Archie's brother Des has been sent with the militia to fight the Japanese in the jungles of New Guinea and his brother Harold is about to join him, after surviving the campaign in the Middle East. In his diary, Archie records his own battles in Townsville against the local bully, Beefy, and how the town becomes a base for the pacific campaign, as the Australian coastline reels under Japanese bombs.
I really enjoyed this book and it kept me wanting to read more the whole time. However I didn’t like how Des’s diary entries was just added in there half way through the book. I think if they wanted to do that they should have had his entries from the start. They also reference a lot of death on the Kokoda track but none of the main characters die and that just doesn’t seem realistic. Despite this I enjoyed the book and would recommend it to stage 3 and 4 students.
