This shit demolished my comfort zone, chopped the chunks up, lit it afire, and then fed the ashes to the crazy cat lady for good measure.
Triggers
Well, thanks for the effing warning ~
I feel it's imperative that I warn readers this book involves fairly detailed scenes w/ a mid-age teen, mention of sexual abuse/pedophiles/underage sex between men and the MC as young as 13-years-old, and graphic rape of her at 18-years-old.
THE AUTHOR's VAUGE DISCLAIMER DOES NOT WARN READERS SUFFICIENTLY!! And I would not have read this had I known those young teen sexual situation-triggers existed! Sinden, please add an appropriate warning!
M/M and F/F sex scenes are also present. Violence.
Holy MFIng SHIT!
Uhm, about every humiliation and depravity you can imagine goes on here. No hearts! No flowers! If you're looking for an asshole MMC with a soft touch... Move on along. If you're looking for a FMC with a gumdrop vagina and sweet thoughts... Move on along. Love... Ha - run quickly!
Every single person in this book has several screws and bolts lose, or just fing missing all together. Seriously!
The female MC doesn't give you a lot to work with to empathize with her plight. Yes, she's been conditioned to be an angry, victim-mentality, submissive personality, but (and it kills me to say this) she asks for a lot of the bad shit in her life (post farmhouse) by continuing to make dumbass decisions that make her own damn self the victim and literally lay the welcome mat out for people to tie advantage of her.
It's kind of like jumping into a herd of buffalo and then limping off wondering why the fuck so many buffalo trampled your ass.
The story is encompassing in that you, the reader, are drawn into this shitstorm and you CANT look away without knowing what's destroyed & what survives. So, kudos for making me unable to turn away.
^That Said ^
There are a lot of technical flaws here.
Too much...
The abundance of depravity is overwritten. I mean every person the female MC comes into contact with wants to treat her as a whore, plaything, something to be used up and thrown away?!? Ehh, overboard on the abundance there.
Characters...
The characters are intriguing, and, again, I needed to know where the story took them. So it's not that hooks aren't set. It's more a matter of no one reeling the fish in and frying him up.
There's zero growth here for the MMC. He remains the same unreadable, one-dimensional, superficial, flat character he started the book being. He is a stagnant sociopath and the man behind the curtain who all you see are his shoes.
There's nothing but downward spiral for the FMC, with each experience seeming to strip away anything you thought you might know about her. She's nothing but a sexual shell with a lot of weakness and self-loathing.
Plot...
The plot reached its peak very early with the death at the farmhouse. The rest of the book felt like the author puts readers on a hamster wheel - stationary, no progress - as she distracts from that fact by jingling crazy sex bells.
I expected a solid point and development to be made of this leg of the journey, and I just didn't find it:/
What I did find was a shitload of fuckupedness and some characters that tip the scale of sanity high into the air.
Bottom Line
So it all boils down to... Was the shit good or not? Nope, it was horrible. Could I put it down? Ha, of have had to pry it from my limp fingers. Now, excuse me while I trip on the read now button and fall head first into book two...by accident, of course;)
This is one of the strangest, craziest and most demented books I've ever read. Paige and Aaron are two deranged and damaged individuals. They are meant for each other and feed off each others weird and crazy ways.
“Paige, my name’s Paige,” I blurted out. He stood in front of me, looking down at me with a small nasty smile on his face. “Paige is a good girl’s name. Rachel is more of a whore’s name. It suits you better."
In the beginning I felt sorry for Paige But it soon became apparent that she was the master of her own destiny. Paige was being used by her mother in a con game involving her mother's boyfriends however Paige went along with everything and even seemed to enjoy the games. That is of course until one con game backfired on them. Paige knows all her actions past and present are wrong but she continues anyway deciding this is her fate. Poor Paige, so many tears!!
Aaron is just as sick and twisted as Paige. Aaron takes Paige to an old deserted farm house where he decides to make her his pet. It's during Paige's captivity that an interesting twist begins to emerge. Aron eventually relaxes his binds on Paige and a sick and unbalanced relationship of sorts begins to develop.
“No. You don’t get to sit on the furniture.” He pointed down to the floor. I frowned but did as he said, kneeling on the floor."
This isn't a love story of any kind. Both Paige and Aaron are co dependant on each other. The book does end on a sort of cliff hanger and it seems their dysfunctional relationship will probably continue in book two. I have to give the author credit for her writing and creativity. She kept me engaged through the whole book and I will definitely go on to read the second one.
“I think that’s the nicest thing anyone’s ever said to me,” I managed to say finally. “How pathetic is that?” I felt his hand stroke my hair, and I turned toward him. “You’re a monster. How can the only person I have to look after me be a monster?”
Seriously, one messed up, disturbing head trip. You wanna go off the rails to crazyville, Scars is your one way ticket. Destination full filled! I swear, Paige and Aaron are two of the most screwed up demented people I have ever had the great privilege of reading! Words are not enough to explain the depravity. Now onto the review! I almost hate Paige, the helpless, naïve heroine, trying to figure who she is in the scheme of things. But then you learn her story, feel her suffering and it clicks. She's the lost young woman, life cast aside. So you journey with her, silently cheering her on and hoping to hell she'll find some inner strength or develop a backbone to quit being everyone's doormat. As for Aaron, as far as I'm concerned, he is one devious, sadistic, manipulating bastard! And there you have it, a five star, dark gritty intense read! Yes I'm buying the sequel, just as soon as I'm done typing this review. Ooh but I must mention one thing I didn't like about the story which came later in the book. That was the f/f action, highly unexpected. Would have been nice if it was noted in the summary somewhere as I'm not a big fan. However the encounter thankfully was short, so it was tolerable. So enjoy!
At first, I was lulled into a false sense of complacency even with that opening chapter. But the twist with the diary is what got me in. I didn’t feel much for Aaron until about 50% in the novel, and then, in his own way, he has undeniable chemistry with Rachel. Rachel is strong but she gets broken here. She hasn’t lost her marbles but is more defeated, so I hope that she heals and is stronger in the next book… which I’m going to have to read a few chapters of… 😬
This book is dark. Consists of rape, kidnapping and torture.
Paige is a broken girl, who has learned the skill to trap men into paying and looking after her and her mother. She began when 13, taught by her mother to sleep with men. Her mother says her to sleep with the men (her mother's boyfriends) then they video it, blackmailing the 'boyfriends' taking their money and moving on to the next person; until one day, one man comes back for them. Aaron is a major douchebag and a monster. His character is so hard not to like and unlike. His interactions with Paige is so cruel.
This book definitely stands up to dark expectations.
I finished this last night and waited to rate it. Last night it was a 3 for me. I bumped up a star this morning when the characters still haunted my thoughts.
Paige/Rachel is an idiot. But she was raised that way, so I can't blame her really. And she's sympathetic in all her brokenness.
Aaron is perfect. For a psychopath. And I loved him of course.
The lower rating was due to editing and inconsistencies throughout that distracted me. The sex was hot in spots, not in others (oral is described ad nauseum, but none of the other fun stuff gets more than an almost fade to black comment). The story is all over the place as far as the action - this was both good and bad for me - but the character development isn't there. Both MCs are the same throughout without any arc. Maybe this happens in the next book? I'll be reading it - gotta know what happens with Aaron (yum!) - so I'll let ya know ;)
Upping my rating to four stars after rereading. This was so disturbing the first time I read it, it shocked me a bit. This is one of my favorite dark romance series, absolutely love all three books.
The second attempt I did read it, but after reading book 2, I’m lowering the rating to 2 stars. And even though the book has a romance tag, it doesn’t read like a romance novel.
Spoilers book 1-2.
Book deals with child abuse. - The h sleeps with a few guys. Even after she’s slept with the H. - In book 2 there’s cheating; between the H & ow, but it's one of those situations where the author left it vague so some might not think he was cheating the whole time the h was "with him". Its left to the reader's interpretation. The author did this with all the loose ends which left me quite frustrated.
I chose to believe that he was cheating. Safety readers will want details so here it is:
There is an ow. He smiles at her, looks at her in a way that he does not at the h, and he allows her to touch him. As a reader even you can sense the attraction/connection between these two.
The h is jealous, she doesn't know what kind of relationship he has with the ow, just that he smiles at this ow, acts differently with her. So she asked him one night if he was fucking the ow. He said he was not (and so far we think the ow is nothing, that they have no real relationship). Then a few pages later, the ow shows up at his house and asks him to see her "again." Then the h asks what kind of relationship they have, and the ow answers..they had a thing since he was a teenager (hes 29 in this story). And then when the h asks if they been fucking the whole time that she was living witht he H -a few months).. the ow and the H did not answer or say anything back to the h!
Then the h says she and the ow can share him, and decides to make out with the ow in front of the H, because shes pissed off. next F/F scene - the H stops her (to protect the ow) before oral. After the ow leaves, the h demands that H sleep with her, and he was aroused. (he was getting off on the h and the ow making out. I friggin hated this series! Why didnt anyone give spoilers so I couldve avoided this mess!)
There is also a FF scene (h and another female Dom) before the h moved in with the H.
There is even an orgy scene where the straight h is forced to go down on a woman. This is RAPE. As a straight female reader, I found this disgusting. The author should have tagged this as a FF or a ménage series, and please remove the romance tag!!!
There is supposed to be a love story between the H and the h somewhere her, but it’s a joke. There is zero chemistry between them. They’re like robots. And although he is supposed to be "obsessed" with the h, even that was contrived. The H is a 1-dimensional robot.
This series also had too many plot holes and loose ends that left me feeling frustrated.

DNF 20%
I thought this would be like Siren by Jamie Roberts. An abused girl who became a kickass strong femme fatale taking revenge on people who hurt her….I was wrong.
I DNF this early, I hate fucking weak females and this girl seemed like one. She’s abused by her mother, gets cheated on by her bf but she’s still willing to stay with him🙄, then she’s kidnapped on her way to her cheating BFs house by a psycho to get even more abused….
Dear authors please write about empowering females… watching a weak butterfly getting tortured isn’t my idea of fun.
Ummmm wtf did I just read?? That's the first time I've honestly said that.
I wish I knew what to say. Did I like it? Yes and no. Did I keep reading, despite a whole lotta really terrible things happening and a meandering plot that didn't make much sense? Yes.
I liked Paige and I hated Paige. First off, I don't believe she was a 'natural' submissive. She was trained to be that way. In the beginning, it seemed like she would fight for herself. By the end, she truly was a broken doll, as another character described her. I got a tiny glimpse of hope near the end when she turned the tables on Aaron a bit, but then she went back to being a sub. I think that's fucking tragic.
I was intrigued by Aaron but I felt he was a true psychopath who would always act without rhyme or reason. We don't get his POV so he was an enigma.
3.75-4 stars. Somehow, I liked it. I guess? Not really sure.
It was dark and dirty with an evil H that stays evil till the end. Seriously, he has no redeeming qualities. Even the heroine is difficult to like. You feel sorry for her and are drawn into her story but like her? Not a chance. Still, I loved the book in all its dark glory. I could've done without the lesbian action as it's not my cuppa but it was sparse and I can't say it didn't contribute to the overall storyline so... On to book 2 :)
Did I like this book? I don't know. It's dark as hell but I couldn't stop. If I give this a five star rating does it mean I have a sick mind? Well it didn't give me jollies, instead I was watching a continual trainwreck play out in front of me over and over. This is not romance that's fore sure. The content here is well-written with only a few minor editing issues and like some of the other reviewers I am digging the author's writing style. I can't call anyone in this book a hero or a heroine. Our main character Paige/Rachel is one broken sick pathetic abuse victim. Poor Paige/Rachel can't catch a break. She's put through pure hell but she's done some really terrible things, yet she did it for love of sick Mommy Dearest. I find myself feeling so much compassion for her and hoping she finds an HEA somewhere with out our (hero?) Aaron. Don't get me started on him. I haven't enough time. I haven't met one redeemable character in this whole book except I find myself hoping that maybe Paige/ Rachel will find redemption. I try books like these and almost always come away digusted and like wth did I even bother. In this case, I'm actually on to the second book without a pause. I gobble up this trainwreck like a starved animal. The author is a fluid writer and just grabs you by the blankety blank blank and doesn't let go. It's like a roller coaster ride. Either you pull the brake and say this is too sick just let me off now, or you go along for the ride to be twisted and turned every way imaginable. I'm already on the second book and it's the exact same way. The action, the darkness just take over. There was a time about middle way where I said OK this is so dark, so depressing, and so sick I have to put this down before I need a therapist. However, I am glad I stuck with it. There are digusting triggers on almost every page so you are warned. If you do give this a try just remember to syke yourself up for a some really sick stuff. See some of the reviews below for some triggers. We have a modern day Stormfire here with every trigger imaginable thrown in that Stormfire didn't even touch. Luckily, I am listening to some fluff audiobooks to cleanse my palate during the day. So my advice is to give it a go if you are in the mood for something dark, but you were warned. Don't come crying to me if you get triggered. The author deserves her five stars. This is one of the craziest books I've ever read. I hope she has something out there a little less dark because I'd like to read more of her books in the future just to see how she handles a real romance or a paranormal that doesn't have so many triggers.
Oh this was intense! The heroine doesn't get a fuckin break! She went through a lot... and I mean A LOT. Bad things after another it made me pissed! I just wish she made some right decisions throughout the book, but alas.. she was quite stupid! lol.
Both main characters were pretty fucked up in the head! I'm not kidding, I've never read both main characters to be so wrong in so many levels! The hero is fucked up. He's mean, dominant, cruel and sadist!! Tbh he was more like an anti hero to me. The way he treated the heroine, all the things he did to her, the way he let IT happened... ugh. I just can't!
He's sexy though.. i'll give him that.
Anyway, the story line was good and every chapter had me on the edge. This shit is really not my cup but I found myself completely enraptured by everything!
A warning though, this book is not for the faint of heart. SCARS is a heavy dark, deep shit! There is kidnapping, rape, torture, humiliation, F/F scenes and all that shenanigans!
4.5 stars for me. I can't wait for the continuation of their story.. I just hope the author will be nicer and not put any raping scenes anymore.. coz seriously. Give the heroine a break please.
Reading this book, I kept thinking "anytime now it is going to get good", but that time never came. None of the characters were appealing or endearing in any way. Paige, the main character, had a rough life and I felt bad for her at times, but that was it. She wasn't the type of character that draws you in to a story. Similarly, Aaron was unappealing as well. While he had brief moments of something akin to compassion, those moments were few and far between.
As a whole, the story failed to maintain my interest or illicit any type of emotion. It just fell flat and I'm left wondering why I wasted time finishing this book. I should have known by halfway through that if I hadn't been drawn into the storyline, that it wasn't going to happen. I would describe it as odd and creepy. It definitely wasn't anything I'd have read if I'd known how it all ended up. If I could get back the hours spent reading this one, I'd definitely pass.
This book is about a broken girl who knows only how to swindle men for money. This “skill” is learned from her mother who essentially makes her underage daughter (she began at age 13) sleep with men (mainly her mother’s boyfriends) in order to trap them into paying them. However, little does Paige know that the one man they used is coming back for her.
This story is a dark, erotic, novel. It involves kidnapping, captivity, scenes of rape, and abuse. The main character Paige is hard to like. She is not naïve and innocent like the other girls in similar novel. Her character lacks emotions and is predictable. Readers can understand why Paige is the way she is, but her past and present make her one of those characters that you cannot relate to. Aaron on the other hand is like all those other bad boys that we read in these dark novels. He is the monster, the one we want to hate yet, we enjoy his character anyway. He, like Paige, is also broken. However, we don’t really learn why in this book. I suppose those questions are answered in book #2. This book is certainly not up to par with some of the other dark novels out there but decent none the less. I will read book two in hopes that some of my questions are answered though. Hopefully I will like that one a bit more.
Genre: Dark Erotica
Series Order: Book #1 in the Scars Series (out of 2 books)
Overall Rating: 3.5 Stars - not too original but decent.
Hmm I'm not sure how I feel about this book whether I praise it and give it 4⭐️ Or hate it and give it a 2....I need to think on this. I'll read the series before I make my decision on this book.
A very dark romance, ie not a romance. What this poor girl went through! Read the triggers! Disturbing and twisted and intense. Crazy characters, the girl, Paige, was taken advantage of by everyone, she did some stupid things and her life just spiraled downhill until she was broken. And Aaron the hero/villain who broke her was a cruel psycho killer who doesn’t have a conscience (or? sometimes you wonder). Couldn’t put it down! Not really a cliffhanger but not a HEA either. Glad there is a second book, I want there to be good things coming their way.
This book was recommended by a friend, I knew before I started it would be a dark and disturbing read I also knew it wasn't a standalone the question was will I make it to the second book? I'm not even going to try to give a summary of the book since I'd be sure to give something away. I struggled, really struggled although I have read darker books in the past this one was particularly difficult because it didn't have a single nice character in there, ok there's maybe one but I'm not sure how nice he actually is. At the start I really disliked Paige, the more I read I still disliked her but there were people I disliked more, a lot more. Reading this book became a bit of an obsession, a lot of the time I wasn't enjoying it but I couldn't stop, it was weirdly addictive. And yes now I'm moving straight on to the next book.
I love Sinden’s writing so much, hurts me so much I can’t have her work in my hands. 😭😭 Such a talented writer compare to these raggedy popular ass authors who ain’t shit.
WOW! this book had me hooked read it in one sitting. It was intense I think is one word shocking another but I literally couldn't stop reading. Paige had it bad from all directions, a awful mother that used her badly since she was a child. And Aaron what do I say?? He is as damaged as Paige in his own way. This is not a book for everyone but I think it was brilliant kept me on the edge of my seat the whole way through. this is the first book I have read by this author but not the last, got Memory to start when I finish this review.
This was an okay read. I dont know if I like Paige/Racheal yea she has a crappy mother and a crappy childhood..I really did not feel for her..and that was sad. Aaron..who is he? a killer for the mob? I think he likes her he saves her from some stuff his caring does not come across. There is a second book so maybe I'll get more from that book.
I think I found another favorite author. This book was seriously good. The scary part is going on to the second book. When something is this good, I’m almost scared to read the next book in the series. I hope I’m still happy when I’m done with book 2. Great story, excellent writing, exciting plot that captures your attention and keep it until the very end. I really enjoyed this book.
Really did not like the female lead being so promiscuous but something about this story really kept me engrossed in the book I hope there is a next one.3.5 stars
This book was pretty dark. Some parts were way too dark, especially Paige’s childhood, she deserved so much better. As much as I sympathize with her, she didn’t make liking her an easy job. The girl kept on making stupid decisions, which was annoying.
As for Aaron, he honestly didn’t feel like a real character to me. I think it’s because it was told from Paige’s POV and there was not much told about his life. That man was so toxic and fucked up but the things he did for her at the end. It was kinda sweet (it feels wrong to even say it) but for someone as cruel as him, I found that rather was sweet.
These two were definitely one of the most dysfunctional couple I’ve ever read. The toxicity 🤌🏻 it was addicting to read about. I hope her mother gets what she deserves in the next book, she was an absolute bitch. Hopefully the next book is just as good.
This was really fucked up. Skim read bits and parts and I’m just shocked how many people like this? Just why. Literally no one is likable and everyone keeps doing the WORST things to the MC. The writing is actually really terrible too. And formatted like a first time fanfic.
Not all inclusive, but some content warnings: kidnapping, sexual assault, violence, rape (throughout the book), sex trafficking, child abuse, and underage sex.
I love dark romance books so when I first stumbled upon this book I was so excited; I had very high expectations on this one but sadly, I was sorely disappointed.
This is an unpopular opinion, I suppose, since this book received generally favorable reviews. This book, I don't know1I wouldn't even consider it dark. I don't know why maybe because I'm immuned to freaky shit by now but I've read worst, darker, wicked books than this.
I didn't understand the characters -- I felt oddly disconnected with them. I didn't get Rachel/Paige's reactions and her dumb decisions most of the time and I didn't get Aaron too. I guess they're just too fucked up for me to understand.
For a dark romance, I think the sex scenes in this book are a lot tamer than I'm used to. They aren't graphic and the author skipped most of them -- meaning that we only get a description of them rather than see them actually happen. So yeah.
This is one of my all time favorites. The relationship between these two is dark, and twisted, but very addictive. Sinden West is queen of dark romance, and I loved Scars, Memory, and Aaron. No soppy 'I love you's' in these books but you can feel, despite their messed up relationship, the strong connection between two lost souls.
