Welcome to Lily Rock Holiday Mystery is a prequel spin-off series to the Lily Rock Mystery series. Enjoy fresh adventures with the characters you love!
Bonnie Hardy, a retired professional turned author, is celebrated for her two enthralling cozy mystery series. The first, set in the picturesque mountain town of Lily Rock, features amateur sleuth Olivia Greer, known for her uncanny ability to draw out confessions from the most unlikely people. The second series, set in Palm Desert, features the mid-life duo mentalist Rex Redondo and his down to earth next door neighbor doula Vivienne Rose. Inspired by Agatha Christie, Bonnie's captivating tales of mystery and community masterfully blend fast-paced whodunits with clever sleuthing.
I normally save 1 star ratings for books I don’t finish but this book was just awful. I only finished it because I was listening to the audiobook at 2.5x speed and it was only just over an hour long.
The main character doesn’t have a single redeemable quality. She’s rude, judgemental and just mean spirited & I can’t stand her!
I LOVED getting to know our female main character and wish this could have been a little bit longer! I loved how Janis was the perfect person for the job! Although, I do have to say that if this had been real, there was no way that a chief would be okay with her just spilling her secret to the people she did. If she was truly undercover there is no reason for her to spill it. She would have needed to stay undercover so that she could suss out who was doing what without interference. Which kind of gave me the ick. Obvi this isn't real, but I would have hoped that the writer would have stuck closer to a real life scenario.

What am I missing that this book is rated at 3.5 stars? It reads like it was written by a bot who just binged 90s soap operas to learn about people and how they interact. The protagonist, Dixie Jones, is an undercover cop with no redeeming qualities. She’s grossly arrogant, mean spirited, and just stupid. Sent to a small town to investigate a not very interesting mystery, tasked with talking to the locals to learn what’s going on, she makes a sport of being so incredibly rude to people in the hopes that THEY’LL QUIT TALKING TO HER. She delivers over-the-top one liners that don’t even make sense and rains on every parade she comes near. She’s not even a jerk, she’s like a caricature of a kid’s idea of a grown-up jerk. And this is the entirety of her personality as developed in this book. Her boss, who she occasionally checks in with, yells at her randomly and inexplicably, which goes completely uncommented on, like that’s just how real people communicate. The town hottie is incomprehensibly attracted to her though I don’t think she once says anything kind or remotely genuine to him. And the narrator can’t decide if Dixie has a southern drawl or not. Pick one, please! At just over 3 hours, I am going to hate-finish the book. Finding a good cozy Christmas mystery is so hard! I see other books in the series are well liked, hopefully this was the author’s first attempt at a book and she greatly improved, or finally got an editor, or something.
Nope nope nope this was so not it for me. I guess some people might like it, but I managed to read about 70 pages before having to give up.
The big issue I had with the story is the main character Dixie. She is so annoyingly cocky. Don’t get me wrong, I looooove a good confident woman, but this was too much. She was always chatting shit to her superior just to get a rise out of him, but not even in a let’s-fight-the-authority kind of way, just stupidly. Another example is her chatting to a guy about motorbikes, and he says she does know a lot for an insurance worker. She then goes “You’re not gonna catch me, buddy. I got moves you can’t even imagine” and then shoots off her amazing excuse, which is that motorbikes also get insured. Wow girl what a fucking move, surely he was blown away *eyeroll* He already knew she was police undercover btw. She even runs in a house on fire for no reason at all, and as soon as she gets in she breaks her foot like a fool and needs to be carried out by firemen that should actually be saving actual victims.
She also walks into a room and obviously has to think about how all the men there are soooo attracted to her and the woman is obviously going to hate her because our MC is super hot and is distracting the other girl’s man. UGHHHGGHHG this kind of veiled misogyny is the worst. Dixie is basically telling us how bad the other woman is, but to do that she attacks the fact the other is wearing a tight dress (a crime!!) and is all over a man (straight to prison!) and is annoyed when she interrupts (how dare she??!!). But really all this tells us is that Dixie is a judgmental person that likes to boring down other women to show off how cool she is instead. This is old and tired.
Moreover, trying to make this other woman, called Skye, look bad doesn’t work when you are a piece of shit yourself. At some point they are decorating for the holidays and DIxie notices that other religions are represented, and then “challenges” Skye because there is no Ramadan representation, which maybe it was okay since it was not Ramadan at that particular moment??? But okay. When Skye then says she has a flag for that too, Dixie just goes on a tirade about how she doesn’t get why they can’t just get their own tradition instead of “including every Tom, Dick and Harry?”
Which is really not the jab she thinks as maybe the town has people of other religions and thus those are the town’s own traditions already, she just racist. Secondly, celebrating other religions is not a bad thing??? And thirdly, why were you criticising the lack of Islam rep, and then did a 180 turn and said the other traditions should not be celebrated? Is it maybe only because you want to be a little criticising bitch?
Skye by the way replies saying she better not say such shit again otherwise people get mad there, so all the effort Dixie makes to show her as a bad person is actually just showing Dixie is the real villain all along.
I feel like I’m shooting on the ambulance by being so critical, this novella has such few reviews and it’s not the best to have a negative one in the mix, but I just couldn’t keep it in. Maybe the book continues with a complete change of Dixie’s personality and a looooot of growth, but I am not eager to stick around to see that happen.

I’ll confess that Cozy mysteries aren’t a genre that I normally read. I'm really into all the blood, guts, gore, and sex. Those are the things that make a fictional tale lifelike. Still, I have read a few well-crafted cozies from time to time in the past, so I thought I had an idea of what laid in store for me when I downloaded ‘Tis the Season, but the story was very different from any cozy mystery that I had ever read. The story was well written, and highly entertaining, but I think the book’s blurb is a little misleading. ‘Tis the Season is a cozy mystery, but it plays out more like sitcom. The character dialogue and the actions are all that I would expect to find with a sitcom. Still, it was a quick, fun read. An awesome holiday read, which was when I had downloaded it, just before the Christmas holidays.
If cozies are your genre of choice, you will love ‘Tis the Season, and all the books in the Lily Rock Mystery series. They're just not this adrenaline jockey's cup of strong black coffee.
I wasn't sure if I'd like this as much as a regular cozy mystery since I'm used to cozy murders and a little more action than just a missing nativity scene piece. I gotta admit, I was suspicious of everyone for absolutely no reason, lol. But this book actually drew me in, sorta how the town of Lily Rock drew Janis Jets in when she was undercover as Dixie Jones. It was pretty cool how she went in with all these tough as nails ideas that she'd solve the mystery of some anonymous emails the town was getting then, bada-bing, she's outta there and off to L.A. Not quite the case, and I believe she might be a little like the Grinch where her heart grew several sizes at the end of the book!
This makes me want to start the regular Lily Rock series since I've had the first book now for a while. And I'm more eager now to see what's in store next for this prequel series. I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of this book provided by the author via BookSprout, and my opinions are my own.
This wasn't a bad book. There wasn't quite as much mystery or depth as I'm used to, but it was well written. The main thing was, it's pretty clear this was written as a prequel for fans of the four (soon to be five) book Lily Rock series.
If you are a fan of the series, I bet you'll love this behind the scenes glimpse of your favourite characters meeting "before it all began". For me as an introduction to the series, it was a little lacking. The setting and writing style kept me interested enough though. I have a feeling once I've read the first couple of actual series books I'll appreciate this one more.

This is a prequel, so not much mystery going on. But it’s a nice way to establish some of the characters who will be featured in the series, as well as a conflict between the “Old Rockers” and those in the town who believe that times they are a’ changin. The main character, whom we'll call Dixie Jones, is introduced and in a very brief time, we learn a lot about her feelings, thoughts, and basic character. A couple of things did stick out as odd or unlikely (but, spoilers, so…). And I thought that the love interest situation was handled very oddly. But overall, I think that this prequel promises an interesting and readable series.

I am always curious about the behind the scenes stories of my favorite literary characters. I'm particularly curious how characters ended up where I discover them within the pages of the book. Since the residents of Lily Rock have become some of my favorite characters I was excited that 'Tis the Season reveals the beginnings of several of the main characters central The Lily Rock Mystery trilogy. Despite the short length of this novella, 'Tis the Season has plenty of intrigue, mystery, and as always quirky characters. I don't want to give away any spoilers by even given the briefest of summaries, but I promise that you won't be disappointed in this cozy little read.

Janis is in her 30s and going through the police academy so she can work in the larger cities. Nearing the end, her captain sends her undercover to Lily Rock to find out who is sending emails about weird stuff happening. Things fall apart at first but she is befriended by the local librarian and soon knows all the locals. Bikers, the Old Rockers, a bar burning, drugs found and a death, keep the characters busy. Great characters with lots of personality and sass, a storyline with intriguing situations and timing, and an ending that brings out her real story along with a surprise. Well done.

This book serves as a meet and greet of some of the characters we will come across as we enjoy this series. Officer Dixie Jones was at first disappointed at her assignment to the small town of Lily Rock to investigate a theft of the baby Jesus statue needed for the tree lighting ceremony that was planned. But she finds things behind the scenes will keep her far more busy than she had envisioned, and she gets to know many people who appreciate her and make her feel like she belongs. Will her investigation bring joy to the town and continue to attract many more friends? Can she solve the mystery and make everyone’s Christmas enjoyable?
Despite the short length of this novella, 'Tis the Season has plenty of intrigue, mystery, and as always quirky characters. As a reader of the Lily Rock mystery series, I loved getting this glimpse of the back story of some of the characters. I don't want to give away any spoilers by even given the briefest of summaries, but I promise that you won't be disappointed in this cozy little read. Thank you Bonnie Hardy for the mysteries!.

Janis Jets, aka Dixie Jones, arrives in Lily Rock sent undercover to figure out what is going on. Anonymous emails have been sent to try and get a police officer for the town, some town folk want it others want it to stay as is. Janis gets the off vibe feeling in the town and starts to investigate. Stuff starts to happen but might be all harmless. In the end we see how Janis fits into Lily Rock and if they will accept a police officer.

I've read several books in the Lily Rock series, and I'm pretty sure I "drank the Lily Rock Kool Aid" too.
This quirky yet oddly loyal town really gets under your skin, and hooks you on discovering various aspects of the town and it's real characters.
I don't remember reading this particular story before. I found officer Janis Jetts irritated, agitating, and more caring than she might want to let on.
I missed some later additions to the heart of Lily Rock - and am charmed by the sometimes lethal small town.
'Tis the Season is book #1 in the Welcome to Lily Rock Holiday Mystery series by Bonnie Hardy.
Dixie isn’t the typical main character in a cozy mystery. She’s not thrilled with being sent to Lily Rock but hopes it will lead to better things once she solves the case of a missing baby Jesus statue. The town is made up of interesting characters. This was a nice, quick read.

A cosy holiday mystery that is fun short and funny. A new police officer is assigned to go undercover in the little town of Lily Rock. Dixie Jones (her undercover name) isn't enamored at all by this assignment especially during the holidays. But Lily Rock is a friendly place and soon Dixie starts feeling like she belongs. As I understand it, this is part of an established series but I read it as a, stand alone and wasn't lost. The audiobook was good.
This is the 5th Welcome to Lily Rock book I've read...and as usual, Bonnie Hardy does not disappoint. 'Tis the Season is Holiday Mystery (#1) and a prequel. We're introduced to some of the characters and get their back stories. It's short, a fun read, and makes me wish that Bonnie would hurry up and get the next one out!! Thank you Bonnie Hardy for making charming mysteries!
As a reader of the Lily Rock mystery series, I loved getting this glimpse of the back story of some of the characters. It's a story about connections and hospitality, misread first impressions, all set in a cozy mountain town at Christmas. It sets the scene for the rest of the books. Quick read and highly recommended.
I liked this story. The characters were fun. I loved the small town of Lily Rock. It was refreshing. I loved "Dixie". The Lily Rock residents were well described. I enjoyed how the author set the scene. Everything felt so real and I was entertained. I received a complimentary copy of this book from Booksprout and I freely left this review.
Dixie Jones is undercover in the small town of Lily Rock hoping to turn a success here into a transfer to the big city. This is the background story for the Lily Rock series introducing many of the characters. It's a short read but still an intersting cozy mystery.

Smart and sassy Dixie Jones runs headlong into Michael Bellemare and the sparks fly. Romance and intrigue abound, all wrapped up in Christmas preparations. A great stand alone read or festive holiday prequel for fans of Lily Rock Mysteries.
I really enjoy the small town cozy atmosphere and the clever character development. It was definitely a plus that I got to support a local author. Will definitely be continuing, on with the series. bonus that they are included free on audible plus.
This was a good story, the characters are interesting, the plot is fairly straight forward, and the premise is find what's wrong and fix it. I do recommend this book.
