Madison hesitates before hitching her pink tulle prom dress and running as fast as she can into the wilderness. The ripped edge of her skirt snags on a tree root and she falls to the forest floor. As she catches her breath, she hears the unmistakable sound of heavy boots closing in on her. He knows where she is…
When news of a missing limousine reaches Sheriff Jenna Alton and her deputy, David Kane, they fear for the lives of the ten teenagers who were inside and should have been enjoying their prom night. After picking up each passenger from their home, instead of heading to prom, the car turned toward the darkness of the forest around Black Rock Falls. Has there been a tragic accident, or has something more sinister happened to the teenagers?
Hours later, Jenna’s team discovers the bodies of the five boys from the car, and her heart shatters when she realizes the girls are still missing. The killer has taken them, and he hasn’t left a single trace.
Jenna knows time is running out for the teenagers when a lifeless body is discovered hanging from the branches of a tree, and another is found laying on a boulder nearby, still wearing her prom dress. Taking in the scene, she spots something that makes her pulse race – the girls’ bodies have been displayed just like on a previous murder case she worked. Could there be a copycat killer on the loose?
With three young girls unaccounted for, Jenna’s team works around the clock in the dense woodland looking for clues before they find themselves under attack as well. Jenna knows one thing for sure—the murderer wants to take as many lives as possible. As she reads the notes on her past case, her heart races with worry about what kind of monster she is about to face. Has Jenna finally met her match? And will the missing girls ever come home?
Fans of Lisa Regan, Melinda Leigh and Kendra Elliot will absolutely devour this gripping and unputdownable crime thriller from USA Today and Wall Street Journal bestselling author D.K. Hood.

What readers are saying about D.K.
“A cracking page-turner with some omg moments that will keep you reading late into the night.
Crack That is the sound of D.K. Hood hitting out of the ballpark yet again with Good Girls Don't Cry: A completely gripping and totally addictive serial killer thriller!!!! I could not put this book down! From the very first page I was fully invested and glued to my seat while completely gripped by this shocking page turner! This book packs a punch and takes readers on a roller coaster ride of emotions throughout the book and I loved every second of it!
It's prom night and the teens are dressed to impress and ready to party. It was supposed to be a night to remember but the night turns into a horrific nightmare. When their limousine fails to take the teen couples to prom, married couple, Sheriff Jenna Alton and her deputy, David Kane, are called to investigate. They come across a grim scene when the limousine and 5 bodies are found. The females are missing, and the killer left no clues behind.
Jenna is working against time in more ways than one in this book. She is pregnant and near her due date and the clock is ticking as every second counts in missing person cases. Could this be the work of a copycat killer? This case has strong similarities to another case she worked. Who is the sinister and evil person responsible for the deaths and missing girls? Will Jenna, Kane, and the other law professionals solve this case in time to save the missing girls???????
This book was dripping with dread, danger, tension, anxiety, and atmosphere. Whew! This book kept me on my toes and turning those pages. I felt for the victims and the officers tasked with finding any survivors. The side/supporting characters are fantastic and always contribute to the plot and investigations. I love both Jenna and Kane and enjoying how D.K. Hood also showcases the3ir home life with their son Tauri. This provides a well-rounded view of the characters, their personalities, and their sense of community/found family withe those close to them.
D.K. Hood did a tremendous job of creating a diabolical evil character and her vivid descriptions had me feeling as if I was right there during the action as a silent observer. She really put me through a ringer of emotions while reading this book. D.K. Hood has the knack for creating a sense of urgency in readers as her characters search for clues and conduct their investigations. As with the other books in this series, there is great character development, intriguing investigations, and brilliant investigative work. I am already chomping at the bit, with my fingers crossed that I won't have to wait too long for the next book in this brilliant and gripping series to come out.
Wonderfully written, well thought out, perfectly paced and hard to put down! If you have not read this series, you are missing out. On the bright side, most of the books in this fabulous series (such as this one), can be read a stand-alone novel.
*a Buddy read with Bec. Please read her review as well to get her thoughts on Good Girls Don't Cry!
Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All the thoughts and opinions are my own.
RTC. Go check out the lovely Debra's review in the meantime :)
Updated: such a good series! every book really draws me in quickly and this one was no different in that respect. It was, however, sooo creepy and I guess scary? Such incredible writing from Hood to give that experience. The plot was fantastic (as always) and done really well with multiple POVs. Highly recommend. Thanks to Debra for another fab buddy read.
Thanks to the author, NetGalley and Bookouture for the advanced copy in exchange for my honest review.
I have been reading this series since the very beginning, and 26 books later I am still loving it. There is always some much happening in Black Rock Falls, so many serial killers to be stopped. This one is a real piece of work. Again, a fantastic addition to the series and ending on a happy note. As always, already looking forward to the next one.
It all begins when a limousine full of high school students on their way to prom goes missing. It is pretty messed up and Jenna cannot help herself but get involved, even though she should be resting in preparation for her baby’s birth. We all know that women cannot be told. It is dark and suspenseful, a genuine page turner.
Thanks so much to Bookouture for my advanced copy to read. Publishes on June 24th.
** D.K. Hood returns with another strong novel in this captivating series. The story is exciting from the first scene and does not dissipate throughout. When a group of teens disappear on their prom night, Sheriff Jenna Alton and her team begin an eerie investigation. What they discover is something gruesome, with a serial killer who tries to play copycat, but adds their own spin to things. With little time to waste, Alton, her deputy, Dave Kane, and the others rush for answers so that the remaining victims are not added to a macabre list to be crossed off. Hood delivers something well worth the series fan's time.
It began with the call of a missing limousine. Sheriff Jenna Alton and her deputy, Dave Kane, are sent to the scene, where they cannot find anything, including the ten teens who were out on their prom night. Each teen was collected from their respective home, but never made it to the party. Instead, it would appear that the limousine headed into the darkness of the forested area around Black Rock Falls. Was this an accident or could something more terrifying have taken place to this group?
It is only a few hours later that all five boys are found dead, their bodies obviously attacked. However, as Sheriff Alton tries to piece things together, she worries that none of the girls are to be found. This crime just got more troubling and the kidnapper/killer may have a sick plan for the remaining victims. There are no clues or traces of anyone, Alton, Kane, and the rest of the team scouring the area for anything that might help.
There is a break in the case when two of the girls are found murdered in the forested area. The placement of the bodies remind Sheriff Alton of past killers she has arrested. She is left to wonder if this is a copycat killer or someone who wants to pay homage to past criminals. With three girls not yet accounted for, everyone is on pins and needles, seeking answers before despair sets in. A few potential suspects end up being dead-ends, forcing Sheriff Alton to take her time and really explore the scenes, hoping that she missed something before. It will take determination and swiftness to bring these girls home, alive and in one piece. D.K. Hood dazzles with the latest novel in the series that has all the elements of a strong police procedural.
This series has kept my attention since I discovered it a few years back. Working with the premise of a small-town police force, Hood is able to develop such a strong series, though many will wonder how such a small community to harbour so many killers. Black Rock Falls has grown and proven to be a great locale throughout the series. The narrative opens with a great deal of mystery, while never losing its direction as Hood lays the groundwork for much distress. The story picks up the pace as the reader follows all the revelations, keeping the reader hooked as they push forward to find solutions. Characters emerge and find their own footing as things progress. Central players, Jenna Alton and Dave Kane, have proven to be highly influential within the series, showing their development with each passing book. There is little time to wonder, as plot points prove highly important and the reader must focus on all that occurs, with surprises and twists no one could have expected. D.K Hood has done well with this series and I cannot wait to see where they might be headed next.
Kudos, Madam Hood, for a chilling latest book in the collection!
Good Girls Don't Cry is one of the most stressful books in the Kane and Alton series by D.K. Hood. Sheriff Jenna Alton is 9 months pregnant and expecting her first child with Deputy David Kane. They have an adopted son, Tauri, who is their everything and he's looking forward to having a sibling. It's prom night in Black Creek Falls and 10 teenagers have gotten into a white limousine that their parents rented for them. There are 5 boys and 5 girls, including the prom queen and king. As they're on their way to the prom, the kids aren't paying any attention to the route. They're to busy celebrating and enjoying each other. One of the girls hears something and takes a peek through a crack. She sees the driver window covered with what looks like blood. When she gets her dates attention, he looks through a different crack and sees the dead body of their original driver. When they look out the windows they notice that they're far from town and headed away from the direction they should be going.
The limo is headed over rough terrain and the kids are bounced around in the back. They're in the woods and a limo is not meant to be driven on these rough roads. All of a sudden the limo comes to a stop and the driver gets out. He's wearing a mask and opens the back door. He tells the boys to get out of the limo and lay face down on the ground with their hands behind them. When one of the boys disagrees, the man shoots and kills him. The other kids are horrified and panicked now. The remaining boys get on the ground and the girls are given the task of zip tying their hands and feet. Then the boys get back into the limo as the girls lay face down and get zip tied the same way. The girls are walked to a van that is parked just ahead. Once inside they watch the driver start the limo, get out, hit the gas pedal, and lock the doors. The limo goes over the cliff into the river below. The boys have no chance of escaping with their hands and feet zip tied. The girls are screaming and so upset that their boyfriends are going to die.
As Jenna gets the call about the missing limo and the 10 kids she's on high alert calling on her team to come in early. They need to get a helicopter in the air, but the conditions won't allow it until daybreak. The parents called when their children never made it to prom and never came home. Who would want to terrorize and kill high school kids heading to prom? The bodies of the boys are discovered later, but there's no sign of the 5 girls. Where could they be? When divers are called in to bring up the bodies in the limo, they now know that this was no accident. The boys are zip tied and one has been shot. Jenna now knows that they have to move quickly or they could have 5 more dead teenagers on their hands. When hikers call in that they've seen a girl's body hanging in a tree, Jenna and her team react quickly. The girl is still wearing her prom dress and is dead. Another girl in her prom dress is discovered dead draped across a boulder. Both of these scenes are reenactments of a previous murder case Jenna worked.
Jenna and her team have 3 girls to save and get to work. They search the wooded area, look at the previous case, and try to find any clues as to where the girls might be. Will Jenna be able to find the girls before they are displayed? Will Jenna be safe looking for this killer? As Jenna goes with Dave out in the woods to crime scenes, will she give birth in a remote area? When one of her deputies is injured while investigating one of the crime scenes the case goes to a more dangerous level. This killer has skills that go beyond hurting teenagers and will be tough to find without ending up injured or dead. Good Girls Don't Cry will have your heart racing, as you worry about Jenna and the baby she's carrying, the missing girls, and the hunt for the killer. I rate Good Girls Don't Cry 5 stars as it is one of the best in the series so far! Good Girls Don't Cry is out on June 24 and should not be missed if you love a good thriller! I can't wait for the next Kane and Alton book, so I hope D.K. Hood is writing! I'd like to thank NetGalley and Bookouture for an advanced copy of Good Girls Don't Cry in exchange for a fair review. #GoodGirlsDontCry
This was dark and terrifying, and when you hear the title in the book being referenced, that was so bloody chilling!!
The entire premise is intense because as soon as the limo goes missing, and people then turn up. Jenna is heavily pregnant, and you just feel like a clock is ticking. I think the scariest moment for me was Rowley walking down the street, and the ripples from the Quake started!!
I did feel that there was no urgency from the team when Raven and Emily were stuck up in the woods, and there was a sniper on the loose. I mean, normally, Wolf would go up the mountains no matter what, but it felt to me the team didn't try hard enough.
However, we are book 26 and we are still being surprised, and the clanger at the end of the book with Dave....I mean what the hell!!!!! I need to know the story NOW!! Plus, who doesn't love a reference to the Tarot card killer - I hope we have more of that soon!!
I listened to the audiobook in one go, as I needed to know how it would end, the reason behind it, and if everyone would make it out alive!!!!! Another great instalment to the series.
This is already part 26 of the series, and I simply can’t get enough of it. All the characters are interesting, and you immediately take them into your heart. Since the beginning of the series, a number of characters have been added, and I’ve never once feared that it would diminish the quality of the books. Each one remains fantastic, and the collaboration is top-notch.
Just as the ominous phone calls come into the police station, Jenna and Dave are enjoying a well-deserved day off—but our dynamic duo wouldn’t be our dynamic duo if they left everything to the rest of the team. They spring into action, because Jenna is the kind of person who believes that, as sheriff, she is responsible for the safety of the residents. And for her, that means experiencing everything up close.
The killer in this story "treats" them to a glimpse of the past and brings it back to life. The author makes a brilliant move here. She also allows loyal readers to recall memories, and the way she describes the crime scenes leaves nothing to the imagination. She portrays the perpetrator in all his gruesome facets, and you can’t help but hope they catch this person and put them behind bars as soon as possible.
But alongside these murders, there’s also room for a truly beautiful moment.
Five stars just don’t feel like enough. That’s why I’m giving the whole night sky full of stars.
I received an ARC from netgalley. I love Kane and Alton and all the characters. This storyline had me wondering the entire time of who done it. Sometimes you can read and just know who the killer is. D.K Hood is not one of those authors and I love it. Keeps you wanting to turn the page to keep reading. And that last sentence?! I can't wait for the next book!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review "Good Girls Don't Cry", book 26 in the Detectives Kane and Alton series by D. K, Hood. This is the 26th book in the series that I have read and reviewed. I know these characters inside out, and it's always a treat to visit with them again (but I wouldn't want to live there, no-siree, not in Serial Killer Central - not in Summer, not in Winter (and Spring and Fall have their share of menace, too). But I digress. Jenna and Dave are in the last weeks of her pregnancy, and hoping for a quiet time before their new baby arrives. Fat chance! Do you even know where you live? When a limousine of teens bound for their prom is hijacked, nobody actually realizes what has happened until none of the teens return the next day. And the hunt is on. It doesn't take long before the limo is found, in a lake, with bodies still trapped inside. The boys are dead (and so is the driver), but where are the girls? And then the bodies start appearing, seeming copycats of previous Kane/Alton cases, but with one notable addition - "Not Mine". It appears that there's a new monster in town, and it is up to the team to hunt him down and rescue those left alive. In true form, Jenna, Dave, Shane Wolfe, Emily Wolfe, Deputy Rowley, Chief Deputy Rio and part-time team member Rowley jump into action, not to mention peril, as they race to the finish line. And welcome the new addition. Can be read as a standalone (there's enough historical detail to bring you up to the present) but the whole series is worth the read.
Kane and Alton are back in another gripping instalment. With Jenna nearing her due date, her husband and colleague, Dave remain on high alert.
But when a call comes in about ten teenagers who never made it to prom and whose limo has disappeared, Jenna can't just sit back and do nothing. So she joins Dave and the rest of the team in launching a search. Soon, they find the limo in a ravine. However, when the driver is discovered nearby and it's clear he's been murdered, Jenna realises this situation is far more serious than a mere accident.
And as Kane and FBI Agent Carter venture into the ravine, Jenna's worst fears are confirmed: all five boys reported missing are dead, either drowned or shot, and the five girls they were with are nowhere to be found.
So what has happened to them?
Just as this question arises, body parts are discovered at the ski resort, leading the team to realise this killer is taunting them and they must act quickly if they hope to bring the remaining girls home alive.
However, this proves to be challenging, especially with Jenna on the verge of giving birth and a killer who delights in reminiscing about past crimes in gruesome detail.
And with twists and turns that kept me on the edge of my seat. This was a brilliant read and I love how the team is expanding as the series develops, and I can’t wait to see what Kane and Alton get up to next.
My thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for the opportunity to read an early copy of Good Girls Don't Cry. All thoughts expressed are my own. 😊
would like to thank netgalley and the publisher for letting me read this book
ohhh man this one isnt for the faint hearted ... its a hard read right from the first chapter and i have to admit it triggered a few times for me so much so that i had to put it down and breathe deeply
when a limo full of teenagers going to their prom never makes it jenna and her team go looking for them....
what they find will haunt them for the rest of their lives.....
the boys in the limo are all dead the girls are nowhere to be found
but when the first girl turns up dead mutilated and suffering a sexual assault with the message not mine carved into her jenna knows they have a really sick twisted psychopath on their hands
can they find the rest of the girls before its to late
✅Wow! This starts out with a real bang! Book 26 in the Detectives Kane and Alton series has Jenna at the end of her pregnancy while trying to solve the mysterious disappearance of teenagers heading to their Prom. Talk about sick individuals…this story has got to be up there in the gasp out loud level. It seems like Black Rock Falls is continuing to be a town that attracts killers. Are they ever going to catch a break???? I love catching up with Jenna, Kane, and their team. We didn’t see too much of their adopted son in this story. Each book in the series is suspenseful and intriguing. And….each story is definitely CREEPY! Where is the author going to take us next? Realistically speaking…..Black Rock Falls needs a break from all the murders going on!
Thank you NetGalley, Bookouture and the author for the opportunity to read this book for my honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.
Prom Night – the glitz, the glamour, the girlie get-ready-together, the limos with dates. The American high school dream. But this is Black Rock Falls!!
This is an ordeal the families will never forget. Prom night is a celebration and release of the year’s achievements but for ten families it’s a nightmare as their teens are kidnapped by a psycho! But it wouldn’t a simple case if it comes from D K Hood! She’s set her fictional Sheriff’s department tasks and a half with this one.
There is so much about this book I want to talk about but if you’re not up with the series, I don’t want to spoil it. Let’s just say, I felt the frustrations on of my favourite characters was going through, the limitations place on them trying to solve this tricky case.
The chapters with the missing teens were chilling. The kidnapper is just so unnerving with their fake friendliness. I’d be totally on edge and a subordinate if it was me – you’d want to live right and if it’s doing the bidding of a psychopath, you would!!
Another hard hitting case for D. K. Hood with, as I’ve come to expect, the non-work lives of my sheriff’s department interwoven to the narrative. Bring on book 27 – OMG how have we got to book 26?!?!?

In treading the other stories we know Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy David Kane are married and anxious for a family. However, with no luck with a pregnancy they adopt an adorable, smart four year old Native American, their now son Tauri. He is still smart and fills their life with so much joy! In this story we learn that he is going to have a sibling as Jenna is pregnant.
News of a missing white limousine reaches Sheriff Jenna Alton and her husband David Kane they fear for the lives of the ten teenagers as they should have been enjoying their prom night, . As the info comes in It appears after picking up the prom passenger from their home, instead of heading to prom, the limo turned toward the darkness of the forest around Black Rock Falls.

However the girls are showing up -a lifeless body is discovered hanging from the branches of a tree, then and another is found on a bolder wearing her prom gown. Jenna realizing something all too familiar – the girls’ bodies are being staged reminding her of a previous murder case. Could this be a copycat killer on the loose?
Jenna’s team works around the clock to find clues to lead them to the other three missing girls
Story is full of excitement!!
I have read several other D.K. Hood books and really enjoyed them. I read most of the Special Agent Beth Katz series and became a fan. However, I got on the Alton and Kane train late but totally enjoyed the few I have read. So here I am again. Pleased that I wasn’t all that lost by getting on board so late in this series. Yes! I am very much looking forward to 'Kane and Alton’ Book #27. In “A Letter from D.K. Hood” she tells us that Jenna and Kane will be back after their break – probably in time for Halloween which Ms. Hood states is her favorite time to write a story.
In her bio we learn that she always had a wicked sense of humor and was the kid who told the ghost stories around the campfire. Now enjoys writing crime, mystery and thrillers. With many stories, waiting for her to write she looks forward to sharing many spine-tingling stories with us!!
A Big Thank You to NetGalley and Bookouture for this early eGalley. Publishing Release Date scheduled for June 24, 2025.
Thank you Net Gallery and the publisher for sending me an Advanced Readers Copy.
Firstly, I must preface that I have not read any of the other books that belong to this series. Therefore, I did not have the connection to the characters and any expectations before reading this book.
The premise of detectives trying to solve the killings mirroring those of previous serial killers, is not an original concept. It is however a concept, that I do find entertaining. A story does not have to have a unique premise to be an enjoyable read. As long as the characters are fleshed out and multifaceted. Unfortunately regarding this particular book, I feel that the execution of the story and characters fell flat for me.
The story starts with a limo of young men and women on the way to attend their prom. There evening plans are swiftly interrupted, as they are taken hostage. I liked that the story immediately began with high stakes action. I unfortunately feel like the intensity of the story dwindled after the initial action.
I enjoyed the chapter’s that focused on the young women who had been captured. My favorite character was…and I became invested in her fight for survival. I would have appreciated more background information on her and the other women.
I did not find the police procedural chapters engaging. I felt that those chapters veered off into tangents (events), that I personally did not find interesting. It seemed to detract from the story and take away from the high stakes of the main plot.
Certain repetitive actions by characters, (such as Jenna pulling strands of hair from her face), became frustrating. I understand that creating idiosyncrasies in a character , can make them more, relatable and familiar to the reader. I found that the character lacked depth and the action acted more as a filler, to compensate for their lack of personality.
Although this book was not to my personal taste, I can understand why it appeals to others and why the series is popular.
There is always another vile killer in Black Rock Falls a/k/a Serial Killer Central. This one was especially disturbing because all of the victims are taken at once in the beginning, and then the frightening days and nights begin for these poor young girls.
Prom night should be a night a group of teenage girls and boys will never forget. Unfortunately, this night will not be forgotten not because of fun, but will be remembered as a night of terror for this community. The limousine that is transporting them to the prom disappears without a trace.
Sheriff Jenna Alton is very pregnant, but when she receives the call about the missing teens, she is determined to be a part of the investigation. Kane, Alton and company are the best of the best, but this killer is also very savvy. When the bodies start piling up, it becomes chillingly obvious someone is playing games with people's lives and getting his kicks doing it. This particular killer was especially evil and took great joy in making promises, that he has no intention of keeping, to a group of frightened teenage girls. I got chill bumps reading this book.
This is another winner in this fantastic series. The author continues to build the characters while showing them at work, but also giving us a glimpse into their personal lives. I feel as if I know these characters personally after reading so many of these books. I love a good serial killer thriller, but what I really enjoy about books written by this author is that they are clean. The plot is scary and disturbing, but she handles those scenes with finesse. I also like the pacing of these books. They are easy to read with short chapters without too much information. She just gets to the point. I highly recommend this book, this series and anything written by this author. If you enjoy mysteries, serial killer thrillers, as well as cat and mouse games, you will devour this book, just like I did.
Thank you to Bookouture and NetGalley for this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I’m so excited to share my thoughts on Good Girls Don’t Cry as part of the book tour hosted by Bookouture. My thanks to them for my stop on the tour, and to @Netgalley for a copy of the book in exchange for my honest review.
MY REVIEW
This book is the 26th in the Kane and Alton series and while it’s a perfectly good standalone thriller I firmly believe you would enhance your experience by reading the whole series, not only because they are brilliant thrillers, but for better context, backstory, and superb character development. I am a huge fan of D.K Hood and her Kane & Alton series among others. This time around finds Sheriff Jenna Alton heavily pregnant which might slow many women down, but does not stop her jumping into the investigation with both feet, even if the expectant father, and her deputy, David Kane is doing his best to keep her and their child safe.
I have always liked Jenna and David. Both instantly likeable and relatable, and with a steady and credible cast of supporting characters. All characters have something valuable to contribute to the investigation, which is a good thing as Black Rock Falls seems to be serial killer central. The Author conveyed the changing sense of fear, helplessness, futility, anger, and steely determination of the kidnapped teenagers, in a way I could almost feel it. The tension was palpable throughout as it built to the inevitable showdown between good and wicked and it did not disappoint.
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this book which I am happy to recommend to any thriller readers and fans of the author. I gave Good Girls Don’t Cry, by D. K. Hood, five stars and can’t wait for book 27. You can support your local book shops by buying the other book in the series. You can also buy there books and ebooks from Amazon, Kobo, Apple, and Google.
The premise of this book pulls you straight in but it is a tough book to jump into if you haven't read other books in the series, something I will personally soon rectify. However, while being a first time reader of both books in this series and books by DK Hood, I still enjoyed the book. I simply had a tough time understanding all the relationships between the tight knit cast. This book has a great pace and is gritty and can almost be a touch shocking to read. One early scene hit me hard with horror. The number of young people who went from excitedly going to their prom to victim is horrific and you have to feel shocked when reading it. So many young lives cut tragically short and in such a horrific manner. The author does not shy away from topics just because they are hard to read. The book is designed, in my opinion, to mirror a very realistic tragedy and you can't shy away from something because it is hard. Jenna, Kane and their team has obviously been well established in previous books as a smart and hard working crew. In fact, Jenna doesn't stand down from being part of the crew despite her advanced pregnancy. She is perfect for the gritty story because she has grit of her own and she uses it to face whatever comes her way. Her explanation to David about why she had to go in the woods to help investigate was very telling. She wanted to be part of the case but it was not best for her health but she persevered at getting her way. I suspect her husband knew she was manipulating him but let her because she is the heart of the team. I need to check out other books in the series to learn more about the cast. Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for the opportunity to read this ARC.
Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this eARC.
D.K. Hood’s "Good Girls Don’t Cry" is a chilling, pulse-pounding thriller that immediately grips and refuses to let go. As the 26th installment in the "Detectives Kane and Alton" series, it delivers a masterful blend of psychological tension, procedural precision, and emotional depth.
The novel opens with a haunting scene: Madison, dressed in a pink tulle prom dress, flees into the wilderness, pursued by an unseen menace. Meanwhile, Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy David Kane face their worst nightmare—a limousine carrying ten teenagers has vanished into the dark forests of Black Rock Falls. Shortly thereafter the bodies of the young men are found, but the teenage girls have disappeared.
Hood’s storytelling is razor-sharp, balancing relentless suspense with deeply human moments. Jenna and Kane’s investigation is methodical yet emotionally charged, as they race against time to uncover the truth behind the gruesome murders.
"Good Girls Don’t Cry" creates a compelling portrayal of fear and resilience.
Hood immerses the reader in the raw terror of the victims, the desperation of their families, and the unwavering determination of those seeking justice.
Hood’s ability to weave intricate crime narratives while maintaining emotional depth is what makes her one of the most compelling voices in thriller fiction today.
A must-read for fans of mysteries and police procedurals.
⭐ Rating: 5/5 – A gripping, emotionally intense thriller that will leave you breathless.
With three young girls unaccounted for, Jenna’s team works around the clock in the dense woodland looking for clues before they find themselves under attack as well. The twenty sixth book in the series & another very well written, edge of the seat thriller. I love both Dave & Jenna & love how I’ve got to know them throughout the series & how their relationship has grown. Jenna is on a tight time frame as she’s heavily pregnant. Strong characters, a fast paced story had the pages flying by & I was loathe to put it down. Another great addition to the series I voluntarily read and reviewed a special copy of this book; all thoughts and opinions are my own
This latest installment in the Detective Jenna Alton series is a gritty, fast-paced thriller that hits the ground running—literally. From the eerie disappearance of a limo full of prom-goers to the grim discovery of carefully staged bodies in the forest, the stakes rise quickly and relentlessly. It's a haunting premise, and author D.K. Hood executes it with tension and urgency.
The story flows smoothly, and the pacing never lets up. What makes it especially compelling, though, is the strength of its characters. Jenna Alton and David Kane are more than just investigators—they’re a well-matched, emotionally grounded team whose bond and banter add warmth and familiarity to an otherwise chilling story. It's been a pleasure watching these characters evolve over the series, growing more layered with each book.
Set in the quirky, serial-killer-magnet town of Black Rock Falls, the novel embraces its dark setting without ever becoming over-the-top. There's a real sense of danger here—particularly given the number of young victims—which gives the book a gritty, unsettling edge. The nods to previous cases and the suggestion of a copycat killer also add an extra layer of intrigue for longtime fans of the series.
In short: a gripping, atmospheric crime novel with strong leads, relentless suspense, and just the right amount of emotional depth. If you enjoy thrillers that balance character development with high stakes, this is one to read—with the lights on.

Wow. Book 26 and this series has never disappointed me. I love all the regular main characters, and it's good that they all get along and welcome new members to the team. Jenna, still heavily pregnant, and Dave are enjoying a well-earned day off when they receive the phone call telling them that ten missing teens never showed up for their prom.It looks like Jenna and Dave are dealing with a copycat killer, but there is one addition on the bodies - Not Mine. Jenna and her team work around the clock to find the clues to lead them to the killer.

I would like to thank #NetGalley #Bookouture and the author #DKHood for my ARC of #GoodGirlsDontCry in exchange for an honest review.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for my copy of this book.
When a limo of 6 couples going to prom goes missing the call is made for on the sheriff’s office. Jenna and deputy Dave are shocked to find it in the river with all 6 boys dead. As they slowly discover girls bodies, it is clear someone is copycatting their previous cases. With Jenna heavily pregnant, the other deputies are called into investigate. Is there another serial killer in black rock falls?
I just love this series! The tension in this story was immense. I was scared at points that this was when we lost one of our main characters. The murders were described in gruesome detail and the fear the girls felt radiated from the (kindle) pages. This was really one I couldn’t put down. It was exciting but stressful at times and I really felt I was there with the team. The characters and the way they interact is very real. I’m now impatient to find out what happens next!
This could be read as standalone, but I highly recommend starting with book 1 and reading them all!
I can’t seem to get enough of Jenna and Dave and everyone else in this incredible series. As the books have progressed more people have joined the family of characters that make up the entire team and each one is seamlessly connected and immediately feels like they have been there all along. The author has created a lot of great stories that are thrilling and exciting and extremely hard to put down. This is serial killer central and the stories are intense. It’s a thrill ride that doesn’t let you down.
This was one of the more creepy stories with a psychopath that had a mission to make sure his story was told. The author brought in some past events that were making it very difficult to find out who was responsible and the more it continued the twists and turns had me going. I read it in one day. I was so absorbed that I neglected everything else to keep reading.
As always, Dave comes through wearing his heart on his sleeve and rises to the occasion. The ending was just…. Omg!!
Book 26 and D. K. Hood delivers another gripping read!
As expected in this series, a great pace, continued character development and a new serial killer in town that Sheriff Jenna Alton and her team will catch.
Five teen couples off to prom in a limo, a night of anticipation, a night to remember, turns to tragedy and horror when a serial killer sets his sights on this group to prove Jenna and her team made a mistake on a past case. He is back and he wants recognition and enjoys every minute.
This case will take you down memory lane of past cases. Carter joins the team during the search and stays on to support and when a team member is injured, Jenna calls on Raven to continue to lend a hand after he provides some initial assistance in the search efforts.
The book ends on a happy note and to avoid too much of a spoiler for those not this far in the series yet, there is a new little addition to the group….
Kane and Alton must conquer a huge case that their entire regimen will need to handle. Alton is 9 months pregnant with the baby’s arrival expected any day. When ten students disappear on their way to the prom she must handle the case from the office, doling out assignments carefully. They are hunting down recent sex offenders to discover where they have been during the time of the students disappearance. Good Girls Don’t Cry will be published on June 24, 2025 by Bookouture. I was able to read Hood’s latest novel via NetGalley. It is the first of her Kane and Alton series that I have read. Surprisingly I was able to follow the plot without reading prior books. Good Girls Don’t Cry was sad and frightening. One never knew what evil track the perpetrator would attempt next. It was excellent and great suspense. Whether a fan or first reader - do enjoy!
Jenna is 9 months pregnant at the start of this book and because of that, when a bunch of teenagers go missing on their way to the prom, she is unable to get as fully involved as she normally would. She trusts her team though and when they find the limo crashed into a river, it puts a lot of wheels in motion.....
I can't believe that this is book 26 already!! I have read most of them and enjoyed them all. My favourite part is getting to know the characters as we go along and with Jenna being very pregnant in this one, I was hoping that we would get a birth somewhere in there. The author didn't disappoint :)
This is a particularly nasty case for the team to be working on. 10 teenagers, and they have to figure out why they were taken, what has happened to the missing ones and work out who could be responsible for such terrible crimes as the bodies keep on mounting up.
Ten friends, dressed up and travelling to their prom But where did the blood of the driver come from? The limousine never reaches their school, Is this a prank? Who're they hoping to fool?
A time of celebration becomes frighteningly fraught With a serial killer determined to kill, not be caught. The driver and five boys were the first victims to be found But where are the girls, are any clues around?
With Jenna going to give birth soon, too, She wants the killer caught before she's due. But keeping safe is part of what she needs to do. But finding the girls is important, too.
A horrific story, a terrible crime thriller As events unfold, revealing a frightening killer. With nature thwarting efforts and other dangers, too, This is a suspense filled thriller I highly recommend to you.
For my copy of this book I say a huge thank you As I share with you this, my honest review.
Tragic for a limousine load of teenagers bound for the prom, with a heavily pregnant Sheriff Alton and crew to the rescue. I consider Black Rock Falls the serial killer hub of Montana with all the mayhem they wreak in each book in this series of which I am an ardent fan. The plot is gripping, the killer a mystery until the exciting climax, and Alton's crew has the personnel and tactical gear to handle every contingency, even tremors and rock slides!
A feature of this story I really appreciated: the author's use of multiple POV includes frequent glimpses through the victims' perspectives.
Great entertainment for a reader who doesn't mind a good measure of darkness.
Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for sharing a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest opinion.
Thank you for providing me with an advanced reader copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.
When I started reading, I didn't realize this was the 26th book in the series, and I haven't read any of the previous installments. While there were mentions of past events that I expected to be explored further, the author did an excellent job of providing just enough detail to create intrigue without making me feel lost.
The book immediately dives into a horrific scene and maintains relentless suspense throughout, delivering a truly thrilling experience. I finished it in less than 24 hours, and at one point, I had to take a break because I was so emotionally invested in the story and its characters.
If you're looking for a captivating summer read, this series is a fantastic choice! I'm now excited to go back and read the entire series from the beginning.
