An absolutely hilarious, uplifting, escapist story, perfect for fans of Maddie Please, Judy Leigh and Dawn French.

I needed a “fun” book after all the heavy stuff I’ve been reading lately. This was perfect for switching off and just experiencing some joy. I loved these two ladies, Patti the rebel and Sandra the follower. Their bucket list was actually an eye opener at what we miss out on, because life is just too busy.
My favourite character was actually Kit, the granddaughter. I really wish we’d seen more of her. The writing wasn’t fabulous, and there were a few repetitive moments, but all in all, it was a nice book that took no effort to enjoy. Once I picked it up, I could just sit and read endlessly. 3.5 Rounded up.
Thank you to NetGalley and Boldwood Books for the opportunity to read and review this ARC.
Since my age is close to that of these women, I have found myself questioning some of the decisions I've made about my life lately after reading this book. Why am I letting society dictate to me what I can and can't do due to my age?
These characters resonated with me, and I think I could really like them if they were real. I didn't think it was particularly hilarious, but it was amusing at times.
This was a quick, pleasent read, especially for those who are wondering what life is all about. I would also like to add that this is a very affordable book for those who read e-books.
Sandra’s life has been on pause since her husband died eight months ago. Her son, who seems to be a bit of a wanker, thinks the answer is a retirement apartment nearby, but Sandra isn’t quite ready to give up her independence. Everything changes when she runs into Patti, an old friend Sandra used to work with, who’s celebrating her victory over cancer by getting a tattoo. The two catch up, become friends again, and they decide to make bucket lists.
Soon, Sandra and Patti are having new adventures, getting tattoos, tackling old fears, and finding unexpected friends—like Mary and her worried husband—who are also looking for something more. These women aren’t about to let life pass them by. If anyone knows how to make the most of every day, it’s this crew. Goes to show you that age means nothing when you are looking to make a difference, and you can't let your "old" age stop you from doing anything you'd like.

The Old Gals’ Bucket List, by Karen King, is such a delightful, fun, heartwarming read. It follows the story of two former coworkers—Sandra and Patti—who during a pivotal time in their lives become reacquainted after many years. As their friendship develops, they help one another fulfill goals and dreams from their individual bucket lists, and let’s just say this doesn’t go unnoticed. Through encouragement and understanding, they lift one another up and every other character along the way.
I absolutely loved this book and would pay money to see this with my besties on the big screen! The characters and plot are fluid. It’s relatable, hilarious, touching, and has just the right amount of tension to keep you glued and flipping pages from start to finish. It’s the perfect empowering, feel-good friendship book I’ve read this year.
***I received an advance copy from Boldwood Books via NetGalley, and these thoughts are my own opinion***
always enjoy it when authors write characters that are not in their 20s because hey we these girts prove t! ARC | Enjoyable, not earth-shattering | I enjoyed this book, and I recommend it, and readers of this review need to keep that in mind, because I have a number of drawbacks to mention. The copyediting of the Advanced Readers Copy I received was atrocious. I sincerely hope it's resolved before publication, because this many errors are embarrassing. "That's" instead of "that", "has" instead of "had", "Andra" instead of "Sandra" as a chapter heading, "had" instead of "a", most of the reading experience was adjusting what was there to what was intended. There are several "oh, dear" cringe issues, which don't help sell the idea of older women being just as connected. In all my experience with Instagram, across multiple countries, and working with all ages, I have never heard anyone call it "Insta". Every time they said it (and they say it on the majority of pages), it was jarring. In the same way, the term is not "tag in". You don't "tag them in on Insta" and people don't tell you "if you tag us in, we'll share your post". It's just "tag". "Hey, tag me, will you?" "I've tagged you". And as a person with seven tattoos, nothing about those tattoo scenes reflected reality. My biggest concern, though, was that the technical ability of the writing was pedestrian (I'm so sorry, I do not delight in this). The entire book I was ignoring the above issues and overlooking the totally unrealistic dialogue and clunky exposition, because I thought it was a debut writer's first attempt. At the end to discover that she's been published multiple times! Despite ALL of that (none of which do I enjoy enumerating), the book was what I wanted it to be. The romance, though rushed and unnecessary, took a far backseat to the friendships and self-building. The conflict (though stretched) was not disturbing. The attitude was excellent, the activities were within reach for many, and the resolution was satisfying. It is worth the time.
ARC provided free of charge, which (clearly) did not impact my review.
I do love a story centred around characters of a certain age, and this was a perfect pick-me-up, A reminder that just because you are a bit older, it doesn't mean you can't keep on learning and experiencing new things in life. Sandra is widowed and struggling to get the confidence to live without her beloved husband Brian. Her son wants her to up sticks and move closer to where he will be living with his family, as they are also moving. A chance meeting with an old colleague and friend, Patti, who is also alone now and a cancer survivor, kick-starts a life-changing set of decisions that helps both women begin to live again. They create their own bucket lists, including learning new things and defeating lifelong fears, and with the help of Patti's granddaughter, they start an Instagram account following the Old Gals and their Bucket List quest. I loved this. The idea of a bucket list has always intrigued me, but I haven't ever created one myself. I think I may have to, now, after reading this! There is so much to revel in from rekindling old friendships to igniting other sparks, as well as a good old-fashioned adventure. Many thanks to NetGalley and Boldwood Books for an ARC.
The Old Gals’ Bucket List by Karen King is a delightful and uplifting story about friendship, second chances, and rediscovering joy later in life. The novel follows Patti and Sandra, two retirees who reconnect after years apart. Patti is celebrating being cancer-free, while Sandra faces pressure from her son to move to Cambridge. Instead, the two women decide to take control of their own happiness by creating bucket lists—and in doing so, they set out to truly start living again.
This book was cute, fun, and full of heart. I loved both main characters and found their adventures believable and inspiring. The pacing was great, the story moved smoothly, and the character arcs felt natural and satisfying. The short chapters made it easy to read in small bursts, which I really appreciated.
This was my first book by Karen King, and I thoroughly enjoyed her warm, engaging writing style. I’ll definitely be picking up more of her books in the future.
Thank you to NetGalley and Boldwood Books for this ARC.
The Old Gals Bucket List was just pure joy to read . From start to finish I was completely captivated by the two ladies Sandra and Patti and all they had been through and more importantly how they were determined to live their lives to the fullest . This book made me laugh out loud at times but there was also some emotional moments . I so admired there ladies for getting on with life and having lots of fun at the same time. Ms King has described their adventures so well and I loved their journey to Spain. Living near Malaga myself I loved reading about all the places in the area the ladies visited. To sum up this is another superb read by this author which I highly recommend.
Warm-hearted, witty and hard to put down, The Old Gals’ Bucket List is the immensely enjoyable new novel from Karen King women of all ages will relate to and love.
Widowed for nearly a year, Sandra feels as if she’s at a crossroads in her life. Losing her beloved husband was bad enough, but rattling around her house by herself is only compounding her loneliness. Her son wants her to sell up and move into a retirement home close to him, however, Sandra isn’t sure. Should she heed her son’s advice? Or should she grasp the nettle, grab the bull by the horns and start living life on her own terms?
Bumping into her old friend Patti on her way to getting her first tattoo seems like fate for Sandra. Patti had a near death experience and is now adamant that she is going to make every second count – whatever it takes. As the two women have a chat over coffee and cake they come up with the perfect plan: a bucket list! Nothing and nobody is going to stop them from achieving their dreams and having the adventure of a lifetime.
Sandra and Patti’s enthusiasm and yearning for fun and excitement is catching and as their lives intertwine with Mary and her anxious husband, the two women are more determined than ever to let their hair down and live their best lives one hair-raising adventure at a time…
A wonderful read about renewal, healing, second chances and living life to the full – regardless of how old you are – Karen King’s The Old Gals’ Bucket List is a feel-good romp that is entertaining, inspirational and great fun! Full of wonderful characters you will become attached to, laugh out loud humour and moments that will tug at the the heartstrings, The Old Gals’ Bucket List is another top-notch page-winner from Karen King you will adore.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
The Old Gals’ Bucket List by Karen King is a perfectly charming contemporary novel that I read in just one sitting. This is a light-hearted and fun read about learning to live again. The leading characters are all about seventy and prove that you are never too old to have fun. The leading lady had been widowed earlier. Life has been on hold until she bumps into an old friend who is a cancer survivor and determined to now make her life count. “I promised myself that if I survived, I’d live life to the full, no fear, no excuses, I want to make every single day count.” This is a turning point as the pair decide to make a bucket list and then work through it. As the novel progresses, we see that growing older can still be exciting as the pair grab life by the horns. We see the ladies get their first tattoo, learn to swim and conquer many fears. “Feel the fear but do it anyway.” Life is for living and new experiences can be fun. A grown-up son tries to limit his mum, believing she is ready for a retirement home! “I’m ready to live again and you need to step back and let me do that.” Her son’s stance comes from the viewpoint of love. Another character has been living in fear after a heart attack – but seeing the fun that his sister is having, brings him out of his shell. The reader is treated to the sights and sounds of Spain. With full descriptions, we can almost ‘feel’ the heat. It is a vibrant landscape, providing may new opportunities. Good friends, good food, and a good dose of fun, The Old Gals’ Bucket List is an entertaining novel that will leave you smiling. Whatever your age – carpe diem, seize the day! I received a free copy from Rachel’s Random Resources for a blog tour. A favourable review was not required. All opinions are my own.
I received an eARC of this book from NetGalley and the publisher, for which I thank them.
“The Old Gals’ Bucket List” is by Karen King. In this book, the reader follows (mainly) two characters - reunited friends Patti and Sandra as they create a bucket list of activities they’d like to do to celebrate life and living. Some of the items are small - learning to swim - and others are bigger - going hot air ballooning. They have an IG account to show others that no matter your age, you’re never too old to feel young again. Around the 50% mark, a new character’s viewpoint is introduced, which I felt wasn’t really necessary - even though that person had just a few chapters from her point of view. I think the book could be stronger without those chapters - but I seem to be in the minority. For me, this book was okay - it was good to read about two adventurous single women of a certain age going out and living life opposed to staying home. It was also good that they rekindled their friendship. But, for me, this book just seemed too long in places and I kept wanting the story to move along faster than it did. I think that this book can give anyone ideas for how to get out of a comfort zone or rut and be adventurous - which probably is a great thing in general. 3.5 stars rounded up to 4.
The Old Gals' Bucket List by Karen King is a wonderful, heartwarming, encouraging and endearing story about learning to stand up for yourself. As I am close in age to these women, I found myself questioning some of my own decisions about my life lately after reading this book. Age is only a number and I can do almost anything at my age that I wish to do. This is a light-hearted and fun read about learning to live again as you are never too old to have fun.
Sandra unexpectedly lost her husband eight months ago. Her son was just promoted and is moving his family to another city. He wants her to sell her house and move to the city with him; moving into a retirement home. Life has been on hold until she bumps into an old friend, Patti, she used to work with but had moved away, has moved back and they ran into each other at the bus top. Patti is a cancer survivor and determined to now make her life count; and is on her way to get a tattoo. Sandra asks if she would like her to go with her for support, and she said yes. This is a turning point as the pair decides to make a bucket list and then start working through it. At the advice of Patti’s granddaughter, Kit, and with her guidance, these “old” gals record their bucket lists and their adventures in checking off items on their lists, as well as occasionally add an item or two on Instagram; thus “The Old Gals' Bucket List” begins.
We see the ladies get their first tattoo, learn to swim, fly on a plane, and conquer many other fears. It was amazing to see the changes in them, but also the people who followed them, and were inspired to join them in making a bucket list. Soon, Sandra and Patti are having new adventures, getting tattoos, tackling old fears, and finding unexpected friends. Patti’s brother, Keith, recently had a heart attack and worries it will happen again. Watching Patti and Sandra, during their visit to see him in Spain, he and his wife Mary witness the fun his sister is having, brings him out of his shell.
These old gals aren’t about to let life pass them by. They have learned that and there is still life out there, after a loss, or making it through something like cancer, or being lonely. If anyone knows how to make the most of every day, it’s this crew. A wonderfully written story, that showcases the strength, compassion and tenacity of the older generation and that it’s never too late to take a chance, try something new, age means nothing when you are looking to make a difference, you can't let your "old" age stop you from doing anything you'd like; grab life by the horns, carpe diem, seize the day and enjoy the life you deserve.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, it was lots of fun and gave me some inspiration along the way!
Sandra is a lady who is still processing grief after the sudden passing of her husband. Patti used to work with Sandra and they lost touch some time ago. The pair of them are both a little at a loose end and they decide to join forces to work through their respective bucket lists.
When they find themselves in Spain, staying with Mary and Keith (Patti's brother and sister-in-law), their lives change a little more and Mary starts to work through her own bucket list.
The three women, quite different in temperament, seize life and do things they would never have considered previously.
This was an uplifting tale of "feeling the fear and doing it anyway" which spoke to me as well, as someone who is not a million miles behind these ladies, age-wise.
A great story for women of a "certain age" but I think younger readers would get a kick out of it too and it might make them realise that just because you are a little older, that you STILL want to live your life on your own terms and you need to be listened to. I did like the conversations that Sandra had with her over-protective son, Don, as well. And there is a bit of romance too :)
When life has knocked you down, you have to find a way to pick yourself up and move forward. Sandra lost her husband 8 months ago and her son has been promoted and is moving to the city. He wants her to sell her house and move to the city with him and move into a retirement home. A friend that she used to work with but had moved away, has moved back and they ran into each other at the bus top. She has beaten cancel and is on her way to get a tattoo. Sandra asks if she would like her to go with her for support, and she said yes. They were both alone, and they reconnected, and spent time talking and getting reacquainted. They decided they wanted to create a bucket list and they did. How their lives changed when they started ticking things off from their bucket list. It was amazing to see the changes in them, but also the people who followed them, and were inspired to join them in making a bucket list. The old gals learned that you're never too old to try something new, and there is still life out there, after a loss, or making it through something like cancer, or being lonely. It is a reminder, as we all go through, that there is life and all we have to do is find it. I received an ARC from Boldwood Books through NetGalley.

‘It’s time to really live our lives!’ It’s been eight months since Sandra lost her beloved husband, and she knows something has to change. Her son wants her to sell up her home and move into a retirement apartment, close to him. But she doesn’t feel ready for that yet.
Then she bumps into her old friend Patti, heading off to get her first tattoo. Patti explains she’s beaten cancer and now she’s ready to make every second count… And – sitting down for a cuppa and a slice of cake – the women land on the perfect idea – a bucket list!
As they set out to fulfil dreams, overcome fears, and have the adventure of their lives, their lives intertwine with others who feel the same, including Mary and her anxious husband…
If anyone can help them live their best lives… it’s the old gals!
My Opinion
Karen King has written a cast of older characters and shows that they can still have a good time. A charming, easy to read novel. This was a light-hearted novel about learning to live again. The Old Gals’ Bucket List is another book that I would highly recommend.
Most of the time when I read one of the Old Gals or Old Girls, I am not only uplifted but I end up laughing out loud at the various antics. While there was a lot of heart in this one too, it was not as outrageously humorous. This is not to say it did not have its moments. Perhaps because the two protagonists were dealing with some deeply emotional changes in their lives the humour was a bit more subdued. . But rather than capitulate and just exist, the old gals both decided to live fully. Ergo, the bucket list.
They gave each other the support and strength to take risks and conquer their fears and in doing so, they became bastions for others at similar stages in their lives. That is not to say there were not hurdles, the greatest being the determination of family to bundle them in bubble wrap and “keep them safe”. In this story safe is the enemy of growing and taking chances. As they become influencers, they give others the courage to grab life. It was a motivating message.
In fact, they were have such a good time, I wanted to join them in the Costa del Sol. I bet I was not the only reader who felt that way. Five purrs and two paws up.
A delightful read I raced through. Patti and Sandra were friends many years ago. Sandra is now on her own following the loss of her husband and her son is rather protective. When he announces he is moving with work and she should move with them, her world is sent into a tailspin. She loves seeing her son and her grandchildren but doesn’t want to move from the home she loves and certainly not into a retirement complex- she is not 92! Patti comes to the rescue. She too is on her own and has just overcome a battle of a different type and is determined to live life to the full. Between them they decide to create and tick off a bucket list and record it all on Instagram. One life, live it!
What a joy of a read and a reminder to all of us that we have but one life. Grab opportunities whilst you can and never say never. Who knows what you can do if you say yes. A positive mindset is a healthy way to be. I loved the ladies and their attitude and overcoming lifelong fears spurred on by each other. A fabulous read which gets a very big five stars.
The Old Gals' Bucket List is a joyful, feel-good romp that celebrates friendship, second chances, and the kind of adventures that don’t come with an age limit. It’s the kind of book that makes you want to call your best friend and plan something wildly spontaneous—just because.
The story follows a group of older women who decide it’s time to shake things up and finally tick off the dreams they’ve been putting off. There’s laughter, a few tears, and plenty of heartwarming moments that remind you it’s never too late to live boldly. Each character brings something unique to the mix, and their bond feels genuine—like women you’d love to sit with over tea and cake.
Karen King’s writing is breezy and uplifting, with just enough emotional depth to keep things grounded. It’s perfect for fans of cozy fiction with a dash of wanderlust and a whole lot of heart.
If you’re looking for a book that’s equal parts empowering and entertaining, this one’s a lovely pick.

Thank you to NetGalley for sending me an Advance Digital copy of The Old Gals' Bucket List by Karen King in exchange for my honest review. I really enjoyed this story.
Sandra has been widowed for several months, and her son, daughter-in-law and granddaughters are concerned about her. Don, her son, has been offered a dream job in Cambridge which is hours away, and he wants Sandra to move with them. He has looked into retirement apartments and such. This all seems to be going too fast for Sandra. One day she decides to take the bus into town for a little shopping. A lady with amazing short red hair gets onto the bus and they immediately recognize each other. Sandra and Patti used to work together at the grocery store. They ended up shopping together and had a great time. They decided to get together again. The more time together they spent, the closer they got. It was like they had not missed all the years. They decided to put together a Bucket List of things to do.
This was a great story of ladies, later in life, finding that you're never too old to go out and live your life!
I love books that feature seniors as human beings who want to live and not just spend time watching TV or any other classic senior activity.
There is a sort of gap in how media often portrays seniors and how seniors are. I remember a true crime show talking about a sixty-year-old as a sweet granny. JLo is fifty-six and I do not think anyone would call her a granny. I would like to be Granny Weatherwax or Granny Ogg. This book talks about seniors who have zest for life, facing grief while going on with their life and creating their own bucket list. The rest is poignant, heartwarming, funny.
I love these ladies. I loved how they decide to live and not just be sweet old ladies. Right pace, likeable and well-rounded characters. Perfect if you want a read that will set you in a happy and relaxed mood.
It could be a ginger tea and you will appreciate the layered story that can make you smile and read. Highly recommended.
Many thanks to Boldwood Books and Rachel's Random Resources for this digital copy. All opinions are mine.
This is an uplifting novel about two women (ages 68 and 71) who decide to live life fully regardless of their circumstances. Patti has recovered from an arduous journey of cancer treatment and Sandra is emerging from her grief over losing her beloved husband. When the two friends reunite after a 20-year hiatus at a bus stop, they begin to support each other in creating and fulfilling their respective bucket lists – to take risks rather than to settle for the status quo.
Overall, the book was entertaining and inspiring…a rekindling of the adventurous spirit regardless of age. The descriptions of their travel to Spain were particularly enjoyable. My one criticism is the prose became repetitive in highlighting the issues with Patti’s brother and Sandra’s son.
My thanks to the author, the publisher, and NetGalley for the privilege of reviewing this book. The opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
3.5⭐️ rounded up to 4⭐️ Fun and enjoyable story of friendship, overcoming loss and “taking life by the horns”
Sandra is reeling over the sudden loss of her husband when her son drops the bombshell that he’s been promoted but will be moving away, but wants her to leave her home and move away with him and his young family. While on a bus journey she bumps into an old work colleague Patti who was good friend years ago before she’d moved away and they lost touch. Patti is recovering from cancer and is on her way to get a tattoo, Sandra goes along with her and over tea and cake they catch up and decide to make a bucket list of things they have been too scared to do. Over the next few months they vow to complete the bucket list and along the way find a new lease of life.
A thoroughly enjoyable, uplifting and feel good book.
With thanks to NetGalley and Boldwood books for the arc in exchange for an honest review.
I do love a book featuring older female characters living life to the full. Patti is recovering from cancer. Sandra is recently widowed and under the influence of an over caring son who wants to smother her in a bit too much cotton wool and make all her decisions for her. Old work colleagues from years before, they meet up again by chance and a close and supportive friendship is forged. Drawing up bucket lists of all the things they want to do and the fears they are determined to overcome, and sharing their progress on Instagram, together they learn how to look forward and make the most of life while they still can. Add a Spanish holiday and Patti's anxious sister in law Mary to the mix and the way is open for big decisions, growing self confidence, and a lot of fun for all three of them..
This book proves you are never too old to start a bucket list or get a tattoo. Sandra and Patti have rekindled a past friendship and become each other's biggest cheerleaders as they seek to complete a range of activities on their freshly created bucket lists from Sandra learning to swim to Patti getting on a plane for the first time. Along the way they make new friends and one of them even finds a new love. It was a charming story that really showcased the two main characters and their adventures. It is quite a simple story that touches well on some of the challenges that older people start to face and how it doesn't have to stop them living life to the fullest. It is a really pleasant read to curl up with on a rainy day with a cup of tea and a cookie. Thank to NetGalley and the publisher for opportunity to read in return for my honest opinion.
This was just the fun lighthearted book I needed to revive after reading a few heavy books. It's uplifting and inspirational. It starts off with Sandra who is a older lady and her only family living nearby are about to move away. Sandra is conflicted because she loves being able to see them all the time but she doesn't want to move with them as her son has abruptly suggested. Sandra then runs into a old friend called Patti who has beat cancer and is on her way to get a tattoo. This is where the fun starts as they come up with a bucket list that is definitely out there but achievable. I felt the excitement off the journey that this story takes you on and I was in awe of and cheering for the characters all the way through. It was a quick read for me as I finished it in one sitting because I was having a glorious time.
This is a sweet, light, quick read that was enjoyable. Anyone who has ever wished to do things, but out of fear just could not- well this story is for you. As we age we always look back and desire to fulfill our "bucket list". How many times have we heard "I wish I had done this or that". This is the journey of two old friends who reacquaint after many years. They decide to make a list of all they would like to do with their days left on earth. Why not? They push each other to do things and learn many new things about themselves. You never know what you may do when you have the support of a friend! I think anyone will enjoy this lovely book.

Thank you to NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book. This light, breezy book about two mature women, Patti and Sandra who become reacquainted as friends is a wonderful enlightening read perfect for those people who want an engaging, yet insightful read. Patti and Sandra are two mature women recovering from traumatic life experiences who vow to make the most out of their remaining years ( of which they both hope for many more, and I am sure that they will ).. i loved this book , it was lighthearted but yet very inspirational, I loved all the characters, hopefully there will be a sequel.
Such a delightful uplifting story about friendship and embracing a new outlook on life. Sandra is feeling the strain of the loss of her husband and pressure from her son to move away from her home. Along comes a long lost friend, Patti whose optimistic outlook on life lifts her spirits and encourages her to start living again. Their bucket lists are intriguing and fun to witness, their determination to do things that make them happy or challenge themselves was very entertaining. Loved the positivity that shone throughout the story and the comradeship that blossomed between the two women. Definitely made me think about what I would like to do in my life, to extract as much joy and adventures as possible. An inspiring story that was so pleasurable to read.
Patti and Sandra reconnect after working together many years ago. Patti, divorced and a cancer survivor, is determined to live life to the fullest. Sandra, mourning the loss of her husband, is dealing with her son and his family relocating due to a promotion. Both decide to make a bucket list of things they want to accomplish. With the help of Patti’s granddaughter, the two set up an Instagram account to document their progress. Heartwarming story about moving boldly into one’s future. #TheOldGalsBucketList #BoldwoodBooks #NetGalley
