Well, my first favorite of the year! It's rare for me to make it out of January without finding some new favorite, but it took me until March to find my first new favorite of the year.

This story really hit close to home and warmed all the right places in my heart. Both Keith and Jill have dealt with tragic loss and are learning how to deal with it and handle it with their faith. A young boy, Kyle, is abused and needy, and needs all their sympathy. This is a tender, heartwarming story about God's provision and everyday gifts to us. I'll definitely be rereading this one.

Like many other people, I received this book free in the mail with an offer to buy other books from "Love Inspired". It sat on my shelf for a long time; romance is not a genre I typically read. I hit a dry spell in my reading recently where I was either not liking or not connecting with what I read. So I picked up "Rainbow's End" thinking I might as well try it. The next time I looked up was 8o pages later. I ended up liking this tale very well.

Yes, it's a romance story; it's Christian in focus and it's clean. As a matter of fact, it was a sweet and emotional story of 3 people who faced horrible life situations but came together as a new family: a woman, a man, and an abused and lonely child. Forgiveness of others as part of emotional healing and the ability to move on (rather than fester and remain bitter) has been a theme that has resonated with me lately, and it was a theme that was well-developed and presented in a compassionate way here.

The characters and setting were interesting, and although I could pretty much see early on how the whole thing was going to end, it was still a journey worth taking.

To lessen the pain of his wife's death, Keith Michaels headed cross-country. Yet though he had reached the Pacific Northwest, he still felt broken, empty and alone. When a sudden storm stranded him on Orcas Island, he sought refuge with the local widow, who was no elderly matron, but a reclusive young woman. What was it about shy Jill Whelan and her charming cottage that made Keith want to stop his wandering ways? Did faith and love await him at Rainbow's End?

I have found some of Irene Hannon's newer books iffy because they weren't of the clean quality I have been used to. This one was written in 2007 under the Love Inspired label, and I found it very sweet and enjoyable. Both Keith and Jill have suffered unbelievable hurts through deaths in their lives. Keith's is internal but Jill wears her pain on the outside and it has caused her to become almost a virtual hermit. A third character who is also suffering severe past hurts is a young child, Kyle. The interactions between the three are poignant and loving as they each help the other to gain peace in life, open up to others, and grow in their faith. Glad to find one that lives up to the writing I expect to read from Irene Hannon.

Favorite Quotes:
"The thing is..God's ways aren't our ways. His plans surpass all our understanding. Seeking a logical explanation for what happened to me..it doesn't make sense to even try. There is no logical, human answer.....Someday, when He and I are face-to-frace, I might be given the wisdom to understand. But for now, it's beyond me. I had to learn to accept without understanding."

"Consider that the disciples themselves had doubts. And they were in the Lord's presence every day. How much harder it is for us to believe without seeing. We're all Thomases to some degree."

".....sometimes saying goodbye to the past is the only way to embrace the future."

"The fact is many times in life bad things happen to us. Unfair things. Things that disrupt our world and reduce us to tears, to anger, to bitterness. No one is immune to those kinds of tribulation....But anger and bitterness are destructive emotions. They isolate us from each other and from God. Where anger and bitterness have taken root, love cannot grow. Nor can the seeds of forgiveness or hope or peace find fertile ground."

This is a great story of hope, redemption, and forgiveness. Two people with tragic pasts that made them doubt in God but they both eventually find their ways back and help each other heal. I loved the story, especially when young Kyle came into the picture. A very quick read definitely worth your time and attention!

If you can beleive this, I actually got this book for free in the mail! It came from a Christian Book Club wanting me to sign up and this was the free gift. I stared at it for a couple days thinking "it's free, how good can it possibly be!?" Well, I picked it up last night, and I'm almost halfway through. 2 hours later, and it's pretty good!

It's about a man and a women who's path's just happen to cross (or was it happenstance?) They've both endured loss and pain in recent years and the man has come close to turning away from God completely. The woman has become closer to God then ever before. She is a recluse and not keen on visitors, she thinks at first they haven't much in common but something in her heart tells her to let him in.

Finished the book and it was EXCELLENT!

Beautiful romance between a woman scarred both physically and emotionally, and the stranger who she literally gives shelter to in a storm.

I liked both Keith and Jill’s character development in this tender romance set in the gorgeous Orcas island. I also liked the side plot of the mysterious little boy.

Therese Plummer’s narration of the Audible book was as usual, excellent.

Recommended clean romance 😊

I read this book because someone gave it to me and because I was hungry for a book and the library was closed.

Ahem.

Well, it's clean and uplifting, and has a message of healing from tragedy and relying on God. That's good. I like that.

But, the writing quality is weak and untrained, very predictable, the characters are pretty stereotypical (she's a slender landscape artist and he's a gorgeous, muscular pastor), and everyone seemed to have super-tragic lives. Also, I have to admit, sorry Irene, I laughed uproariously -- I couldn't even read it out loud to my husband because I was laughing so hard and crying -- at some supremely cheesy similes. Oh man, it felt good to laugh like that.

"...Her own eyes widened in surprise as their gazes locked -- and held. ... 'Sleep well, Jill. I'll see you tomorrow.'

"His voice was as rough as the outer layer of bark on the madrone trees that thrived on the island. As unsteady as a newborn black-tailed deer. As confused as a sailor set adrift on the open sea without a compass."

WOW. I can totally relate. But, again, it was a book with a nice message. And she did a pretty good job building up the romantic tension.

My thoughts: 📱45% 2:34:08 Ch. 9 - I love it! I'm only stopping for a phone call.
📱76% 4:19:27 Chapter 14 - Still loving this one. I'm certainly going to be working on this catalog this summer.

It wasn't an amazing story but on the setting, heartfelt and happy scale it was perfect. It was the type of story that improves your mood and is easily re-readable. Which is 5 stars in my book.

Recommend to others: Yes! These books are a quick fix to comfort and low on the trauma scale.

This is the first Irene Honnon book I've read and trust me I can't wait to read others by the author.
I have to admit that the beginning of the story was a bit slow and uninteresting, but as the story proceeded it started getting more interesting. The last few chapters are exceptionally good. The book is very inspiring indeed and takes you away from the regular romance novels. This is much deeper and way more meaningful ! The message of forgiveness, of trusting God and of never losing hope are loaded in this book and it is sure to boast your faith just as it boasted mine. I highly recommend this book to you all.

I learned that any physical deformities are not hindrances for someone to love you. i also realized that we encounter problems that we thought would forever destroy us but they are only challenges and bridges for us to find our true happiness. :D

God is there in our biggest trials. He has a plan not in case of or in spite of, but in thru and on the other side. He is in control, we are the ones who get mad, confused, angry and walk away. And it happens to the best and strongest of Christians...

Story is very uplifting. Very heartwarming and tender. In the beginning, you may find yourself growing a little impatient with the pace, but all of the background stories for Jill and Keith, are definitely needed. God will definitely touch your soul with this wonderful story! Amen!

“Some bore their scars in a manner seen by the eye; others in a manner seen only by the heart.”

Irene Hannon penned a touching story with Rainbow’s End. The lives of Keith Michaels and Jill Whelan had not been easy with tragic striking, but the orchestration of God’s hand in their paths crossing might just be the answer to brighter them. Add in an abused, unkempt six year old boy roaming the area in ragged clothes and you’ll keep reading till the end to see how their lives can heal with love, care, God and forgiveness. Hannon definitely had a strong faith message in this release from 2007. A very worthwhile book to read.

This was a book loaned from a friend who had purchased it at the library used book sale. No review was required but I have expressed my own opinion.

The side of this book says 'Complimentary Gift'. There's a REASON it says that. Because it's so cliched and full of religious platitudes that you nearly choke to death on it.

The back of the book was vague enough that I had held out hope that it wasn't syrupy spirituality: it said that a man who loses his wife travels across the country and finds a reclusive woman on an island, and they find love. I liked that idea, but wasn't sure 'Love Inspired' wouldn't kill me, in the process... unfortunately, I'm writing this as an undead person, who came to her demise on the sickening writing within the pages of this total drivel.

First, it's another book in which the heroine's got a (((SPOILER))) horrifically burned face, which is - of course - conveniently confined to only one half of her visage. And note that even with a scar from the tip of her eye (yet the eye wasn't burned, naturally), to the corner of her mouth... and in spite of the fact that the burned area that 'covers most of that side' was bad enough to require multiple grafts, both sides of her face/mouth work perfectly, and she blushes both sides, t'boot. GAH, horrible writing!! If you give someone a disfigurement, you have to work within the constraints you put on them. Convenient injuries (that cause no hardship or physical difficulties) is a sign of a poorly written chrischun ploy.

Then there's this woman, who just happens to relate everything to a story of Christ. A man camping out on her land? Oh, he must be hungry... and of course we MUST be like the Savior, who fed five thousand with five fishes and two loaves. I have NEVER - in the THIRTY YEARS of my church pianist, Bible-study attending, Sunday School teaching life EVER heard anyone do this. It's so contrived and sappy and ridiculous...! Even Grace Livingston Hill (in the uber-spiritual, purer 1940s) didn't write this preposterously.

Then you have an ex-minister who has a scruffy beard, shaggy hair, black leather jacket, rebel-without-a-cause thing for a scant two seconds, and then suddenly isn't intimidating, at all. Too pat of a turn-around... why bother at all? He put on fifteen pounds in the first two weeks he was there, for pity's sake! Poor writing!! And of course he goes back to being minister, because a tidy little opening just happens to show up just at the right time on a tiny island in the middle of nowhere. SO perfect, too convenient. But then, that's a badly written 'inspirational' book. Which is WHY this was free.

As if that wasn't enough, you have a woman who loses her husband and child, and in cookie-cutter perfect symmetry, the story evolves to hand-deliver her (by the grace of Gawd) a husband and child. The sticky evil grandfather is neatly disposed of in an accident (because we can't write without a pat removal like that - it's a cheater's device, eliminating the need to deal with a conflict and wrap up too concisely the story. Life isn't like that. But you see it coming from the first two chapters. WAY predictable and cheesy; also gives the reader NO reason to keep with the book.

Have you ever been to the San Juans? I honeymooned there. Artists in that area are a dime a dozen, and yet Jill's landscapes (as an ex-teacher with a not-damaged-by-fire-eye... whatever) are SOOOOoooooo good, that she's picked up by a Seattle studio. Riiiight.

I just... I expect this is the reason nonnies don't have anything to do with pious religion - there's no concept of realism whatsoever. You'd *have* to give this book away. Although I must admit... the writing itself (barring the story line and author's presence) was done well. It's just too saccharine to stand.

I've read inspirational stories before, so that wasn't the problem. I've read Jebus-y stories too, again not so much a problem there because I could just skip over that. The problem here? SO BORING! This definitely could have been shorten a lot, like to a short story. There was just so much Jebus-y talk and inner (boring) dialog from the characters that IDK. I found that I could skip/skim the book and still know exactly what was going on. I consider that to be a bad thing. I never felt involved with the characters either, so I didn’t care what happened to them, and the overall book was of pure cheesiness in my opinion.

Questions/Comments:

When would the dangerous, bad boy type not be a turn on?

What was with the grocery store lady? I get she's trying to be helpful but at the same time, suggesting he just drive out to Jill's place (single woman) when he's not expected and during a storm to stay in a cottage that she's never rented out before... Yeah, that makes sense to me ;) I understand she's probably the type that looks for the positive in everyone but, at the same time, the guy is a complete stranger.

Jill didn't think another person would be able to get over her scars. There was mention of how when she goes to town, everyone is really friendly to her...because they know she went through something bad. Well, if maybe she went out more and socialized with the townspeople, they'd get to know the real Jill and, hence, get past the scar.

Keith and Jill wanted to help the boy, but they had no evidence of abuse? What about the fact the boy was always dirty and wearing the same clothes? Or how scared or hungry he was? Not in school. This was all evidence they could have used, prior to seeing his burns. Even after the social worker visits the grandfather, nothing seems to change at Kyle's house...not even his clothes!

Why was Jill surprised that Keith knew who to call, 'Social Services', for Kyle?

Why would they have done an autopsy on the grandfather? It's not like they had no clue what killed him? There was no other family wanted the autopsy....that didn't make sense.

This showed up in my mailbox for free from a Christian romance book club. I was doubtful, but once I started reading it I found it to be a nice, simple, feel-good story. The three main characters are all scarred in various ways and have shut themselves off from connecting with other people. Then they come together in Rainsbow's End where they learn to love and trust once again. Besides the details of Keith's story you never doubt what will happen in the book, but it is nice to read a story where people pray throughout, asking God to help them, or saying thanks to Him. That was pleasant, since you basically have to read specifically religious books to get that, it seems, or old books (I just finished Little Men where they mention Him a little.)

"Rainbow's End" is a charming novel of three separate individuals who are overcoming their own troubled pasts all while learning to accept each other into their lives. While the pacing of the story is a lot slower than other novels I've read from Steeple Hill publishing, I still found myself captivated enough by the characters to keep reading. It certainly helped the novel took place in an area I'm familiar with. In terms of romance, it was quite light and leaned more towards the companionship and finding family end of connections than the more intimate side. It also addressed religion a lot more than I have experienced with other books. Overall, this book was a nice, calm piece to read through.

Excellent book - I couldn't put it down. I had to take away a star because it ended too quickly. It was like Irene Hannon had a limited number of pages so when she got past page 200, she had to hurry up and bring everything to a conclusion. I would have preferred to read an additional hundred pages...

A quote from one of the characters, "God doesn't call us to understand. Instead, he calls us to trust and to accept."
