dating. They continue a friendship with Cooper which turns into more for both of them in different ways after a lot of communication (all parties have some past baggage and insecurities that they talk through, I love emotional maturity). Through all the fun and banter and shenanigans, these men really do grow and fall so deeply, it’s so so cute! I love them all so much and they deserve the happiness they’ve found with each other, even it’s a bit unconventional.

"You've always loved big, wildly, fiercely, despite what others thought. So it doesn’t surprise me that you have enough love in that heart of yours for two.”

I can’t put into words how perfect Emmy’s stories are. She writes these amazing stories that are beautiful, kind, patient, and tender. They flow so well, and they make you swoon, smile, and feel completely at peace.

You can read the novels on their own, but I don’t recommend it. They are a family, and progressively knowing them through each novel is part of what makes each story so incredible. This story about Wil is a case in point, we’ve seen him grow up, love his family so incredibly, and now, with his own story, his love, it’s amazing. Not to mention getting to see the people from previous stories will make you happy all over again.

This family, the people of Plum Valley, are special. As is this fascinating triad. They are all wonderful as their own people and their coming together was perfect. Their dynamic, their relationships with each other, and the progression - it was exceptional, and of course, the representation of both a poly relationship and someone asexual was pretty great to see.

I'm so glad this series isn't over yet, because I can't bare to part with Plum Valley just yet.

Tru is ridiculous

I tried my hardest to like this story. Copper and Will are the best and deserve so much but Tru...by all that is holy Tru had to be the most insufferable person ever. Being ace doesn't equal stupid and Tru was nothing but dumb throughout the majority of this story. I think this is because Tru was written as though he was brand new to living.

He put himself in terrible situations and acted as if everyone was expected to act and feel as he did. It was all around extremely awkward. I think the best example of this is when he and Copper decided to swim in his kiddie pool. Copper asked if he wanted some swim trunks but Tru just chucked off his clothes and left it at that. He didn't seem to notice the effect this had on Copper and was surprised when Will responded in a negative way. Dude is sitting there in wet cotton underwear and is wondering why his boyfriend is concerned. At one point, before he and Will got together, he sat there wating a bowl of cereal and watched while Will and Copper got intimate. Something neither of them knew about. For some reason he acted as if he couldn't understand why anyone was upset.
Like no, Tru, that is creepy asf.

The fact that he is Ace is used as an excuse as to why he has zero skills when it comes to social interaction and s3x. He knows what he is doing. He knows that others are attracted to him. He knows that people will take the things he says and does the wrong way, but he does them anyways. It doesn't give people the right to do anything to him of course. Consent is very much important but he constantly takes actions against others without a care on if they consent or not because of course, he is ace and that is enough of an excuse in his head.

The only reason I am giving this two stars is because of Copper and Will. I honestly think they make a better couple as Tru just gaslights them into catering to his demands the whole time. They are just along for the ride. If the focus had been on one or them and Tru this would get 1 star with the implication that it is truly 0. I have never hated another character in this series like I hate Tru.

I wasn't even going to read this book, yet...here I am. I'm a sucker for MMM romances & after reading Dix, I was interested in this series. Definitely was gonna start it in order, until I saw this one 🤷‍♀️.

I'm atleast glad the next book is releasing this year, I may just read this series whole then!

Tru (asexual) & Will (queer) are 20, Cooper (pan) is 24. They're all old souls though, so mature. It's admirable. Angst wasn't high, heat amount was good (3/5). Chemistry was very good (4.5/5). I loved the romance in this book (6/5). This was cute, lovely & I loved to see the 3 grow as a triad & make their relationship official. And, I love Will's quirky But accepting family!

I had plenty of laughs, some oh shits & few tears too!

I may or may not write a longer review but I definitely loved this story!

I can’t publish my review for some reason, it keeps showing error/blocked content which is a first for me.

Anyway this was just a fitting story for Will, we saw in the previous books how much love he has to give and this was a culmination of that. A lovely story that adds so much depth to the series.

Oh my freaking goodness, Unconventional Hearts was SO swoony and sweet!! I am utterly obsessed with the Plum Valley Cowboys series, and @emmysandersmm can basically do no wrong. This book handles ace rep and poly relationships with such care, and if you are looking for a seriously s3x positive read THIS IS IT.

Unconventional Hearts follows Wyatt and Easton's son Will to college in San Francisco, where he ends up rooming with Tru. Though they quickly become close friends, things never progress beyond that until Will and Tru inadvertently kiss at a party. They both realize they have feelings for each other, but things are complicated by Tru's asexuality. He worries that Will might miss s3xual intimacy by being with him, and Will worries that Tru will never reciprocate his feelings. When they end up spending the summer together in Plum Valley, Tru pushes Will to hook up with newcomer Cooper, who Will is obviously attracted to. When Will and Tru finally decide to become a couple, they all agree that Will can keep seeing Cooper on the side. However, what will they do when they all want something more from each other?

I LOVED the positive way Emmy navigates the topics of asexuality and poly relationships. Will and Tru are SO SWEET together, and I loved the way they are so sensitive to each other's needs. And as much as I love both Tru and Will, I was ALL IN for golden retriever Cooper (who is literally described that way, ALWAYS my favorite). I sort of hated that he was on the outside looking in for much of the book, but the way things resolved between the three guys was really perfect.

I was elated that this book brings back SO MANY of the characters from Fool Hearts and Virgin Hearts - so fun to see them again! Wyatt and Easton as goofy dads might be my favorite part, I will literally never get enough of those two.

This was my first MMM book, and definitely not my last. I'm also NOT done with my Plum Valley Cowboys era - I'm just waiting for a break in my TBR to read another. If you want swoon (and a little southern drawl) with your spice, pick these up for sure!
