Unlucky You

Rate this book
When you give your heart to someone, the last thing you expect is to have it ripped out of your chest. One night and one bad decision create a lifetime of regrets when Grand loses the one woman he was willing to risk it all for.

Losing his freedom is nothing in comparison to the devastation he feels knowing that his son will never get to know the woman who loved him more than she loved herself.

Saniya Montgomery learned at an early age what it means to be loved, but instead of setting the bar high, she chases the thrill of those who aren’t worthy.

Grand Sinclair is just another thrill on the long list of bad decisions. He warns Saniya to stay away but she’s stubborn and determined. The minute his walls come down, Saniya realizes that the tortured fighter with eyes that crush your soul is nothing she expects but everything she wants.

4.5 ⭐️ Wow, I appreciated the uniqueness of Grand and Aleah's situation. I didn't anticipate that. One night can alter a person's life forever. Grand embodied the concept of an alpha male, after serving almost five years in prison and losing time he can't get back with his son. Raiden provided the perfect balance he had always sought. I adored the interactions between them. Grand is attempting to navigate life and combat the challenges he faces both mentally and systemically. I liked how KC highlighted what some convicts endure when they return home from jail and how the system is constantly attempting to trap them. Grand was going to do whatever it took to protect those he cared about, no matter what.

Saniya was a refreshingly chaotic female character. Saniya did not mind a challenge. She was intrigued by the mysterious Grand and effectively put herself into his life. Grand and Saniya took their time because they were in a special circumstance. Saniya was exceptionally patient and understanding of Grand's situation. I love the unexpected love and how a family was formed with Meena and Tali.

Aleah father was a damn headache. I COULD NOT STAND HIM. I really think he got off too damn easy. I loved this story and where KC took it. I know it is a standalone but I could see another book potentially with Talon and Meena.

Grand had it all. A beautiful lady, a baby boy who stole his entire face, and he was the undefeated champion in the world of underground fighting. But, in the blink of an eye, he lost it all. Now, five years later Grand is tryin’ to rebuild his life while navigating his new normal. But, that’s easier said than done when you’re a felon. With no prospects for legitimate employment, Grand returns to what he knows best.

Saniya is a well-known freelance photographer in Diamond Falls. She’s connected to the industry elites and her popularity gets her in most doors that are closed to everyone else. When she’s tapped to get pictures of a secret underground fight that’s invite only with no information of who, what, when, or where she accepts the challenge.

Grand is a complex and frustrating character. His pride was a constant deterrence. He refused to accept even the smallest bit of help from anyone because, to him, if felt like a handout. You could offer Grand a stick of gum and he’d tell you no; he can buy it himself. He was determined to rebuild his life with no help from his mama, Tali, or Mr. Carson. When Grand meets Saniya, he’s not prepared for the onslaught of feelings he thought he buried when Aleah died. Some would call Saniya inquisitive but, I would call her nosey AF. This chic was Kinni 2.0. She asked a million questions and she was hardheaded AF but, it worked out in her favor. Saniya was exactly what Grand needed to overcome the darkness that was surrounding him. She was definitely his light at the end of the tunnel. And, can we talk about how stinkin’ adorable Raiden was?!!! I absolutely loved this kid. I say this all the time about child characters and Raiden is no different. He stole the whole book. Unlucky You was the comeback story I didn’t know I needed. It was filled with heartbreak, redemption, and love. Grand and Saniya are going to take you an emotional rollercoaster but, the ending is so worth the ride.

Sweet Redemption

We love a redemption story!

Life was good for Grand, he was in love and they had a healthy baby boy. He was moving away from underground fighting to be the man that they needed, except ish hit the fan and their love story ended terribly before they hit a stride. Five years later Grand is trying to pick up the pieces of his fractured life...his fractured heart. He was determined to make up for all of the loss Raiden (his son) felt. In the midst of trying to avoid everyone he runs into Saniya. He didn't feel like he deserved her or any happiness for that matter, but Saniya had other plans. Sis was persistent and she wasn't letting the connection she felt between them go. She kept showing up and he finally gave in and it was up from there. I enjoyed their evolution as a couple and Grands redemption was sweet.

It was a bittersweet story, and life goes on and I'm glad they were able to do so happily.

Absolutely captivating!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Grand Sinclair is a complicated man whose whole life spun out of control. His girlfriend died from an allergic reaction to the Date Rape drug. The creep that gave it to her LAUGHED about it. Grand punched him and the guy died. Not from the punch but from hitting his head on a nearby table. Grand was judged so unfairly. Unfortunately, his 5 month old son paid the price.

Grand needed money after 5 years in jail, so he turned to Underground Fighting. But there were some real down and dirty creeps juggling his life like he was a puppet. Now that photographer, Saniya is in his life, will Grand finally get the life he deserves?

Grand faced so much trauma and loss. Saniya knows what she wants and knows how to love. But will Grand allow her to heal him? This story broke my heart repeatedly…. It gets 5 stars because it ended up repairing it.

4.5 🌟!

Grand was the definition of Unlucky You 😫. That man couldn’t catch a break at all smh. That prologue tore me up, and Grand's inability to forgive himself at the story's beginning was heartbreaking. Saniya was the right, hardheaded lover girl that Grand needed. Her defiance and determination are exactly how she ended up in Grand’s lap! Her decision not to share those photos lets me know she was gone for Grand lol. Their love story was sweet, and KC Mills built up some anxiety/tension with new obstacles that had the potential to take Grand away again. Ultimately, we got the HEA we deserved, but whew, it was a ride. Also, Tali and Sameena were perfect secondary characters, and I wouldn’t mind an update on where those two end. To Mr Johnson, you got precisely what you deserve, loser smh.
I would recommend this book for sure!

This is my first 5 star of the year. Once I started reading, I just could not stop. The book starts off with heartbreak and drama and all the shenanigans, and I was so here for it. I easily fell in love with Grand and Saniya. The book is called Unlucky due to the unfortunate events that take place, yet Saniya was just the luck Grand needed.

I admit that the first couple chapters had me ready to throw my Kindle across the room because Aleah's parents were pissing me tf off. Like I had to remind myself, it's just a book 😆. Just know they can get it. An low-key. I hope Grand gets the chance to one up them later or Raiden does when he is older. *Deep Sigh 😮‍💨 😆.

Grand is such a great dad and stood on business. He is a true alpha male, yet his son Raiden really softened him up and was the balance he needed. Grand doesn't want anything handed to him, but the way his mother held him down while he was locked down made me want to see him win even more. The small moments of her just watching him be a dad made me so happy for him.

Saniya was seriously like a 4 leaf clover. The second she came into the picture, things seemed to turn around for the good. I love how she is a strong FMC and doesn't mind challenging Grand. My girl was like a light stalker that wasn't taking no for an answer, lol.

One of my favorite things about this book was the easter eggs I found within the characters and the support within the relationships they had. An example would be Saniya and Sammena as well as Grand and Tali. I adored how they had each other's backs, and the banter between them was so rich. I hope we get a book 2 with more of Tali and Sammena. Tali is not a relationship kinda guy, but I have a feeling he may have met his match with Sammena.

Again, I just loved this book, and it really pulled at my heart strings with the found family, grief, and unexpected love ❤️. Seriously 10/10. No one does it like K.C. Mills. From the way her MMC's love on their women to the drama, that be having me about to rip my hair out. Love her down bad!

What a read K.C.!! I felt like my heart was broken over and over again like Grand’s, as he suffered loss after loss! 💔 It wasn’t enough that he lost the love of his life, that evil, vindictive, ass man had to just add a cherry on top!! 🤬 Ughhhhh….. Thank God for momma and Tali, as they held it down for Raiden.

Once out, Grand is filled with so much regret, and sadness. How will he make this up to Raiden? Will he forgive me? Will he want me in his life? His mind was going a mile a minute as he tried desperately to make things right as quickly as possible. However, his heart is broken, and he doesn’t believe that he will ever feel a love like Aleah’s ever again. So, he goes back to what he knows, until he can do better.

Saniya, a well-known photographer, takes on a job to get photos of an exclusive underground fight. She questions the secrecy of it all, but being about her coins, she takes the job. Who knew that one job could change her life. When Saniya lays eyes on Grand, she immediately recognizes him, and is curious about this handsome man, with sad eyes. During and after the fight, her intrigue grows, and she needs to know more. Even after Tail and Grand himself tell her “This is not what you want,” her hardheaded ass keeps popping up until she gets just what she is looking for.

Grand isn’t looking for and doesn’t want anything to do with women right now, as it is all about Raiden. However, this persistent woman also has him curious and beginning to feel things he didn’t believe he was capable of after his loss. Saniya slowly wears him down, and they quickly become all that the other needs. Saniya helped bring life back into Grand, and Grand showed her he was the type of man that her father would approve of.

Raiden!!! What a smart and adorable child! After all that fretting Grand was doing, all Raiden wanted was to be in his father’s presence. This was an emotional read, but it was so worth it.

4.25⭐️ 2.5🌶️

“I’m going to make you love me, Saniya. I want you to fall so fking hard that the fear of landing terrifies you. But you won’t get hurt because I’ll be there to catch you. So yeah, your love. You’re gonna give me that and I’m going to give you mine.”

I love watching a love story start, unfold, and then progress into something with a solid foundation. This was definitely a great strangers to lovers story - plus it's KC Mills so, of course!
Grand and Saniya were drawn to each other in The Underground and The Pit. A boxer and a photographer.

Grand is dealing with so much pain and regret from his first relationship and I cannot imagine the pain he has gone through these past five years. But even though Saniya was a stranger, the instant connection brings these two together in a series of random events. Grand was her protector before he even knew her name.

Saniya was intrigued from the start and I love how she immediately knew he was intentionally punishing himself when she watched him fight. I wished there was an element of therapy in this one because KC can incorporate it well. She absolutely did it in Shadows and Whispers. I know it's mentioned that he goes to group sessions but a deeper dive would've been great, especially with his baby boy.

I enjoyed this book. The ending felt a little rushed - it would've been nice to see Saniya and his mom connect even more - but it was a beautiful ending nonetheless. 🍀

This book was incredibly heartfelt, and I couldn’t help but feel sorry for the MMC and the hardships he faced. He had lost so much and was determined to be a good father to his son. However, his ex-girlfriend’s father, who was essentially the villain, continued to cause trouble and ruin his life. Despite these challenges, the MMC persevered and found support from many honest and kind people. I particularly liked the FMC and her unwavering determination, understanding, and love throughout their relationship. Their chemistry was undeniable, and their love connection felt genuine. The author also did a great job of developing the MMC’s son, making him a memorable minor character. I would love to see if her sister and his cousin get their own book so we can explore their relationship further.

This def renewed my love for KC’s romances. Grand and Saniya were so cute 🥰

Even though Grand had a rough beginning in this book, losing his first love and serving 5 years for killing the man who caused her death, he really lucked out with meeting Saniya. And I’m so glad she wasn’t an annoying FMC. I actually liked her spit fire attitude and the fact that she rode for Grand with the same intensity that he rode for her. I just wish we got a little more scenes of them 2 tbh.

This was a beautiful book of redemption and it was purely perfect. I loved how his girl was not playing behind and was willing to take on the world to protect him and his son. I also love that he was given this second chance at love an it was just as great and protective and all in compassing as his first love. This was perfect

You had me at daddy…

I’m a sucker for a book with a daddy and his child! So if you were thinking otherwise, get ya mind out of the gutter🤣

Grand was a sweetheart and his past history no longer defined him once he made room for Saniya in his life. I enjoyed this story via audiobook.

4.5⭐️

I absolutely loved getting to know Grand in this story. This was a really great redemption story. So much was unnecessarily thrown at Grand but I loved how he navigated this. I loved how he allowed himself to open up and allow himself to be loved by Saniya. Their story was such a good one. She didn’t force him to love her. She didn’t try to make him be someone he isn’t. She met him where he was and showed him that he deserved love despite the circumstances.

The only thing that did t make sense or I wish had more background on was Aleah’s father’s hate toward him. You had no relationship with your daughter and hate your grandson but want to make this man’s life a living hell. I get we needed a villain but I think we were missing some a k to justify the hate.

Overall I thoroughly enjoyed this. And the spice was spicing 🥵🥵🥵🥵

One night changed the trajectory of so much. How does one forgive himself and want to live when he blames himself for losing his love. In a spilt second Grand lost so much. To then get sentenced to 5 years was insane. In a short time span, he lost his love, and would have to live with that hurt in the worst way by being behind bars. Fast forward, Grand is released and he’s still blaming himself.

His son is now 5, and despite everything, he is trying to figure out how to be the man his son needs and get from under his probation situation. Grand does what he knows can earn him some quick cash and starts underground fighting. Insert Saniya, Saniya is tasked with getting into the underground fighting match and taking photos of the up and coming fighters only to see Grand and become fixated on him. How do you want someone but not someone at the same time.

The chemistry, the pull, the back and forth, no matter how much she tried to stay away and Grand told her to stay away they always ended up back to each other. The craziest part was Grand felt guilty about even wanting something because of how things happened with Aleah. But when the universe speaks, it speaks. Saniya and Grand built a beautiful relationship while navigating, uncertainties and doubt. Watching their love blossom was beautiful especially when they didn’t even plan for it to happen. From the sparks, to the fire, to the love. Her bond with Raiden was just as beautiful to see and an added bonus. K.C. did it again!!!! From love, to hurt, to redemption, to forgiveness of thyself, to love again. This is a story you should read.

Grand and Aleah’s love story being cut short by her tragic death broke my heart. I don’t understand why Moses would do something like that!

Aleah’s father was a HEADACHE!
Raiden stole my heart! 🚛🛻💙

Saniya is not a woman who takes “no” easily — and honestly, I loved that she was on a little bit of stalker vibes. 😂 She’s out here punching folks in the mouth as much as Grand, and he’s the fighter! 🤣

Mr. Carson’s fatherly wisdom for Grand was just beautiful. And when Grand admitted he wants love and a beautiful life but doesn’t feel worthy of it? Whew, so touching.

Loved Saniya’s dad, Grand’s Mama and Sameena and Talon 🥰🥰

Such a heartfelt, healing story. KC Mills really did her thing with this one! ❤️

I love reading books where one of the MCs believes they already met their one true love until something tragic happens that forces them apart and they find just as much, if not more happiness and love in someone else. Especially when that new love helps to keep the memories of the past love alive…
Grand needed Saniya. He needs her to heal, to become successful and to get his luck back! I wish we could have had more of a look into Saniya’s life. There wasn’t much going on with her, her life / the story revolved around Grand and getting his life back on track. She was his good luck charm.

Omggg I did not want this story to end! It was soooo good! I kept replaying (and rereading) Grand and Saniya’s first kiss. Whew! The intensity and the build up of their relationship was just WHEW! I don’t know what to say except READ IT now!

Also side note: I absolutely love the movie Southpaw and this book is like the black version of that…with BDE haha!

Great job K.C.!! I’m bout to go reread this real quick :P

good read

I liked this story. Definitely a good read. A man finding his way back into society and fatherhood. Grand had to learn to forgive himself and move forward. Samiya was cool and Raiden was a highlight. I think this story lacked romance though. Things kind of just fell into place between the two. The main focus was Grand and his story.

A few small inconsistencies.

So good

I just love Crescent Falls. I love all the stories being intertwined.

This was so good!!!!! Saniyah took one look at Grand and knew he was trouble. But knew she had to have him. He came with a lot of baggage but it was worth it.

Ant wait to hear about her sister and Talon!!! Hoping they get their own book.

This was such a cute read!! Picture the FMC “chasing” the man this time.

Grand is freshly out of prison after serving time for manslaughter….. he is a single father, and currently unemployed. Saniya is a freelance photographer, and takes exquisite photos for media outlets and social media.

Saniya was for better words, BOLD. She is very inquisitive and found herself curious about Grand the underground fighter that fought with precision and accuracy.

Great read! Good plot! Good characters and an everlasting love.
