Revenge is a powerful motivator for action. So is love.
She wears violet lipstick. Gloria Morris is an esteemed private detective, a kindly woman who champions the gentle and innocent, a fearsome virago who dishes out harsh justice to the evil and guilty. She is also a lover, and her inamorata embraces her tenderness and will do nothing to inhibit Gloria’s explosive sense of honor. Local politicians know the world is a better place because of Gloria. Her street contacts will kill for her.
Now Gloria must ascertain why people around her are dying, each one involved with a past mutual acquaintance. She investigates and hunts throughout The City. Businesspeople, underground doctors, lawyers, thieves, household servants, and hired assassins enter the fracas as victims or perpetrators. She unearths a femme fatale whose devotion to a dead socialite and killer morphs into a storm of rage that drives a murderous revenge. Is Gloria next on the woman’s roll call of victims?
Private detective Gloria Morris is trying to work out why people involved with a mutual acquaintance from her past are dying. When Gloria realises she might be next on the person’s hit list, she quickly gets to work uncovering the truth.
Gloria is not your typical detective. I know her from previous Gloria Morris mystery stories, and always find her approach to solving cases unique. It is helpful if you have read the other stories in the series, but if not this also works perfectly standalone. G.R. Browda always gives enough for the reader to understand Gloria’s motives and past to help introduce her in each story. This time I really hoped she would start making connections before it was too late because she really was in danger herself. Even Gloria seemed to realise this case was a little too close to her personally for comfort. That’s what made her the perfect person to uncover the truth, she was right in the path of the person they needed to catch.
The way the story unfolds really takes the reader along with Gloria, having the same experiences and getting the full picture of what she knows. There is always a twist and this one was truly unexpected. With the motivation behind the murders being revenge, when Gloria had put all the pieces together it was fascinating how it all linked to one person’s devotion and desire for revenge because of their loyalty to a dead socialite. I have no idea how Gloria had figured it all out to the level of detail she had, but it just showed her own devotion to helping keep the streets safe.
Another great Gloria Morris mystery! They just get better and better!
