Hannah Merrill and her fiancé are getting ready for their wedding when they learn the vicar is missing. Fortunately, they are able to find another minister available and the wedding can go ahead. Later, however, the original vicar is found dead and Hannah and her Aunt Violet set out to uncover the murder only to discover the vicar had been keeping some very big secrets.

Murder at the Wedding is the fifth in the Miss Merrill and Aunt Violet cozy historical mystery series by Anita Davidson and it a fun, twisty tale. Hannah and her unorthodox aunt make a very likeable and smart crime-solving duo and the mystery was interesting making this a very enjoyable historical cozy indeed.

Thanks to Netgalley and Boldwood Books for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review

This is the first book I've read by this author and even though it's book five in a series I had no trouble keeping up. The author made it easy to get to know the characters by little flash backs without over doing the explaining.
Not since Agatha Christie books have I enjoyed a cosy mystery so much! The writing is great with the story flowing along easily. I love how there are nuggets of history of the time dropped in without over loading the story. They're treated as an everyday occurrence which of course they were at the time. The relationship between Hannah and her Aunt Violet is wonderful.
I will definitely be going back to the start of the series because even though this book was easy to follow I think it would enhance the enjoyment of further reading to get to know the characters from book one.
I didn't for one second guess who the murderer was so was pleasantly, if that's the right word, surprised at the end. I highly recommend this to cosy mystery lovers or indeed Agatha Christie fans.

Many thanks to Boldwood Books and NetGalley for an early copy.

Murder at the Wedding is a fabulous new mystery in the Miss Merill and Aunt Violet mystery series.

Hannah is finally married but no sooner has she said, 'I do,' than she finds a body. (What a horror on her wedding day). What they determine is a matter of suicide becomes something much worse as murder is soon suspected. Hannah and her aunt determine to find the solution because the new police inspector isn't up to the task.

It's good to see Hannah and Violet working together in this book. They're a great team (I felt in the previous book that there wasn't quite enough of Aunt Violet). The mystery is well structured, seemingly impossible to solve for much of the novel and I didn't guess the resolution, which I always appreciate.

This is another enjoyable read in the on-going historical mystery series.

It is 4th May 1918, and wedding bells are about to finally ring out for Hannah Merrill and her fiance Darius Clifford, or they will if only someone can locate the vicar!  Once the service is concluded, a suitable substitute having been persuaded to step in, the happy couple are horrified to discover a body when they visit the last resting place of Hannah’s best friend, Lily-Anne, to leave her the bridal bouquet. Not one to let a good mystery go to waste, and with her new husband overwhelmed with work at the Admiralty, Hannah and her Aunt Violet begin to look into what could have happened. It soon becomes clear the victim was keeping secrets and had endured a tragic past. Did any of that have a bearing on the present-day situation, or are they way off course? Could there even be a possibility of a killer walking away undetected?

I was able to read an advanced copy of this thanks to NetGalley and the publishers, Boldwood Books, but the opinions expressed are my own opinion. Book 5 in Anita Davison's brilliant series is the third I've read and definitely the best yet. I loved all the investigative parts but the everyday life of the two main protagonists, one head over heels in love while the other was worried about her dearly beloved added a great background to their scenes together. There were some continuity problems, but as this was an arc, I haven't let them change my rating. I didn't guess whodunit until I was supposed to, and it all fitted together perfectly. Highly recommended, but there are spoilers, so starting at the beginning of the series is probably a good idea!

Thank you to NetGalley and Boldwood Books for the ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.

This is the first book of this series that I have read but the author did such a good job of incorporating just enough information from the past books that I didn't feel lost or confused at all. This was a cozy historical mystery and a fun read.

Set in London in 1918, Hannah is just trying to enjoy her wedding day. But, there's a mystery afoot! There are a lot of characters and each one was unique. Hannah and Aunt Violet are awesome!

If you're in the mood for a cozy mystery, I would definitely recommend this book!

Murder at the Wedding by Anita Davison.
Boldwood Books, thank you kindly for the ARC and to NetGalley for enabling my nosy, sleuthing tendencies.

Let’s start with the obvious: weddings are stressful enough without corpses cluttering up the crypt. Seating charts, flowers, making sure the best man doesn’t overdo it at the champagne fountain—that’s plenty of chaos. But in Anita Davison’s Murder at the Wedding, the bride’s biggest obstacle isn’t her overbearing relatives or the weather, it’s that the vicar winds up poisoned before he can tie the knot. Honestly, talk about an inconvenient way to derail “I do.” Forget confetti, here we’re dusting off fingerprints.

Enter Hannah Merrill, our bride and accidental sleuth, who isn’t the type to sit prettily on a chaise longue waiting for the menfolk to “handle things.” Beside her is Aunt Violet, who is an absolute delight—a suffragette with a razor tongue and zero tolerance for patriarchy. Together they make one of the more entertaining detective duos I’ve read in ages. Their dynamic is sharp, witty, and unflinchingly modern despite the 1916 setting. Violet, in particular, is the kind of woman who could scare a murderer into confessing just by arching an eyebrow.

What Davison does brilliantly is build a world dripping with period charm without drowning us in sepia-toned nostalgia. We get just enough historical detail to remind us we’re in wartime London—rationing, societal expectations, the constant hum of change—but the story zips along with a pace that feels fresh. At its heart, this is less about dusting off relics of the past and more about showing how fiercely intelligent women navigate a society desperate to keep them in their place.

The mystery itself? Deliciously tangled. Every character is a potential suspect, every alibi has a thread to pull at, and the “quiet” village atmosphere hides more secrets than the crypt where the poor vicar ended up. Davison teases us with red herrings that are just plausible enough to make you believe them, and then whips the rug out with a twist that makes you wonder why you ever trusted that sweet, bookish cousin in the corner. I pride myself on spotting the culprit early in these sorts of stories, and let’s just say I was feeling very smug—right up until the reveal made it embarrassingly clear I’d been outfoxed.

And then there’s the humor. Not laugh-out-loud slapstick, but a deliciously dry wit woven into the dialogue and narration. Violet gets the best lines, of course, casually dismantling the male ego with one-liners sharp enough to shave with. At one point she mutters, “‘If men could solve problems without bluster and whisky, the world would be a better place,’” and honestly, if someone doesn’t put that on a mug, I will. The banter between her and Hannah sparkles, giving the book that cosy lift even as bodies inconveniently drop.

Another highlight is how Davison captures the social niceties of the time without making them feel like homework. This is historical fiction that knows we came for the murder and stayed for the sass. From whispered scandals to stiff family expectations, the texture of the world adds flavor without bogging the plot down. I also appreciated the hints of romance—not overwhelming, not cloying, just enough to remind us that Hannah is more than her detective skills and that love, even in the shadow of murder, still matters.

If you’ve read the previous installments in the Miss Merrill and Aunt Violet series, you’ll already know the delight of spending time with these two. If you haven’t, you can absolutely jump in here without feeling lost. The characters are vivid, the pacing brisk, and the payoff immensely satisfying. This is one of those cosy mysteries that makes you want to curl up with a blanket, a pot of tea, and absolutely no interruptions until the last page.

By the time I closed the book, I felt both smugly entertained and slightly annoyed at myself for not catching on sooner. But that’s the mark of a great mystery, isn’t it? You want to be tricked. You want to gasp when the truth is laid bare. And Murder at the Wedding gives you exactly that—plus a cheeky grin to go with it.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I thank NetGalley and Boldwood Books for an advance reader copy of Murder at the Wedding. All opinions and comments are my own.

The time has come for the nuptials of Hannah Merrill and Darius Clifford. There’s only one problem -- their officiant, Reverend Aldrich, has gone missing. Luckily a substitute is found at the last minute, and the happy couple is united in holy matrimony. Unfortunately, not long after, it’s determined that the vicar Aldrich has joined the ranks of the dearly departed. Not the best start to wedding bliss.

Bad news for the bride -- our Miss Merrill (now Mrs. Clifford) and her Aunt Violet have another death on their hands (since this is book #5, they’ve gotten quite used to it by now). But since circumstances have changed now that Hannah’s a married woman, shouldn’t they stay out of it? Not likely, especially when a woman shows up claiming to be the reverend’s secret bride.

With Aunt Violet’s help, and support from DCI Farrell and of course darling Darius, it won’t be long before a culprit is identified. Particularly when there’s a lot of (well-defined) characters that constitute a host of suspects that can’t be overlooked, including the newly arrived bride’s very unhappy father. And then there’s a tragedy from the past, which has a way of causing trouble in the present. Hannah and Aunt Violet have their hands-full with this one, although there are signs pointing to a person who seems so terribly guilty. But can it be so easy? Author Anita Davison has some tricks up her writing sleeves in Murder at the Wedding.

Also included in the narrative are the changes in store for our two protagonists as Hannah faces her new life as a married woman; how much freedom can she expect, for instance (this is 1918, after all), and the growth of Aunt Violet’s relationship with DCI Farrell. Some changes going on there, too. It will be interesting to see how the author incorporates these new circumstances in future books.

The fifth book in the Miss Merrill and Aunt Violet Mysteries and while Murder at the Wedding was my first read from this author I don’t feel I missed anything by joining mid series so to speak and if I was to go back and read the earlier books out of sync then they haven’t been spoilt. Set towards the end of the First World War just as life was changing for everyone, Hannah Merrill was about to marry if anyone can find the vicar that is. Fortunately, a stand in is found but when the bride and groom are leaving they find the body of the vicar and of course Hannah and her aunt Violet are going to investigate…. well, it would be rude not to.

As an introduce to this particular author, I found her style of writing made for a well-paced, cosy, light-hearted mystery that was easy to follow with several twists and turns with an array of colourful characters. I enjoyed that the sleuths were both strong -willed, independent characters at a time when a woman duty was expected to find a suitable husband and have a family. OK Hannah fulfils part of that role but somehow, I don't think that marriage will curb her extra-curricular activities in the future. I particularly liked the character of Aunt Violet who was definitely a woman out of her time. Even if I was unable to guess the identity of the villain of the piece, the overall story was enjoyable and engaged my attention from the start. I loved the setting and the historic references sprinkled throughout that captured the ambience of that particular time, adding detail and depth and helping to bring the story to life. This is an author I’d be happy to read more from.

Miss Merrill and Aunt Violet find themselves embroiled in another investigation in the latest crime novel by Anita Davison: Murder at the Wedding.

Hannah is looking forward to marrying the love of her life and to spending the rest of her days with her soulmate – but they need to find their vicar first before they can say ‘I do’. When he’s found poisoned in the crypt of the church, Hannah and her Aunt Violet are left with no other choice but to figure out whodunnit and they quickly realise that the vicar had plenty of secrets he was keen to keep under wraps…

When the vicar’s fiancé turns up, shockwaves are sent all around the congregation. Nobody knew that the vicar was seeing anyone, let alone that he was engaged! What else is the vicar hiding? Could his fiancé know far more than they are letting on? Why was the vicar poisoned? And what secrets did he have that were so dangerous that somebody was prepared to kill him for it?

Hannah’s intended might urge caution, but Miss Merrill and her Aunt Violet know that they are the only ones who can get to the bottom of this mystery. Can this intrepid duo stop a killer in time? Or will a vicar be needed to conduct both of their funerals?

Anita Davison hits the spot yet again with Murder at the Wedding! Perfect for readers who enjoy historical cosy crime, Murder at the Wedding is a fast-paced, fun and enjoyable mystery that is a delight from beginning to end. Packed with tension, intrigue and red herrings, Murder at the Wedding by Anita Davison will keep readers gleefully turning the pages late into the night.

Murder at the Wedding is a British historical cozy mystery set in 1918. It is the 5th book in the Miss Merrill and Aunt Violet Mysteries.

We find Hannah Merrill marrying her childhood sweetheart Darius Clifford with all her family and friends surrounding her, the only person missing is the vicar. A replacement is found, and the wedding ceremony is completed Unfortunately, Hannah and Darius find the missing vicar dead in the entrance to the tomb where Hannah's late best friend is buried. Who would want the young vicar dead and why? Hannah and Aunt Violet are determined to find out.

This is my first time reading this series and this author. I have to say I was pulled in from the first chapter. I did not want to put it down until I finished it. It is set against the backdrop of WWI in England. Aunt Violet is my hero. She is a strong woman ahead of her time. Hannah is so relatable. She finds herself in uncertain personal territory, the taking over the reins of a manor house with established staff and a husband who is tied up with the War Office. We can all relate to how she feels. You will love all the characters in this book. They complement the story so well and you really care about them.
The mystery is so good. It is full of secrets, red herrings and twists and turns that will keep you guessing until the end. I can't wait till the next one, but I am going to go back and read the ones I have missed so far.

“Murder at the Wedding” is the fifth book in Anita Davison’s Miss Merrill and Aunt Violet historical cozy mystery series but the first one I’ve read in the series. While the book does reference some past cases, I was able to read and enjoy this book without having read any of the other books. I like the setting – England during World War I – Davison manages to convey the toll the war took without being graphic or making the book too traumatic to read. I also like the main characters – newly married Hannah Merrill and her somewhat irrepressible Aunt Violet – they make a great crime solving pair. This book finds the two investigating the murder of the vicar who was supposed to perform Hannah’s wedding – their investigating will turn up past events that some may want to keep hidden. For the most part I found the mystery to be well done – Davison has a subtle way of writing that will have readers drawing their own conclusions about certain characters (and thinking about them long after they have finished reading the book). There are plenty of twists and turns and more than a few surprises in the book – my one complaint is that I like to try and figure out who the killer is as I read mysteries and I felt like I didn’t have enough information to do so with this book (there were some hints along the way but I felt there weren’t enough and perhaps hidden a bit too well behind a big red herring). That aside – I really enjoyed this book and plan on reading other books in the series.

I received a copy of this book from NetGalley.

ARC Review

“Murder at the Wedding” by Anita Davison is the fifth installment in the Miss Merrill and Aunt Violet Mystery series.

Hannah Merrill is finally marrying her fiancé, Darius, in what was supposed to be a quiet ceremony with only a few guests. But on the morning of the wedding, Reverend Aldrich goes missing. Another minister is quickly found to perform the ceremony, but by the end of the day, Hannah stumbles upon the missing reverend—dead.

Although Darius urges her not to get involved with the police investigation, Hannah can’t resist. With her aunt Violet by her side, she begins her own sleuthing. At first, there seems to be no reason anyone would want Aldrich dead. But when his secret wife turns up, the list of suspects grows rapidly. Can Hannah and Violet uncover the truth before danger finds them?

Fans of cozy mysteries will adore this book. It carries the same gentle yet intriguing charm of a Miss Marple story, with amateur sleuths who are sharp and resourceful. The plot is engaging, the pacing steady, and the world-building vivid. While there are several twists, the final reveal of the murderer was the biggest surprise for me.

Hannah and Aunt Violet make a delightful duo—two independent, curious women who shine in every scene. I especially loved the “interviews” with Violet’s old acquaintances, which added both humor and insight.

⭐ Highly recommended for cozy mystery lovers!

Thank you NetGalley and Boldwood Books for the opportunity to read "Murder at the Wedding" in exchange for my honest opinion.

This is the fifth book in the Miss Merrill and Aunt Violet mystery series. The story starts with the invitation to the wedding of Hannah Merrill to Darius Clifford on the 4th of May, 1918. What could possibly go wrong at a wedding. Reverend Julius Aldrich is supposed to officiate at the wedding but he seems to be missing. When he is later found dead by the mausoleum of Hannah's dear friend Lily Anne who was murdered 3 years ago, it seems that Hannah and her Aunt Violet will have a case to solve. Detective Chief Inspector Aidan Farrell of Scotland Yard is not in charge of this case but a new detective whom he doesn't appear to have much confidence in.

At first thinking that the reverend had an accident the pathologist's report comes as a shock to everyone. Even more so when a young woman shows up claiming to be his wife when everyone thought that he was single. There are a lot of secrets and this case loops back to something that happened years back to people that Aunt Violet appears to have known. How Hannah and Violet figure out what happened and why is a wonderful piece of writing as always from Ms. Davison. There are hints in the story that Aidan might not be with the police for much longer and may be taking a different direction with his life.

Anita Davison’s latest instalment in the Miss Merrill and Aunt Violet series is a charming cocktail of murder, mischief, and matrimonial mayhem. Set against the backdrop of 1916 London, this cosy mystery opens with Hannah Merrill preparing to wed her beloved—until the vicar vanishes and turns up poisoned in the church crypt. So much for a quiet celebration.

What follows is a deliciously layered whodunnit, with secrets unraveling faster than a dropped stitch in Violet’s knitting basket. Hannah, ever the spirited heroine, refuses to be sidelined by societal expectations or her fiancé’s well-meaning protests. With Aunt Violet—equal parts suffragette and sleuth—by her side, the duo dives headfirst into a mystery that’s as scandalous as it is suspenseful.

Davison’s prose sparkles with wit and warmth, and her cast of characters—from the enigmatic vicar’s secret fiancé to the ever-adorable Bartleby the bookshop cat—are vividly drawn and endlessly entertaining. Fans of Agatha Christie and Helena Dixon will feel right at home in this world of tea, treachery, and tenacity.

If you’re craving a mystery that’s clever without being grim, and historical fiction that doesn’t take itself too seriously, this one’s a gem. Just don’t drink the tea until you know who brewed it.

With thanks to Anita Davison, the publisher and NetGalley for the ARC.

I was delighted to dive into the next instalment of the Miss Merril and Aunt Violet series. The story opens right in the middle of the action – on the day of Hannah and Darius’s long-awaited wedding. After several postponements, there’s understandable alarm when the priest goes missing. A stand-in is quickly found, and the ceremony goes ahead, but the celebrations take a grim turn when the newlyweds discover the missing priest dead on the floor of Hannah’s late best friend’s mausoleum.

With Darius occupied by his work at the War Office, Aiden’s mother unwell, and an inept inspector assigned to the case, it once again falls to Hannah and Aunt Violet to unravel the mystery.

I love how the blend of genres gives readers both an engaging cozy mystery and a vivid portrayal of everyday life during the First World War. The glimpse into Aunt Violet’s wilder days was especially entertaining, as was seeing the quiet progress made by strong women pushing against societal limits. I was pleased to see more of Tilly, though I did miss Ivy’s lively presence.

A thoroughly enjoyable read – highly recommended for fans of historical fiction and cozy mysteries alike. I’m already looking forward to the next instalment.

Miss Merrill and Aunt Violet Mystery #5

The couple are determined that their low-key celebration will go without a hitch, but there can't be an "I do" while the vicar is missing. And when he's found dead - a victim of poisoning - in the crypt behind the church, Hannah knows only she and aunt Violet can find out who did it. Hannah's beloved thinks she shouldn't interfere. But he fails to remember that an independent woman in 1918 doesn't do what she's told by a man, the dead vicar may be the least of his worries. Then the vicar's own fiance appears on the scene, even though nobody knew he was engaged. And suddenly it becomes clear, someone has a secret, one shocking enough to kill for.

Wedding bells are about to ring for Hannah Merrill and her fiance Darius Clifford. But the vicar is missing. A substitute is called in, and Hannah and Darius are now married. But as the happy couple go to lay her bouquet, they discover the vicar's dead body. Hannah and her aunt Violet investigate the murder.

I love this cosy murder mystery series and the two main characters, Hannah and aunt Violet. This nook could be read as a standalone.

My Opinion

I have been really enjoying the Miss Merrill and Aunt Violet Mysteries Series so I was delighted when I saw that there was a new release. Whilst Murder at the Wedding is the fifth book in the series, I feel that it could be read as a standalone. A lovely, cosy mystery with some great characters. This was a great addition to the series.

I’ll admit, I picked this one up because I can never resist a historical mystery set against the backdrop of high society scandal and Anita Davison delivered exactly what I was hoping for! Murder at the Wedding drops us right into the elegance and chaos of a grand 1920s wedding, where champagne flows, secrets simmer, and murder lurks in the wings.

As I followed Flora Maguire through the story, I couldn’t help but admire her. She’s sharp, determined, and never content to simply accept the surface explanation exactly the kind of amateur sleuth I love. What should have been a day of celebration quickly spirals into intrigue, and the mix of family drama, hidden motives, and period detail made the mystery feel both glamorous and tense.

I found myself completely swept up in the “whodunit” guessing game, changing my mind more than once before the truth came out. And honestly? That’s the best kind of mystery for me, the kind where I think I’m clever, only for the author to outsmart me in the end.

✨️If you love cozy historical mysteries with a strong, intelligent heroine and just the right touch of glamour, this one is a treat!

Murder at the Wedding has the charm and setting I enjoy in Anita Davison’s mysteries, and it was lovely to spend more time with familiar characters and the world they inhabit. The sense of place is always one of the best parts of this series, and that remains true here. The relationships, the social dynamics, and the gentle humour all give the story warmth.

However, I did find the pacing slower than usual. Not a great deal happens for much of the book, and the mystery only really gains momentum near the end. It isn’t unenjoyable — it just felt like it took its time settling into the central conflict. When the reveal and resolution finally arrive, they are satisfying and well put together, but I did wish the tension had built a little earlier.

That said, the characters are written with affection and personality, and I always appreciate how Davison captures the atmosphere of the period — the details of daily life, manners, and social expectations are spot on.

Overall, this was still an enjoyable read, just one with a gentler pace.
A pleasant addition to the series, especially for readers who love character-focused historical mysteries.

Hannah and Darius are finally ready to walk down the aisle but their vicar is missing. They are able to get a replacement but then find the usual vicar dead straight after the ceremony...
Murder at the Wedding is the 5th book in Miss Merrill and Aunt Violet series of cosy murder mysteries set during WW1.
Their romance hasn't always run smoothly but neither Hannah nor Darius expected to find a body minutes after saying 'I do'! It doesn't ruin their big day but it soon becomes clear that the vicar was poisoned. The next day the vicar’s secret wife turns up and Aunt Violet realises she knows some of the key suspects and potential motives.
Hannah’s husband goes back to war office straight after wedding so the murder gives her something to focus on, while the personal connection for Violet ensures the women work together diligently to uncover the killer.
The background to the plot is successfully underpinned by the historical detail about the Suffragettes and the First World War. I felt sorry for Hannah as she struggles to adapt to married life in a new home and absent husband but she is luckier than most as her husband is safely away from the trenches.
Murder at the Wedding is an enjoyable and intriguing cosy murder mystery.

In the latest Miss Merrill and Aunt Violet historical mystery novel, readers join Hannah for her wedding day, but when the vicar is missing and soon found dead in the crypt, Hannah and Aunt Violet are the best detectives for the job. Hannah’s future husband doesn’t think she should investigate, but it’s 1916, and Hannah won’t let a man, even one she loves, dictate her decisions. When the vicar’s secret fiancee appears on the scene, Hannah and Aunt Violet soon realize there are a lot of secrets in this church, and one of them is big enough to result in the murder of a vicar. Complicated, entertaining, and packed with high stakes, readers will love the mystery that Anita Davison has woven for Aunt Violet and Hannah, whose witty dynamic continues to entertain. The new characters and setting offer some new challenges to this investigative duo, as does the opposition of Hannah’s future husband. The historical details and country village setting really bring the story to life and pull readers into the narrative, while the twists and turns of the mystery itself engage readers through to the last page of this fun and entertaining new historical mystery book in an entertaining series.

Thanks to NetGalley and Boldwood Books for the advance copy.

Another great murder mystery by Anita Davison!

It is Hannah's big day. After all the obstacles that have presented themselves, she is finally marrying Darius. Everyone is present and eager. Her mom Madeleine is fussing per usual. Iris, her sister is being ever so helpful, and Aunt Violet is well being herself. It all comes to a stop when Darius informs them that Reverend Julian Aldrich, who is to marry them, is missing. Once everyone starts looking for him, he is discovered dead at the Bantham family tomb. The question is, what was he doing there? This time, it is mostly Hannah, who, with the help of sensationalism, journalist Matilda " Tilly" Gilmartin ,will help solve the accidental death turned murder.

It is always a treat to see all the characters back together. Aunt Violet is always such a fun, smart, and wickedly witty woman. With the war still going on and Hannah's husband being busy, she was able to drive around and investigate this murder mostly by herself. Aunt Violet's antics are always fun to read. And Penny's no hold attitude is hilarious.

May 1918. The wedding day for Hannah and Darius has arrived at last, just one snag – the vicar is missing! Fortunately, they are able to call upon the father of one of the guests to officiate instead. Hannah plans to lay her bouquet at the tomb of her best friend, who was sadly murdered 2 years ago, only to find the vicar lying dead in the doorway. Once it’s established that he was murdered then nothing will stop Hannah and her Aunt Violet investigating especially as the Inspector assigned to the case seems to be asking all the wrong questions.

I really enjoyed catching up with Hannah and her Aunt Violet again, in this enjoyable murder mystery. Plenty of twists and turns and red herrings throughout. As ever Aunt Violet’s knowledge of, and friends in, Society is invaluable as is Hannah’s new acquaintance (not yet a friend), the reporter Matilda, with her access to newspaper archives. Nicely woven throughout the book are references to what was also happening in the world at the time. Definitely recommended.

Thanks to Net Galley and Boldwood Books for an ARC for my honest review.

Taking place in the early 19-teens, Murder at the Wedding introduces you to the bride and her family as they prepare for the much-delayed "big day". Soon after the vows are exchanged, the newly minted Mr & Mrs take a walk in the church garden for a few moments of quiet. And find the missing vicar's body.

And so begins the adventure. With an inept DI at the helm of the investigation, Hannah is sure he won't get it right, so she and Aunt V decide to get it done.

A bride no one knew about, ghosts from the past, even some nearly forgotten old friends of Aunt V, all have a role in solving this crime.

Davison pens an entertaining read with an intriguing storyline and filled with characters you will love. Book Five in the Miss Merrill and Aunt Violet Mysteries was my first foray into the series and such a page-turner that it has me heading to my ebook merchant for the adventures of this intrepid duo that I've missed!

I love this series and enjoyed this instalment: it is clever and quietly exciting. Davison’s writing is polished, her pacing precise, and her tone delightfully dry.
I was glad to catch up with the sharply drawn characters in this elegant, quietly bold mystery. The atmosphere is immersive, the dialogue crisp, and the emotional undercurrents subtle but effective. There’s wit without fuss, tension without theatrics, and a satisfying sense of control in how the mystery unfolds.
The clues are placed with care, misdirection is smart, and the resolution is tidy and earned. Davison trusts her readers to keep up, and that trust is rewarded.
What stands out most is the balance: charm without fluff, suspense without melodrama, and a heroine who is as capable as she is compelling.
If you enjoy historical mysteries that blend grace, intelligence, and just enough bite, Murder at the Wedding is a delight.
Highly recommended

Number five in the Miss Merrill and Aunt Violet mysteries series and as always, so good to read! But for this blogtour, we had a very different start than the previous stories. Hannah and Darius are getting married! For those who know the series, we also know that nothing goes rather "normal" so finding the vicar who will officiate their wedding dead.... not a good start. With the strong characters who have been developed through the previous stories, also now we are getting a story where we can be part of their life, a new life and of course a detective story!
To understand how good this series is, you really need to read them. I promise you cannot not love it and the characters. Anita Davison always manages to write a fun, but also serious story with good dialogues. Murder at the wedding made me read on and on, trying to understand what happened and who was the culprit but also chuckled because of some dialogues. I had a suspicion about who might have done wrong, but didn't see the ending coming!

As usual in my reviews, I will not rehash the plot...there are already some reviews like that out there if that's what you are looking for!

This is the 4th book in the series, this novel is set in 1917 in London during WW1. Like the others in this series, it is an enjoyable "cozy" mystery with an edge..

The main characters (Hannah and her Aunt Violet, Darius, Aidan) are joined by a cast of supporting characters - all well written and believable. I particularly liked the mysterious stranger from Aunt Violet's past. We get to know more about the main characters, and they are developing all the time - reflecting the changing times of the novel's setting.

This novel is once again set in and around Covent Garden (an area I know well). There are several strands to the story - which are all interconnected in the end, but it's not immediately obvious how (this is a good thing!).

I'm already looking forward to the next in this series.

My thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for an ARC. All opinions my own.

This was a fairly enjoyable historical mystery book which, once it got going, was hard to put down. However, the author has populated the first 1/4 of the book with so many different characters that I totally lost track of who was who and who was related to whom! I really considered abandoning the book, but I pushed on past 25% when the main sleuths, Hannah and Aunt Violet, finally began to investigate the murder. From that point on the book was great!

I like the way the two women interact with esch other, the suspects and Scotland Yard. The author introduces various 1918 historical facts which flavor the atmosphere of the story.

I have not read any previous books in this series so maybe that put me at a disadvantage, but I really feel the first 20% of the book could have been reduced to two chapters.

I obtained an advance copy of this book via NetGalley.

1918 and some soldiers are bringing the influenza home with them. Meanwhile, Hannah Merrill and her fiancé Darius Clifford, have had a bit of trouble with their wedding as the vicar was found dead at the bottom of the stairs and a substitute had to be found quickly. But the fall was not exactly an accident as the man had been poisoned and only Hannah and her unconventional Aunt Violet were determined to expose the murderer. Diligent investigation ably assisted by young reporter Matilda.

I always look forward to books in this cosy historical mystery series, as I do like Hannah, Darius and Aunt Violet. They all feature again here, though Aidan is noticeably less present due to his recent promotion which he’s not enjoying as much, being as it keeps him away from the actual investigating.

As another reviewer said, I found this one slightly lighter and thinner in terms of the mystery and action - I was reading it fairly quickly and realised that for the amount of investigating they’d done, I’d thought I was only half way through, but I was actually about 88% read. However, this was still an enjoyable read and I was happy to see Hannah and Darius now married!

I received a free ARC copy of this book via NetGalley and the publishers in return for an unbiased review.
