The Grim Artist: a prolific serial killer who never leaves a shred of physical evidence—not even a cause of death.

There is no one better to stop him than Remnant Spiritualist Emia, one with the power to sense souls and the energy they leave behind. But when good-hearted mentee Uly tries to help by looping time, the case is tipped on its head.

Because no one can touch time without consequences. And no soul can be left unscathed.

With each new loop and every dangerous truth learned, one thing becomes clear: Uly might be the one person who stands between morality and justice. He must choose which side he’s on. And once he does, there’s no turning back.

When I started reading, I was not that excited. Considering a regular book on serial killer, I was reading indifferently. Although the cover picture had a lasting imprint on me and I confess that it made me select the book.

But, then the concept of spiritualist and remnant spiritualist emerged. I did not know when I devoured by the labyrinths of the book. Emia and Ilano are such well-developed characters. Emia's survival, her character development, her wit and dry jokes are strangely appealing. I did not know why she reminded me of a certain character in Elden Ring. Apart from voids, Soma's character is described so well. Bosses and narcissist bosses harm a lot. We often forget how to protect our spirit and almost never develop boundaries. I salute the author to discuss such a grave and denied topic in our societies.

Voids seem so real (and trust me they are but we dismiss them). From the very beginning the killings are exhausting but highly appealing. The sense of just is so strong in Ilano that I could not consider him a serial killer. Rather, he became an anti-hero. The tag "grim artist" seems so appropriate.

Now, the loops and jumps. This review will remain incomplete if I do not discuss them. They are surreal. I love the fact that body forgets what the spirit remembers. The coping models are different for Ilano and Emia. But I thought Ilano would cope better as he had magic! In the last two loops, it seemed Soma was remembering too! That would be dangerous.

Uly's first meet with Emia in the crime scene, Malki's body decoration and Emia's statement on hate and wrath are unforgettable. It is funny how both the serial killers give me a romantic vigilante vibe. The hell's red door sounded so real, I stopped reading and did a web search.

Now the cons! The Lucian dimension can be elaborated more. I was really curious about Ilano's ring's backstory but alas! not provided. The teleporting mirror, what is its origin? Emia's void-specific encounter that made her leave the job can be more toxic and layered.

Then the timing of the black expiry flower, cannibal void worshipper and deep dives enter. By the way, in the fourth loop, Emia seemed manipulating Soma's murder. Emia's fish infested private dumping spot is excellent.

It is funny to see how both serial killers know their pros and cons. So, one hides the murders while other display the same.

This book is an emotional rollercoaster for me like the love bombing phase with a narcissistic lover. Only, the end is like being with an empath lover.

This book was really surprising. The concept of souls is interesting - and it's what makes it different.

Emia works on the case of the Grim Artist, helping solve it. She's a Remnant Spiritualist and can sense souls and their energy. While doing so, she meets Uly, a rookie she will mentor. He can loop time, and this is where everything goes out of the window.

Emia's relationship with the different characters is quite complex. I honestly loved her. With each loop, we learn a bit more about her and her soul, her surroundings, and why she does what she does.

I was a bit concerned when I noticed the amount of loops in the book, it does serve a purpose for the story - maybe it was a bit long sometimes (at least for me). My heart broke a little for Emia at some point in the book when time looped again (when you read the book, you will know) and she was doing great.

Pick this book if you like to catch and understand murderers. Also, there is some romance in there. This book is worth reading, give it a go. If you can, get a paperback it might be easier to go back to a previous chapter if needed.

Remember to read the trigger warnings, this book contains a serial killer so murder is bound to happen.

I received an e-ARC of this book from the author. This review is my own and I'm leaving it voluntarily.

I thought this was a fantastic concept for a serial killer and had that element that I was looking for in this universe. The mystery worked well in the storyline and was suspenseful. I thought the artist element worked well overall and had that macabre beauty to the kills.I was engaged with what was happening with the characters and that they were endangered in this storyline. I thought the time-travel element worked with this story and loved the overall package was told. Marissa Beck does a fantastic job in writing a horror book and am excited for more from them.

thoughts 💭

this was such an interesting book! I absolutely enjoyed every minute of it. the unique storyline/plot of a serial killer. it was such a unique take.

Emia is on the case to figure out who the Grim Artist really is. The Grim Artist leaves her bots and pieces, which kind of feels like he/they are playing with her.

the different take on souls was super cool as well. it was a wonderful book and if you can, I recommend picking up a copy when it is released 😊

This was an interesting read. The concept of Souls in this story was really cool. This isn't a thriller really since you learn who the "bad guy" is early on but the time loop aspect of this story takes things to a deeper level and makes the story very interesting and keeps you on your toes on what will happen next
