Three months after the EMP cripples the United States, John Mack and his family find their peaceful new existence shattered when a tyrant seizes control of the nearby town of Oneida. Charles Augustus Morgan is a presidential envoy, sent to restore law and order to the area. But his first order of business is to demand the confiscation of all firearms from the local population. Morgan’s offer is as ugly as the man disarm or die. When John and his family get caught in the middle, the threat jeopardizes everything they’ve struggled to rebuild. Soon John encounters a group of Patriots who’ve sworn to stand against Morgan’s growing despotism. But John will learn that nothing in this new post-EMP America is what it seems—and that the deadliest threats are often the ones you didn’t see coming.
Meh. Spoilers: Book one was a mildly interesting EMP scenario. Book two is a ludicrous account of Russian fifth columnists driving convoys of Russian built trucks across the lower 48 while masquerading as FEMA and sporting documentation forged by a Nigerian email scammer. Will not be looking for book three.
This is the second book in the four part series - Last Stand. The story continues from where it left off from the first book in the series. See my review of the first book Last Stand: Surviving America's Collapse. After an EMP attack render every electronic device renderless, America has gone into dark ages. With acute shortage of food and water there is a lot of civil unrest and in the absence of police or national guards, its chaos everywhere. A lot of Mafias and organized gangs are looting and killing people for food, water and other supplies.
While all this is going on - few months after the EMP attack, a new problem comes in. A person who called himself Charles Augustus Morgan a.k.a the chairman, came to the town of Oneida with secret service type people as bodyguards. He is armed with a presidential decree wherein it is mentioned that the constitution is suspended and that he has been sent to restore law and order. All people are asked to handover their weapons. Those who resisted were branded traiters and either killed or jailed.
John and his family along with Applebies are caught in the middle of all this. That's when John met a group of people who called themselves patriots. Patriots were fighting the chairman for their constitutional rights.
This books is one of those books, where things happen too conviniently for the main character(s), but this also keeps the book a light and casual read.
Like the first book in the series, this is also a short and quick read.
While this book is dedicated to a different topic, but the story continues from where it left off in the first book. It is highly recommended that readers read the first book in the series before reading this book.
I listened to the audio version of the book and its as interesting as the first book. After all the narrator is the same. The audio book is aproximately 6 hours in length and consists 50 chapters.
Before you start this book, please note it is book #2 in a series: you need to have read Last Stand: Surviving America's Collapse, first or this one won’t make much sense to you. This installment continues right after the end of Book #2. If you enjoy post-apocalyptic fiction, this series so far is a pretty good read. Rather than a virus or nuclear event, this one focuses in on an EMP event that follows a man and his family as they try to survive the ensuring chaos and tyranny. The author does a good job of describing the events and making you feel as you are living along with the characters and really makes you think in terms of “what would you do?” if you were caught in a similar situation.
While some of the situations in this novel were similar to other post-apocalyptic novels I have read, to me it was very believable and continues an enjoyable tale: I wouldn’t mind seeing how things shape up in book 3 of the series.
I originally picked this up for free using my Kindle Unlimited borrow vs. its normal price of $3.99, and I certainly got more than $3.99 worth of entertainment value out of it. If you enjoyed the first book in the series, I would recommend reading this one for a continuation of the story.
John Mack and his family have fled to their cabin after their neighborhood has all been but destroyed. Not too long after they have settled in with the Appleby's and have started to live a somewhat peaceful life, they discover a tyrant under presidential orders confiscating guns and imprisoning or murdering those that refused to turn them in. But this Chairman is not what he seems to be at all.
Webber's second novel in the Last Stand Series, Patriots shows how quickly some folks submit without question. John's family has been taken prisoner. Fortunately, there are plenty of Patriots in the area willing to fight for their rights and to free their families.
These books are relatively short. They are each dedicated to one specific topic. They're well written and well-paced. My next two reviews will finish out the series.
The first book was a decent one about post-EMP survival, but this one went a totally different direction of an invading hostile Russian force. I just don't buy that the Russians would have had the force and available actors to insert themselves in such a small town. The cost-benefit alone would have made that an unlikely target.
Another easy read and very entertaining. Must read the first book to understand what's going on here. There was a little more action and suspense as John Mack helped a group of rebels, The Patriots, take down a town run by a dictator. I don't want to say too much for fear of spoilers. It's a short easy read so it's worth your time if you're in to post-apocolytic stories.
★★★★★ Great book! Can’t wait to read it again (and I will). ★★★★☆ Good book. I am glad I read this. ★★★☆☆ OK book. Nothing special but not bad. ★★☆☆☆ Not good. Why did I waste my time? ★☆☆☆☆ Lousy. I didn’t finish.
If for whatever reason, I go back and reread a good book, I will change the rating to five-star because I read it again.
Super short—yay! So much gun and battle blah, blah, blah that I caught myself nodding off. Half the story I wasn’t even sure what was going on. If I hadn’t paid a small fortune for the whole series on audio, this would be a DNF for me.
Mr. Weber appears to have forgotten that the US has a Navy that would be mostly unaffected by an EMP, especially the boomers. Not to mention all the aircraft on carriers.
Foreign troops on U.S. soil. Russian agents are infiltrating U.S. cities to disrupt supplies and communications, reminiscent of the Germans during WWII in the Battle of the Bulge. Our hero John Mack has enlisted with a group of militia called 'Patriots' whose mission it is to identify and remove these Russian agents. Meanwhile, John's family and his friend Tim's family have been held in the city of Oneida ruled by a Russian agent known as 'The Chairman'. It is now up to the Patriots to seize the city, eliminate the Russian soldiers, and free the enslaved citizenry. Obviously John has a personal interest in seeing the mission is successful.
This is the second of four books in the Last Stand series. I don't want to provide an spoilers, so this review will be a bit lean.
The plot is continuing to develop well focusing on the tyrannical government representative who has taken over a nearby town and rules with an iron fist. When the main character's family is kidnapped by the dictator, a collision course is put into motion.
I'm still really enjoying this series and finding that each book is a full and rich story which sets up the next book nicely.
How have I missed this author? This series is somewhat formulaic in the prepper/shtf genre, but the author manages to be unique. He takes a standard situation then upends it. The series also features strong female characters who are more than just eye candy. In this book we come across a town that has been taken over by Russian insurgents pretending to be from the US government. It is a bad situation that the main characters have to deal with. Believe it or not, there is less gunplay than one would expect and more of a mental way through. Lesson? Use the resources you find at hand.
Wow, this was quite a read. I could not let this book go, even tough I had many other things to do. Well written, great story with some cool twists. If you like action, adventure in a not so distopian future, this is a must read. The story about an invasion on American soil explains the events from the first book and lays a nice foundation for a third book in this series, looking forward to read it as well
Book two takes place not too long after the first and like the first it doesn't disappoint! Once again the combination of strong characters, an adventurous story line along with some great survival tactics makes this another great book from an author who may be still new, but I suspect has a very long future in the field of storytelling... At least I hope so!
Last Stand: Patriots is the second post apocalyptic book written by author William H. Weber. It's well-written with a good plot. Warlords is the next story.
While I liked this series, I am sorry to say that it feels to me like someone jumping on the current prepper/survivalist phase and slapped something together to ride that wave.
The story is well written and an easy read but it didn't have, to me, any meat to it.
I have to admit when I first started this series of books I didn't have a lot of hope for it. But now I have found myself pulled into the story line. The characters have grown on me and the plot thickens with each turn of the page. Read this series, you won't be disappointed.
I just found this author and series on Amazon. It combines a very plausible scenario as well as a hero that isn't perfect but is the best that a man could be. I will read them all and hope for more
I was hooked from page one. Great characters, great characters, interesting villains. If your into survival, prepping, post apocolyptic, or anything like that. Read all of this authors book
We learn more about who launched the attack. We also learn more about how the author feels people can be deceived and manipulated by a lie as well as how people will behave when their loved ones are threatened.
