The Senator

Rate this book
US Senator Oliver Michaels of Maine campaigned on the hopes of changing Washington. One year after becoming the youngest senator in Congress, Oliver finds himself disheartened by systemic bureaucracy, partisan finger-pointing, the power of lobbyists, and the collapse of his marriage. When New York Times reporter Alex Broussard shows up at his office, Oliver is presented with a shocking corruption scheme involving two congressmen, the head of the Environmental Protection Agency, and a chemical manufacturer.

With this real opportunity to clean up dirty DC politics, Alex reignites Oliver’s pledge to help people lost in messy legislative battles and abandoned by government in sacrifice zones. Yet, lofty political aspirations aren’t the only things burning with passion. Working side by side, Alex and Oliver, once an item in college, realize feelings still linger for one another.

Alex and Oliver’s efforts to expose the unlawful plot also uncovers the fact that they are pawns in a rigged game hosted by those who will do anything to keep their positions of power and their wallets padded - even kill. The stakes continuously rise, putting Alex, Oliver, and their family and friends in grave danger. Each must decide what’s more important; the safety of their loved ones or the health of the public.

First and foremost, a large thank you to NetGalley, Maya Golden Bethany and Dreamscape Media for providing me with a copy of this publication, which allows me to provide you with an unbiased review.

Always excited to get my hands on a new author's work, I turned to this debut political thriller novel by Maya Golden Bethany. The author delivers a gripping story, while also adding undertones of personal relationships and determination to work outside the box for the betterment of others. While I had not heard of Maya Golden Bethany before, I am pleased that I found this book, as the storytelling is both gripping and relatable in the current political climate. This is a story that pits the 'little guy' against the larger corporation and political establishment. Not to be missed by anyone needing a great political thriller by a new author on the scene.

During his inaugural Senate campaign, Oliver Michaels sought to convince his constituents in Maine that he wanted to change the way things ran in Washington. While this might seem a daunting task, Michaels had never done things because they were easy. A year after winning his seat and being the youngest senator in Congress, Senator Michaels notices how broken things are in the nation's capital, where backroom deals and lobbyists run the show, rather than letting the elected officials debate and argue for advancements. Senator Michaels has also noticed his marriage crumbling, partly due to his work, but also the lack of connection with his wife, who wants all the glitz and glamour.

When Senator Michaels receives a visit from a determined individual, he cannot say no and listens to what she has to say. New York Times reporter Alex Broussard has a story on which she is working that could prove to be front-page news and highly scandalous. She has a source that there is a corruption scheme involving two congressmen, the head of the Environmental Protection Agency, and a chemical manufacturer. The locals are suffering most, but no one is doing a thing about it. This could be Senator Michaels' key to changing the Washington narrative.

After waffling over what a single senator could do, Michaels is rejuvenated as Alex reminds him about his pledge to make a difference, They make some calls and appear in person to ask the tough questions in rural Indiana, which ruffles some feathers and leads many to begin panicking. Senator Michaels turns up the heat with questions and investigations, which sends chills up the spines of those in Washington, which are augmented when they realise that he will not go away. Drastic measures will have to be taken to stop the attention shone on this matter. Senator Michaels is running on adrenaline to get answers and also remembers the relationship he shared with Alex in college. Both have him determined not to stop as he hopes to impress the reporter.

Both Alex and Senator Michaels find that they are but small pieces in the larger governmental system and could be painting a target on themselves. With little time and a great deal of determination, both Sentor Michaels and Alex Broussard must decide how far to go when trying to derail what’s happening. Is it worth a life or two to save those of an entire community? A great debut novel that had me turning pages well into the night!

I love a good political thriller, particularly by those who are new to the scene. The fresh look at the genre can usually bring about some great stories and keep me energised to explore further, especially in these trying political times. Maya Golden Bethany delivers a jarring look at corruption in Washington with a strong narrative that kept me reading as i wanted to learn more. The foundation of the story is nothing unique, but is highly entertaining and kept me pushing forward. Great character development provides a connection to the story and those who push it along. Typical but also unique in their flavouring, Bethany offers the reader someone who care for and despise. Plot points are crisp and kept me on edge as I sought to see just how far two determined peple would go to change the American political system. A must-read and I hope to see more by the author soon!

Kudos, Madam Bethany, for a strong debut thriller.

Thank you NetGalley, Dreamscape Media and Maya Golden Bethany for this arc audiobook copy. I will be giving my honest review.

The story follows NYT reporter Alex Broussard and young US senator Oliver Michaels. Alex reaches out to Oliver after she receives an anonymous tip about congressmen & other powerful figures colluding in a corruption scheme. The past relationship between the two as college sweethearts adds an interesting layer to the already intriguing story. Ooh and Oliver is a former pro NFL guy which was fun.
Political thriller/suspense isn’t typically my go to but that might have to change because this had me so locked in from start to finish. The pacing and dialogue were as well suited together as the narrator was for the audiobook. The narrator was excellent at shifting her voice for the different characters or moods. Not to mention her timing was impeccably and had me not pushing higher than 1.25. GWhich seems like a small thing but it makes so much of a difference). If like me you’re a fan of Scandal and/or Erin Brokovich you’ll enjoy this storyline.

This is largely a political thriller and the story felt both familiar and relatable. The main characters are a reporter and the youngest Senator to sit in Congress who was once a professional football player. I wasn't deeply invested in the characters in the beginning of the novel as they felt somewhat two dimensional. Despite that, the story itself was interesting. I think this suffered mostly from pacing issues at the beginning. When consuming a thriller, I prioritize my interest being piqued and for the action to move relatively quickly over character development or growth. Once the story got interesting, about 30% in, I was invested. I think this is a first novel and some minor faults are expected.

The mystery itself was delightfully twisted and I truly enjoyed the political focus of the story. The romance plot felt a bit thin and unnecessary. This had great bones and I think as this author continues in her craft the pacing issues at the start of the novel will naturally work themselves out. I want to stress that my initial impatience with the beginning of this novel was rewarded with how the story grew and ultimately resolved itself. I look forward to reading more from this author in the future.

This audiobook is narrated by Imani Jade Powers. Imani's narration was sheer perfection. I enjoyed how easily I was able to keep the characters separated based on her inflection and tone. The narration really elevated this novel.

Thank you to Maya Golden Bethany, Dreamscape Media, and NetGalley for the opportunity to listen to and review this audiobook. All opinions and viewpoints expressed in this review are my own.

In her debut novel, "The Senator," Maya Golden Bethany ventures into the realm of political intrigue intertwined with environmental health—a premise that promises a fresh perspective on political thrillers, particularly appealing to those in the public health sector such as myself. However, while the plot holds significant potential, the execution was not the greatest.

The narrative skims over the environmental health concerns that form the crux of the story, offering only a superficial exploration of these critical issues. Structurally, the novel adopts a point-of-view that feels more akin to a stage script than a dynamic narrative. Detailed descriptions of character movements and actions, while perhaps intended to provide clarity, instead become a distraction, hindering immersion and engagement. This approach contributes to characters that appear flat and underdeveloped, with reactions that occasionally verge on melodrama.

Transitions between scenes are abrupt and lack clear demarcation, leading to confusion about the setting and perspective. This disjointedness disrupts the reading experience, making it challenging to maintain a coherent understanding of the plot's progression. I found myself going back and rereading sections to feel sure that I was making sense of things.

The conclusion attempts to resolve all plot threads, seemingly paving the way for a sequel. However, this effort results in an ending that feels a wee bit unrealistic. A more open-ended finale, leaving certain elements to the reader's imagination, might have provided a more satisfying and thought-provoking closure. This could have easily been achieved by ending a few chapters earlier.

while "The Senator" presents a storyline with considerable promise, its potential is undermined by narrative choices and writing style. The novel earns a 2 out of 5 stars, acknowledging the intriguing plot but critiquing the execution that ultimately detracts from an enjoyable, memorable reading experience.

The Senator is a fast-paced, environmental p0itical thriller. It is also a stand-alone read.

Alex Broussard is a reporter for the New York Times. She has received anonymous package with information regarding a chemical spill and two US Senators they believe to be corrupt. After much thought she reaches out to Oliver Michaels who campaigned about his hope to change Washington for the better.

One year after becoming the youngest senator in Congress, Oliver finds himself disillusioned by the bureaucracy and the power of the lobbyists. Alex arrives at his office and gives Oliver the package she received. While he is saddened to see it, he declines to help Alex who is shocked by how he has become beaten down so quickly and refuses to help her.

Alex asks a co-worker to help her investigate the reports. Between the two of them, they find themselves in danger. Meanwhile Oliver has a change of heart and gets on board to find the truth and take down the corrupt senator.

The book starts off a little slow. It wasn't until halfway through that I found myself hooked. It took a bit of time to tell the various stories and tie them all together. Once that happened it was a wonderful ride.

I received an ARC from NetGalley for an unbiased review.

Maya Golden Bethany’s debut novel is smart and written with good research about environmental pollution. There was intrigue and suspense within the story and a built in romantic entanglement. There is definitely politics involved as the title suggests but it felt more about the reporter and the pursuit to uncover a scandal. I would say there is a lot of the story that gets buttoned up rather neatly and so there wasn’t a lot of unexpected nuances. There’s a bit of a cliffhanger in the epilogue so I’m curious if this book will become a series. I would enjoy reading more from this author. The audiobook is great with a pleasant narrator who can voice both sexes with nuance. 3.75 stars rounded up.

I love me a good old fashioned Washington D.C. thriller and this book hit the spot. This story reminded me of the Dupont case (real life case) but with a twist. The story kept me wanting to hear more and the characters were very interesting. I did like the entanglement between the main characters and the narrator was spot on!! If you are a fan of a thriller and want to go for a ride listen to this book.

The Senator, by Maya Golden Bethany had me entertained from start to finish. While the premise of chemical pollution by large corporations making families sick is one that I have encountered before, this story is unique because it is wrapped up with a bow as a tantalizing political thriller.

The reader is introduced to Senator Oliver Michaels, from the state of Maine. He is a young politician who ran for office on the promise to shape up Washington DC and be a representative of the people. After a year in the trenches, his spirit has been broken. When his old friend Alex shows up with evidence of corruption, dirty insider dealings and a government coverup, she elicits Oliver's help and helps reignite the passion in him that brought him to Washington. As the story begins to unravel, Alex and Oliver find themselves and those they care about in grave danger.

While the story is in some ways predictable, it has its share of plot twists and an ending that I found satisfying as a reader. It gives insight into the inner workings of the political system and the corruption that runs rampant. The characters are dynamic and well developed. If only politicians in real life were more like Oliver Michaels; passionate, driven with good morals, conviction and commitment to representing the people, they might be able to make a real difference.

I would like to thank Rising Action Publishing Company for the ARC copy of this book to read and review. I truly enjoyed it and hope to see more from the author in the future.

Thank you Netgalley for a free copy of this ARC. All thoughts and opinions in this review are my own.

“The Senator” was an entertaining and exciting political thriller. As someone who is not from the US, it was easy for me to follow along and get a general idea of the inner workings of US politics, and relate to themes of corruption, and health / environmental issues. I love how the book highlights the struggles of the ordinary worker and elevates the role of journalism / free press in exposing those who abuse power and try to get away with it. If I’m being honest, i think Alex Broussard felt more like the main character vs Sen. Oliver Michaels, but both of them we’re given their chance to shine.

I could see what the author was trying to do but listening to this I didn't feel like it was the right person for it and the fact the woman was playing the male parts put me off
I knew the plot twists unfortunately so not much of a hype for me.

I would still be willing to try another maybe reading it would've given me a change of feeling.

I received a copy of this book thanks to the author (Maya Golden Bethany), her author and the fine folks at NetGalley in return for an honest review.

When a young senator, Oliver Michaels, from the state of Maine achieves office, he entered the world of federal politics with the wide eyes of a young doe. However, after a year in office, the blinders have started to lower. He finds himself disheartened by systemic bureaucracy, partisan finger-pointing, the power of lobbyists, and the collapse of his marriage. When New York Times reporter Alex Broussard shows up at his office, Oliver is presented with a shocking corruption scheme involving two congressmen, the head of the Environmental Protection Agency, and a chemical manufacturer.

It is at this point that New York Times reporter Alex Broussard, Michaels’ college girlfriend, contacts him about an anonymous tip she’s received about collusion between two Senators, the head of the Environmental Protection Agency, and a corporate polluter. According to her source, the three individuals are embroiled in a pay-to-play scheme that has allowed industrial malfeasance to continue unchecked, with the dumping of tons of chemical waste into the waterway of a small, rural, Indiana town. Spiking cancer and respiratory illnesses in the area have concerned residents for decades, but it is not until Broussard and her colleagues begin investigating that the scope of the political scheme is uncovered. As the truth emerges, the culprits know they’re in trouble, but rather than come clean they concoct plans to retain their toehold on power.

With this real opportunity to clean up dirty DC politics, Alex reignites Oliver’s pledge to help people lost in messy legislative battles and abandoned by the government in sacrifice zones. Yet lofty political aspirations aren’t the only things burning with passion. Working side by side, Alex and Oliver, once an item in college, realize their feelings still linger for one another.

It’s a tense and well-wrought setup that involves a slew of people – including mafia hitmen – and numerous federal agencies. While the latter work in tandem, suffice it to say that the novel has a happy ending, and anyone needing an infusion of progressive populism – as well as an example of a politician with humility, integrity, and grit – will get a hefty dose.

Alex and Oliver’s efforts to expose the unlawful plot also uncover the fact that they are pawns in a rigged game hosted by those who will do anything to keep their positions of power and their wallets padded - even kill. The stakes continuously rise, putting Alex, Oliver, and their family and friends in grave danger. Each must decide what’s more important; the safety of their loved ones or the health of the public.

The book contains solid characters and a glimpse into the "sewer" of politics as the reader is exposed to the money and the corruptions faced by nascent politicians as they begin their ascent into the political realm. I found that the story was solid but was a little slow at times. I would give this book three and a half stars (which rounds to four on Goodreads).

As with most of my literary ramblings, these are just my thoughts.

This is a debut novel about political intrigue with environmental health sprinkled in.

Oliver Michaels is a newly elected US Senator from the state of Maine and he believes he can change the world. He learns really quickly that he isn't going to magically clean house in DC. Bureaucracy is a beast he much learn to climb.

New York Times reporter Alex Broussard shows up at his office, and tells him about possible corruption involving a chemical company, and high level government officials that let too much slide. Side note, she and Oliver were an item in college. He's married, and to the outside eye, his marriage is perfection. In the marriage, things are turning quickly toward divorce. Alex is an added complication.

Oliver decides to help Alex expose the environmental health concerns and the corruption surrounding the seemingly bought silence surrounding it. The more they uncover, the more they realize this game is rigged heavily against them. The bad guys will do anything to silence them and no one is safe.

This is not a direct comparison, but this definitely has a feel of Erin Brockovich, with the little guy fighting the environmentally damaging Goliath. This book is written in a fast action format that will lend itself very well to the big screen. The build in the book as each layer is uncovered was mostly excellent, although abrupt in a few spots which made it trickier to follow. I love a fast paced full of action book and this book hits the mark!

I do wish it had more about the environmental issue. I feel like you had to read between the lines to connect those dots.

I listened to this book on audio and the narration is superbly done and well paced.

Thank you to NetGalley, the author, and Dreamscape Media for the advanced copy in return for an honest review.

'the senator' is a political thriller that follows oliver michaels, who becomes the youngest senator in congress. he soon finds himself struggling with systemic bureaucracy and a crumbling marriage.
when alex broussard, a new york times journalist and his ex-girlfriend, brings him evidence of a major scandal, they begin an investigation together. as they dig deeper, they uncover a deadly conspiracy that threatens not only their own lives, but also those of the people closest to them.

when i picked this book up, i expected romance in it, but i was hoping it would be a side plot. it felt more like a romantic thriller than a political one, despite the premise, which i was immediately interested in. unfortunately, it didn't quite deliver in the way i had hoped. the plot mainly followed reporters working to uncover a pollution issue.

nevertheless, i still think it was a solid debut novel by maya golden bethany. the storyline kept me engaged thorought. while it wasn't especially unique, i still wanted to see how things would unfold.
the book was thought-provoking, and i appreciated the exploration of relatable, timely themes like corruption.

the characters were well-developed and had emotional depth. oliver, in particular, stood out - he was honest and moral. i wish real-life politics had more people like him - though, i think that's unlikely to happen.
i also really liked the relationship between him and alex. their connection felt authentic, and i was rooting for them.

i really appreciated the mention of environmental issues. the pollution research was well done and informative.

the audiobook, narrated by imani jade powers,
was good. her voice was well-paced and engaging, but i believe the production would've been way better if there was a male voice, or, even better - a larger cast. since there were a lot of characters, at times i found it hard to distinguish who was speaking.

overall - i had a good experience with this one.
i'm open to reading more from maya golden bethany, and i'd recommend this book to anyone who enjoys political dramas with a few twists.

Maya Golden Bethany's debut political thriller, The Senator, takes readers into the high-stakes world of Washington D.C. politics. The story follows U.S. Senator Oliver Michaels, who finds himself trying to navigate the corruption in Washington. When his college ex-girlfriend, New York Times reporter Alex Broussard, approaches him with evidence of a corruption scheme, Oliver sees an opportunity to make a real difference. As they delve deeper, they uncover a dangerous conspiracy that puts their lives—and those of their loved ones—in jeopardy.

This was the first book I’ve read by Maya Golden Bethany, and I’m really glad I picked it up. The story was gripping from the start and packed with action, drama, and just enough mystery to keep me hooked. I loved the political backdrop and found the plot engaging throughout. The supporting characters added a lot of color and energy, and the pacing and dialogue felt just right. There were plenty of twists that kept things interesting, and it never felt slow. It was just a solid, entertaining read that delivered exactly what I was hoping for.

The audiobook, narrated by Imani Jade Powers, was excellent. Her voice was clear, well-paced, and made it easy to distinguish between the different characters. The performance added a lot to the story and made the experience even better.

I received an ARC through "NetGalley" and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

The story begins with Oliver Michaels, a new Senator from Maine, attempting to get a bill passed in the Senate. The vote was not close it was 74 to 26 against. Later Oliver receives a call from Alex Nroussard, a former girlfriend and reporter for the NY Times. She has received something from an unknown party and wants Oliver's help. It was an envelope that contained pictures of two Senators and a Director of the EPA. It was taken a a chemical plant where it was impacting the surrounding area, Oliver told her no, but when he went to a fundraiser, he saw something which made him change his mind.

Alex had one of her associates go to the area and look into it from that end while she would check other items associated with it. It turns out that the individual that was on the scene by the plant was attacked. Later an attack was made on Oliver, his wife, his father-in-law and Alex. Everybody but Alex was injuref and sent to the hospital. This brought the Federal Govt. onto the scene.

To discover what was being examined and why, who the individuals in the picture were, why Oliver and the others were attacked as well as how it all worked out, then you need to read the book.

The ending is unexpected. This is definitely a book you should read!

⭐️⭐️⭐️½ – Smart, engaging, and timely

I really enjoyed this book overall. It’s a sharp, fast-paced political thriller that pulls you into the chaos of Washington D.C. and doesn’t let go. The story follows Senator Oliver Michaels, who starts off hopeful about making change but quickly finds himself drowning in the mess of politics, corruption, and personal heartbreak. That felt pretty real, honestly.

What I appreciated most was the emotional depth. Oliver isn’t just a politician—he’s a person struggling with disappointment, divorce, and a second chance at love. The connection between him and Alex, the journalist who comes back into his life, felt authentic. Their shared past gave the story a more human core, and I was rooting for them both.

The plot has some great twists and raises some important questions about power, loyalty, and what people are willing to risk to do the right thing. There were a few moments where things got a little over-the-top, but the message behind it all—the need for integrity in politics and the importance of standing up for what’s right—really hit home.

If you like political thrillers with heart, this one is definitely worth checking out. It’s compelling, thoughtful, and a good reminder that even in a rigged system, people can still choose to fight back.

Thank you to NetGalley for the ALC of the book.

Author: Maya Golden Bethany
Narrated by Imani Jade Powers

This is Maya Golden Bethany’s Debut novel and it was a hit for me! This was a fast paced, gripping political thriller. This follows a New York Times reporter Alex Broussard. She receives an anonymous package about two US senators who are believed to be corrupt along with information on a chemical spill that happened. Thats when she reaches out to Oliver Michaels who is the youngest senator in Congress, who campaigned on how he hoped to change Washington for the greater good. Oliver being in congress for just about a year has had his spirit broken down and is run down. Alex brings him the package she got in hopes that he would help her, and this is when they start looking around and things begin to unravel. They find themselves and their loved ones in dangers from what they had been uncovering.
I really enjoyed the plot twists and the suspense of what is to come next. Having worked in and studied politics I can see how Oliver became run down so quickly. Maya did a really good job at capturing and giving us insight on the inner most workings of the government. I wish that there were more Olivers now a days with the passion and drive to change things for the greater good.

Thank you NetGalley and Dreamscape Media for the ALC audiobook. All opinions are my own.

The Senator is written by new to me author Maya Golden Bethany. I want to thank NetGalley, Maya Golden Bethany and Dreamscape Media for allowing me to listen to the audiobook of this work. I devoured this book in less then 24 hours. Once I got into it (which was within chapter one) I could not stop. Senator Oliver Michaels and his wife, Lena are young and in Washington, Oliver is a former NFL football player who had beat out an aged congressman. He has bright ideas and wants to give back to the :"little people" However he learns quickly that politics seems to be more and more about lining your pockets.

Oliver's former college friend, Alex is now a reporter with The NY Times. She is anonymously sent information that shows coverups in chemical disposals that is causing harm to land, people and animals. She appeals to Oliver for his help - and at first he does not want anything to do with it. Until he witnesses a shady interaction with two tenured senators.

However, once the investigation begins it becomes clear that no-one is safe. Those whose pockets have been receiving kickbacks will make sure no-one is left standing to cast blame on them.
This was a well written, well read aloud story. The narrator was perfect and her voice was soothing,. I really enjoyed this book - and cannot wait to see what the author writes next.

Thanks to NetGalley and Dreamscape Media for the digital copy of this audiobook; I am leaving this review voluntarily.

While I had hoped for political intrigue with a side of romance, what I got instead was a romantic suspense novel that takes place in Washington, D.C. Oliver is an ex-NFL player who was elected as a congressional representative. He’s there to “drawn the swamp” and get things done. However, a year into his term, he’s utterly disillusioned with most everything. Too much toeing the party line, too many lobbyists and special interests, too much graft.

Oliver’s old college flame is a reporter for the New York Times. She approaches him with a corruption scheme she’s uncovered. He’s enthusiastic to working with Alex and do some real good, make some real change in Washington. But as they investigate and collect more evidence, its clear that people are watching them, putting themselves and their family at risk.

I thought the writing was fine, if somewhat predictable. In fact, there were few real surprises, and as I mentioned, not as much political intrigue as I hoped. This audiobook was great to pass the time, but in a month’s time, I will have forgotten most of it. I do have to say that while I enjoyed the narration by Imani Jade Powers, this is the sort of book that needs multiple narrators because there are so many characters, it’s hard to keep track.

2.5 stars rounded up.

I would say this was more of a romantic thriller than a political one despite the premise being that a US Senator and a New York Times reporter are trying to expose EPA violations, money laundering, corruption, and disregard for human life.

My biggest issue was that Oliver and Alex were so stereotypical and I didn’t really care for either of them. They were painted as so heroic and the good guys despite the fact they were carrying on an affair while trying to make the bad guys pay. This white hat vs dark forces theme was carried throughout and each character was quickly put into one stereotype or the other. I found most of the reactions and behavior of the various characters to verge on the unbelievable. But, sounds like our sainted couple gets their happy ending as expected. The whole concept of a savior team taking down corrupt politicians and manufacturers will remind you of many other books and movies that handled the issue in better told stories.

Listened to the audiobook narrated by Imani Jade Powers. She did a fine job trying to voice all the characters but this production would have benefited by using a larger cast, or at the very least, a male voice. There were a lot of different characters and sometimes hard to tell which was speaking.

This is the first book of this author that I have read, and I enjoyed it from the start.

In this book, Alex Broussard a reporter for the New York Times comes into an anonymous tip about a chemical factory that is polluting a town in Indiana, and it being covered up by people in Washington and the EPA as well as a mob connection. She seeks assistance from her friend from college, US Senator Oliver Michaels agrees to help her while she teams up with her coworkers to uncover the cover up and work to expose it while the danger to them mounts.

This was a good read for me. It was well written, but the primary focus was on the reporters working to uncover the polluting and not really the Washington connection - at least until the end. Also, when I think of thriller it usually has more of a buildup then what I experienced in this read. Based on the description and title of the book I thought that there would have been more with the senator than with the reporters in this book.

Overall, it was a good read that I did enjoy and would recommend to others.

3.5 stars

When Alex, a reporter for the NY Times, stumbles onto a cover-up that scales to the upper echelons of the U.S. government, she goes to her college friend, Oliver, who is a state senator, for help. As the two get deeper into cover ups and payoffs, they put themselves, their family, and their friends in danger.

This felt like a pretty typical (and mostly successful) political thriller, in that you don't need to understand every detail in order to be swept up into the plot and feelings of danger. I did wish the author had made some of the relationship dynamics (i.e. Alex and Oliver) a bit more clear, so that things that happened later in the novel felt more organic, rather than a crammed in plot device. Overall, this is a solid choice for those interested in this genre.

The Senator is out April 15, 2025.

If you enjoy political thrillers, this is a nice one.

Oliver Michaels is a Senator, who's campaign ran on the promises to clean up Washington, but quickly became disheartened as he experienced all the barriers in Washington, and his marriage falling apart. Alex Broussard is a reporter trying to uncover corruption between the head of the EPA and a chemical company. Together, they work for a common goal of a better government for a better country.

This book is well written, and a fast paced thriller. I enjoyed the entire book and couldn't put it down. Imani Jade Powers, the narrator, is fantastic and her performance really drew me into the story.

Thank you to NetGalley and Dreamscape Media for the ARC of this book. Look for it to be published April 15, 2025!

I received an advanced copy of "The Senator" by Maya Golden Bethany, a thrilling novel centered around a current U.S. Senator embroiled in a mystery involving the EPA and his colleagues. This book captivated me with its fast-paced writing and strong character development. Although the style occasionally bordered on cheesy, it added a fun element that I thoroughly enjoyed.

The evolving relationship between the two main characters was particularly engaging, and I'm eager to see what the author writes next. For fans of political thrillers like Stacey Abrams' "Rogue Justice," this book will be a delightful read. The combination of political intrigue and personal dynamics makes "The Senator" a compelling addition to the genre.

If you enjoy Louise Penny, you should like this book. Maya Golden Bethany's novel debut is an exciting, fast-paced political thriller. It's John Grisham meets Erin Brockovich, and kept me entertained the entire way through. A chemical spill, a reporter, and a young Senator with morals adds up to a spectacular Washington D.C. thriller, plus throw in a bit of romantic entanglement for the cherry on top.
I was pleasantly surprised by this book and will read more from this author as she publishes.
Very well done.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Maya Golden Bethany for an advance reader’s copy in exchange for my honest review.

Senator Oliver Michaels ran a campaign to make some changes in Congress. Oliver is a former college football star and NFL player. Every bill Oliver introduces gets defeated but he does not quit. When a former flame and current New York Times reporter finds some very damaging information regarding some Oliver's congressional nemesis', Oliver is hesitant at first but when the evidence begins to pile up, he knows he must do something. What extremes will they go to keep the information from being made public.
