In this sapphic romance, a superstar women’s college basketball player and a commitment-phobe college student navigate complicated feelings—and busy schedules—after a photo of the two of them goes viral and fans theorize that they’re a couple.
Maya’s goals are keep her grades up so she can go to graduate school, prove to her hometown that she can handle the Colorado cold, and avoid the mess of romantic relationships by keeping things casual with everyone.
Theo is on the fast track to becoming the future of women's basketball, and she's been preparing her entire career for it. She just didn't realize that she'd become a celebrity in the process—or that people would care so much about her personal life.
When a photo taken of the two of them after a game sparks dating rumors, Maya uses it as a way to get closer to Theo—and as a way to hopefully get over her crush on Theo in the process.
The only issue? Theo seems to like Maya, too, and she’s really charming...maybe even charming enough for Maya to let her walls down.
Josie Mae (she/her) writes small town-adjacent lesbian & queer romance from her not-so-small town. She un-ironically says yeehaw despite being a city girl and spends most of her time daydreaming about wide open spaces (and being swept off her feet by a cowgirl). You can find her on TikTok and Instagram @josiemaebooks.
I was really excited to read this because I love sports and I love queers. I'd only heard good tings about the author, and so I was primed for a fun story. Unfortunately, I was entirely underwhelmed by this entire story. Essentially, it's a story of two characters who meet and fall in love, which is completely fine. However, the characters were flat and the entire book suffers from so much telling and almost no showing, so you're stuck just reading monotonous, repetitive thoughts that don't align with the entirely lukewarm characters.
In the first chapter you're introduced to a seeming party girl, Maya; however, that's the last time she's this party girl vibe. She has commitment issues for really no reason, and it feels like her entire personality is not knowing anything about basketball-- a pet peeve of mine because it's truly not that hard to get the basics of a game with a devoted friend like Iris spelling it out multiple times.
We then meet Theo, the hot shot, future WNBA star, stone top who is motivated and driven. That's her entire schtick. She plays basketball. She's simultaneously a hearth throb and player, and then not that at all?
These two then go back and forth for about 60% of the book about if they should date and if they are dating and if they even like each other despite having literally just a handful of conversations (the telling and not showing). There's also a loosely hinted at "fake dating" ploy although that isn't an actual thing. There's no stakes at all in the book, and I can't express how much I think the characters are under- and over-written at the same time. You spend pages in their swirling internal monologues and then their conversations are only 2 pages at best.
Overall, I thought the characters were uninteresting and the plot was vague, the pacing was slow.
3.75 i liked this a lot, however the non third act breakup that kind of was felt unnecessary and could have been fixed way earlier if they just communicated but whatever! sapphics for the win!
thank you to tales & teacups and josie mae for an advanced copy in exchange of an honest review
First sapphic romance that wasn’t insanely cringe to me, but I felt like there was not enough backstory given to either fmc. Did I only read this to satiate a Paige Bueckers obsession??? Possibly…
I need a Theo in my life 😭😭 I wish they had communicated a bit more about their fears and stuff, but I love good drama so it's fine. I can't even describe how I felt while reading it. The book totally captivated me and I wish it all existed in real life
Was it the best book I've read? No. Did I skip some paragraphs detailing the same thing over and over? Yes. Did I still enjoy myself while reading this? Also yes.
Characters were sweet, setting was fun, book was enjoyable.
I love a good sapphic sports romance! Tip In follows Theo, a star college basketball athlete who is on her way to becoming the first draft in the WNBA, and Maya, who doesn’t date and obsessed with school. Theo and Maya end up fake dating once a photo emerges of the two of them online.
I really enjoyed this book. It was slow and dragged out at times, but I do feel it is necessary for the storyline. It shows that these two characters break their own rules for each other. Theo learning that she can have both basketball and love, and Maya can break down her walls and fall in love. There were a couple of good open door spicy scenes too, which is always a plus! Theo and Maya are a relatable too! I thought it was cute how Josie Mae portrayed how WLW just sometimes can’t tell if it’s a friendly/flirtatious vibe or truly an ‘I’m super into you’ vibe. Theo and Maya both have feelings but can’t read if it’s real or just flirtatious banter. The struggle is real sometimes!!
I would recommend Tip In. Overall, characters are well written, there is character development, spicy romance, and if you’re into sports, it follows basketball really well.
Do you remember the feeling of your first crush? Not the one that the world knew about, but the one that gave you butterflies just by thinking about them. This book is THAT feeling encapsulated. Theo and Maya have fully thrown me into my #basketballromanceera. The way I GASPED at some of these scenes was comical. I could not stop kicking my feet throughout this story! The longing between these two - the pining - was just *chef’s kiss* and I’ll be needing 14 more immediately.
Theo and Maya are very black cat/golden retriever energy. And I’m just saying, Theo is 100% vibes (coming from a black cat herself). A tall, muscular D1 athlete with a cocky court presence but a total down-to-earth person off it? 🥵Sign me up yesterday. I think my new motto going forward is going to be “How would Theo handle this?” Maya is actually the “fuckboy/commitmentphobe” of this story, but I love her character growth with it. (Partially because her bff Iris sets her straight no less than twice…partially because the stereotypical speed of lesbian relationships.) The importance of having a good circle of people to communicate your fears and worries, people!! Commutation 👏🏻 Is 👏🏻Key 👏🏻 (Coming from someone who is working on her own daily.)
I read many reviews that said Maya’s miscommunication/lack of communication was a downside of the book. However, I loved to see the representation and the thoughtfulness behind how to deal with it. I think that latter part is important: how to deal with lack of communication correctly because communication is what keeps relationships alive. Theo’s patience is legendary, though, and I bow to it. Well done to the author for portraying this so realistically.
Now, excuse me, I need to go to a women’s basketball game STAT. Thank you to Teacups and Tales and author for letting me read the ARC of this book. Josie Mae, I am purchasing this book and shoving it on all my friends. Congrats on your debut!
Received an ARC of Tip In, and I am SOOOO thankful for it. Tip In is a sapphic college sport romance, with open door spice, and sweet romantic gestures!
This may be a new comfort read for me. Not only did I feel so connected to the storyline, but I could see a little of both MCs in myself. Reading a sports romance will always be my favorite genre, but Tip In really had a hold on me. I found that I couldn’t put it down, and hoped more pages would pop up so I could continue following Theo and Maya’s relationship!
I look forward to any and all books Josie Mae releases!!
I rarely reach for romance, so when I signed up for the ARC of Tip In, I fully expected to step out of my comfort zone… what I didn’t expect was to fall absolutely OBSESSED with this book !!
From the very first moment Theo and Maya see each other, there’s a spark.
Maya’s never been big on commitment, and Theo has dedicated her whole life to basketball and is about to be drafted into the WNBA (!!). A post-game photo sparks dating rumors, and Maya (lowkey hoping to get over her crush) proposes a fake relationship. And Theo? She’s just happy to have an excuse to spend more time with Maya 😭
Even though fake dating is big part of the premise, I think the real focus is how their connection grows.
This is a slow-burn romance done right: soft, mindful, and emotionally responsible. I LOVED how both characters had their own goals and dreams, and the relationship never asked them to give that up. There was toxic drama, no rushed decisions. Just two people genuinely trying to figure out if love can fit into their already full lives.
AND OH MY GOD, THEO MCCALL. That’s it. That’s the review.
I’m lN LOVE. She’s calm, mature, wildly talented, and still so grounded?? Protect her at all costs.
And Maya… Maya my girl is on a journey lol. She’s figuring out what love looks like when it’s healthy and safe, and even though I wanted to shake her sometimes (therapy, babe, please!), I still adored watching her grow.
I only wish we had more of their cute intimate moments! like did we really not get a WHOLE Valentine’s Day chapter?? GIMME. I’m also incredibly curious about Danny and Iris, so fingers crossed for future books !!
All in all: unexpectedly obsessed. Couldn’t put it down. Read it every chance I got and finished it faster than I thought I would 🥹🤍
I’m so honored to have the chance to read an ARC for this book, and encourage all of you to give it a read! It’ll be out on the 1st of July, and you can request an e-ARC on NetGalley✨
4 ⭐️. this book had a lot of tropes that normally bother me but it got away with it since they’re lesbians. except the ending, maya bugged me soooo bad. but i liked the rest of it a lot and i liked their chemistry.
I received an ARC of this book & I really liked it! The yearning is written phenomenally and made it very hard to put down. This book is definitely filling a gap in the market for sapphic sports romance! The fake dating plot is pretty weak and doesn’t really impact the story much but regardless I still really enjoyed the read and getting to know the characters. I hope there’s more to come in this universe. I’d give it 4.5 stars so I rounded up.
„She was the running in the sprinklers in the summer as a kid, getting tipsy and silly with friends over drinks on a sunwashed patio during happy hour kind of fun.”
“For the first time ever, things started to make sense. Crushes made sense, love songs made sense. All of the big, gigantic, swirling feelings that make romance so appealing suddenly made sense.”
First, I want to thank Josie Mae and Tales and Teacups for allowing me to read this novel ahead of release!
This book was everything I wanted from a sports romance. I loved the setting, the characters, the sport descriptions.
I personally didn’t know anything about basketball before reading this. I have never watched a game, not even in the olympics last year. But even though I was a basketball newbie, this book never got confusing for me. I think that is one of the most things about sports romance; that everyone can enjoy it regardless of their sports knowledge. The basketball games take up a lot of space in this, because they are important to plot, obviously, but they never felt boring, or like too much fancy talk. I really enjoyed reading the game scenes because the focus during them was always on the atmosphere in the stadium.
What I enjoyed about the characters was that they were really multilayered. There was actual development throughout the book, which I really enjoyed. Every single character in this book felt well thought out. The best friends, teammates, and even parents of the main characters felt like full people and just as real as the main characters.
The romance between Theo and Maya was amazing. Their chemistry was insane from the moment they met. The day I started this book I stopped reading at about 25%, and even on that day I was already giggling, kicking my feet and screaming at them to just kiss already. There was a fake dating trope involved but it was so quickly over, that I wouldn’t even mention it. The book is written in dual first POV, so its just 80 pages of both of them saying how much they want it to be real. I still really enjoyed it though. I wouldn’t call this book very spicy, but there were two (very good) sex scenes.
One thing that I felt was different from most sports romances I’ve read, was that the sporty person isn’t known for being a player, or a dick, so I really enjoyed that.
I’m really excited for the next book in the series, and I need as many people as possible to read this before that, so we can all fangirl together!
I agree with one review I read that said it was a lot of telling instead of showing. As many pages as there were unfortunately there was a bit of a “go girl give us nothing” sometimes. That being said I still enjoyed it I always LOVE a sports romance
Pretty good debut novel. I love sapphic sports romances, so when I heard about this, I knew I was going to read it.
I have to say that Theo and Maya being shy around each other is my favorite thing! Theo is the star basketball player - celebrity status. Maya is the smart, flirty, party girl who is pretty sure of herself. However, whenever they're around each other, confidence is lost! Super cute.
A pretty good read. A slow burner with lots of angst and spice!🌶🔥❤️🔥 Can't wait for book 2.
Wow on a generational run of reading romance books rn. This was solid, I liked the characters and their chemistry was good. The pacing of the first 1/4 was great but then when we time jumped like 6 months it was a bit much. Also, the fake dating plot didn’t actually involve them fake dating at all and really was not needed imo. I wish we got to see more of the resolution between them and like talking it out.
I am Josie Mae's biggest fan, and if Josie Mae has no fans, it's because I'm dead.
Did someone say new favourite romance???
Thank you SO much to Josie Mae and Tales and Teacups @talesandteacupspr and NetGalley @netgalley for this eArc.
Tip In is a basketball sports romance between Theo Mcall, a soon-to-be basketball pro, and academic WEAPON, Maya. When Theo and Maya meet at a college party, they instantly hit it off, leading Maya to watch Theo's next game.
But when photos of Maya and Theo circulate social media, everyone is obsessed with them. Maya and Theo decide that fake dating could increase publicity for Theo before being drafted. But what if it's not fake? What of they're both secretly hoping the other likes them back?
URGH, THIS WAS SO PERFECT!! AND IM IN LOVE WITH THEO, GIVE ME ALLLLL THE DESCRIPTIONS OF HER ARMS AND ABS 😍😍
Tropes: 🩷 Fake Dating 👭 College ✨️ Sports Romance 💜 Sapphic
Spice Level: 🌶🌶
(And trust me, Theo is a GIVER. The spice is goooddd)
I was hooked! This sapphic romance totally stole my heart! It’s my first WLW book, and I loved every second of it. The slow burn was so satisfying, and watching Maya and Theo’s relationship develop was just awesome. When it comes to the spice, Theo is definitely the giver — I’m now in love with her! Give me more descriptions of her abs and arms and how safe they feel please!!!
The fake relationship aspect was hilarious and kept me hooked to see how far it would go, especially with both Maya and Theo’s perspectives. I was completely drawn into that whole “does she or doesn’t she” vibe from the start — Josie really knows how to keep you wanting more.
Maya’s growth throughout the story was amazing to see, especially her working on her communication. It was a frustrating process at times, but Josie handled it SO well, making her development so genuine and believable. Watching her open up more and come into her own was such a highlight.
I absolutely loved how Josie wrote about Maya and her mom’s relationship—so genuine and relatable, not just some cliché story.
Overall, Josie created a brilliant character-driven story, and now I really want to learn more about basketball! I can't wait read more about her, Maya, and the whole crew. Can’t wait to see what’s next!
Massive thank you Josie Mae and talesandteacupspr for the ARC opportunity - all opinions are my own.
The overall premise of this book is that a picture of Maya and Theo starts a rumor that they’re dating, so they agree to fake date and keep up the facade. The problem is, that theme is very weak throughout the book. The romance is very sweet. The miscommunication trope is not annoying. The consent/bedroom communication is perfect. The basketball knowledge is evident. Overall, a very cute romance! The only odd part was how the back of the book implied the picture was more important, and the fake dating would be a bigger factor than it actually was.
—— •Spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ Contains two “open door” scenes
As a member of the LGBTQIA+ community, I absolutely love seeing representation available in books. I know that plenty of them exist, but this one was just so cute.
When our FMCs met, the sparks were immediate. But this story was definitely a sloooooooooow burn. I didn’t mind it though, it made the story that much sweeter.
Theo was incredibly sweet and kind. She didn’t ever change who she was despite all the things happening in her life. She remained (mostly) humble and respectful to everyone. I love that the author decided to make her that way. Also, her relationship with her parents as a college student made me so happy.
Maya was really sweet, but she definitely needed some communication skills. A lot of her issues came from not speaking her mind and clearing the air. But she really was such a good addition to the story. I couldn’t wait to see what happened.
I’m secretly hoping for some books about Iris, GJ, Mags, Gemma, Ellie, and even Cam in the future.
My only complaint was a few grammatical errors, but I’m pretty sure those have been fixed already and won’t be an issue. 5/5
cutie sports romance! there was a good balance of in-game content in addition to the romance plot which is what I always hope for. it was a little Caitlin Clark/Paige Bueckers-coded but I was not complaining!! it had a realistic conflict and a very minimal third act breakup. very sweet, refreshing, and nothing major to complain about!!
disclaimer: it took me so long to read because I am a teacher in America and it’s so hard to focus on anything right now!!
Okay so I was DESPERATE to read this after seeing it all over Bookstagram so when I got an ARC of Tip In, I was absolutely buzzing!
The characters are so full of depth and heart that Josie Mae made it impossible not to fall in love with each of them as individuals and as a pairing. I was BEGGING them both to stop being daft and fall in love from pretty much their first meeting. I was HOOKED.
I love a book that makes you feel so fully immersed in the world and that is exactly what Tip In did for me. I LOVE a good sapphic sports romance and boy did this deliver!
I will not stop thinking about Maya and Theo for a long time, I just know it!
