He tells Cynthia a little about her, when she was pregnant with Cynthia’s mom, and about her beautiful garden. He teaches her more chess moves, while listening to her curiosity, and helping in the few ways he's able.After Cynthia asks her mother similar questions, she learns her parents still own her grandparents' farm in ‘Old’ Pine Valley. Cynthia and her mother go on a road trip to where her mother was raised, where she gets to stay in her mother's untouched room. They head out after the last day of school to make it in time for the small town's annual festival. Her Grandfather gives her a small chess piece to protect, as things aren't always as they seem. There may be a deeper reason that drew her to her mother's home state, and the piece that needs to be protected may be needed later to return the favor.
