Dear Author,
We met in the strangest way.

I was convinced he was a girl because of his choice of character, and he thought the same thing about me. You can imagine how surprised we were when we first met in person. How confused I was about my feeling for him. I was already in love with the person behind the character, but I had never been attracted to a man before.

Can you tell the story of how we became that happy couple in the picture?

Photo Description:
Two men, in their early twenties, lean towards each other for a kiss. Both smiling, they have their eyes shut. One boy has tousled hair, an earring and an upper ear piercing. He’s wearing a bright turquoise T-shirt while the other has neater hair and is wearing a checked shirt. Their hands are held, and a gaming controller nestles between them. A computer screen with a game playing on it is visible in the background.

This story was written as a part of the M/M Romance Group's "Love’s Landscapes" event. Group members were asked to write a story prompt inspired by a photo of their choice. Authors of the group selected a photo and prompt that spoke to them and wrote a short story.

This story may contain sexually explicit content and is intended for adult readers. It may contain content that is disagreeable or distressing to some readers. The M/M Romance Group strongly recommends that each reader review the General Information section before each story for story tags as well as for content warnings.

Olley White

I live in England and use the fenland where I live as inspiration for my writing. I love romance in stories - boy/girl, boy/boy, girl/girl...if they're in love I love them.

I love M/M fiction...Eric Arvin, Kaje Harper, Eli Easton, Heidi Cullinan, Tj Klune, Amy Lane, Rhys Ford...and soooo many more, I can't get enough man-on-man action. :D

I also adore fantasy stories, from Harry Potter to Bella, Edward & Jacob (team Jacob BTW!!), from Clary and Jace and, the oh so magnificent, Magnus Bane to Locke Lamora and Jean Tannen and the rest of The Gentleman Bastards, from Kvothe to Tyrion....yep I love fantasy.

TV wise I'm a Supernatural, Looking, Teen Wolf, Being Human, Buffy, Big Bang, QI, GoT, True Blood fan - amongst others. If it was books or TV though, books would win, hands down.

I'm married with two amazing children, a heinz 57 dog and two 'rule the roost' cats (is there any other kind?).

I write YA under the name Lori Powell (this is the profile I use most often on GR: https://www.goodreads.com/author/show...
and I also have a unicorn identity and that is Daisy Silver Damsel, but sssshhh, that's top secret....

Dec. 5,2016: Upgraded the rating to 5 stars! If a writer would ask me what I want in a M/M Romance book, I'll point this one. :D

I LOVED IT!!!

This worked tremendously well for me!!!

I loved everything about it! First, is the prompt! The picture used was so awesome. Gay gamer lovers FTW!!! Imba!!! :D Then the cover, it's very cool and catchy!

The story was wonderful! Everything about it, the characters, the way they met (which is one of the most awesome first dates I've read), Max's realization of his feelings for Stefan, their journey, their epiphany, the start of their relationship...it was perfect and incredibly adorable . I felt really damn good while reading this. And it was also hard to put down!

Also, even if , I wasn't frustrated. And I feel Max's GFY journey was honest and believable. I really liked the GFY aspect of it. Especially when Max decided that he wanted Stefan? OH MY GOD. I melted. I loved Max then!

The only thing that holds me back for giving it a perfect rating was I'm not sure if the story is memorable enough. I mean I'm not sure if it's as memorable as to those I have given 5 stars to.
But, THIS IS MY MOST FAVORITE LOVE'S LANDSCAPES STORY SO FAR.

By the way I like to special mention one of my favorite moments in the book, when they did this:

A RECOMMENDED FREE Feel Good M/M Romance Story!
Enjoy!!! :D

I loved

Fighting Dirty by Olley White

by this author, so I couldn't wait to get my hands on this one.

Great prompt, amazing cover, what's not to love?

If you're expecting the grit of Fighting Dirty, forget it.

This is an utterly romantic, slow burn, contemporary tale of two young men (mid-20s) falling into an easy friendship that turns into something more.

The minute Max, waiting at the entrance to the zoo for his online gaming crush to show up, lays his eyes on "Stef," he realizes that she is in fact a he, not Stefanie but Stefan; thankfully, the holy-hell awkwardness dissipates with Stefan's mega-watt grin and sweet charm.

Of course, Max isn't gay. Or is he?

There wasn't much steam (multiple hot kisses and a frottage scene in the shower), which normally sets me off on a grumpy rant, but I really didn't mind it all that much in this story, because there was so much tension and anticipation and taking it "slowly" (Stefan's idea!).

I'm not going to lie: I love buttsex virgins, and would have liked to witness Max's first time, but I'm slutty like that.

This was a very realistic GFY, or perhaps, OFY. Max definitely thought about how his life would change if he were to fall in love with a man, but he didn't panic about it either. In the end, he wanted Stefan, and nothing else mattered.

The kiss sparked a need in Max that he hadn't realised was there before. Every previous kiss he'd experienced felt chaste by comparison. He truly didn't care it was a man he was kissing, was needing - to him it was just Stefan, the person who he was falling in love with.

The writing and dialogue were spot on. I really liked the secondary characters and the Britishisms.

Truly a very sweet read with a wonderful HEA.

Oh, and DOGS. There were dogs! Double love!

One of the best GFY stories I've read in a long time.
Spoiler free, for your enjoyment!

This story had be busting a gut. I thought it was absolutely hilarious. The awkward moments (oh my god, the first meeting! I just about died of embarrassment), the subtle hints, the sweet comments. It was all brilliant and just what I wanted.

This is the type of story that is sweet and endearing, but doesn't make my teeth fall out.

I can't pick a favorite between Max and Stef. How could I? And those are the types of love stories that really make you want the characters to be together.

I believe my friend Sara said it best in her review here, if you wanna check it out.

Puppy lunge hug for Max and Stefan:

description

Very sweet and I loved that Max didn't have a major (or minor, really) crisis over his love and attraction for a man. I would have loved to see more couply stuff though.

However, my favorite part was all the new Briticisms I learned. Like "top tossing totty." I'm going to assume that means a really good looking bloke (heh--see what I did there?) who's well worth a masturbatory session or at the top of his masturbating list. If one makes such a list. I should definitely make a list.

Also loved that Stefan worked at an animal shelter which is worthwhile and depressing as shit.

Anyway! Highly enjoyable. And sweet. Which I said already.

P.S. The cover is awesome as well. I wonder which talented person designed it. *ass kissing noises*

Confession: it weirds me out to read the work of friends cuz what if it sucks? Then let's face it that's just awkward, but I like Downton Abbey aka Lori/Olley (I'm incapable of referring to anyone by their actual name) so I figured I'd check this out. It was really good. Not my usual fare, but I expected that.

Max and Stefan's relationship evolves realistically. No one's a crazy train. No one's jumping into the deep end of the pool five seconds after meeting. These blokes are real. I love saying blokes. Speaking of…

Not only did I enjoy this read BUT I got my learn on too! Pork scratchings, hiddledy, squash (not the vegetable or the game), bacon buttys… the list is endless. It's entirely possible that I could pass as a native.
description
Yeah, you're right. *hangs head*

In a nutshell, I thoroughly enjoyed Game On. I like both these blokes. I loved all the cheesy things they did together in their dating adventures. Their relationship was constructed beautifully and I fell into their journey. I chuckled a few times. I had some feels especially with the rescue dogs. What I was most pleased by or maybe grateful for was the language used:

Talking and laughing together and the first tentative steps together. Perfection found in all its imperfect glory.

That's erudite and observant. Impressive. So, yeah, I'd recommend this to those who enjoy GFY or sweet reads.

My one stumbling block is the set up which cannot be blamed on Downton. I really had trouble with it. Wouldn't one of these blokes let the other bloke know he's a bloke before they meet? Just a 'hey, just so you know I'm a bloke. So… look for a bloke at the zoo, K?' Strange.

Let's hear it for old dogs!

The Story
Such an interesting prompt: two geeks after spending a year with chatting in an online game, getting to know each other, and mutually supposing the other one is a girl, meet. While Stefan is gay, and he is expecting only to have a BFF, Max is practically already in love with the person he has spent a year in the game's chatroom. Stefan is pleasantly surprised, while Max is a little bit disappointed but also conflicted about his feelings and his undiminished attraction to Stefan.

The Romance
Smooth, angst-free, nice, slow-burn, lovely.

Characters
Nice, charming, loveable.

Writing Style
A bit wordy; too many secondary characters.

Erotica
Not explicit enough.

Setting

Ending
HEA.

Doh!

When the real world collides with your avatar there's bound to be some misconceptions. Sweet GFY romance that has all the moves. This is a seriously cute and angst-free charmer.

Favorite passage:

So... I didn't read this today, I actually beta read this story and I can tell you that even in raw form, I loved the hell out of it. The more then 100 comments I left the author on her manuscript would be solid proof of my affection.

What a great take on the prompt with Stefan and Max. I love how they became friends through the game and arranged to meet in person. How Max was trying SO DAMN HARD not to imagine the "girl" he was going to meet as one of the feline characters and how he admired the style of the boy who seemed to be waiting as well. The whole online exchange between the boys was totes adorable and so very fitting to who they were.

Ahhh..who they are... Stefan and his love of animals had me in a puddle of goo. Max and, *sigh* Max just being Max and doing what felt right and dinner and beaches and skating and.... I can go on and on.

I guess you just have to fight for what you want and not be afraid of what you might lose.

I loved the GFY in this story. It was so well done. I may be a bit biased but I'm not, I am a picky reader and this story was so good. It was thoughtful with a message and doesn't flog you over the head with a wet fish. I love the subtly of it and the bits of pop culture that get thrown in as well. Yeah, I will stop my gush fest now.

Bottom Line:
I love the chapter titles.
I love the gorgeous imagery of the video game.
I think dressed up Stefan is smoking hot.
I think Max and Chapter 10 might be my favorite things ever.
I love all these that have to do with skating.
I love all these that have to do with dancing.
I love first kisses so fucking much.
I love the promise of tomorrow and tomorrow's tomorrow...
I love this story.

I mean, what the... just stop it already with the sassy, funny, sweet, butterfly-central-in-the-belly loving hot fawesomeness!

I mean... who hasn't felt, not only that first love, but that first person who truly turns you on in every way? You know when it's different, when it's more.

Max and Stefan's personalities struck me as real, fully formed and ready to give us much more in the future. (Pwetty pwease? Yes, got demmit, this story has me all curly cue squishy. Demmit!!)

The dialogue was natural, which is a talent. Not everyone can write dialogue that has the flow we all recognize as truthful.

Was this a little too perfect? Yeah. Did both Max and Stefan arrive at some conclusions a little too easily? Yup. But listen, this leads to my next point: sexuality is fluid, it falls at every pinpoint on the sliding scale, nothing is absolute, except what is absolutely right for you. Both of these guys expressed themselves as being of this mindset. As it should be.

I like the way their relationship was handled. The epilogue may not have been necessary, taking a bit away from the impact of that ending, but it was cute and a little clever.

I definitely recommend this'n. :D

I liked this story a whole heck of a lot.

While on the surface I have almost nothing in common with these characters - I'm not male, British, in my twenties, have a great affinity for animals, gaming, roller skating, or public humiliation dancing - Max and Stefan wormed their way into my heart almost instantly. By the time Max started to feel his first flutterings of same-sex sexual awareness, I was completely invested in them and their happily ever after. My heart literally clutched when they were apart. That's the sign of a really great story, don't you think? One that causes its readers to have a physical reaction to it?

While there were some tender kisses, and a sweet, soapy hand job (and I was fully expecting it given Stefan's "Slowly. Slowly" mantra), I'm forced to acknowledge my inner horn dog and give the story -1 Strength point for no on the page penetration. (Sorry, Lori, it's totally a "it's not you, it's me" situation because I thought that what you did do with your boys on the page, and how their relationship progressed, was perfection).

My thanks to the sassy Brit for participating in the Love's Landscapes event (not once, but twice!) and for all of the behind-the-scenes work that editors, beta readers, and the MM Group Mods put into making this FREE event a massive success! And also a big thanks to the fabulous Natasha Snow who keeps churning out my most favouritest covers for these tales. THANKS, GUYS!

Well that was just adorable.

I loved this story. But I really appreciated the humor. I laughed out loud at:
“Seen anything you fancy?”
“Maybe,” said Max,....“I usually go for something vegetarian, but I’m thinking of trying some meat tonight.”

Two other quotes really stood out for me:

“It’s better to have tried than live with regrets.”

and
“Gay, straight, bi— labels, schmabels.”

Great story, lovable MCs, likeable secondary characters and guyliner!!! What more could you ask for in a FREE story?!

Thank you, Lori/Olley, for writing not just one but two stories for this event.

Okay, let me get my issue out first. It is more about personal preference regarding technical aspect of the writing.

Ms. White seemed to like writing LONG paragraphs (honestly, that is why I haven't finished reading her other story, even if that one is only 8k long). When I say long, it consists probably > 10 sentences. Once, I even counted one paragraph with 20 sentences!!

I know that there is no standard in how long a paragraph should be. BUT, reflecting to my own (emphasis in MY) experience in reading, long-winded paragraphs tend to make me lose focus on the story. It's hard for me to concentrate if a paragraph takes almost half-screen of my .pdf page (or in Kindle case, needs several screen-touches to finish it). I admit that I was itching to break down those long paragraphs myself, just to make my reading life much easier *lol*.

Of course, there are authors who also write long paragraphs, but somehow, it feels more distracting here. Maybe because Ms. White is a new-to-me author? So I have yet familiarize myself with her voice...

ANYWAY! My aversion towards long paragraphs aside, I loved this story!! It was definitely one of my most favorites from the event so far. It had NONE of the usual clichés of contemporary MMs. It felt refreshing (as slash fan-fictions could be), light, easy breezy, natural and down-to-earth.

It was so easy to being charmed by Max and Stefan. Their relationship started as friendship and it was genuine joy reading their friendly activities -- from going to the zoo, to the roller-skating, to the dancing (very creative moments, Ms. White!). There was none of those insta-love crap. NONE of my pet peeves were present (no baby as endearment, thank you God!). The female friends were likable as well. The ending was particularly sweet.

I loved how Max's come to conclusion on how he really loved Stefan came without much angst. While internal struggle could be an appealing storyline, but there are times where I agree with Max when it comes to labeling. Gay, straight, bi-sexual ... labels, schmabels. I just want to read about LOVE. Love is love, love is genderless, and it's really satisfying to read about it here.

I loved the use of some contemporary popular culture reference. I loved the dialogs -- again, it felt so natural, and there were definitely some worth being highlighted. I loved, LOVED the animals too (bring me animals in my book and I'm a happy camper). I could do with one on-page sex scenes (yes, OMG, Ami is asking for sex scene, go figure!) but I was still fine without it *grin*

So yep, one feel-good story that managed to draw big smile on my face, Ms. White. I approved.

PS: I do have one question. Who is John?!? Why he is never mentioned again?

From animal cuteness to hand-holding tingles! This story has such a huge heart.

We meet Max and Stefan just as they’re about to meet in person for the first time. That first face to face meet-up for online friends can be terrifying. To be honest, I still haven’t mustered up the courage to take that leap. So I could feel Max and Stefan’s jitters under my own skin. But these guys crossover! They continue to play and laugh away from the computer screen with roller skating, zoo strolling, dancing, and more!

”He rubbed his palm, the place where he could still feel the ghost of Stefan’s touch. His hand felt empty—hell, he felt empty, he wanted to reach forward and brush against him. Link fingers with him or hug him or sit next to him and feel the warmth of their bodies together.”

For me, the pace moved too slowly though. I know Max and Stefan wanted to take it slow, but you could tell where they were headed, so around 60% I just wanted them there already. Haha...These characters are so easy to like though. You can’t help but root for them. And I have to say— White captures laughs on the page beautifully! Every time Max and Stefan lost it in a fit of giggles made me laugh and smile right along with them. Snorts, belly laughs, and that contagious hysterical joy and energy jump off the page! I loved when they laughed. :)

A very sweet read.

p.s Top tossing totty and knickerbocker glory were just two of my favorite British terms. I had to look both of them up.

Ohhhh, I have things to say about this gem!

So much FUN. I love stories that are fun, romantic, and "feel good"--well, this one was more than feel good, it was a feel great!

That first scene while they are both hanging, scouring the crowds going into the zoo was fab! I loved knowing, while poor Max was oblivious. This had me chuckling and already anticipating that moment they finally realize . . .

Wonderful start to a wonderful story. I loved Stefan's work at the animal shelter, loved getting glimpses at Max's BF's life post kid (hahaha! boy, did I feel him!). Mostly, though, I loved the slow-burn GFY love story between these two boys. It was packed with fun tension and light on the angst!

My favorite scenes . . . ohhh, I LOVED the skating, that was such a unique setting and I loved how much fun and adventure it was. Annnnnnd: hehe, I chuckled big time at the bet. Those dances . . . :D

I also really, really dug the British feel of this short story. It's close to Kiwi speak for the most part, so I felt right at home. ;)

Two of the things I highlighted:

Why in the name of all that Joss Whedon holds dear would he write something like that?

(Points for being a Joss Whedon fan! I, too, am one!)

. . . hastily buttered and Marmited piece of toast . . .

(Gimme. Now. Seriously.)

What a light, fun summer read. Or autumn, or winter, or whenever--just give this story a go. I foresee this author going places!

This reminds me of my younger days playing mmorpgs. Id spend hours and hours of playing with little to no sleep. This story actually did happen in real life. A friend of mine of told that his guildmate became good friends with a female character in game and when they met in real life the other person turned out to be a transgender. They fell in love and became a couple. Anyway, this was just an ok read for me. It would have been great if we got to read how the friendship grew in game before they've met in real life.

Do you like surprises?
I do, I love them!
What a fun surprise this was. I mean, not the great writing (hallo? This is the lovely Olley White. Course it's going to be smashing!)

I'm talking about the surprise inside the story.
Two online friends decide to push the computer screens aside and meet...
in the flesh & blood.
*butterflies*
Uhhh, is that another dude?
Oh really?
Huh?
Well, that's ummmm,
SURPRISE!
This adorable story touches on many things that I believe in....but most importantly,
Who the person is on the outside is not always important...if you know their heart, you know them.
The beautiful (sometimes unexpected) wrapping is just a shell. What matters most is what lies inside the shell.
Loved, loved, loved it some more.
*hugs book*

Do yourself a favor today...
snag this book, it'll squeeze you tight and leave you feeling warm and sunshiny.

psst, did you SEE the gorgeous wrapping of this story?

The perfect flavor of sweet. I loved the development of the relationship between Max and Stefan and I could really feel the friendship between them first. It made their relationship that much better to me.

My favorite thing though had to be Max's voice through the whole story. Stefan was not what he imagined, but it didn't keep him from being honest about his feelings. While slowly discovering his sexuality wasn't exactly what he had always believed it to be, he didn't let that keep him from exploring his feelings and he always kept Stefan's feelings in mind too. It was really refreshing to read about someone so incredibly centered and open. It didn't matter what flavor his HEA came wrapped up in, he was just so appreciative of the happy he found with Stefan there was no way he was going to let it go.

A truly romantic and completely charming story.

Looking for angst free and something super sweet? Look no further.

Stefan and Max are trés adorbs. I loved how their story started and I loved how they came to realise how they felt about each other. It was a little rushed and I would of liked more of them as a couple and more about how their relationship impacted on their lives but it is a short so I know it's not possible to give a huge amount of follow-up.

Both men are sweet and lovely and I wanted to give hugs. There was not much smexy though which was disappointing (I like nookie and I don't care who knows it) but I LOVED their first kiss.

This is part of 'Loves Landscapes' which is just such an amazing resource, totally worth checking out if you have not yet done so.

Serviceable, but I still found myself skimming. That could be mood though. Meaning, I've been in a mood and it could have dragged down my enjoyment of the story.

I don't think so though. Sometimes you just enjoy something. This was not one of those times.

Plus this was the slowest burn of all slow burns and then I didn't 1. get butt sex or 2. get any on page sex at all.

Nothing more than kisses.

Bah! That did nothing to help my mood.

I want to jizz in the cover! Beautiful!

Though the story didn't suck me in like the cover did. I got bored and it didn't really held my attention. It was fine though. The build up was long for a short story. And there was no tension (or in my perspective, there was none)

Charming story that had me grinning throughout.

I loved that oh, so awkward moment when Max realized who Stef was. So funny, and so adorable. What a great start :D

It was great to get Stef's POV, too. To watch him process his attraction to Max and struggle with hiding it or risking their friendship on the chance for more.

And Max’s growing awareness that something was happening, but not exactly understanding what that was...

He wanted Stefan to say the words— but he didn’t want to know what words Stefan was going to say. He yearned to hear them, and also dreaded hearing them, despaired at having to face a truth he wasn’t ready for.

The ball was in his court, of that Max was certain, but quite what he wanted to do with it he wasn’t sure.

...and confused as all get out by some of his reactions to Stefan.

And that moment where he acknowledges his attraction to Stefan. Nerves, excitement, it's all there.

Early on, there was a bit too much telling, especially through inner reflections, but that was soon forgotten as I continued to read so many wonderful scenes. Scenes filled with great lines that had me laughing or that melted my heart. Scenes with little details that showed so much. So good.

Sweet, sexy...that first kiss? *sigh*...a perfect story for curling up with a blanket and reading.

Side note:
I was able to add several new words to my Brit speak dictionary :)

Ho hum.....

This is a case of both the book and myself being at fault for inspiring any sort of excitement. I admit to being in a “meh” mood, this book did nothing to dispel my mehness. In fact, I fear that it increased the meh factor exponentially.

I suppose it was sweet, but GFY with zero angst and indecision on the part of the “straight” guy rings false to me.

I also couldn’t help comparing the trope of mistaken gender via online gaming to the amazing Looking for Group by Alexis Hall. This is an unfair comparison because: Alexis Hall.

Super cute and sweet GFY story with dancing, dogs and roller skating. GFY is generally not my cuppa, but this was fun and didn't have the "he'll never like me in that way" angst that puts me off GFY. Well done!

PS - if anyone has a visual of the roller skating chariot pose, I would love to see it. I couldn't find anything.
