A little girl named Missy who encounters a mysterious nanny named miss Fanny. At first, Missy tries her best to make Fanny leave, but after several failed attempts, Missy finds Miss Fanny very interesting. Missy learns Miss Fanny lived in many countries and is fluent in several different languages. One evening Mr. Founder, Missy's grandfather and caretaker, invites guests from India to his home to dine with him. During the visit, guests tell Fanny she resembles a painting of a woman that lived in India centuries ago that mysteriously disappeared named Phontonya. Miss Fanny is familiar with the story of Phontonya but insists she looks nothing like the woman in the painting and tells the guests she does not believe Phontonya was a real person. Missy is fascinated by the story of Phontonya and asks Miss Fanny many questions about her, but Miss Fanny Keeps putting her inquiries off and will not discuss the woman. As the story continues, a serious of mysterious events follow and Fanny soon admits to knowing all about the mysterious Phontonya is.
