Darkhorse: Harnessing Hidden Potential in War and Life

Rate this book
A transformative war story that challenges traditional views of toughness and leadership, where masculinity develops from empathy, grit is born from failure, and power comes from placing service above self.

In Darkhorse, Amatangelo “AJ” Pasciuti delivers an entirely new war an intense exploration of authentic leadership, sacrifice, and the resilience of the human spirit. By challenging established notions of masculinity and authority, Pasciuti shows that true strength lies in our hidden potential.

Driven to serve by the events of 9/11, AJ enlisted in the Marine Corps at 17 in 2001. He embarked on a 21-year odyssey through some of the most harrowing battles of the Global War on Terror. Serving as an Infantry Marine, Scout Sniper, and Force Reconnaissance Marine, while completing seven deployments across the globe and leading elite teams in high-stakes special operations missions’ unbreakable bonds were forged.

A pivotal moment came during his legendary sniper vs sniper duel with the infamous enemy sniper, Juba–the first sniper battle since the Vietnam War. His actions saved countless lives and recovered a stolen Marine sniper rifle, highlighting how intellect, strategy, and an ability to look at problems differently could transform the nature of warfare.

Driven by a strong commitment to advocate for the voiceless and a desire to push the limits of possibility, AJ set out to reform the Marine Corps Infantry education system by redefining Marine infantry training to make the finest fighting force the world has ever known even better.   The challenge proved to be one of AJ’s toughest battles, confronting the very institution that shaped him. But what kind of person would AJ be if he settled for anything less?

Darkhorse serves as both an impactful memoir and a call to action. It’s a must-read for warriors, leaders, and anyone eager to grasp the strength found in serving others and the boundless potential that resides within us all.

I had the honor and privilege of serving in 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marines alongside CWO3 Pasciuti, and I also fought in Iraq as an M1A1 tanker during the initial invasion in 2003 with 1st Tank Battalion. CWO3 Pasciuti captured the atmosphere, emotions, leadership, humor, fear, chaos, and brotherhood of that era with a level of authenticity that is incredibly rare. While reading about the March Up, I could not put the book down because I felt like I was that 20 year old lance corporal crossing the line of departure as we fought north toward Baghdad.

Too many war books either glorify combat or fail to explain the human side of war. Darkhorse does neither. It tells the truth. Marines who lived through those years will recognize the personalities, the language, the dark humor, the exhaustion, and the burden many of us still carry. For those who never served, this book provides one of the clearest windows into what a generation of Marines experienced after 9/11.

What stood out most to me was that CWO3 Pasciuti never loses sight of the Marines themselves. When I met him, I was a First Lieutenant and the 3/3 Battalion Communications Officer. CWO3 Pasciuti made a point of meeting with me so he could better understand my Marines and ask how he could support the S-6. In nearly 25 years of service, I have never had another leader ask for that kind of meeting. After reading this book, I now understand exactly why he did.

The leadership lessons throughout this book are real because they were forged through hardship, sacrifice, and shared suffering, not corporate buzzwords or hindsight philosophy. You can tell this book was written by someone who genuinely lived through these experiences and never forgot the Marines beside him.

As a current active duty officer who enlisted around the same time as CWO3 Pasciuti, this is one of the few books I have read that truly captures the spirit of the Marines who fought in OIF and OEF.

Gunner Pasciuti, thank you for always looking out for me and my Marines. It was an honor to serve alongside you. Semper Fidelis!

What stood out most was the humility throughout the book. Instead of glorifying rank or titles, it highlights teamwork, trust, accountability, and the human side of leadership. The combat stories are intense and gripping, but the deeper message is about the people behind the mission and the bonds formed through adversity.
Whether you come from the military, business, athletics, or just life in general, Darkhorse gives a powerful perspective on resilience, leadership, and hidden potential. It’s the kind of book that stays with you after you finish it.

Would you buy a book touted by someone
named "Miami Festival", who joined just this month,
and already has made 15 ratings – all 5-star –
and no reviews?

But what if the book has 39 5-star ratings?
Like these:
- 33 have no followers
- 30 have no image
- 13 have never reviewed
- 16 have reviewed only once
- 16 have no surname
- 4 are named "Reader"
- 1 is named "Reader O'Conner"
- 1 is named "Cherry Groves"
- 1 is named "ray", no caps

So . . . nothing suspicious about that, is there?

I just finished Darkhorse and really enjoyed it. What I liked most is that it doesn’t read like someone trying to convince you how impressive they are. AJ tells his story honestly, including the setbacks, mistakes, hard lessons, and moments that shaped him along the way. That made the leadership lessons feel real instead of something pulled from a textbook. He really makes you think… what is it all for? I also watched his podcast on the Shawn Ryan show - he really strikes me as driven by passion to change the culture, not just chasing a paycheck or fame by writing this.

The book does a great job balancing stories from his career with lessons about leadership, accountability, perseverance, and taking care of the people around you. There are plenty of moments that are exciting and intense, but what stuck with me most were the insights about character and the responsibility that comes with leadership.

As a former Marine myself, I appreciated how much AJ emphasizes the team. The accomplishments are impressive, but the focus is consistently on the people he served with, the mentors who helped him, and the Marines he was responsible for leading. That humility comes through throughout the book.

Whether you have a military background or not, there is a lot to take away from Darkhorse. It’s an easy read, full of great stories, and leaves you thinking about what it means to lead well and make the most of the opportunities you’ve been given.

I’d definitely recommend it. It’s the kind of book that keeps you turning pages, but also gives you a lot to reflect on once you finish it.

Darkhorse is more than a war memoir—it’s an honest look at leadership, sacrifice, brotherhood, and what real strength means in combat and life.

Having served alongside AJ Pasciuti, I can say this book reflects the same authenticity and commitment to others that defined him in uniform. AJ does not glorify war or rely on bravado. Instead, he gives readers a clear view of the burden carried by leaders making life-or-death decisions.

What makes Darkhorse compelling is AJ’s willingness to challenge traditional ideas of toughness. He shows that true grit comes from enduring hardship, learning from failure, and continuing to serve others. His reflections on leadership are grounded in humility, empathy, and accountability.

The combat stories and sniper operations are gripping, but the heart of the book is AJ’s determination to improve the institution he loved, even when it meant facing resistance from within.

For veterans, service members, and leaders alike, Darkhorse offers lessons that reach far beyond the battlefield. AJ Pasciuti has written a powerful and deeply relevant book that I highly recommend.

This was an EXCELLENT read that follows the author (AJ Pascuiti) through his Marine Corps career and delves into many aspects of military service.

AJ starts out as a young Marine infantryman and works his way through combat deployments, scout sniper school, more deployments, becomes a scout sniper, more deployments, goes to recon school and becomes recon, and more deployments. Once all of that is completed he transitions into the officer side of the Corps; becoming a rare, uncommon rank ( infantry chief warrant officer gunner). Gunners are said to be unicorns in the Marine Corps because they’re so uncommon. As a Gunner, AJ receives orders to a few different units to get them lined out with his combat expertise. After this period of time he transitions to teaching combat at the School of Infantry (SOI) in California. Here Gunner Pascuiti implements unique tactics and uncommon forms of instruction to mold new Marines into modern day warfighters, capable of keeping up with the evolvement of combat.

Throughout the course of this book, there are many tales of combat, loss, PTSD, brotherhood, and a few laughs here and there.

This was overall a great book that I would recommend

Finally, a war book that says something different.

Darkhorse is an honest look at war, leadership, and the state of the Marine Corps, even when the truth is uncomfortable. AJ Pasciuti challenges conventional thinking and makes a compelling case that the youngest and newest Marines, often the most overlooked and underutilized, may possess the greatest untapped potential.

What makes this book stand out is the breadth of its examples. Pasciuti draws from successes and failures, combat and peacetime experiences, personal triumphs and institutional shortcomings. Rather than simply telling stories, he uses them to answer a larger question: What does all of this mean, and what are we going to do about it?

The result is a book that is insightful, relevant, and surprisingly emotional. At different points it’s funny, gut-wrenching, inspiring, and deeply human. Whether you’ve worn the uniform or not, there’s something here about leadership, service, and hidden potential that will stick with you long after the last page.

You’re in for a ride.

I’m not normally someone who seeks out military books, but this came highly recommended, and I’m so happy I picked it up.

This was not just a military story. I found myself relating to the leadership experiences, both good and bad, throughout the book, as well as the self-doubt the author experienced. I’ve never been in the military, but as a woman working in a corporate job, I found a lot of it surprisingly relatable.

I thought this book was so vividly and cinematically written that I could picture the movie in my head. It needs to be made into a movie.

I couldn’t recommend this more to anyone interested in military stories or leadership lessons. This is a very different book than you would expect just by looking at it. Buy it, read it, you won’t regret the time.

I listened to the Darkhorse audiobook, and hearing it read by AJ Pasciuti himself brought an authenticity and emotional weight you just don’t get from a typical narrator. The stories are gripping, but what stayed with me most was how well the book honors the Marines and service members who were actually there, capturing not just the intensity of combat but the camaraderie, sacrifice, and quiet moments in between.

This isn’t just a war story; it’s a powerful reflection on leadership, service, and hidden potential that feels both humble and inspiring. If you care about the military community or want a raw, honest look at what real leadership under pressure looks like, this book does them justice and is absolutely worth your time.

Absolutely amazing story of an even more amazing military career. This book is easy to read and dives into the complexities of war and life that our troops are thrusted into in support of our freedom.

It was so refreshing to start this story from the perspective of a young Marine and see that perspective transition as the author progresses through his career. Chapters 14 & 15 will yank on your heart strings, so be prepared.

The authors seems to have found a way to deliver all the leadership lessons he learned in his 21 year career and still keep the book to a reasonable length. I guarantee if you are responsible for anyone at all you will benefit from reading this book.

Dark Horse is a powerful book that lets you follow the journey of one of the Marine Corps’ most inspirational leaders. AJ does an amazing job showing both the highs and the lows, giving a real and honest look at leadership, sacrifice, and perseverance. What makes this book stand out even more to me is knowing through personal experience that the leadership and mentorship he writes about are absolutely genuine. The way AJ leads, mentors, and carries himself in real life matches the story completely, which makes the book feel even more authentic and impactful. Definitely an inspiring read and one I’d highly recommend.

Raw, eloquent, and brutally honest. AJ delivers a powerful message of humility, resilience, and heart. Dark Horse provides a perfect balance between the chaos of modern warfare, the toll it takes on the human soul, and the reverence we hold for our fallen Marines. AJ’s work permeates the reader with triumphs, failures, and hard lessons learned. Lessons that can only be gleaned by putting it all on the line more than once. Bravo my friend, you’ve made us all very proud. S/F ABY

This is not your everyday “Military
Memoir ” that glorifies war.

It is a book you want to read more and more and more - you just can’t put it down.

The author describes each life event with an honesty not usually shared. His vocabulary is stellar. As each chapter unfolds, he shares experiences that formed his persona and helped to define a new generational male that isn’t afraid to spread positivity.

WOW!!! DOUBLE WOW!!!

Wake Up Hollywood. This should be a movie!
