I have a lot of siblings (somewhere I lost count but I think there was more than could be numbered on one hand) and being one of the young padawans I was subjected to Star Wars marathons, on a regular basis. If you've read any of my books you'll see there is often a reference to said movies as a small homage to my upbringing. May the force be with you and all that jazz.
I started writing when I realized I didn't want to grow up not believing in magic, or not believing in creatures everyone else said didn't exist. That being said, I have never seen a fairy, unicorn or dragon. I had a neighbour who swore they fed the leprechauns in their garden, but I never caught the little buggers no matter how long I lay in wait. (And consequently had to help the neighbours plant new flowers to replace those I killed waiting for the leprechauns to show their faces.)
Along the way, I found my husband who is the rock that keeps me from floating away into my dreams, and we have a little boy who is the centre of our world. Living on a farm keeps us busy (as if the writing wasn't enough) and I have more than my share of stories about wrestling with cows, helping birth calves and ending up in the creek during the process, falling in the mud (we'll call it mud but we all know that on a farm, mud is rarely mud) and chasing escaped livestock in the hopes the four legged convicts don't make it to the highway.
I've taken up archery, and the goal is to move into horseback archery in time (you know, when I can hit the target on a consistent basis) and when no one is looking, I love to bake (this doesn't happen often as it's hard to keep the sweet treats in stock with two boys in the house.)
As to what's coming next for me? More stories (since those never stop inside my head, I might as well share them with all of you!) and more adventures. Pretty much, when the fancy strikes, I'll jump on it. Leap before you look I'm sure that motto was created for me.
Or was that . . . think big and dream bigger, ready, set, pull the trigger . . . yeah. That one is a good one too. But only if you have a gun. And are hunting elephants. Which is not cool because of so many reasons. Let's stick with the first one with an addendum.
Leap before you look and let your dreams carry you on their wings. And that, my friends, is me in a nutshell.

The first half was good and kept me interested but then it quickly came to a point where certain elements felt overused and redundant. It took away from the story and enjoyment rather than adding to it.
The best parts about this book would’ve been that she’s 29 and the teacher x student trope but even that felt like it happened in name only. There was hardly any teaching going on and the fmc behaved like she was 20. And the academy setting was all over the place. There wasn’t any clear ground or setting which felt messy.
The villain felt very cartoonish and cliche. It was also a little too predictable for me. Just overall underwhelming. I’m disappointed because I really had such amazing expectations from this.

This started off well with an intriguing premise but as the story progressed it slowed down and got repetitive.
This reads very YA which is not necessarily a bad thing but what I don't understand is why the author decided to create an older FMC only for her to act childlike. Her maturity doesn’t seem to match her age and some of her actions were immature that I forgot she was 29 not 15.
There’s also a swearing ban throughout this book which didn’t help matters. It's hard to take anyone seriously when they are constantly saying fruck and sheet. Both these words were so overused that it got unfunny fast.
Romance had potential being slow burn, enemies to lovers, professor X student but fell flat. Also there’s a love triangle situation going on which I'm not a big fan of.
Ultimately this wasn’t for me. I think maybe a younger audience looking for an easy read might appreciate this but for me it was too cheesy and predictable with insufficient character development.

If I had a nickel for every time I read a book where one of the characters (and possible love interests) was named Liam O'Connor at the same time, I'd have two nickles.
I started the Providence Falls series earlier this month, currently reading book two, so you can imagine my surprise when a character with the exact same name appeared in Neverthorn. O'Connor multiverse confirmed.
What's funny is that you could probably plop this Liam into that other world or vice versa, and they'd do just fine.
Neverthorn reminded me of The Elder Scrolls games immediately because of the glossary at the start. Like Dwimmer (a person with magic) was giving Dwemer. And Daygon being Harlow's last name made me think of the Daedric Prince Dagon...I know, my mind...
I was also getting strong Harry Potter vibes from this, at least during the first half, it was a bit jarring. I know JKR doesn't hold the monopoly on magical academies with different houses, but I think the parallels are kinda unavoidable for anyone who tries to write the same concept after her.
On the other hand, if you're looking for something like HP that isn't HP, Neverthorn is the book for you.
It took me a while to get into because of that, but I did end up really liking the story by the end.
Something that bugged me though, was the fact that Harlow was 29, but she acted so much younger. That, on top of the swearing ban made this feel like a YA read instead of NA. And I love YA, that's not the problem, she just rarely acted her age. It was as if she was barely older than the oldest students at the academy (not counting the rest of House Phoenix).
Honestly, Harlow could've been 19 and it wouldn't have changed the story much, she'd still be a drop out forced to return, and could still be among the oldest students so they'd look to her for guidance, and her behavior would be more age accurate. While we're at it, Typhon doesn't act 32 either, I'm just saying.
The romance didn't work for me either, at least not the one with Typhon, I'm not sensing any chemistry there. Liam on the other hand...I hated that he would only pop in and out on certain occasions (like when Harlow needed some information, or needed help with finding her Quirk, where are the bonding moments?) the man deserves a fighting chance!! Hopefully he'll get one in book two.
But everything else, I loved. Especially the worldbuilding and magic system, and one lovely little trash panda.
Then there was Harlow's protectiveness over her adoptive sister and her new friends, and even strangers (like the wraith). What's up with that wraith thing, by the way? I hope we'll get to find out. I have a ~sneaking suspicion~ after a certain someone said something.
I'd love to find out more about Nocta too, he's the most intriguing character to me. I think it would be super interesting if .
Neverthorn ended on a cliffhanger (kinda), and I wish the next book wasn't coming out all the way in July, but I also don't mind waiting that long.

Neverthorn dropout turned thief, Harlow, just shy of 30 years old, gets coerced into going back to the academy as a student. She never wanted to go back there, especially not to be part of a has-been bunch of former student misfits that all the other houses seem to depise and look down upon. But there is a dark threatening presence and a prophecy that can not be ignored.
Rival houses, magic, secrets - sooooo many secrets, mysteries, near death events, unlocking powers, and found family. Who and what can be trusted?
Love the twists, especially the cliffhanger ending/epilogue!
There's a good amount of humor throughout, and Harlow's character stays pretty consistent. How the relationships develop and evolve, particularly with House Phoenix, was heartening.
The book also left you guessing with the possible love/romantic interests, although via slow slow slow simmer. It is not yet resolved.
"He was everything dark and delicious, but there was an edge of desperation . . . of a shared suffering that made it painfully beautiful." (Ch 44)
There were several things left unresolved... to be continued within the rest of the series.

Book Review: Neverthorn
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
If you love dark academia, magical misfits, slow-burn romance, and older badass heroines with a heart of gold, you need to read Neverthorn.
We follow Harlow, a 29 year old magic school dropout turned enchanted jewel thief, who’s been hiding from a traumatic past while fiercely protecting a group of runaway teens, including Opie her found family, her heart. When she’s suddenly dragged back to the magical school she barely survived, Harlow is forced to face old wounds, a steamy brooding ex-classmate named Typhon (yes, it’s giving enemies to lovers), and a prophecy that could change everything.
Harlow is everything I want in a heroine, sarcastic, emotionally layered, and fiercely loyal. Her trauma runs deep, but so does her strength. Her voice hooked me from page one, and I couldn’t stop reading. (Also, her rooftop scene? Iconic. Later, suckers. 😂)
✨ What I loved:
• The found family vibes are STRONG. House Phoenix is full of lovable weirdos and heartfelt moments.
• The world-building is immersive, vibrant, and a little gritty.
• The banter? Top tier. I was laughing during the most serious scenes thanks to a hilariously over the top school wide swearing ban (yes, “fruck” and “sheet” made frequent appearances).
• The friendships, especially the sister like bond between Harlow and Opie added so much heart to the story.
• Typhon is the ultimate grumpy, morally gray, emotionally repressed love interest. The tension between him and Harlow? Chef’s kiss.
⚡️Things to note:
• If you’re craving romance, it’s a slow burn that simmers, but doesn’t fully ignite (yet). The tension is real though, and the love triangle setup is chef’s kiss drama.
• Some moments were a little predictable, but honestly? Didn’t take away from the fun.
• The swearing gag might not be everyone’s favorite, but it added charm for me.
The twist near the end had me yelling, literally jaw on the floor. I need book two ASAP. This was such a wild, entertaining, emotionally satisfying read that I’m still thinking about. If you like dark academic fantasy with a sharp edge and characters that feel real, Neverthorn delivers. Go read it, you won’t regret it.

I have to start off by saying I absolutely adored Harlow as the FMC. She’s fiery, bold, and never afraid to speak her mind, while still being deeply caring and loyal to the people around her. That balance made her such a compelling character to follow.
This book delivers found family in the absolute best way. The little group Harlow becomes a part of at Neverthorn is wild, chaotic, and a little unhinged, but they’re also fiercely loyal and work together so well. I loved every interaction between them, and honestly, I’d read a spin-off featuring any one of them.
The plot was plotting, with a fast-paced, intense storyline full of high-stakes moments that kept me turning the pages. Just when I thought I had things figured out, the ending threw a twist I did not see coming. Now I’m dying for the next book.
If you loved Harry Potter, this is like HP on steroids. Darker, grittier, and packed with magic, mystery, and a whole lot of attitude.
If you love strong heroines, found family dynamics, and stories that keep you guessing, Neverthorn needs to be on your list.

OH MY GOODNESS this book was a ride. If you love dark academia, magic, and a sprinkle of chaos, this one’s for you. It honestly gave me adult Harry Potter vibes. The FMC is 29 and gets thrown back into school, which I thought was hilarious but also so iconic 😆
The worldbuilding was chef’s kiss. The lore and magic system were so detailed but never overwhelming. I was fascinated the whole way through. And yes… there are hot professors, which automatically adds to the ✨spice potential✨. The humor was on point too, and the creative swear words had me cackling. Plus, Harlow was a total badass. She's funny, clever, and has just the right amount of attitude.

In the words of Harlow, holy sheet this was so good!
Nevermore had me on my toes the entire time, I had no idea who to trust, what was going to happen next. The secrets just kept being exposed until the very end, and that epilogue twist!! Definitely saw part of it coming but definitely wasn’t prepared for a certain character’s possible villian era.
If you like a book where the underdogs come out on top, quirky characters, the best found family, interesting ruin magic with a fun twist on quirks you’ll love this book! Did I mention there is also a trash panda familiar that is absolutely hilarious and lightens the mood throughout the whole book.
This gives enemies to lovers a whole new light. The love interest you want to trust may be the ultimate betrayer, and the love interest you can’t help but love is still also full of secrets. The slow burn is painful in this book, but I appreciated that this focused more on the fantasy aspect, but still gave that delicious tension we all know and love.
Neverthorn is a ruthless academy where only the best succeed, but what happens when you’re set up to fail from the very start? Nevermore had me on my toes the entire time, I had no idea who to trust, what was going to happen next. The secrets just kept being exposed until the very end, and that epilogue twist!! Definitely saw part of it coming but definitely wasn’t prepared for a certain character’s possible villian era.
If you like a book where the underdogs come out on top, quirky characters, the best found family, interesting ruin magic with a fun twist on quirks you’ll love this book! Did I mention there is also a trash panda familiar that is absolutely hilarious and lightens the mood throughout the whole book.
This gives enemies to lovers a whole new light. The love interest you want to trust may be the ultimate betrayer, and the love interest you can’t help but love is still also full of secrets. The slow burn is painful in this book, but I appreciated that this focused more on the fantasy aspect, but still gave that delicious tension we all know and love.
Neverthorn is a ruthless academy where only the best succeed, but what happens when you’re set up to fail from the very start? One thing you gotta know about Shannon Mayer is she’s always going to SERVE.
She loves to write a mouthy badass mature FMC and I love her for it.
She also always gives us the best animal besties, this time it’s a cheeky talking trash panda and I can’t get enough.
If you’re all grown up but Goblet of Fire was your favorite Harry Potter book when you were young. Then this is the book for you!
This one is full of adventure and self discovery. So excited for book 2!

I loved this book! It had me feeling all the feels, nostalgia while also giving us a fresh take on a magical academia with tons of chaos. I’m a chaos queen and Neverthorn delivered. I was (and still am) CONSTANTLY questioning who’s the villain. The steamy tension between Harlow and Typhon and his possessive nature really hooked me. The magic, the rune casting, the world building — I loved it all. I can’t wait for the next book!

This isn't your typical coming-of-age fantasy: it’s about coming into your own later in life, when everyone (including yourself) has already written you off. And I loved that.
Harlow Daygon dropped out of school and vanished when she was young after her mother's death. Now, she's nearly thirty, somewhat magically inept, and more comfortable stealing than saving the world. So when she’s dragged back to Neverthorn Academy to train because she might be the prophesied hero (alongside seven other washed-up classmates) it feels more like a punishment than destiny. She has a life and she's happy in it, but they take her adopted sister and she has to follow to protect her. What follows is an unexpectedly heartfelt journey full of messy friendship dynamics, slow-burning romance, and the aching, real question of whether people like Harlow can ever truly change the narrative written for them.
This book leans hard into the tropes I love: second chances, reluctant heroes, and a cast of lovable misfits, and does it with charm. The tone is playful and sometimes downright silly (talking raccoon, anyone?), but it doesn’t undermine the more serious themes. Mayer handles topics like mental health, trauma/grief, and the weight of past mistakes with nuance. The result is a story that feels light on its feet but lands emotionally when it matters most.
I was especially drawn to the way the characters, many of them older and rough around the edges, are given space to grow. They’re not plucky teens, they’re adults being asked to try one more time in a school with rules that make them roll their eyes. It gives the story a grounded, almost thoughtful undertone beneath the mysteries. And while there's plenty of banter and sharp dialogue, it’s the quieter emotional moments that stuck with me.
Also? The romance is so good. Tension, vulnerability, and just the right amount of slow burn. There's history and misunderstandings that neither wants to talk about. Add in a dark academia backdrop, a mysterious villain threat who miiiight have a link to our heroine, and some compelling threads left to unravel, and I was completely hooked.
Neverthorn is fun, heartfelt, and full of promise. If you love fantasy with found family vibes, healing arcs, and chaotic protagonists who are trying (and failing, and trying again), this one’s absolutely worth picking up. I’m already impatient for book two!

Shannon, you absolute frucking genius! I don’t know how you continue to write one banger after another but you never miss! Neverthorn is for those of us past school age, still wishing a teacher showed up to tell us we were magical and whisk us off to a magical realm. This book allows you to step into that reality! There is endlessly funny dialogue, a talking raccoon, found family, school houses, Quirks (special individual abilities), a broodily hot professor and a boy-next-door one, and of course a villain to conquer. If you’re new to Shannon’s writing, I promise you will absolutely devour this book and then want to immediately dive into the rest of her series!

Harlow attended Neverthorn at 16 years old and promptly left after being treated terribly and her mother passing. Now at 29, she’s living a life of thievery in the Unlit (human) world to sustain the runaway children she cares for. That is until she’s captured mid job and given no choice but to return to Neverthorn in the Dwimmer (magical) world. Upon arrival, she realizes the house she was initially placed in was wrong and she’s actually in a much more powerful (previously removed) house. Per an old prophecy, it’s up to Harlow and her new housemates to defeat the ever present bad guy, Nocta.
I loved the found family aspect of Harlow’s house. Her friendship with Fable was the strongest but each of the housemates looked to her and I think it gave her a sense of purpose and caring she had been lacking.
The rune gag preventing Harlow and her house from cursing was HILARIOUS! It carried through the entire book and made me laugh every time - pretty much standard for any Shannon book!
With the way Neverthorn ended I absolutely cannot wait for the next book! Poor Opie 🥺🥺

I had high hopes for this one—it was advertised as dark academia with adult characters (30+), a hot-as-sin professor, and juicy secrets. Unfortunately… it didn’t deliver on any of that, except for maybe the Hogwarts vibes.
I did absolutely enjoy the magical school setting—with its different houses, powers, and magic systems. It was probably the second-best part of the book… right after the trash-talking panda, Bandit. I loved Bandit!!
Now, what didn’t work:
Romance? Nope. It was supposed to be a slow burn, but there was no build-up, no tension, and no chemistry between the supposed love interests. The love triangle felt completely unnecessary.
Adult characters? Not really. They acted worse than teenagers the entire time.
Plot & twists? Super predictable. I saw everything coming from miles away. All the “secrets” were revealed immediately, and honestly, there weren’t any real secrets at all. Plus, by the end, none of the major questions raised throughout the book were answered—which made the whole story feel kind of pointless.
Ending? It felt like there was supposed to be a big twist, but it just… fell flat. I kept waiting for something to happen, and it never did.
Will I read book 2? Maybe—if I have the free time.

Nope. Absolutely not. Almost DNF’d when they made her, at 29, put on a school uniform, then actually did DNF after she walked into her first “class” and got detention. At 29 years old. Give me a break. If you went back to a school for magic to train for something like war or (gag me) “saving the world” at almost 30 years old, you wouldn’t be treated like teenagers. It would be like private training and testing. Maybe a university situation. Not high school. Oh, ac the round put in her so she couldn’t swear? Absolutely stupid. No thank you. This book is far too childish and immature for the premise intended.

First off, thank you to Penguin Michael Joseph for sending me a copy of this book before release for an honest review. So as always here we go.
What to expect in this
* Magical Academy
* The Chosen ones
* Enemies to lovers
* Secrets
* Professor x student
* She doesn’t play by the rules
* Houses
* Why did the villain become the villain?
Now, I think this book has some really interesting aspects. I did enjoy the mystery behind why Nocta became the villain and what the school is hiding.
I did however think that there was a lot of repetitive aspects and also think that the intended serious moments were dulled by the way the characters act.
I will say on a positive note, this book has a simple writing style that makes you read 100 pages without even realising it. I also really liked the mystery and secrets that we still don’t have answers too. I also found the epilogue to be really intriguing.
Harlow is also a fiery character which I love in FMCs.
Whether I will continue the series is a maybe. I do think many people will enjoy this book though, but not particularly me.

I really enjoyed this book, I think fans of Harry Potter will like this. You have a magic school , twists and turns, battles, a talking racoon. It reads very much as a first book of a series a lot of background and building. I think the second will be really good.

I really was not expecting much from this book, but I was so impressed and surprised. I actually laughed a lot and really loved the FMC, Harlow. I'm obsessed with her new found family in the House of Phoenix and actually appreciated reading about an older age group instead of a 18 year old lol. I definitely recommend this one!

Did I love this? No. Did I hate it? Also no. For me it dropped the ball on a lot of things.
First this was described as a professor-hot-as-sin and professor-used-to-be-a-mean-girl challenge and I’ll say it did not meet those expectations. There is a hot professor and a mean professor, that’s about it.
And a slow burn romance? Uh was the fire even started?? There are small moments between Harlow (FMC) and two professors, Typhon and Liam, but nothing happens..at all. A kiss here or there. But nothing happens romance. There’s a jealous scene where Harlow catches Typhon with his shirt open close to another girl and I kept thinking “this is it!” Nope. She went back to bed with her talking raccoon pet.
There were tons of Easter eggs and hints at things throughout the book so none of the twists were actually surprises. The FMC hears a voice she recognizes or remembers something from her past or sees something. It was too obvious. Let us figure things out with the FMC or at least make the twists less obvious.
The best part of the book was Bandit, the talking raccoon, and Phyllis, the 60 year old matron with a secret past. I wanted more from them. And less of the curse gagging rune. No more frucks or asterisk or sheets, please. I beg of you.
I also felt like there was a lot happening and nothing was actually answered. The ending left me with way more questions than answers. And then there was the whole Roman gods mythology being randomly thrown in? Oh and an Arthurian legend too? It felt like too much in one book.
But I’m intrigued and will probably read book 2. For a palate cleanser.

Harlowe is an incredible lead character. I love her dry humor, I love her determination, I love her humility, and I especially love how fiercely she protects those she loves. I am so excited to see how she blossoms into her power. In fact, I'm excited to see how ALL of her friends blossom into their powers!
I think the story was written so well, unique yet had faint vibes of Harry Potter and Dr. Strange. While the romance between Typhon and Harlowe was not a prominent storyline, I still liked the chemistry they had. And I liked the additional love triangle with Liam, though, again, not a big part of the story by any means. The magic and the combat, all of the action in the story was fascinating, and there were moments where I literally could not walk away from it. I felt suspicious of so many characters, questioning who is truly trustworthy and who's not. By the end of it, I had so many questions and theories, and now I have to wait for book 2 to see if they get answered 😆 Great twist at the end too, though I wasn't totally shocked by it!

I've been in an off and on reading slump for about the last 2 months, and this is the first book I've read since it started that I woke up excited to keep reading!

New book, new series, another ending that left us hollering...OMG a thousand times. LOL!
Welcome to Neverthorn Academy, the place where Harlow is brought back to...rather unwillingly to say the least. LOL! She’s been an “acquierer” of rare items since leaving the Academy the first time, but things have changed and now she’s needed...whether she likes it or not.
This story is so gripping you’re going to be hard-pressed to put it down. Harlow is quite the character. There were moments when she runs her mouth, and we couldn’t help shaking our head...thinking...why Harlow? Why? LOL! Of course, the author has quite the sense of humor when it comes to the swearing. You’ll be laughing quite a bit as you read this book.
There is tension, danger, giant egos (some quick...grab a pin! These inflated balloons need popping! LOL!), slow-burn tension, and an ending that...(note above) will have you raving for more. This book was a blast to read and we can’t wait for more!

I loved this. How am I going to wait a whole year for the next book?
The whole concept of this book is incredible. Of course I have read books with the same storyline of attending school and preparing for war. But what makes this book special is that it’s about a group who is brought *back* to school. Reading about a main character who’s the same age as me? Fruck yes.
Did I find some characteristic traits about Harlow annoying, such as running away from her problems? And I mean that in the literal sense, she ran away…. Again, fruck yes. But did I also love her ruthless behavior, foul mouth, and immaturity around friends? Fruck yes.
I have so many freaking theories I want to, no, that I NEED to share with someone. Hit the add button and we can chat it up.

If you love all things fantasy romance with dark academia, this is a must read!
I loved the story and the author's writing. I was fully engaged in the book and couldn't put it down!
The characters are great! They're developed and they each pack a punch. I especially loved the FMC, Harlow, and her never quit attitude. She will find a way to make it happen regardless of the consequences. She also is part of House Phoenix, which is truly meaningful. The found family is brilliantly done (especially as one of my favorite tropes). I also loved the tension with Typon orrr professor :) Seriously, there are so many layers to the characters that it makes a wonderfully complex story.
The other piece I truly love is the world building and magic system! They're fully developed and explained so nothing is left to chance. Everything has meaning! I've read some fantasy of late that hasn't fully built the world or the magic and I've been left to question...this book does not do that! It's detailed and has everything that you could love about romantasy.
Seriously, I can't wait for book 2!

Great premise, but this just didn’t work at all for me. It’s all kind of convoluted so I’ll just list the main reasons and hope they make sense.
1. The biggest problem is that we have a 29 year old FMC who is shoved back into a high school type academy and suddenly her personality becomes that of a 15 year old! Not physically though, she just acts like one throughout the entire story! BUT… one can’t forget she is TWENTY NINE! It does not work AT all. Everything about the story screams YA yet it isn’t…. Kinda. The professors even treat her and her friends like children. They don’t tell her anything, talk to her like she is a high schooler and she responds in kind. It is infuriating! If the author had made her 19 in high school again, maybe. But as it is, the entire storyline is a mess. She is a grown adult who, by the author’s own words has been living and taking care of herself for over 10 years, is canny and street-smart and can do pretty awesome, self-learned magic. But, she weirdly acts and is treated just like a 15 year old the minute she hits that academy… GAH!!!
2. The “romance” part of the story really doesn’t work. There just isn’t any chemistry at all between the two main characters. That, mostly I believe, is because they are never given any page time to actually get to know each other and develop any kind of good relationship aside from teacher/student (He is a professor at the school). Anytime Typhon (MMC) is on page, he is hard, unyielding and borderline rude to her… Unless he is suddenly stroking her face or something equally odd.
3. We are never given even a page bit of background or understanding in what is actually going on! The entire book is a mess of mysteries that never get any clearer and one is left as much in the dark closing the last page as they were when they turned the first page. We need at least some forward movement in uncovering something!
*sigh* Aw well, can’t win them all…

💭 My thoughts:
This one reawakened the Potterhead in me and brought me so much comfort and nostalgia 😍🥹! I love that most of the characters are adults as well, which makes it a lot easier for me to relate to them and understand their banters. The humour in this is incredible, and could only be done so due to the age of the characters.
The narrative started off slow at first, but I got insanely hooked a few chapters in and had more trouble finding time to read it than getting through it 🙌🏻.
I absolutely adore Harlow — she’s sassy but classy as a thirty-year old, as well as an inspiration for the other students at Neverthorn Academy. She may be older than them, but her protective nature and experience in leadership shines through, making her a role model that the other characters look up to 🩷.
The other characters were well written too, especially Typhon, Opie and Ellie. I found myself rooting for them often 🥹🫶🏻. Nocta was intriguing; I want to know more about him in book 2!
Overall this was a 5-star read and one you don’t want to miss if you’re craving something with Harry Potter vibes but on the mature side! 🥰

I finished reading Neverthorn and… wow. Instant 5 stars! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Those last few chapters—with that twist!? OMG. Nooo I didn’t see that coming 🫣😭 I need the second book ASAP! I’m dying to know what happens next. 🤩
I just need a moment to digest everything and pick my jaw up off the floor. 😂
From the very beginning, I fell in love with the main character's personality. She was so fun, easygoing, and refreshing. This line sold me right away:
“I wish I could stay, but I have got people to see and all…” With a grin, I leap from the edge of the roof, spinning in mid-air so I could face them as I fell, both middle fingers extended.” -“ Later suckers “ 😂
Like what!? 😂 She was so iconic from the very start -smart, resilient, and unapologetically bold. I loved how she never held back, rarely played by the rules, and how fiercely she protected the ones she loved. She went through so much, yet she always put others first. Her decision were made around protecting the ones she loved.
I especially adored the sister-like bond between Opie and Harlow. Their friendship felt so genuine and deep and it brought so much emotional depth to the story.. Yes, Harlow definitely needed to learn to be less overprotective of Opie, but considering what she went through herself at that school when she was younger, I completely understand her hesitation and learning to trust.
The world-building was incredible -vibrant, vivid, and totally immersive. The writing was perfect: easy to follow, fast-paced, and packed with banter. I loved how the magic system was described. If you enjoy dark academia, urban fantasy, and magical school vibes, this one is definitely for you. I even got some Hagwards (adult Hogwarts?) vibes from it 😂🤩
Another standout element? The swearing gag during Harlow’s time at Neverthorn 😂 It made me laugh out loud more than once — especially when it happened during really serious moments. I wish I could share some of the quotes here, but I don’t want to spoil the banter for you. Just know that it was so good.
And then there was Typhon... WOW. A true enemies to lovers to enemies again situation? 👀 You'll have to read it yourself and decide. But wow—he was broody, dark haired, very tall, broad shouldered, and handsome 😮💨🔥. There was so much tension between him and Harlow, and the sloooowww burn between them was just perfection. He brought the drama and the intensity. I loved his character and seeing the warmer, protective side of him 🖤
On the opposite side, there was Liam, all sweet, golden retriever energy, with a great personality and the kind of friend everyone needs. But there's definitely potential for maybe something more... hmm, we’ll see. Still, I really want things to work out between Typhon and Harlow, and I’m so looking forward to seeing what unravels in the second book, especially after that revelation at the end! 👀🫣
I loved the contrast between the two guys and how each brought something unique to Harlow’s story.
I also really appreciated the family theme in this book. It was so well executed, and I’m genuinely happy that Harlow finally found the support, love, and true friendship she deserved. She made so many amazing friends there in Neverthorn! That made my heart so warm. ❤️
