This was a fun read and I think young children, those that can read to those that like being read to would love this stoy. It is reminiscent of Old Yeller but with a happy ending.

Tom is the owner of Spud, a dog of unknown origin. Tom's mother won't let the dog in the house but Tom get him to jump though the window every night. During the night, he gives Spud leftover scraps and the dog gets sick. Tom's mother hears it and comes to the bedroom. Thinking quickly so the dog isn't caught, Tom rushes to the bathroom and pretends to be sick.

The next day, Spud follows Tom to school and during class, he starts barking. Spud jumps through the window at what he thinks is a signal from Tom and lands on one of the other kids. School ends early for the day.

Tom wanders with Pete and they go looking for berries. They come to a field that they have to cross but there is one thing that prevents that. A hug bull. Spud has disappeared and comes out of the trees chasing a rabbit. Both animals run under the bull and the bull starts chasing the dog and rabbit. They go through the garden, tearing it up, under the clothesline, the bull wearing some of the clothes, then under the chicken hutch--the bull gets stuck in the hutch. The two kids and the dog disappears before they can get in trouble.

It's now summer and Tom goes fishing. The fish aren't biting so he wanders down the stream and tries to cross a big log. Spud warns him but Tom falls in and gets hurt. He feels that he is pulled out of the water and then passes out. He regains a bit of consciousness and feels being pulled along. After two days, his parents find him. Tom is hurt really bad and the doctor doesn't know if he will make it. Spud is outside, worried about his friend and hears Tom feebly call his name. Spud jumps though the window and all is well.

This is a great beginning to a series about a boy and his dog.
