"I'm sure everything is fine, but it's better to be safe than sorry." The Valdez family took that phrase to a level that might as well be in the stratosphere.
Prepare for unparalleled thrills as you dive into these three novellas by Traci Hunter Abramson—they are not messing around! If you're a fan of suspense, family ties, and connections into her other series (you're going to want to read them all-and you really should!) then you'll love this collection!
The Valdez family is a favorite of mine. Unable to have kids, they grow together and have one of the most beautiful found family tropes ever written! You won't be disappointed picking this one up!
Hunted – A young girl on the run from her abusive stepfather. A cabin full of horrifying secrets. A desperate escape into the forest. The tension in this one will keep you glued.
Secrets of St. Augustine – Left behind at her boarding school, Layla stumbles onto a deadly plot that catapults her into a chilling game of survival.
Shadows of Trust – Sophie and Mason’s lives are already grim, but when their aunt’s drug dealer sets his sights on their trust fund, the danger escalates fast. FBI agent Doug Valdez and his wife Jill step in, proving once again that family is chosen as much as it is given.
Two of these novellas have been published before in other collections, but this is the first time they’re packaged together—plus, it brings us a brand-new story featuring the Valdez family (one of my all-time favorites in Traci’s series!). Traci is an absolute mastermind of weaving connections across her books—her Easter eggs and character crossovers are brilliant, and I am here for ALL OF IT!
I’ll always recommend Traci’s books with the highest of recommendations because they are, quite simply, excellent.
Shadows of Trust releases August 19, 2025. Don’t miss this one!
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Content/Trigger Warnings: Suspense, mild peril/violence, kidnappings, escapes, a couple unable to conceive, romance-kisses only.

-This collection of suspense stories is worth reading. I thoroughly enjoyed the heart-beating thrilling suspense, mystery, family ties, and connections into other series by Traci Abramson. Each story is beautifully filled with brave and heroic characters, and with important themes of courage, love, loyalty, and found family! They definitely are worth the time, attention, and read!🙌🏻📚❤️

•Content: suspense, mild peril/ violence, secret plotting, kidnappings, drug addiction, orphans, escapes, a couple unable to conceive, no language, kisses only.
These novellas are completely fantastic! They all center on Doug Valdez, an FBI agent in Traci Hunter Abrahmsons world in her Saint Squad series. The novellas tell the story of how Doug and his wife Jill meets each one of their daughters. As someone who is living some of the experiences that Traci writes about, I felt that she portrayed instant and unexpected parenthood to older kids very well. Each story was gripping and had enough suspense to keep me at the edge of my seat. Loved all 3!
Thank you to the publisher for the advance copy of this book. A review was not required.
If you’ve read Traci’s Undercurrents, Saint Squad or Guardians series, Doug Valdez will be familiar to you. This collection of novellas is about him and his family. I’ve actually read (and loved!) the first two before, in collections with other authors, but I’ve love having them in the same book, and I loved the third novella as much as the other two! Each one is full of the suspense that Traci is known for, and I love every minute of it! It was hard to put this book down! I really hope this isn’t the last we see of Doug, Jill, and their family! Maybe a spinoff series when the kids grow up?
I received an advanced copy from the publisher. All thoughts and opinions are my own
Traci Hunter Abramson has once again proven her talent for weaving suspenseful, heartfelt stories with her novella collection Shadows of Trust. All of these stories feature Agent Doug Valdez and his wife, Jill. Doug is a favorite side character in the Undercurrent, Saint Squad, Guardian series.
Hunted — Captures the raw terror of a young girl trying to escape an abusive stepfather who wants her dead because she knows too much of his business. When she escapes and comes to a cabin it just happens to be occupied by an FBI agent and his wife, who take her in. This story is full of suspense as the FBI tries to use the information the young girl has given them to stop a mass shooting.
Secrets of St. Augustine — FBI Special Agent Doug Valdez is in France looking for money launderers involving an exclusive prep school when one of the students, Layla, discovers there's a plot to kill her. Thankfully, she's able to escape and Agent Valdez is there to help her. Thus begins a super suspenseful game of cat and mouse in France.
Shadows of Trust — We meet teenager Sophie and her younger brother Mason. Their situation is both chilling and beyond sad, but what makes this novella especially moving is the parallel story of FBI agent Doug Valdez and his wife, Jill. Their yearning for family and willingness to open their hearts to two children in need brings warmth and hope to a story filled with danger.
Two of these novellas have been published in multi-author collections, but I love that now they're together with a brand-new story. You don't need to read any of the author's other books to enjoy this collection. Each of the three stories delivers edge-of-your-seat tension while never losing focus on the relationships between the characters.
I received a copy from the publisher. All opinions in this review are my own.
Imagine savoring the first bite of your favorite comfort food- ooey gooey cheese melting in your mouth, or fresh from the fryer crispiness creating the most satisfying crunch. Whatever your comfort food is, this book is the Traci literary equivalent! It’s a delectable mix of favorite old characters, signature Traci suspense, and found family, all wrapped up in three stories.
You can pick this one up independently and enjoy it, but if you’re a diehard Traci fan, know that this book continues Doug and Jill’s story from the Undercurrents series and Covert Ops. The three novellas are placed in chronological order, each one building on the next as Doug and Jill take an unexpected path to bringing children into their family. It’s a validating storyline for anyone who has navigated the complexities of infertility or just appreciates reading about found family. The four kids in the book are well-written, and it’s impressive the resilience they have despite their rather dismal life circumstances.
What I loved about this book was how seamlessly the three stories fit together. You can snack on any one the stories as stand alones, or you can binge the whole book and enjoy the cohesiveness of them all. Also, the suspense was top notch for all of them! We’ve got terrorist plots, embezzlement, kidnappings, the whole deal. I was locked in from the first page!
Thank you, Traci, for this lovely collection with all of Jill and Doug’s stories in one place. Highly recommend!
The Brief: Doug and Jill are unable to have children of their own, but children begin to come to them in unexpected ways and danger follows them.
The Debrief: We meet Doug and Jill in a previous series that is AMAZING! This still stands alone. All three novellas center around a child escaping bad guys, dodging bullets, avoiding being drugged, and basically neglected. My heart was hurting for each child and the reality that others suffer similarly around the world. @traciabramson kept me on my toes with adventure and one or two jump scares. I also enjoyed the faith elements that wove through all three stories.
I LOVE Doug! He’s always been my favorite. Undercover, FBI, Homeland Security? Sign me up for all of it. A swoony protector and such a great husband. The little “I really love you right nows” and their confident support of each other was the sweetest. The humor and banter kept things balanced and my heart happy. Doug and Jill forever ❤️
The Rhyme: Even when her last hope for a pregnancy fades, Jill longs for children to be in their home. Children who are desperate for love come into their life and Doug will protect them and make them their own.
This is three novellas written as a series. Each could stand on its own but together they make a full set and a great read. The suspense was intense and captivating. I am glad the author didn’t try to make the individual stories longer in order to get a full novel as the length of each was just right. Exciting read.
This i\s a series of longer novellas about Doug Valdez and his wife Jill. The childless couple always wanted a family.
HUNTED
A cabin in the woods holds secrets, and Reagan knows them. Reagan finds herself running for her life and away from her stepfather. Reagan doesn't trust easily after the kind of environment she has lived in.
SECRETS OF ST AUGUSTINE
Layla attends a private school for girls. While ever.yone is away on a school break, and she stays behind because she has nowhere else to go, she hears a conversation that wasn't meant for her to hear. She must get away before they can find her. She finds an unlocked vehicle and climbs inside.
SHADOWS OF TRUST
Sophie and her younger brother Mason lived with their grandmother until she had to go to a care home. They live with Aunt Hillary, who is addicted to drugs. Sophie gets creative in trying to feed and care for her brother Mason. What she doesn't know is someone is watching and waiting in the shadows.
Two of the stories were in other books that I have read by Traci which doesn’t seem fair to pay for a book and find out I’ve already paid for two of the stories
I am a fan of Tracy Hunter Abramson and have read the vast majority of her books. This book contains three suspense novellas. Abramson often uses crossovers in her stories showing that her different series exist in the same world. For example a senator who later becomes the President appears in several of her novels. The tie together for these novellas are they feature Doug and Jill Valdez. Doug is an FBI agent and his wife is a second grade teacher. They are a childless couple and I know them from reading the author’s Saint Squad series.
Hunted: Jill and Doug are at a cabin in the woods when a young teen, Reagan, stumbles out of the trees. She is fleeing for her life and has information about an attack that is going to happen in Washington DC.
Secrets of St. Augustine: Jill and Doug are technically on vacation in France with their adopted daughter Reagan. But Doug makes time to check out a boarding school where there is suspicion of money laundering. Layla, a student there, hasn’t heard from grandmother in over a year. She hears the headmaster making plans that threaten her. She stows away in the back of Doug’s car. Of course he and the family offer help.
Shadows of Trust: The Valdez’s are now in Washington DC and they get to know two orphan siblings. The boy is a student of Jill’s and his sister is a classmate of Layla’s. When there is a kidnapping attempt on the boy, Jill and Doug come to the rescue again.
I found all of the stories interesting and exciting. I have read Hunted and Secrets of St. Augustine in previously published anthologies. Hunted in “Twisted Fate” (06-2014) and Augustine in “Sinister Secrets” (08-2022). I remembered the later one more, as it was read more recent, but I still read each of the stories again. Shadows of Trust is seemingly a new story. I am giving full marks because I’m invested in Abramson’s world and enjoy the characters. If I was reading this without reading her other works I might feel the stories were a little repetitive because of the children in danger scenarios. But it fits as part of the connection for the stories is the Valez's taking in the kids and growing their family. Abramson doesn’t always include religion in her books but Hunted has them attending church, and uses terms that would be familiar to members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons).
I enjoyed the collection and Abramson fans will as well. Thank you to NetGalley and Covenant Communications for the eARC and I am leaving an honest review.
All the love for Shadows of Trust! Traci Hunter Abramson delivers a heartfelt, suspenseful novella collection featuring Doug & Jill Valdez. If you’ve read the Undercurrents, Saint Squad, or Guardians series, you’ll recognize this amazing couple. Unable to have children of their own, they open their hearts & home to children who desperately need them. These stories tugged on my heartstrings while keeping me on the edge of my seat!
Hunted: After her mother passed away, thirteen-year-old Reagan’s left with an abusive stepfather who’s in league with a terrifying group. After seeing too much, she flees into the forest & is rescued by Doug Valdez. Doug immediately takes her into protective custody & he & Jill become her temporary guardians. But, can they keep her safe while hunting a group of terrorists? Reagan’s an absolute delight. I loved how clever & brave she is & how she’s always secretly listening to Doug’s conversations. He knows she’s there but no one else does.
Secrets of St. Augustine: Thirteen-year-old Layla’s life is thrown upside down when she calls her grandmother from her French boarding school & discovers a shocking truth. After overhearing a plot to kill her, she tries to run away. Fortunately, FBI agent Doug Valdez is there undercover investigating a money laundering scheme. When Layla escapes by stowing away in his car, they soon become targets of ruthless thieves who’ll stop at nothing. There’s non-stop action as Layla, Doug, & his family try to stay a few steps ahead of the criminals.
Shadows of Trust: A teenaged Sophie & her seven-year-old brother Mason are left in the custody of their drug addicted aunt. When her unsavory dealer decides to kidnap & ransom them for their million dollar trust fund, Doug & Jill are right there to rescue them. My heart ached for these kids. I was so touched by Sophie who’s so willing to go without to help her brother. It’s a story that’ll have you quickly turning the pages.
All three novellas are fantastic! The first two were previous published, but Shadows of Trust is brand new. Loved these stories of found family, nonstop action, & faith! Highly recommend! I received an advanced copy from the publisher. All opinions are my own & provided voluntarily.
Absolutely fantastic collection of suspense novellas!
Hunted "She drew a breath, and a plea echoed through her mind - Please let this last."
cabin in the woods escape from danger overheard secret plots
Secrets of St. Augustine "She rushed into their embrace and, for the first time in years, found home."
boarding school on the run trust fund scam
Shadows of Trust "I really love you right now." "I really love you right back."
orphaned siblings kidnapping/ransom scheme the Whitmores
Doug and Jill Valdez are two of my favorite characters connected to the Saint Squad books and they are featured in all three of these novellas. The first two novellas have been previously published in other connections and Shadows of Trust is being released for the first time!
Doug and Jill are unable to have children of their own, and beneath and mystery and heart pounding suspense of each story is the beautiful theme of family and love. These stories gave me all the feels and by the time I read the last one, I was in tears!
If you enjoy heroic, brave characters and stories of suspense and mystery as well as love and loyalty and found family, then you absolutely need to pick this one up! No need to have read any of Traci's other books, this collection can be enjoyed all on its own! Loved all of these stories and will definitely be re-visiting them again and again!
I received a complimentary copy but a positive review was not required.
Wow. These three suspense novella’s had me on the edge of my seat, my heart aching for the situations presented, and looking to see if anyone was behind me.
I couldn’t have loved it more how each Novella connected the two main MC’s Doug and Jill in each story. Their willingness to step in and right wrongs was inspiring. Heartwarming.
✨Reagan running for her life after seeing/knowing too much. *I loved her determination and the trust she had in Doug and Jill. Along with the beauty of the other young women welcoming someone new.
“He got shot for me.”
✨Layla in hiding from those she should be able to trust because they care more about her wealth. *I loved when Doug helped her climb out of the hotel room and the focus of -no child should be alone in the world, rich or poor.-
“If dad hadn’t been at your school, you might not have gotten away.”
“For now, we’re your family.”
✨Sophie and Mason. Left in the care of their aunt with a drug addiction. It’s already a bad situation, but becomes life threatening when their aunts dealer learns of their trust fund. *their story hit me in the feels the hardest. The way Sophie had to grow up and take care of her brother. The sacrifices, the constant fear, the huger and worry. I loved the grocery shopping scene with Jill and how they followed promptings from the spirit.
“I think I have to chalk this one up to divine intervention.”
✨Favorite Quote of All: “Really? Kissing in the kitchen again? We have rules about that.”
“I think it’s more accurate to say you keep trying to make rules about that, and we keep ignoring you.”
“Clearly.”
Such a thrilling and powerful ride. You will love the suspense and thrill covered in the care and love of prayer and promptings. Traci brought another amazing read.
4.5 stars This collection of novellas had me on the edge of my seat! Shadows of Trust is written by Traci Hunter Abrmason and it is a collection of novellas. I loved getting to re-read the first two novellas since they were a part of different books and it was so cool to read a new story. Shadows of Trust has Hunted, Secrets of St. Augustine and Shadows of Trust. I love Doug and Jill and it is so cool to read about them growing their family. They had been through so much and I enjoyed getting to know them more. The suspense had me on the edge of my seat! I didn’t know what was going to happen. One of my favorite parts of these novellas was reading about Dough and Jill caring for the children under their care. I adored all of these novellas equally! They were so fun and it was cool to see the growth of the characters. The kids were so strong and I loved reading about their interactions with Doug and Jill. Reagan, Layla, Sophie and Mason were so strong and it was sweet to read about them finding their family in different ways. I would totally recommend this collection! It was a perfect read. Each novella features Doug and Jill as they find themselves in a new situation with a new child to protect. Shadows of Trust is a clean romantic suspense collection of novellas. I received a complimentary copy
Traci Abramson's books are a must read for me. I love every one of them so much! This book is a collection of 3 novellas, 2 have been released before and 1 is brand new. Each of them are so great!
I love that the three of these are all about Jill and Doug. Those two are the most amazing humans. I love how they see the need of kids around them and help them to get out of awful situations.
Hunted is Reagan's story. She's a young girl who lost her mom. Now her step-dad is trying to do something awful. And Reagan knows too much. Luckily, she finds Doug and Jill right when she needs them. And they work hard to protect her from the awful people looking for her.
Secrets of St. Augustine is Layla's story. She's in a boarding school in the French countryside. Only, she finds out that the headmaster is planning to kill her over a school break. And that's when she finds Doug, just in the nick of time.
Shadows of Trust is the new book in this collection. I love Sophie. She's working hard to take care of her younger brother, Mason, with no help. She even has to protect him from her aunt. Luckily for them, Jill is Mason's teacher. And she can tell when something is fishy.
Each of these novellas were so great! I love this one so much!
“Really? Kissing in the kitchen again? We have rules about that.”
As a huge fan of Traci Hunter Abramson, I have absolutely loved her characters, FBI Special Agent Doug Valdez and Jill, since we met them in her Undercurrents series. My favorite thing about Shadows of Trust is that it is a collection of three novellas that give glimpses of Doug and Jill’s version of happy ever after and shows what’s going on with them while we follow Doug’s career in other books. I had read the first two novellas in previous anthologies, but I loved having them in this new anthology with the third, brand new novella. It just brought Doug and Jill’s story together and is so fun to have in one book. I also love that the new novella takes place after Covert Ops and Reconnect and the glimpse into the presidency we get. So good! I couldn’t put this down.
Reading highs for me (and why I totally recommend this book): *edge of your seat suspense *Doug and Jill *Adoption focused *Teenager/kid main characters *Multiple POVs *Cameos from the Whitmores I highly recommend this book.
Shadows of Trust by Traci Hunter Abramson is a must read! This book is a compilation of three novellas – two that have previously been released in other collections – and one brand new one that are full of mystery, intrigue, and heart – stopping moments that also warm the soul all at the same time!
Doug Valdez has become a favorite character of mine over the years and I may or may not have jumped up and down at the opportunity to read about his adventures in one setting. The three novellas: Hunted, Secrets of St. Augustine and Shadows of Trust are all well written and full of suspenseful plots that kept me on my toes. While each novella is a quick read, the stories feel complete and full of great character depth. Reagan, Layla, Sophie and Mason are all incredible characters that have made lemonade out of lemons, and quite honestly, made me hug my own children a little tighter this week. I felt all of the emotions and my only regret is that there weren’t three more stories to continue reading because I just love the Valdez family.
Doug and Jill Valdez have been characters in a previous series (Saint Squad) and it was wonderful to see the three novellas in this collection were all about them.
Unable to have children, each thrilling story allows them to fill their home with pieces of a family in gripping, dangerous, and heart-felt ways. The way Abramson writes connects a reader’s heart and soul together, infusing all the perilous situations with tender moments of affection and emotion, creating a found family in the midst of uncertainty.
This collection is true to this author’s style and there’s no need to read anything other than this to find deep satisfaction among the riveting suspense.
Content: moments of peril/danger; mild+ faith/religion
*I received a complimentary copy. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own and were voluntarily given*
O Traci! You always know just how to get to my heart! I absolutely love Doug and Jill, and now you can get all their stories in one place, plus a new one that completely pulls this little family all together! All three novellas are heartfelt and suspenseful! This collection totally blends mystery with emotional depth! Like usual, Traci weaves together stories that explore themes of family, love, and resilience, all while keeping readers on edge with her thrilling story lines! The characters are relatable and layered, with tension that will keep you up late reading But… besides all the suspense and mystery, what really made me love these stories is the way each story balances the action with genuine human connection. Whether it’s navigating adoption, loss, or danger, Traci’s writing captures readers to care deeply about the outcomes!
I was thrilled to be on the review team for this book. Not only is Abramson one of my favorite authors, the characters in these books are beloved. Doug and Jill are favorite characters of mine from the author’s UNDERCURRENTS series. I was thrilled to see their story continue in 3 heart-racing novellas.
In each novella, there is action and page turning suspense. Each one shows a progression in time and mirrors some previous books of the author’s. I loved how they each in that way.
No spoilers here, but I was thrilled with how Jill was able to become a mother and the melting of Doug’s heart towards their circumstances. Another favorite couple from Abramson’s books makes appearances.
Readers of Traci Hunter Abramson’s do not want o miss these exciting fast-paced novellas.
I received an eARC from the publisher. All views are my own.
This is a set of 3 short stories that follows a couple and how they met and adopted their 4 children. The husband is an FBI agent while the wife is a school teacher. It is Christian based, specifically The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, so you have to understand there is language specific to worship in that church. All of the children they adopted were found in traumatic situations, so the FBI side of things adds suspense and drama. The stories are enjoyable, and are actually solved in a relatively quick time frame. It is an enjoyable anthology. The characters are fun and you root for the children to be saved.
Thank you Netgalley for the complimentary copy to leave my honest review.
I really enjoyed this compilation of suspense novellas. I was expecting 3 distinct stories, which I got, but I loved the unexpected storyline and characters that remained throughout them all.
I love the Valdez family and their open house policy when it comes to children in need. Each novella features the Valdez Family in a sticky situation as they work to uncover secrets that put children at risk.
While the first two novellas have been published previously with stories from other authors, this is the first time they have been published together. The third story is new and I absolutely loved it.
If you like light suspense and goodness winning against evil, you would love this fun serries of novellas.
This book is comprised of 3 high suspense and action novellas with a strong faith theme. They are connected, but could be read and enjoyed separately. I always enjoy Traci's stories, and if you want a book that you cannot put down- these are right up there with her others.
A couple unable to have children of their own is struggling to agree on the options they face. She is a teacher, he is involved with the FBI and the White House in security. I love that amongst horrifying experiences and intense danger, there is a sense of love, kindness, and found family. They are able to open up their home to children in need while opening up their hearts to love they never imagined.
“Sometimes family is what you make it and their hearts and home have no limits.”
Hunted, Secrets of St. Augustine, and Shadows of Trust, are all 3 intensely thrilling stories with a lot of love and warmth.
I had already read the middle novella, but the other two were new to me! I love all of the clean suspense! It is difficult reading about children that aren’t safe, well loved, and fed. I can’t even begin to imagine being a teenager trying to keep myself and a younger sibling fed on $20 a week! I love how Doug and Jill took them in and am hoping for more! They are such amazing parents!
Though I would say that this book is not written quite as well as some of the better authors it was especially enjoyable to see characters that were kind and gentle when appropriate and wanted to take care of kids. I would recommend this book on the grounds of having characters with strengths instead of characters with flaws like most books seem to have these days.
Traci Hunter Abramson never disappoints. Another quick, enjoyable and addictive read. I have loved getting to watch all these families grow over the years and her ability to tie characters from all different stories together never ceases to amaze me. Doug and Jill have always been 2 of my favorites since the Undercurrent series.
Jill and Doug Valdez are just so good. I love my mom and dad but I kind of want to be adopted by them, too. Just saying. 😉
If you like novellas, mysteries, families, happy endings, and couples that makes you remember there are good people in the world, read this collection!
Some readers have complained that two of the three stories in this book were published previously in anthologies with other authors, but I was glad to read them again, plus the fine new story. More good stuff from Abramson is always welcome.
Three different stories of young people that are struggling with safety in their life, being taken care of and finding new homes. Very impressive story - I was very impressed with the characters of Doug and Jill Valdez and their standards of helping these children. Great example.
