Super Snake

Rate this book
Way back, before Once-upon-a-time there was the Dreamtime and the bush was in the middle of a drought.

After a storm, one large rainbow curved down. The Super Snake slithered down that rainbow on to the earth and promised the Elders he could help them find water. That Super Snake called out, ‘You can’t have a rainbow without water.

‘Dhurraluwi guuma-li — Come together! Wantima — Rise up! Woorri — Share.’

I really like Gregg Dreise's illustrations. They are so bright and colourful. He has done a brilliant job of bringing the world as he envisions it to life. Mundegutta Gooriya is beautiful; it has so much attitude and is never the same, as it shouldn't be. I appreciate the transparency of the rainbow; it's a simple detail but an important one.

Dreise is a descendant of the Goomelroi/Kamilaroi and Euahlayi people of south-west Queensland and north-west New South Wales. He is telling the creation story of his people, which does include Mundegutta Gooriya, the Super Snake. His people's story is not universal to Australia's indigenous peoples.

He uses a perfect amount of indigenous language. Not just Mundegutta Gooriya, but Yirray, the sun and the core message... ‘Dhurraluwi guuma-li — Come together! Wantima — Rise up! Woorri — Share.’. This is a morality tale but it doesn’t necessarily feel like it. It would be a good inclusion in an indigenous picture story collection, either personal, school or public. I think it would be a fantastic read to for younger children.

Read as part of Popsugar's Reading Challenge 2025 for prompt #5 ‘A book with a snake on the cover or in the title’. There is a snake in the title and Mundegutta Gooriya is on the cover (looking very much like a colourful Frampt from Dar Souls). I really struggled with this prompt. But a picture story book is something and tbh I kinda liked this.
