In his latest release, Gary Thomas draws from personal experiences to help readers dismantle twelve common lies Christians believe, leading to the abundant, joyful life we’re reborn for.
Each chapter felt authentic and profoundly personal, as if Thomas was sharing, “Here’s what my transformative experience in Jesus was and how you can experience this too.” These twelve lies are familiar to us all and are presented as real life changing moments. And now, Gary is inviting us to share with him in his journey of reconstructing them.
Over the past several years in family ministry, my wife and I have utilized and blessed others with the solid biblical teachings from Gary Thomas’s earlier works, such as Sacred Marriage and Sacred Parenting. While those books focus on relational dynamics, this one dives deeper into personal spiritual deceptions, making it a natural next step for anyone seeking greater maturity in their faith. Deep down, this was the book I really wanted him to write.
One of the things that makes this book appealing is that it meets people where they are in their faith journeys. For new believers, I can see it would provide a strong foundation by exposing common deceptions early on by helping them build intimacy with God without years of trial and error. Long-time Christians feeling stuck or restless will find fresh “aha” moments that reignite their passion, as Thomas unpacks lies like the need for constant busyness or self-reliance that creep in over time. Those in ministry or leadership roles, like myself, can relate to the personal stories of burnout and rediscovery, gaining tools for sustainable growth. Individuals navigating personal crises like isolation, control issues due to anxiety, or what so many of us have seen recently… disillusionment with church (ch 8); will appreciate the empathetic, non-judgmental approach that leads to freedom and joy. Even skeptics or those questioning their faith might be drawn in by the relatable, experience-based insights that emphasize practical biblical truth over dogma. Overall, its blend of vulnerability, scripture, and encouragement makes it versatile for anyone seeking deeper spiritual fulfillment.
I believe this book is perfect for small groups wanting to grow and deepen their relationship with Him, with each chapter lending itself to meaningful discussions and practical applications.
If you’re feeling stuck or restless in your faith journey, pick up this book. It’s a 5 out of 5 read that could reignite your intimacy with God and help you live the life you were reborn for.
This is a great spiritual formation book in the sense that Gary Thomas takes 12 chapters to dig into areas that keep us looking in the wrong direction in our walk with God. The information "felt" like it was coming from a place of experience, which made the challenges more genuine and caring. Definitely worth the read and effort to cut these things out of our thinking about God!
I love how Gary has intertwined repentance, unlearning, rethinking, and dismantling the lies we once believed or are still believing for a greater intimacy with God - the life we were reborn to live! Thank you, Gary, you continue to be a good shepherd!
This is a much-needed book! Dr. Thomas offers a Biblical and therapeutic perspective on twelve lies that many Christians believe. While each chapter is a basic overview, each one can also be a springboard for further discussion. This book should be adopted by small groups for discussion and accountability. The book is clearly written and well argued. It will be helpful to anyone who engages with it.
