Carys Morgan is torn between two worlds.
One bright. The other shadow.

“If you trusted me to hold you while you  slept , it would be the greatest honor of my life.”

First thing's first, Carys finally chooses between Duncan and Lachlan, and she chooses CORRECTLY. Never doubted you, Carys, I knew you'd make the right choice. My life = made.

But waiting for her to get to that point was agonising (in a good way), the tension between the two of them has been building since book one, and it only increased it book two. The steam factor did too, in case anyone was wondering.

So, The Shadow Path picks up almost where First Light left off, except it's been several months since we last saw our beloved characters. Now they have to return to the Shadowlands for something seemingly routine, which turns out to be anything but.

Just as I was obsessed with the first book, I'm enthralled by this one. There's something so addictive about Elizabeth Hunter's writing that keeps you wanting to read more and more until you've finished the whole book.

And then you're left screaming because of the cliffhanger, naturally. And to think I was convinced we'd get a somewhat peaceful ending...

I'm really exited about book three, some pieces were taken off the board, but some were added as well. I'm anticipating the final battle will be the greatest one yet.

I loved how Carys handled the one we got here, that was so smart of her (and the extra help, lest we forget). I know she doesn't want to be a queen, but, like a certain someone said, maybe that's why she should be.

She and the others grow as characters in each chapter, and the world grows with them. I will never get tired of all the details, or the mythology. If you thought the Shadowlands couldn't get any more intriguing, think again.

We also have a little side romance between Carys's best friend and a wonderful dragon we all know and love, as well as Dru and someone I won't spoil. But I also caught some ~vibes~ from a character we're just getting to know, so I'm not totally sure how that will go, but I'm along for the ride.

So many questions were answered, and I feel like I have a clearer picture of how Carys came to be now, but there's still so much left to uncover.

I started crying when she was talking to Leuca (one of the best characters, by the way) about her mother and horses, because I associate my own mother with horses too. I love how much they're featured throughout this book, the author couldn't have picked a better animal and Goddess to represent.

Speaking of Goddesses, one of my absolute faves to read about made an appearance, or perhaps she was always there...DUN DUN DUN. I have to admit that I didn't guess it, despite the signs, until Carys put two and two together, I kinda love the chaos she's causing though.

The Shadow Path was a proper sequel, not a filler book, but even if it was the latter, I know I would've enjoyed it anyway. It sets things up nicely for book three, while still wrapping up a few important bits. All in all, it was perfect, and, considering Elizabeth Hunter's track record, Broken Veil will be too.

I have been a huge EH fan for years now and I can be quite biased. I had issues with the first book but I still gave it fours stars. However I despise love triangles and although Carys finally chooses it still annoyed me.

This series doesn't have its usual flow as with other EH books and I don't know the aim is here. Is it romantasy or urban fantasy? Dimension travel?

This series is rich in world building and with its mythology it truly is a great read. My problem? I don't like any of the characters in the book. I feel ambivalent about Carys. I don't like Lachlan, Duncan is somewhat better but he is neither Gio or Ben. I like gruff Heroes but not him. I didn't get dragon satisfactory at all. I slogged through this and it is all me.

We may need to part ways on this series. Sorry 😞

You're going to have to stay here and wait your turn. If I don't read the other books before you you shall not be given the attention that you deserve. Hush. Behave. Thank you!

The second Shadowlands installment is exactly what a middle book should be. Some of the characters from the first book are more fully explored, new locations and entities are introduced, and the story evolves. Are some things more clear? Yes! Are others more complex? Again, yes. Perfect!

We learn more (sort of) about the Crow Mother. Carys fulfilled her promise to take her to the Brightlands. That may not have worked out the way we thought it would. We figured Dru was more than just a guy running a bar but ... wow. We can't forget Lachlan and Duncan. Two sides of the same coin. Carys is still a dragon rider. Cadell, the dragon, is fierce and protective. Just how a dragon should be.

The last installment of the Shadowlands trilogy will come out at the end of 2025. As with all of Ms. Hunter's series, we will be pulled back from our cliff hanging and it will all make sense. I love this series (fae, dragons, hot Scotsmen) and even though I got an ARC, I cheerfully ordered, and paid for, a copy.

What an exciting installment in The Shadowlands series! The entire time I was reading this book I was either smiling or sitting on the edge of my seat. Many questions are answered but clues and riddles are a constant when the Fae are involved and they have not disappointed, leaving new questions yet to be answered. I cannot wait to see the full truth behind Carys’ lineage, whatever it may be.

I imagine a mythology professor’s ultimate dream (as is mine) would be to find themselves inside the boundaries of a magical world where the stories you’ve studied your entire life are all true in one way or another. Carys is intelligent and brave, she knows the value of heart, friendship and loyalty. Both Duncan and Lachlan bring the slow burn to the pages, her choice both delighted me and also had my heart sad for who she did not choose. But I trust Elizabeth has a lovely plan evolving for the unsuccessful wooer as well (no spoilers here!!) I loved where the story ended, I’m so excited to get more of the Shadowlands soon! There is still so much to know!

This second volume was very uneven. Right off the bat, the characters are thrown into a great big coronation event, which takes roughly 40% of the book, and it's all Carys and Cadell talking to various cardboard political players, with the supporting cast mostly hanging around just off-screen. Including Duncan, who's mostly just the love interest for vast stretches of the novel. I didn't have much reason to complain about the political intrigue in the first book because it was paired with a murder mystery, and more care was put into fleshing out what's essentially an extended family of nobility.

In almost nearly half of the book, the core crew of Carys, Duncan, Cadell and Laura are insignificant and have little to do, and it's all posturing and handwringing and having meetings around an utterly uninteresting large conflict with only Carys and Cadell as major participants. There's a brief trip to Brightlands London, and that part was genuinely nice (mainly because the two Brightkin finally stopped being window dressing), but then the aforementioned conflict blows up in the Shadowlands and they're up to their necks in mindnumbing strategy talks again. Why mindnumbing? Because the reader doesn't have time or reason to get invested in the fae vs. everyone war. It all revolves around the handful of dishwater-flavoured nobles (including Lachlan, I thought he was supposed to be interesting?) planning things, filling each other in on whatever, making speeches, being very formally worried about . How that particular plot point gets resolved is another nice sequence, although I'm not so happy about Carys going from a non-action gal to arrow-slinging badass-in-training. She's still no Mary Sue, but... er, a few other things make her come damn close. But anyhow, the war storyline feels... too inconsequential. Specifically because of our point-of-view being that of the ruling class and the interconnected nobility. Medieval wars don't really touch people like that, and so that was a weird choice for a romantasy book. It all felt a little like a mafia drama. It didn't help that the bad guys were only ever seen from afar or their moves related to the cast through third parties or just speculated upon. I actually rather liked the revelation at the end, as I did all the side characters like Laura, Dru and Naida (and the Crow Mother! haha, I loved her) that got greater development, but Hunter could've done more with them. She was just sadly stuck on this huge, theatrical conflict that could've served the story better in a more subdued, compact form.

Eh... I didn't even mention all the grammar mistakes and the bits and pieces that slipped past the editors. A smile doesn't 'flirt' around your lips, or you don't 'secret' someone away. Either there were none, or somebody was drunk off their ass on the job. My criticism from the last book is still relevant: a good developmental editor and copy editor would've done wonders here.

I really enjoyed The Shadow Path. As the second book in the trilogy, it has a slightly slower pace that lets the world deepen and expand without losing momentum or emotional stakes. The portal-fantasy vibe is strong here, with dragons, fae courts, and Celtic-inspired magic that feels immersive but easy to follow. The worldbuilding is rich and layered, with plenty of political intrigue and mythology woven through every scene.

The romance is compelling, with great tension and one solid open-door scene that brings some heat without overpowering the story. I wouldn’t have minded if the spice level was higher—especially given the seductive, dirty-mouthed energy that’s teased so well! Character moments shine throughout, and I loved finally getting to see more of the secondary cast who intrigued me in the first book.

This is definitely a middle book that takes its time laying important groundwork for the finale, but it never feels like filler. It’s the kind of romantasy that rewards you for sinking in and paying attention, while building anticipation for what’s coming next. I’m genuinely excited for the final book in the trilogy.

If you’re looking for your next romantasy series—especially if you love dragons, fae politics, rich mythology, or anything with a strong portal fantasy feel—this is a great pick. Fans of Outlander and Irish-inspired magical worlds will find a lot to enjoy here.

Epic Fantasy. All the classic with class

This second in a classic Celtic themed fantasy that brings a mythology professor and her best friend to a dimension where the Celtic stories — from unicorns to Fomorians, along with the light and dark fae come to life. It’s written by a master of detail in portraying characters and a storyline to fall in love with. There is a fluidity to this story that brings in even the indigenous traditions of the Pacific Northwest. Best read to start with “First Light” book 1 in this series but it is rich in pageantry, character descriptions and even London taxi drivers who know the gate to the other dimension. I loved it and I hope you will too.

A romantic fantasy adventure with great characters, action and intrigue in an all-encompassing magical world, Elizabeth Hunter has once again transported me with her writing and her imagination, and I loved this read.

This is the second book in the Shadowlands series, and is a direct follow on from First Light, continuing the storyline with not a lot of background given. This book is definitely not a standalone, and if it’s been a while since you’ve read the first book, a reread may be in order. And beware spoilers below for the first book.

It’s been six months since Carys returned from the portal realm of the Shadowlands to her life in the US. She’s adjusting to her new normal with her bonded dragon shifter by her side, when she receives news of the death of one of the Shadowlands kings, and for diplomatic reasons she needs to return. With her trusty band of friends and allies, Carys is once again transported to the magical Shadowlands where she is a considered part of a noble family, and where she holds mysterious powers. But she’s thrown into simmering tensions between the different factions of the Shadowlands, with ancient magical powers awakening and the fae continuing their dangerous plotting.

We’re thrown right back into the thick of things, reuniting with characters from the first book, and meeting a fabulous bunch of new ones. It’s a complex and twisty story, and I admit I found myself a bit lost even though I had only recently finished the first book. But I enjoyed getting sucked into this world, and as I kept reading, things became clearer. There are new developments and twists to the story, and though it was a slow start, the second half of the book had me madly flipping pages. Though she is torn between her two worlds, Carys plants herself right in the middle of the action and those final few chapters were a whirlwind of excitement!

And in the middle of it all is a gorgeous romance.

“It would be so easy to fall into this … to fall into you. I’m not even going to pretend it wouldn’t be.”
“You think I wouldn’t catch you?”
“I know you would.”

Though it’s in the background of everything else that is going on, Carys’ return to the Shadowlands sees her thrust back into the middle of a love triangle with her ex-lover Lachlan and burly Scotsman, Duncan. There’s no real surprise where that particular storyline is going, and though there were moments that hurt as Carys makes her choice, I was excited for the progression of the love story, feeling the chemistry and the sense of anticipation as it all unfolded.

“If you trusted me to hold you while you slept, it would be the greatest honor of my life.”

“The man I want to be is the one at your side, Carys Morgan. The one you call when you’re hurt or lonely or just need to vent. The man who helps you fight your battles and fucking…washes your socks if that’s what you need. I just want to be with you. I just want to be yours.”

Oh swoon!

I’m so intrigued by the direction of the story and after yet another big twist and the cliffhanger ending, I can’t wait for the release of the next book this coming winter so see what happens next.

A sometimes complicated, but well developed and all-consuming story, I loved this one.

4 stars.

This book was everything I wanted it to be and more! After falling completely in love with Elizabeth’s writing and the story of First Light, I have been dying to read book 2. I am so pleased to say that it exceeded my expectations and carried on the magic from the first book.

All of our favorite characters are back and experience some major growth in this book. I cannot wait to learn more about Carys’ lineage. I have ideas so I’m excited to see it all play out. I loved seeing more of Duncan and his personality in this book. I’m a big big fan! I don’t want to give any spoilers but I cannot wait to see what Elizabeth has in store for all of our characters in the next book! This is easily a favorite series of mine and I will be counting down the days until we get more from the Shadowlands.

Thank you so much to Elizabeth and Valentine PR for this ARC in return for my honest review. My opinions are my own.

The Shadow Path by Elizabeth Hunter is an absolute gem! This captivating tale weaves together the enchanting realms of mythology and magic, pulling readers into the life of Carys Morgan, who finds herself torn between two worlds. Hunter's ability to create such rich, immersive settings is truly remarkable.

The characters are well-developed, especially Carys, as she navigates her dual existence and the complex relationships that come with it. The tension between the two men vying for her heart adds an intriguing layer to the story, making it impossible to predict her ultimate choice.

With its perfect blend of adventure, romance, and fantasy, The Shadow Path is a page-turner that keeps you on the edge of your seat. I couldn't put it down and can't recommend it enough! Five stars for this mesmerizing journey through the Shadowlands!

This is the 2nd book in the series by this author. We follow Carys on her journey in the Shadowlands as she navigates who she is and what her heart wants: Duncan, the Scottish Brightkin? Or Lachlan, the prince of Alba in the Shadowlands. The romance lover in me would’ve loved a little more tension or so but I’m all for the choice she eventually makes 👀

But her emotions will have to wait because Carys has a debt to fulfill and that debt is being called in…

Will it be an easy exchange? Or will there be consequences bigger than she could imagine?

I really enjoyed The Shadow Path. There are lots of things happening and I did get a little lost in details at times. There’s a lot of worldbuilding which makes the story more vivid but also makes it a little more complex to read. But that doesn’t make the story less entertaining.

While there’s definitely 1 main plot, there are several side plots. At least, I think so. The author might be misleading us but I do believe these side thingies will have a meaning later on in the series.

Some mysteries from book 1, First Light, have been revealed but definitely not all of them! So I hope we’ll get to uncover more in book 3. I can’t wait to discover more about Carys because I have a feeling there’s more to her than we’ve learned so far.

Add to your tbr if you like:
- modern world vs fantasy world
- hidden identity
- battle
- Fae, Wolf shifters, Dragons and Humans
- court politics
- gods
- Multiple love interests

I’m a little unsatisfied and a little bit confused. I jumped into book two immediately after book one. While I was engaged and anticipatory with book one, I was a little lost in book two trying to figure out where this story, plot, characters and world building were going. Maybe when the third book comes out it will fill in the gaps. I just hope I don’t lose interest by then. Cautiously recommended.

The story and world building in this book was incredible!

I really have no idea what to write except this series is getting better and better. The romance element is great! There’s still a bit of a love triangle, but it ends and I am so happy with the choice haha.

All the characters are amazing. The interconnections just blew my mind. I was left reeling!!

It is slow in parts because of the information you get, but when it starts going, it goes! So much epicness! I seriously loved this book!

•My Thoughts•
I’m a sucker for Celtic mythology and this series delivers! I love the magic woven in from Celtic lore and other places around the world and it worked so well. There was a lot going on in this book with our FMC, Carys, figuring out the mystery of her birth and her ability to talk and bond with a dragon. She’s of two worlds and torn between the two! She’s also deciding between two love interests and this is where I had trouble. I felt like she struggled to make a choice for too long and it frustrated me. The mirrored worlds are fascinating and I think the concept was very, very cool. The last 30% of the book was action packed and had me on the edge of my seat. The romance, minus the drama, definitely took second place in this story and the impending war, the mysterious evil and intrigue took center stage. There were a lot of moving parts and characters and after the cliffhanger ending, I am curious to continue the series

Thank you to Elizabeth Hunter and Valentine PR for the early copy. All thoughts and opinions are my own!

Wow! What an exciting second installment in The Shadowlands series! The Shadow Path is an action packed book that moves you through some of the most vivid and vibrant world building! This book was everything I expected in a middle book of a trilogy. The story unfolds and evolves beautifully; characters were further developed and brought into the spotlight; while some new characters were introduced to us furthering the complexity of the story. We explored vast new areas of this brilliantly evolved world; and, while a lot of questions from First Light were answered, we are once again left with so much left to explore and learn about.

The growth of the characters is absolutely magnificent! Especially Carys! Her growth and self discovery are everything I wanted for her. I am just a tad overly excited that some aspects of the romance questions have been answered and I am quite giddy with the direction the story is going because our grumpy Scot Duncan is everything! Our favorite dragon shifter, Cadell, does not disappoint is this book; with his humor and banter and all around broodiness.

The Shadow Path is full of heart pounding adventure and kept me on the edge my seat for a good part of it. I was thoroughly engaged and loved every minute of this book. We have Fae, humans, dragons, wolf shifters, sprites, trolls and so many other supernatural magical beings. There is political intrigue, warring fae princes, epic fight scenes, Celtic mythology, and a sizzling slow burn.

Thank you, Valentine PR for the opportunity to read an advance copy of The Shadow Path! I cannot wait for the final installment!

Once again Elizabeth Hunter knocked it out of the freaking park with this book! I was lucky enough to get an ARC of the book so big thanks to her and Valentine PR!

The Shadowlands series is a must read for anyone that enjoys Celtic/Welsh/British mythology, folklore, & history, portal fantasies, magic, romance, adult characters that actually present as functioning adults that contribute to society because they have actual jobs and don’t make completely rash decisions that bite them and everyone else in the ass (most of the time)…basically if you want to read a really well written book that melds together reality, history, and a magical world full of knights and dragons and magical creatures plus hot Scottish doppelgängers, this series is for you…and really, who DOESN’T want to read about double the amount of hot Scottish dudes? Did I mention one’s a prince in a magical fairytale version of medieval Scotland and the other is a rich ass Laird that doubles as a blacksmith (so, you know…he’s jacked) in modern-day Scotland?

The Shadow Path picks up a few months after the end of First Light with Carys back in California with her dragon trying to get back to her normal life as a mythology professor. This goes tits up when our grumpy but oh so hot Laird Duncan shows up to let her know that shenanigans are afoot in the Anglian Shadowlands…the death of a king kind of shenanigans…look, sometimes the second book in a series can end up being mostly filler but that is NOT the case at all with The Shadow Path. I honestly enjoyed this book more than First Light. Probably because the world building had already been done so we really had a chance to get to know the characters more and find out answers to some mysteries that were introduced in book one…like just exactly who the crap is the crow mother and who is Dru? If you’re familiar with Celtic/Irish mythology you might have already had a guess as to who those two might be but I guarantee you definitely weren’t going to guess where their storylines were going. I’m super excited to see how everything plays out in book three this winter though!

Another big question/issue that is resolved in this book is who Carys chooses to finally be with…Fairytale Prince or Grumpy Laird? I’m not a fan of long, drawn out love triangles so I’m glad this was resolved, at least for the time being. I have no idea if the choice she made in this book is endgame or not, but I’m glad that at least for the time being it’s not a “who will she choose” back and forth thing. I’m actually more interested on two other couples now…or one potential couple and one hopefully not totally doomed/starcrossed couple.

The end of this book set up quite the conundrum for book 3 and I can’t wait to see how Carys and crew handle that situation. If you’ve ever thought to yourself, “Man, you know what would be cool? If there was a book series that was basically a mash up of Outlander, A Discovery of Witches, any Juliet Marillier book ever written and a less bloody version of Game of Thrones…that would be the perfect book series!” Well guys, have I got some great news for you!

The Shadow Path is book two in the Shadowlands series by Elizabeth Hunter and again she has weaved her web of magical mystery in this romantic portal fantasy. We are back with Professor Carys Morgan’s she continues her adventures in the two worlds she now inhabits. All the dragons and other magical creatures from First Light return, along with the kings and queens of the four kingdoms. This time the story is set in Anglia and we are introduced to new characters, gods and goddesses and more myths and legends. It is an action packed and captivating story full of magic, mystery and mythology amongst the romance.

The prologue is about Queen Orla and Prince Cian, who rule over the fae of Eire and Briton. All the different Fae rule over the humans in Shadowlands and control all the gates between the two worlds. We are about to find out their revenge plans for the murder of their daughter and the effect they will have on the Queens Pact that currently keeps the peace between the kingdoms.

Carys has been home for six months since finding out about the other world, the truth about her boyfriend Lachlan and meeting his Brightkin Duncan. She still can’t decide between the two Scotsmen because Lachlan is sweet and charming but his destiny is as leader of Alba. Duncan is broody and grumpy but also caring and kind, and lives in her world. If all that wasn’t confusing enough, it turned out her best friend Laura is a Brightkin and an ambassador between the worlds. Carys was accompanied by her dragon Cadell, and he has been training her as she is now Nerys Ddraig, a Cymric dragon lord.

Everything changes again when Duncan arrives with news that King Edgar had died. Her Uncle, the King of Cymru, wants her to attend the coronation of the new King of Anglia as sees her as his heir. Laura travels with them and she feels the magic is unsettled. When rumours about unusual magical activity leads to worries of a conflict brewing, they gather a secret group together to investigate. We meet Godrik, the leader of the North Wolves and the main magical defence of Anglia and Lady Wynnflad ‘Winnie” the king’s cousin and captain of his guards. We learn more about the mysterious Dru and why he runs the pub in the Brightlands.

Carys is still trying to work out who she is, the source of her magic and who her mum really was? She wants to find her own path but doesn’t know in which world it will be or who with? When things escalate can the group save Anglia? What will happen when the Crow Mother comes to collect her debt with Carys? When they need help, who do they trust? There is a battle at the end which is amazing and fascinating with all the magical beings.

Cadell was wonderfully protective of both the women and I loved and laughed at his relationship with Laura. I was fascinated by Dru’s involvement and all the complex interactions between everyone in the Shadowlands. I was pleased over who Carys choose but did feel sad for the other one. I can’t wait to find out who exactly Carys is, get the answers to all the questions I have and find out what happens next.

Absolutely OBSESSSEDDDD with this series more and more with each book! The Shadow Path picks up with Carys back in Cali with her friends, but is forced back in the Shadowlands, and let me tell you, things are not as simple as they seem (I mean, are they ever?). The mission that’s supposed to fulfill a long-standing debt quickly spirals into something SO MUCH BIGGER—and way more dangerous—than anyone expected (dun dun dunnnnn!!!) The world feels even richer and darker this time around, and the stakes? Whew. They’re skyyyyhigh. There’s war brewing at every turn of the page, gods stirring, and secrets bubbling just beneath the surface. I was fully locked in from the first page. (I mean who am I to deny, I’ve been (im)patiently waiting for this book to drop, since picking up First Light.

And yes… let’s talk romance. Carys is still caught between Duncan (broody, protective, Scottish deliciousness) and Lachlan (the charming fae prince who first drew her in back in Cali). I won’t spoil who she picks… because… why choose right? The slow burn all the way around was so well done, I ATE IT UP! That build-up has been simmering since First Light, and it absolutely DELIVERS in this one!!! Worth. Every. SINGLE. Page. I wouldn’t have minded even more romantic tension, but everything that plays out, was perfectly done. (Trying sooo hard not to drop a pin prick of spoilers in this one!)

As much as I was living for the romance, the story itself is doing so much (I’m a HUGE romance lover, drawn into the fantasy aspect… but this fantasy world just keeps me soooo ingrossed.) The plot thickens with side quests, mysteries from book one getting some well deserved answers (while raising a ton of new ones… come on, what fun would book 3 be without these), and more political scheming than ever. There are dragons, wolves, fae sea monsters, creepy troll markets, and ancient powers awakening. It’s wild, it’s layered, and it’s exactly the kind of middle-book magic you could absolutely hope for. Carys is stepping into her power, the world is shifting, and I’m dying to see how it all ends in book three… I’m not patient… (forever hoping the release date for book 3 remains later this year (2025))

Review copy was received from Author. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

The Shadowlands series will be more than a duology it seems. There are many aspects which are popular these dayse days - time / portal travel, Scotland, fae, dragons, etc.  I'm going to try not to redo First Light here and not do spoilers.  This is a series best read in order.

Carys lives in California, a professor of mythology.  Her boyfriend, Lachlan, disappears, leaving his car and many things.  So she goes to Scotland to find him, discovers he has a "twin" and much more.    She ends up meeting people from Lachlan's world.  And it's so cool, she is chosen by a dragon.

We start here with Carys just ending her class sessions for summer break.  She is actively invited to go to a King's Coronation in the Shadowlands by her father's Shadowkin, Dafydd.  The coronation goes well enough but then the fae start stealing children. Carys and her dragon Cadell, along with Duncan and Laura work with a few others to get the children back.  They even get help from Dru and his lady healer, Naida.

Carys seems to have decided she is choosing Duncan (the Brightkin twin), rather than Lachlan (the Shadowkin twin) and starts her relationship with him.  They have not really figured out how it will work but they are both living in the Brightlands.  She also learns just a bit more about her mother and the fae.

After the children are retrieved, Carys and her friends realize something else is happening with the fae, probably by Prince Cian. Animals and crops are dying and the only one who can counteract it is his brother, Dru.  So they have to convince Dru to work with them.

There is a big battle which is in an odd place and odd strategy.   Eventually, they figure it out and are able to have a better strategy for the fight.  But it's not just the fae, some gods are running wild too.

The ending leaves some things yet to be handled, so there is a wait until Winter 2025 for Broken Veil. I want to see Naida happy, and how the new threat is handled.  There's much more to be learned about dragons.  Carys and Duncan will have to work out their relationship.  Who knows if any or all of these threads will be part of it?

Continuing the story that began in First Light Carys Morgan has returned to the world of her Shadowkin only instead of Alba she’s in Anglia for the coronation of a new king accompanied by her dragon and her friend Laura but something feels different about the magic this time around and it isn’t long before the land finds itself of the brink of an all out war

With the introduction of new characters while developing existing ones, this author continues to weave her intricate story bringing together all the seemingly random threads and joining them into a cohesive tale. From warring fae princes and fragile peace agreements, to waking gods and kidnapped younglings this book was a pure delight from start to finish. I loved learning more about the dark horse Dru who, with his secrets turns out to be even more intriguing than he first appeared and Laura’s interactions with dragon Cadell brought a hint of levity. The world building continued to be first class especially the troll market which was so vividly described, it was easy to picture it in my minds eye as I read. And if dragons weren’t enough there is now the addition of sea monsters. Meanwhile Carys is torn between her two worlds. In the Brightlands, she has her career and coffee but, in the Shadowlands, she has found a family again. Then there’s Lachlan, the reason she ventured into this strange new world in the first place but there’s also Duncan, his Brightkin, identical in looks but so different from his twin and who moves between both worlds with ease. With more revelations about Carys’ origins, some questions are answered but mostly the answers only lead to more questions all while, lurking in the background, is someone with their own agenda, playing everyone as though they were merely pieces on a chessboard for them to move at will. I honestly have no idea where Elizabeth Hunter is going with this series but I’m loving every moment of the journey. A well deserved five stars from this reader.

4.5 Stars ⭐️

In this second book, we continue on with FMC Carys Morgan as she is trying to deal with the new turn that her life has taken. At the end of the last book, she decided to go back home to California to try to figure out what path she wants to take for her life. Cadell - her dragon - followed her (in human form of course) but everything changes when they get summoned back to the Shadowlands for a coronation. One of the Kings of Briton has unexpectedly died and they will be crowning his son Harold as the new king. This time, instead of going back to the place where Carys learned about this other world - Alba - they are going to be going to Shadowland London and the home of the Shadowland twin of her father - King Dafyyd.

There is WAY too much to describe in terms of the events that happen after that. Suffice it to say that there is danger afoot (I just wanted to say that). Actually, there is something going on with the magic and before you know it, Carys and her friends find themselves in the middle of a brewing war.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE watching Carys and Cadell's relationship grow (that is her dragon). Not to mention that there is somewhat of a love triangle because of the fact that Lachlan and Duncan are both in love with Carys. Then there is the fact that she seems to have magic - and no one can explain how that came to be.

Again, there is a ton of action, many mysteries, and drama. Lots of drama. Not to mention Carys learning to fight and shoot with her bow and arrows from the sky with Cadell. Not bad for a Professor of Mythology from California......

This book features the old gods and some power hungry fae - with things (and magic) waking up that have been asleep for hundreds of years.

This book also ends in a kind of cliffhanger- but again, it is not too bad of one. It just basically sets up the next book - which I will be waiting patiently for.

Actual rating 4.5/5

Cannot be read as a standalone, book 2 of an incomplete series. But VERY worth the investment to read the first two books and live in the anticipation for book 3!

**************

Book 2 of the Shadowlands series surpassed my expectations! I absolutely loved book 1 and wasn't sure how Elizabeth Hunter was going to top it - but she absolutely did.

We continue the story of mythology professor Carys, Scottish laird Duncan (major swoon), Shadowlands Prince Lachlan (lesser swoon), mind-speaking dragon Cadell, BFF Laura, fae Dru, and the host of characters as the tensions in the Shadowlands mount. Called back from the Brightlands by her Uncle Daffyd to witnesss the coronation of the new King, Carys and her friends immediately feel a difference in the magic. Turns out that sinister forces are at play, beyond what anyone could have imagined and threatening the tenuous peace between the Shadowland kingdoms. Will Carys save the Shadowlands from upheaval and destruction caused by its own people, or will she have to watch it descend into war once again.

The author gives us more incredible otherworldly creatures, major slow-burn romance, who-will-Carys-choose (Duncan or Lachlan), epic longing, banter for DAYS, fierce battle scenes, and so much more. Her world-building is epic (one of my very favourite parts of her books) and her characters are relatable and so very likeable. Even the villains have backstories that give you pause on judging them too harshly.

I was especially giddy to watch as Dru was developed into a main character through this book, something I longed for after book 1.

Absolute banger. Loved it so much and I can hardly wait for book 3, Broken Veil, to be released this winter (2025).

A massive thank you to Valentine PR and the author for gifting me an advance copy of this incredible book.

Ahh, Book Two of the Shadowlands series was everything I hoped for and more! I savored every word, drawing out the magic until the official release day just to prolong the anticipation for Book Three. If you're a fan of fantasy with romance at its heart, this series is an absolute must read!

Elizabeth Hunter continues to prove herself a masterful storyteller, weaving vivid imagery and layered emotions into a world that feels as real as our own. The Shadow Path pulls us deeper into the mysteries of the Shadowlands, revealing tantalizing truths about Carys Morgan. Who she is, who she might become, and just how pivotal she could be to everything.

I especially loved the insight into the political dynamics of the Shadowlands and how different magical factions choose their allegiances, and the tension that brews beneath the surface. It adds so much depth and intrigue to an already rich world.

Carys continues to be a strong, compelling heroine. Fierce yet vulnerable, brave yet deeply human. I’m completely hooked on her journey, especially as she navigates where she truly belongs. Could it be Baywood, Scotland, or the enchanting Shadowlands? its a question we as readers are fully interested in finding out. I’m really hoping the answer is Scotland with Duncan. It feels like the perfect place for Carys. Close enough to the Shadowlands to stay connected to her magic and purpose, but just far enough to hold on to the beauty of a quiet, mundane life. It just seems like the perfect balance.

And oh my goodness Cadell! I adored seeing a softer, more playful side of him in this book, especially his budding affection for Laura. It brought such a sweet surprise to the story. Book Three cannot come soon enough. My heart is fully invested, and I can't wait to see how Carys and Duncan’s relationship evolves, and what fate awaits them all.

After reading “First Light” I was really eager to get back into this world and dig into it more. I was relieved to get LOTS of answers to questions I had been pondering from the first book and happy to report that decisions are finally MADE in Carys’ love life (which personally I found quite satisfying). There are some spicier scenes when the situation calls for it, but otherwise this story is mostly focused on uncovering details and advancing the plot. I LOVE how many layers are integrated into all aspects of Carys’ journey! It kept me guessing and hypothesizing as I was reading, while also underscoring the intensity of the main character’s relationships. Also, some secondary characters have become main characters now (was fully swooning over Dru’s star-crossed lovers storyline and also cheerleading Laura’s cautious-but-definitely-interested romantic endeavour) and I cannot say enough how much I adore their larger roles. I’m hoping for more stories from their perspectives (even a fully launched series for those four characters as they navigate their own journeys).

I was given my copy of The Shadow Path early and dove into this next book knowing that it would be a middle section of the overall plot (since this is planned as a trilogy). I was excited but also nervous about where it would take me - and then potentially leave me in this plot-line. I’m happy to report that while it ends with CLEAR storylines still unfolding - I feel like I know enough to be comfortable with waiting (somewhat patiently) for the next book... As long as we don’t have to wait for TOO long, because I’m betting there’s going to be one hell of a finale - and I’m SO here for it! I’d highly recommend this series!

I want to start this by saying I was lucky to receive the Arc for this book. I haven’t read from this author before, nor had I read book 1 in this series.

I received the arc so figured I best start from the beginning. That was the beginning of me loosing 48 hours of my life into this magical world because I could not put these books down! Book 1 just sucked me in and I NEEDED to know to what happened next, I needed to know how the relationship between the FMC Carys and the two MMC’s, who also happen to be twins!!! One noble Scotsman (Duncan) and one dark Prince! (Lachlan).

If you don’t believe me just read my review of book 1!!🤣

I don’t want to give spoilers away but this book we get completely tangled up into magic wars, conspiracies, who is on who’s side and let’s not forget the great ‘who do I love’ triangle between two very hot men.

I felt the emotions of this book, the confusion of being torn between two worlds, two loves, two paths of life. Carys is still getting to grips with the magical world, let alone feeling like she’s supposed to belong in ‘her’ world but her world is feeling more and more magical with each foe and challenge thrown towards her and her friends.

I loved the banter between Carys and Duncan, I loved her best friend was in this more too, especially given her pull towards Carys tall and broody dragon, as much as she tries to deny it.

I am now reluctantly going to have to find out what happens in book 3!! Dates marked and eagerly waiting!

5⭐️2🌶️

I am eternally thankful for the opportunity to read this book as an arc but all thoughts and opinions are my own!

The second installment of the Shadowlands brings back the loved key figures and introduces a load of new ones while increasing the depth and complexity of prior... entities. The Shadow Path is a strong second book in this new world from Elizabeth Hunter that sets us all up for a thrilling third, but it is very much a subsequent storyline that will only make sense to readers of the initial installation.

As one may expect, as soon as Carys seems to be settling back into her career and getting footing in her new training, she is pulled back to the Shadowlands where she gains a deeper understanding of nerys ddraig responsibilites, fulfills an obligations or two, and grows alongside our main cohort of characters.

The Shadow Path delves into the politics of Shadowlands, the origins of Carys, and highlights a few struggles that come about for our characters who navigate two entangled worlds. There is a third work already planned, so there is an intensely cliffhanger-ish ending that sets us up for the next book.

The WEALTH of Welsh and Celtic mythology references is DELICIOUS. The Hardcover special edition with sprayed edges is gorgeous and congruent with the First Light edition. The romance warms and seduces - there is a bit of open door, responsible adulting (consistent with Elizabeth Hunter's later works, though less spicy than our firey friends in the other world).
