I first learned about stoicism in a philosophy class last summer, so when I saw this book’s title, I requested it right away. The author breaks down stoicism in a way that feels clear and digestible, weaving in quotes that stick with you long after reading. One that stayed with me: “Most of us have positive illusions of ourselves.” Another: “We think we are somebody when in all likelihood we are nobody at all.”

This book reminded me of something I often forget—I carry a sense of entitlement, and I cling too tightly to expectations. Stoicism offers a gentle but firm reminder: nothing truly belongs to us, and attachment only deepens our suffering. I found myself pausing often to reflect, realizing how often I create disappointment by expecting more than reality can give.

Overall, this is a great introduction to stoicism, especially for those who are new to the philosophy. It’s a thoughtful, accessible starting point.

Thank you, NetGalley and Cider Mill Press, for the ARC.

I’ve been a fan of Stoicism as a living philosophy for several years, and 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐢𝐜 𝐇𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐭 completely delivers as an excellent guide for anyone looking to bring those timeless principles into daily life. It’s witty, honest, and refreshingly easy to understand - no dense or abstract jargon here, just grounded wisdom that actually sticks.

Every chapter is packed with thoughtful insights, quotes, and real-life examples that make you pause and reflect. It’s not one to rush through; it’s the kind of book you study, underline, and return to often. Gaining new knowledge is great, but this book reminds you that application - actually putting ideas into practice - is the secret sauce where real change happens.

It’s rife with endnotes, citations, and a bibliography, making it a well-researched, solid read. Overall, 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐢𝐜 𝐇𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐭 is a fantastic and engaging book that I highly recommend to anyone interested in personal growth, resilience, or simply living a more mindful, meaningful life.

Special thanks to Cider Mill Press, the author, and NetGalley for the gifted copy

The Stoic Habit surprised me in the best way. I’m not someone who fully identifies with Stoicism, and I came into the book expecting a more rigid, philosophical deep dive. Instead, Dr. Robinson offers something far more accessible: a practical, modern interpretation of Stoic ideas that feels grounded, flexible, and genuinely usable in everyday life.

What I appreciated most is that the book doesn’t demand that you become a capital‑S Stoic to benefit from the principles. The author frames Stoicism as a set of habits and mindsets that can support resilience, clarity, and emotional steadiness without requiring you to adopt the entire worldview. That made the material feel welcoming rather than prescriptive.

The writing is clear and engaging, and the examples are relatable without drifting into cliché. Even as someone who doesn’t live by Stoic philosophy, I found myself bookmarking sections and reflecting on how these ideas could fit into my own routines and decision‑making. The book strikes a nice balance between ancient wisdom and modern application, and it never loses sight of the human side of self‑improvement.

Overall, this is a thoughtful, well‑structured guide that works whether you’re deeply invested in Stoicism or simply curious about incorporating a few of its habits into your life. I enjoyed it more than I expected and came away with practical takeaways I can actually use.

Thank you to NetGalley for my copy to review. I do enjoy getting the opportunity to read and review upcoming books.

The Stoic Habit by Dr. Bob Robinson is comforting in sharing how you can have control over your thoughts and actions in a chaotic world. There are quotes from famous Stoics like Epictetus and Seneca, but if you wanted to learn about them, this is not the book for that. This book will complete a library for all the basic ideas of living your life like a Stoic, or at least romanticizing that lifestyle. This book uses science to explain how and why we have evolved in ways that influence current experiences, and how to overcome them using a Stoic mindset.
