Blood Duet #2

Defied: Blood Duet, Book 2

Rate this book
I am both a sinner and a saint, but I bleed vengeance.

For years, I’ve lived in the grey… until her.

Avery Washington didn’t belong in the shadows, but I dragged her into the darkness anyway.

One kiss, and I would stop at nothing to possess her.

One caress, and my need to destroy wavered.

Our attraction was poison and pleasure.

They say the devil recognizes his own, but I never saw Avery coming. She's determined to light the matchsticks, and I can't resist going down in flames...

Defied is the final book in the Blood Duet and should not be listened to before Sworn.

description~WRITING - PLOT - PACE~
I have to say in all honesty, this turned out to be an amazingly good duet. Book two picks up right after the epic cliffhanger of book one, and both our main characters are reeling from the shocking revelations. What follows is a fantastically well written and well-paced conclusion to their story. The plot was super engaging and kept me turning the pages. There are twists and turns galore. Who is good? Who is bad? Who should you trust? So many secrets and lies will come out it will leave your head spinning! Last, it was all wrapped up in a very sweet and satisfying ending.

~HERO~
LINCOLN...I loved Lincoln in book one and I continued to love him in this book. He remained sexy as f-ck. He was a bit less of an a$$hole in this one. He was sweet. He was alpha, and he remained all about Avery.

~HEROINE~
AVERY...Like Linc, I loved Avery in book one and I loved her even more in this book. She remained feisty. She was sweet. She was funny. She was a bit of a bada$$ herself, and she fully embraced Linc and all his demons and scars.

description

~SECONDARY CHARACTERS~
There were quite a few secondary characters in this one mostly in the form of baddies and a few surprise allies. I still really liked Avery's roommate Katie as well. Although we don't really see her too much in this one.

~HEAT LEVEL~
Mediumish I guess. I was kind of expecting a bit more in the sex (and kink) department, but we got a handful of very sexy scenes and the frequency felt organic to the story. I adored this couple and thought they have fantastic on page chemistry as well.

~ANGST LEVEL - SEXUAL HISTORIES~
Pretty low all things considered. This couple has a bit of a rough patch to start, but they are pretty solid through the entirety of the book. Neither were virgins (Avery having lost hers in the previous book). There was no OW or OM drama either.

~IN THE END~
I loved both books in this series. They were both pretty much perfect, and that is saying something since I have been a nitpicky pain in the a$$ recently (lol). It was a well written duet. It was fast paced. The plot was engaging and full of twists and turns. I LOVED the setting on New Orleans. The sex was smokin' hot. The characters both main and secondary were well developed and intriguing. This will be especially popular with those who love their books on the "safe" side. There really isn't much left for me to say. Yours truly highly recommends it, so go forth and enjoy!description

ARC BOOK REVIEW
Release Date-31/5/18

I Was so looking forward to diving into the second book in the Blood Duet series and Defied (Blood Duet #2) certainly didn't disappoint; this started exactly where we left off in Sworn and almost immediately we are thrown right back into the thick of things.
"Defied" was action packed throughout and I so enjoyed reconnecting with both Avery and Lincoln.
In this second volume, we finally get the answers we have been waiting for and I felt that we finally got to fully bond and empathise much more with both Avery and Lincoln.
Finally comprehending the reasonings behind there outward personas and life choices.
In return, this made me feel so much more connected to our leading couple; I was so invested in the final outcome for these two.
This was really easy to get lost in and "Defied" managed to absorb me fully almost from the beginning.
Its told in dual POV and also has some interesting and also some very unsavoury individuals.
In Defied I was sucked right into the colourful ambience of what was ultimately the dark belly of New Orleans.
I adored the dynamic between Avery and Lincoln very much and thought that together they made a fantastic pair.
Their broken pieces just fit together so beautifully and when these two stopped fighting there feelings the outcome for both was fantastic and addictive reading.
This also had just the right balance of action versus sexy times and the emotion here was incredibly believable; I actually wanted these two to pull through the shitstorm ahead.
And most important of all they were both so very likeable; totally the cherry here for me.
"Defied" at its heart was well written and a truly positive experience for me.
Thank You to the Author for providing me with an ARC of "Defied (Blood Duet #2)" of which I have reviewed voluntary.
All opinions expressed are entirely my own.

What a cluster fuck of revelations...

Maybe a bit too messy and therefore a bit overboard with incoherence...and I m willing to overlook it😉

Cause, all in all, this author and this story turned out to be a revelation for me, filled with a lot of captivating action, thrilling pulsating tempo and a well deserved HEA for h and H, for all they were put through, lived through...so they could have a second chance at everything

Fantastically written, gritty, dark-ish love in the realm of power and greed that came out stronger than ever...

🎧🎧AUDIOBOOK REVIEW🎧🎧

It pains me to type this, but Defied did not meet the expectation that Sworn set up for it. Sworn was all about building the story to something, that something being the events in Defied, but it missed the mark in my opinion, and it was a huge disappointment for me. AND I HATE THAT IT WAS!!

There is more than just Lincoln & Avery to keep track of with this story. Along with their personal journey, there’s their individual journeys. That being said, in my opinion, there are a few other “main” characters we as readers have to get acquainted with as the story builds. My interpretation on the storyline puts the romance of Avery & Lincoln second to that of the “suspense/mystery” behind Avery & Lincoln both. I cannot tell you how long it has taken me to come up with that wording! LOL AND, because it took me forever and a day to even figure out how to word what I just did, and since this story has been out in the world for enough time, I’m not going to worry about spoiling anything by just saying what needs to be said moving forward!

✔️ Someone please explain to me the point of the “gunpoint kidnapping” that gave us the cliffhanger to Sworn? Wait, no, I get it, we got a lot of information from it and what shenanigans lay ahead, but the whole scene was so badly executed. You take 2 chapters were Lincoln is beaten and intimidated just to have Lincoln basically turn the tables at a snap and while a gun is trained on him, he overcomes everyone by just speaking???????? Was there no other way? Because as a reader, I gotta tell ya, dramatics for dramatics’ sake is the quickest way to ensure a story will not be finished. And this story came really close. *shrug*

✔️ If I have to download the ebook while listening to the audiobook because the author keeps going back and forth from first name to last name with key characters, my listening experience is not going to be that great. Because this happened constantly, I couldn’t be in the story like I should have been. This leg of the duet was all about solving the “mystery” and “corruption” in the storyline of Lincoln & Avery. Their relationship was established in Sworn as far as I was concerned. Sure, it still needed to be fleshed out, but again, it wasn’t what drove this leg of the story. At least, that’s my opinion and interpretation. So, who are these key players? Jay Foley (Mayor of New Orleans / Biological father to Lincoln / Stepfather to Avery), Joshua Hampton (President of Pershing University and the man responsible for the cliffhanger in Sworn and a bunch of other shenanigans), and last but not least we have Jason Ambideaux (Warlord of the underbelly of New Orleans, maybe?? I don’t really know what to call him lol). All three are key characters surrounding this storyline and all three were referred by first or last or both names at intermittent times throughout the story. Also, not to add to this discombobulation, but they were also referred to as their “roles” throughout the story at intermittent times. LISTEN, when you have a “who done it” like this one, please just refer to each character the same way and maybe don’t name three key players Jay, Jason & Joshua. Was there no other letter in the alphabet to use? All three were all up in this story and I just was blinking like a lunatic.

On a more positive note, if I overlook those two issues, and by overlook, I mean pretend they were written differently, this story is a really great romantic journey with a huge side of suspense, all cloaked in an air destiny and fate. I like the way the author connected all the characters with “seven degrees of separation” and connected all the different plot-points in a tangled web within those degrees. It was fascinating but also hard to follow because of the reasons I already gave. I’m not sure that I would have had as much difficulty if I’d have been reading rather than listening to this leg of the story. But I wasn’t so it is what it is.

🎧NARRATION ⇒ Stella Hunter & JF Hunter performed an outstanding duet narration from the very beginning. I mentioned this in my review of Sworn, but it bares repeating. A duet narration is no easy feat and these two put on a performance that was flawless. I have no idea if they narrated in one studio or separate, and I can tell you that not being able to notice that is high praise in my opinion.

After the cliffhanger of the first book left me hanging with, I was really glad I could jump into Defied right away.

It starts right were Sworn ended and the suspense built up in there continues with a steady rise. This second part of the duet is filled with more action an the first book and continues to build the relationship between Avery and Lincoln.
Defied is more passionate and emotionally charged than Sworn and has some twist and turns that I did not see coming. Also Avery and Lincoln really grew on my by the end of the duet, which was something I did not expect when I started Sworn.

Defied is a well written conclusion to this duet that I really enjoyed reading.

5 "Thor's Hammer" Stars. This was the EPIC conclusion to the Blood Duet. I enjoyed every single page.

I can't tell you much because I do not want to give anything away. But this book has more twists and turns that Sam Hunt's Body Like a Back Road song!! It was amazing!!!

Defied picks up exactly where Sworn left us, with a gun pointed at Avery and Lincoln and one hell of a bombshell dropped in our laps. It wasn't the first, and it sure wasn't the last!

I loved Avery, she was a kick ass female lead character. Not a weak bone in her body. She did not annoy me at all. And that almost never happens!

" You found me in the shadows, Sergeant, when I was afraid, and you brought me back to the world of the living." - Avery

Lincoln Asher was the best kind of a Alpha Male. Broody, mean, and an asshole. But what is more perfect than that? He wasn't prefect, playboy good looks and all the ladies love him long time, no, he had scars and those scars just made me love him so much more!

" You're not looking for a savior, but I fucking hope you might be looking for a guy like me.... the kind of guy who loves you, even if he knows he'll spend the rest of his life trying to be worthy of a brave girl like you." - Lincoln

Panties incinerated. Game over. Be still my heart.

WHEW. I needed to take a deep breath after that ride! Lincoln and Avery opened themselves up to each other in the dire of circumstances. And the payoff was amazing. I really loved this story, but I did have a hard time keeping the "badies" straight in my mind. I had to stop a few times and go over things internally to make sure I was thinking of the correct person. I would still highly recommend this duet.

Defied is the second book in Maria Luis' Blood Duet. IF YOU HAVEN'T READ SWORN, STOP NOW AND GO READ IT. This is NOT a standalone book. So if you are the type of reader where you HATE cliffhangers, the Blood Duet is now complete!! NO MORE WAITING!!

Defied begins right where Sworn ended. We are on a journey of greed, corruption, revenge and redemption with our two main characters, Lincoln and Avery. Defied still held the same action-packed pace as Sworn but cleared up all remaining questions of events and everyone's motives.

Rating: 4.5 out of 5

Again what a roller coaster ride. I haven't felt a hangover like this in a while. Maria brings you right into the middle of these peoples lives and drops you in. Love it!

Now we know more about what is going on with Avery and Lincoln. We have their past and some of what they want for their future. But man we have no idea the depths these bad people will go to get what they want. And what they want is the city of New Orleans.
Avery and Lincoln need each other and whatever friends they still have at the end of this to come out alive. But what secrets will they find and what secrets might tear them apart?

I loved this duet and I will be reading more of Maria's books. I am a big fan now.

This book picks up right where Sworn left off, with what I thought was the shocker of all shockers, until I continued reading. (What the ever-lovin' freak, Maria Luis?!!) Silly me, there were a TON more shockers in store, and things I never saw coming! I’m usually fairly good at ciphering things out, so kudos to the author for a wild, unanticipated, exciting, fascinating ride with this duet.

In order to avoid any spoilers, I’ll somewhat recycle my brief synopsis from the first book, Sworn. Avery Washington has been on her own since her early teens. She reads tarot cards for a living, hiding in plain sight, knowing her life depends on staying off the radar of powerful, influential people in the city. She has virtually no personal attachments, until she meets police sergeant, Lincoln Asher. Something in each calls to the other, but their mutual attraction threatens to unravel some dangerous secrets that could destroy them both.

By the time Defied begins, Avery and Lincoln have gotten a bit entwined in each others' lives, and wow, oh wow, have things ever gone off the rails! And I’m not talking about the sexy times. That’s just a small part of this enormously complex, tangled, elaborate story. I honestly couldn’t begin to guess how things would work out, but I was on the edge of my seat through the whole book. This story completely blew my mind. From the unique, fresh, damaged characters to the fluid storyline that defines “unpredictable,“ the Blood Duet showcases this author's phenomenal talent in bringing us an unexpected, distinctive, exceptional must read.

Holy Bleep! What an ending to this amazing duet! I am so glad I didn’t have to wait so long between books, that was really great because it meant I was still riding the high from the first novel. This book had me sitting on the edge of my seat with anticipation, I didn’t want to stop reading. I absolutely love Lincoln and Avery!

The characters of this book had so many layers. They were were all written so well. Swoon worthy Lincoln is just amazing. So broken, and yet such a sweet amazing man who would step in front of a bullet if that meant the one he loves lives. How can you not swoon over that?! After a rough life he finally sees the light in a world full of darkness. It was beautiful!
Avery evolved so much in this final book. Her character finally stood up for herself and stepped up to the darkness. No more hiding, no more regrets. She is a wonderful heroine and she made me tear up a bit during and after her argument with Katie.

I really didn’t want to put this book down, I truely loved every single minute of this duet. The twist and turns this book took had me totally surprised. It really kept me on the edge of my seat, it was such an exciting and exhilarating read. There is so much emotion in this book, so much tension, so much heartbreaking revelations. I wait with bated breath for the next book released by this amazing lady! It could be a phone book for New Orleans and I would be beyond excited to read it. Grab your copies of the Blood Duet, you seriously will not regret your decision!

ALC AUDIOBOOK REVIEW:

Narrated By:
@stellahunternarrator and @j.f.harding

Wow! What an exciting end to this duet. I knew I loved the mystery and cliff hanger of the 1st book but the suspense, action and love story in Defied Book 2, held me captive the entire time. I was hooked and LOVED every single second. First of all the narrators, Stella Hunter and JF Harding were amazing throughout this entire duet (Book 1 • Sworn & Book 2 • Defied), narrating in duet they had me reeling with the action of what was going to happen next. They were able to both put so many emotions behind getting Avery and Lincoln’s truths out. Truths about why they live the lives they do, truths about their past’s, truths on how their future looks so different now and the most dramatic part of it all were all the truths behind the family secrets and JF & Stella gave me chills bringing all of this to light with their voices. I fell hard for Lincoln and Avery and continued to root for their HEA and for the tough life they have lived, they deserved that. Defied is book 2 in the Blood Duet and should only be read after book 1, Sworn. This book is a darkish suspenseful romance with Avery and Lincoln who are broken and with all of the horrible things they have been through it has brought these two together fighting for those that have wronged them, and for justice.

Thank You @wildfiremarketingsolutions and Maria Luis for the opportunity to listen and review both books.

✨Audio Review✨
Defied by Maria Luis was one dark, wild, and steamy conclusion that had me on the edge of my seat with every new truth and secret being revealed. I couldn’t get enough of Avery and Lincoln’s twisted love story, and had to keep listening till these two finally found their long overdue HEA!

Stella Hunter and J.F. Harding performed this audiobook in duet style narration, and these two were absolutely mesmerizing as Avery and Lincoln. Stella’s alluring voice captured Avery’s passionate and determined persona as she dealt with more and more new information about her past and her growing desire and love for Lincoln. J.F.added the perfect touch of protective dominance to his voice to showcase Lincoln’s devotion and adoration for Avery while dealing with new truths about his past as well. The connection between these two drew even deeper in this book and both narrators brought the heat.

Overall, I enjoyed this book. If you are a fan of a dark, suspenseful romance with a hot protective cop, a brave sassy tarot card reader, truths about the past, danger, family secrets, real identities, on the run, nightlife in New Orleans, dirty politicians, love declarations, steamy times, a jaw dropping climax, and a HEA that will steal your heart, then you will love the end of Avery and Lincoln’s romance. I always look forward to more from Maria Luis.

3,5 stars, sits firmly in the “good but forgettable” category. Reviewing the duology as a whole.

This duology was good and interesting enough, but nothing particularly mind-blowing. I honestly found myself wondering why it was split into two books at all. The story would likely have worked better as a single, more streamlined novel.

The characters felt just a bit basic. The male main character had some intriguing aspects, while the female lead was just okay. The whole “virgin” element, though, just didn’t work for me.. Maybe someone likes it (??), but I don’t see it as hot, and then suddenly she didn’t even seem like a virgin at all. It added nothing, so I don’t see the point.

There were things I genuinely enjoyed, though: the romance between the characters was great, and I loved the New Orleans setting and the mysterious vibes.

By the second book, my interest started to dip. I got a little bored, and the ending left me a little confused, though that might be on me.

Overall, the duology wasn’t bad in any particular way, but it also didn’t give me much to rave about.

While there was definitely more going on in this book, there were too many reveals because there was constantly new/different information, with the main characters having big reactions. Also, Avery’s attitude about Lincoln killing people was annoying, especially when every now and then, between those reactions to Lincoln, she would talk about wanting to kill Jay.

This book carried on from the previous one and while there was some action, it felt like most things were happening to the main characters, instead of them being proactive. Also, I really didn’t like how Avery and Lincoln talked about some secrets, but then continued to act on their own.

I think I liked Avery slightly less because of her horrified reactions to Lincoln being violent (and yet she still talked about killing Jay). Lincoln was fine, but his character didn’t really stand out. I did really like Lincoln’s speech at the beginning when Avery is judging him for being a murderer. I liked Katie in the previous book, but in this one

This book was fine, but there were a lot of reveals that felt like they were trying to one up each other and forced reactions out of Lincoln and Avery.

Defied begins right where Sworn left off (massive cliffhanger anyone)

Now I am not going to tell you what happens because I'm not about spoilers, you just have to read it for yourself!

I can say that you better have a strong heart because it's definitely going to get a work out with it beating so fast with excitement and anticipation!
The whole time I was reading this I thought I knew what was happening then something would happen and I was like woah nope not what I was expecting! I was kept on the edge of my seat needing to know what happened next. I loved it!

Now we know that this is not a romcom but still Maria has brilliantly placed hilariousness that had me laughing out loud but did not take away from the story.

I loved every single second of this book! I can not wait to see what Maria does next!

Defied is book 2 of the Blood Duet series and you will need to read Book 1, Sworn first. Sworn was an intense and amazing book that ended in a cliffhanger. I was on pins and needles waiting for Defied to come out. Once I started reading it, I could not stop until I finished. It was so intense and compelling that I was stressed reading it. The characters, Avery and Lincoln were amazing and there were non stop twists and turns.
I have never read any book that compares to this series. Maria Luis is such a talented writer. I have read and enjoyed every book she has written.

Defied is the 2nd installment of the Blood Duet.
Defied picks up right where we were left in Sworn. Wow just wow this book, actually this duet is fantastic. It keeps you guessing, the plot twists that are thrown at us left me reeling. Nothing is what is seems, there's no way of guessing what's going to happen next, you think you've got it all worked out then BOOM another twist!
The chemistry between Lincoln and Avery is off the charts. These two broken, jaded souls are perfect for each other. Their journey is a rough one, so many bumps along the way, but in the end true love wins.
This duet is a must read. I highly recommend it

The sinner and the saint. Who is who when not is all that it seems to be...

The conclusion to Avery and Lincoln's book is here! These two go through it to get their happy ending, but it is totally worth it.

Maria Luis brings us on a journey stock full of twists and turns that I definitely did not expect, but that made it such a better ride than if I would have guessed.

I can't say too much as to not spoil it, but definitely read the first book in the duet and then dive right into this!

J.F. Harding and Stella Hunter did a great job continuing this duet and made me feel all the feels!

Well did this one end with a bang! Linc and Avery are thrown to the gators so to speak and they have to struggle their way out so they can both live and move on. There are some insane twists that happen in this one that leaves your jaw on the floor and going what just happened! This duet is gritty and raw and will take you on a crazy ride. I love how much these two fight for each other even though they are struggling to move past things that have been told or done to them.
Overall, if you want something down and dirty, snag up this duet. You will love how Luis weaves her words and creates a dirty underground world of NOLA

This book is the ending of Sworn, it was a cliff hanger. The characters are Avery and Lincoln. Maria became known because, of her RomCom that she started publishing a year ago April. Sworn & Defied were her first two Mystery -Suspense- and Romance books. The series is the Blood Duet 1 & 2. Both Avery & Lincoln come from bad backgrounds but, she is softer & he is rough with tattoos all over his chest. I would recommend this for someone who likes that type of story as Maria is a good Author!
I voluntarily read and reviewed honestly an Advanced Reader Copy of this book.

Defied (Blood Duet #2) by Maria Luis is a dark, contemporary romance told in first person, dual POV. It follows the relationship between tarot reader and runaway, Avery Washington, and NOPD police sergeant, Lincoln Asher. It's a gritty tale of two characters with very dark pasts, and many secrets. As part two of a duet, it picks up where the previous book ended and concludes the story.

This book was as much of a page-turner as the first. We get to know both characters better and get a deeper look into Lincon's past. We also find out more about Avery's mother's death. The story was full of suspense, danger, corruption, twists and turns. All secrets are revealed, betrayals are exposed, and all conflicts carried over from book one are resolved by the end. I enjoyed it.

Well this was a bit of a shitshow. Too many things happening at once, very convenient solutions to everything, explanations and revelations that barely made sense, and Lincoln suddenly turning into a sap.. nope, I definitely liked Sworn a lot better!

this was good- a little slow at times. but it was dark and sexy & i loved avery and lincoln & the new orleans set-up. the writing I LOVED and the extended ending was a nice touch.wish the epilogue was extended but it was cute.

THAT'S how you do romantic suspense! I am going to be in a serious book hangover now after reading this. It had so much suspense, great sexy times, enemies to lovers vibe and twists and turns. This is my first time reading this author and now I need more from her. So, so, so good!
