Legends are occasionally based on fact. Sometimes, the facts have teeth and claws.

Jaelle Rhovaryn and her bonded pegasus were just meant to do their compulsory duty in the aerial corps before settling into normal life as the unimportant royal. The idyllic archipelago in the far south has almost everything she’s ever wanted.

Instead, they find themselves among a handful of witnesses as mythic monsters descend on doomed civilians and soldiers alike. Leadership looks the other way, but the attacks continue.

The millennia-old elemental wards have been breached.

How did the twisted creatures bypass the barrier? Were they the reason the country’s ancient king erected it in the first place–and what did it really cost?

Jaelle must decide what she will sacrifice–but the choice may not be hers for long. The beasts are coming, and they’ll slaughter anyone in their way.

I received Rupture as an ARC

As I said in my review if Tether, this was my first series featuring Pegasi (I would have said pegasuses but both are correct) and I really enjoyed the "partner" dynamic. As these are prequels, there is still so much to learn about the theory of how the tether works.

In Rupture, Jaelle is a good leader but has yet to discover her own real strength and power. Trauma, loss, and love are showing her but does she have the capacity to see it for herself?

Everything is about change for her, for her friends, and for her world. I am so excited to go on this journey with them and I look forward to seeing how this series unfolds.

Thank you for choosing me for this ARC.

Rupture, A Rising of the Stars Prequel is one of those rare joys to read.

It’s fantasy but in a contemporary setting - so, magic but also cell phones. It’s got subtle queer rep that simply exists in its setting - it’s not trauma porn or ticking the boxes. It’s female lead - and she’s not a butch tough-as-nails character, she leads but she doubts too. And there are pegasi - pegasuses for those of you, like me, who did a double take the first time I read it. Not dragons — although they are invoked, like gods — but flying horses!

Mythical beasts are rumoured to be invading the kingdom, which shouldn’t be able to happen. The barrier that surrounds the realm has held for as long as anyone can recall. There’s no way there’d be a breach in it. Surely nothing can come through and attack and sink whole ships, slaughtering the entire crew?

As Jaelle and her aerial corp investigate, they don’t only encounter the horrors of this unknown attack, but also political manoeuverings that seek to sanitise events.

Then she meets the one person who is able to show her the truth, as well as the bloody cost that was paid for everyone’s safety - and will need to be paid again.

I can genuinely say I didn’t see the twist coming — although, in fairness, it’s not a big leap of logic. (I think I was just caught up in enjoying the story. That’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it!)

This has been such a delight to read, and I can’t recommend it enough.

I was fortunate enough to receive a digital ARC of this book, though I'm That Person and am only remembering to review it months later.

I devoured this. Rupture has all the elements that I loved in fantasy books like Mercedes Lackey's Heralds or Valdemar books: a kick-butt but also sympathetic female main character; magic horses, but even cooler because they fly; and found family. I enjoyed this setting more, in some ways, than Valdemar or Green Rider books, because they feel more contemporary, in no small part because the setting is queer- and poly-normative.

It felt like the author has spent a significant amount of time not only on world-building, but also on character- and relationship-building. This is a short book, but it feels like there is so much more to discover about the universe and characters than it can contain, in a good way. Though this book is mostly self-contained, it does end with loose ends that leave me wanting to know what happens next.

I was lucky to be given the chance to review Rupture of my own accord, through being offered an eARC.

For a shorter story, there is still a lot going on and I feel there is still a lot more to uncover.
Rupture is the next step in learning about Jaelle, her pegasus, Lily, and their world.
There are interesting characters and insights into discovering a new world and creatures.
It will be fascinating to see where this series goes.

I got invested. I freaked out. There were keysmashes involved and screaming into the ether. I'm committed to the story now! Can't wait for the next part.
