You Shouldn’t Have Done That – the gripping psychological thriller perfect for fans of Lisa Jewell, Liane Moriarty, and Sally Hepworth.
Thank you so much Netgalley & Dreamscape for an advanced copy of this book!!
Found family doesn't always mean forever family! I love a "found family" story as much as the next person. But I thoroughly enjoyed this uno reserve version and watching one completely fall apart
My anxiety was on wet Pop Rocks this ENTIRE BOOK!!!! I would absolutely love a sequel! 😭
The unraveling of the two families in question is so real & raw . Some might find the ending a little too "over the top" but it really worked for me! Like the cherry on top of the perfect Sunday. Because at the end of the day it might not be probable but it's MORE than possible. Especially when it comes to a mama bear with her young.
I have already recommended this book to a few people & will definitely be recommending it to more. Honestly, this is one of those books you start recommending to people when we're only halfway done but 100% in love. And you just know it's going to end great anyway.
I just searched the thesaurus for another word for "page-turner" since I am tired of seeing it used to describe just about every new thriller that's released. I found nothing worthy, so here goes: OMG, this book was an absolute, certifiable PAGE-TURNER, in that the only time I ceased reading it was when I couldn't stay awake for even one more tap.
Things I loved about this novel:
--This is a missing person mystery, sure, but there is nothing "typical" about it. The circumstances, characters, setting and resolution are completely original. (That's another cliche often used--"wholly original." This one was.) --The four mc's--Ivy, Jane, Brad and Cal--are fully developed, start to finish. They evolved. Which is not to say that the secondary characters didn't ring true. The ones who mattered--like Emerson and Lincoln, for example, were never given short shrift. Everyone in the large cast came alive. --The story arc is so sharp, so on point, this book could be used in a creative writing class on "how to craft an effective thriller." --Short chapters. --No wasted words. No unnecessary descriptions. Just the plot, ma'am, thank you very much. --So much action. Even when people were sitting around hotel rooms or their living rooms or looking at their phones, I felt a constant forward energy. --Red herrings that weren't insipid or irrelevant. --Violence that made sense. --The characters' internal dialogues were authentic. Alterman knows how suburban families behave behind closed doors--this much is obvious. --The fact that it ended with someone who is going to be looking over their shoulders for a long time to come made me smirk with pleasure.
I've read every book Alterman has written and am a huge fan of her writing style. It's clean, clear and consistently smart. All her suspense books are fantastic. I adored her memoir. And now she has a romcom being released in June. Color me tickled.
This thriller kept me on the edge of my seat with speculation, as I tried to guess what’s next. Just when I thought everything was laid out, another twist was dropped peaking my interest even more. Definitely had some “I didn’t see that coming” moments. I had a love-hate relationship with some of these characters, as they really drew my emotions out. Jane & Ivy have been best friends for two decades. This friendship began when their sons Brad and Cal met in preschool. The two families have been close ever since. Now as young adults, Brad and Cal are roommates. But when Cal disappears, speculations fly, merging a wedge between the two families as Brad was the last person to see Cal before his disappearance. Brad’s behavior could be considered suspicious, and the main question everyone is wondering is why would Brad not report his roommate and childhood best friend missing? The secrets are slowly revealed as the chapters continue.
I thoroughly enjoyed this story and this was my first read from this author, but I am very interested in more of their work. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
This book has some great reviews, so I'm wondering what I'm missing...
None of the characters were likeable, except little Jean-Claude the Frenchie.
Each chapter changed which character's perspective it was, but all in third hand. This was done well, and you could feel their personalities coming through.
Part 1 was good, building the character's back story, suspense and mystery.
Parts 2, 3 and 4 were just unrealistic and stupid, really ruined the book for me.
3.5 probably - Cal deserved it and then some smh His character did develop, but it just made me hate him even more lol. No main character was perfect though of course. Out of all the potential reasons for Cal to be taken it was a fun surprise that it was that explanation + his ending made me want to punch him in the face What an ungrateful lil b*tch

I found the book a little slow at the beginning, but then the pacing improved. I like books about friends.
Here, you have two sets of friends: the mothers, Jane and Ivy. Then, you have their sons, Cal and Brad. Over twenty years is a long time to be friends.
All the characters are well created, and I felt uneasy with the police investigation.
I hope to review more by Liz Alterman in the future. You Shouldn’t Have Done That is immersive and mysterious.

Long time friends are a blessing when the whole family gets along. Jane Whitaker and Ivy Chapman along with their husbands and sons have been best friends for years. They are looking forward to vacation together, but tragedy strikes. Their sons Cal and Brad were skiing in Wyoming, BUT only Brad came home. The families are torn apart as Brad seems less than cooperative about the circumstances surrounding Carl’s disappearance? In stead of working together to find Cal, the families relationship starts to strain. It does not help that Cal’s sister Emerson starts vilifying Brad. This nail-biter shows you how far a family might go to protect their children. Secrets come out and the the twists keep coming.
Fantastic book! The audio was so incredible. The narrator did the best voices for multiple characters. It made this thriller very entertaining. Highly recommend if you are looking for a suspenseful story that focuses on how well do you really know your friends…AND your family members.
What a wild ride this book was. Crazy things just kept happening and when you thought it was winding down, you got another surprise! I loved the different POVs in this story because you really got to see where each character was at in their journey and the inner workings of their minds. I would definitely read another book by this author.
Now there is a lot of use for the titular phrase throughout this novel as nearly every character needs to hear "You Shouldn't Have Done That!" at least once (often much more), but one thing YOU should do is dive into this book. It's a twisty, pleasing mystery that takes readers right into a couple of "perfect" suburban homes and leaves them feeling...glad this is fiction.
Ivy and Jane have been friends since their sons, Brad and Cal, were little. The boys are now adults, so the families, which also include dads and added siblings, most notably Emerson, Cal's unlikable younger sister, have been tied together for a long time. Events that take place in this novel - namely but not exclusively Cal's disappearance and some related assumptions made about Brad - guarantee that whether they like it or not, they'll be connected forever.
Few features are more frustrating to me in a thriller or mystery than (1) an obvious throughline and (2) flat characters. I want to be at least a little surprised by something and know enough about the characters to care about the outcome. Wow, does Alterman come through with solid surprises and complex characters. The plot is well constructed, the pacing is on point, and the characters operate in ways that are believable to their incoming development.
Folks who enjoy a tightly constructed mystery/thriller will find what they're looking for here. I know I did.
*Special thanks to NetGalley and Dreamscape Media for this alc, which I received in exchange for an honest review. The opinions expressed here are my own.
Two families that have been close since the preschool years get torn apart when one family’s son goes missing and the other family’s son is the prime suspect. This was told from multiple POVs which was insightful to hear how they were each perceived by others compared to how they saw things from their side. Packed with inflated egos, jealousy, guilt, selfishness, and mystery… I ate up every bit of it.
Loved the narration! All the characters were well done and their essence was captured just right.
Thank you NetGalley and Dreamscape Media for this ALC. This review will be shared on NetGalley and Goodreads.
It was okay, the first few chapters dragged a little in my opinion, but once the story got to rolling it was good. A nice thriller with some messed up toxic mothers at the height of it.
Thank you to Netgalley and publishers for the e-ARC
Two moms. Longtime best friends. Their sons head out for a ski trip, but only one comes home. And just like that, everything starts to crack.
I devoured the first half of this audiobook in one sitting. I was completely pulled into the drama, the shifting loyalties, and the unraveling of these two deeply entangled families. This is the kind of thriller that isn’t just about solving a mystery. It’s about watching people self-destruct. And I was absolutely here for it.
The characters aren’t likable, but they are intriguing. I couldn’t wait to see what wild thing someone would say or do next. It’s one of those stories that asks how far you’d go to protect your child. Apparently, pretty damn far.
I wouldn’t say there’s a huge shocking twist, but there’s plenty of jaw-dropping behavior. People refuse to communicate, behave badly, and then double down. The choices are bold, sometimes unhinged, but always entertaining.
Cat Protano nails the narration. With several points of view, it could have gotten messy, but she kept everything clear and distinct. I never once felt confused about who she was speaking for. That made it an easy, bingeable audio listen.
No heroes here. Just bad behavior. This is a dark domestic drama full of toxic friendships, shady kids, and moms making some truly questionable moves. Nobody comes out completely clean, and honestly, that’s what made it fun for me.
Thank you to Dreamscape Media, NetGalley, and Liz Alterman for the ALC (Advance Listening Copy) in exchange for my honest review.

About...
Jane Whitaker, mother of Cal, and Ivy Chapman, mother of Brad, have been best friends for twenty years. Their friendship began when their sons, Cal and Brad, attended the same preschool.
Cal Whitaker and Brad Chapman, now roommates, join their families for a ski trip to Wyoming. This seemingly innocent trip to an Airbnb in December becomes the setting for a series of events that will change their lives forever.
However, their friendship is tested when only ONE of the boys returns from skiing. Where is Cal, and why didn't Brad report him missing?
Things heat up with suspicions, and tensions are high when Cal's sister, Emerson, posts online, igniting a battle against Brad.
The two mothers find themselves on opposite sides of the issue. How far will each mother go to protect her family? And what happens when saving one son means destroying the other?
The deepest and darkest secrets begin to UNRAVEL....
My thoughts...
Welcome to the DARK side of domesticity where no one is as they appear. Trust NO one. The title 'You Shouldn't Have Done That' is a fitting reflection of the characters' actions and the consequences they face. You must read and discover the who, why, and how!
A sizzler of a thriller! Unpredictable. Wicked. Super-twisty. Intense Suspense. The month of December has never been so chilling.
YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE DONE THAT takes a disturbing look at friendship, trust, addictions, dangers of social media, and obsession in the modern world, and how far we will go to protect our secrets and those we love. How well do you know those closest to you?
The mystery of the missing son leads to a sinister past of dark, twisted, shocking secrets and MURDER, with a cast of vile characters out for revenge. The chilling nature of the story will keep you thrilled and excited throughout.
The author cleverly builds suspense and tension, leading to one twist and surprise after another. Multi-layered, complex, and twisty —told from alternating POVs (Brad, Cal, Ivy, Jane, Emerson, Lincoln), keeping you on the edge of your seat to try and uncover this mystery.
Mind-bending and terrifying. Lives are IMPLODING. A shared history and DNA hold families together, but nothing can restore their bond or keep them close moving forward.
Blame, escape, survive, or die? Choices and consequences. Do not expect to like any of the characters, as they are highly dysfunctional and deliciously wicked, but you cannot turn away. Dark and unsettling, you are not quite sure where the author is leading you, but the element of surprise keeps you engaged and excited throughout the book.
From a ski slope in Wyoming to a pond and finally to a cabin fire in Georgia, the story unfolds through the perspectives of multiple characters. We delve into their minds and witness their transformation from seemingly normal to unhinged and murderous as their past demons and present circumstances collide, driving them to extreme actions.
The book is filled with family drama and psychological suspense, featuring a twisty ending that will leave fans of domestic thrillers thoroughly satisfied.
Alterman deftly employs alternating perspectives, allowing readers to gain insight into the minds of these complex characters. Her style is engaging and surprising. I also recommend her previous book, The House On Cold Creek Lane, for a taste of her compelling storytelling.
Audiobook...
I had the privilege of reading the e-book and later listening to the audiobook narrated by Cat Protano, who delivered an engaging performance for all voices, keeping me hooked to the end with mystery and intrigue in this chilling domestic suspense. The audiobook version is an excellent choice for those who prefer to listen to their thrillers.

This one is for fans of the author and those who enjoy twisty family dramas, suburban scandals, and domestic suspense. Fans of Sally Hepworth, Mary Kubica, Samantha M. Bailey, Jenova Rose, Aggie Blum Thompson, Lisa Jewell, KL Slater, Emily Shiner, Robin Mahle, and Miranda Rijks will find much to like here.
This was my first read by this author and so I wasn't too sure what to expect, but I absolutely loved the front cover which really drew me in and had me wondering what went on here.
I never read blurbs so did go in totally blind which I love.
This took a little to get going, which I quite enjoyed having the scene set and introducing the characters and their relationships well.
Then Cal goes missing and his roommate and long time friend is acting suspiciously and I was immediately put on edge and ready to work through what happened.
I loved that we watch this from a case pov, what happened to Cal and what does Brad know or have to do with it - but we also see the ripples of this affecting the two mums, who have also have this life long friendship - but this really does shake up this bond and show us what a mum is really capable of when defending their child, no matter how old they are!
As a mum myself, I found this quite thought-provoking.
Is this how I'd react - how far would I go to find and also to protect - how would it make me feel towards my friend.
The characters were really well presented and developed throughout the story and I definitely had changing feelings for some as the case unfolds and the twists come fast.
The writing style had me on edge throughout the investigation.
Unsure which way things would play out, but also a real dread and uncomfortableness for the two mums too.
I really enjoyed this and looks forward to reading more from this author in the future.

You Shouldn't Have Done That was the first book I have read by Alterman and I was gripped immediately. Secrets, strained friendships, and revenge are just some of the themes of this book.. and I am here for all of it! Filled with suspense and tension, this multi-layered and multiple POV novel will definitely keep you on the edge of your seat!
Thank you to NetGalley, Liz Alterman, and Inkubator Books for this ARC. Expected release date is March 23rd 2025.
WOW! Twisty, spine-chilling, deliciously thrilling where nothing is what it seems. I started reading and even though it took me 11 days to finish (ADHD brain and reading multiple books at once🤦♀️) I enjoyed every single second of this psychological suspense story of deceit, greed, suspicion, what it takes to protect your family. The twists and turns were plentiful and I was gobsmacked when I read the compelling conclusion.
You Shouldn’t Have Done That by Liz Alterman was an incredibly captivating mystery thriller. I listened to it as an audiobook narrated by the talented Cat Protano, who brought the story to life. Wow just wow! The author’s skillful storytelling drew me in from the very beginning. The narrative revolved around family drama, best friend neighbors, and childhood best friends entangled in a perplexing who-dunnit. The story was realistic and brimming with unexpected twists that kept me on the edge of my seat until the very end. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good mystery.
What happens when one young man goes missing when a pair of best friends send their sons out skiing together? This is exactly Jane and Ivy's predicament. Cal is missing and though Brad is his roommate, he hasn't reported him.
Wow, this book! I had a feeling there was going to be much more underneath the basic storyline and I was right. There were so many secrets and twists in this one, it was so exciting to listen to on audio. With on point narration, I was hooked from start to finish.
Two families that have been friends for years have been put to the test when their sons (Cal and Brad) go skiing together and only one returns. The moms who are also best friends find themselves at odds as everyone starts blaming one another.
When I tell you this was a juicy story, I am not exaggerating! I absolutely loved this book. You have the domestic drama vibe but also with lots of unexpected twists and turns! You’re constantly wondering what will happen next as each character surprises you. Definitely a must read!
The Whitakers and Chapmans, childhood neighbours, embark on a Wyoming vacation. However, Brad Chapman and Cal Whitaker’s skiing trip takes a sinister turn when one of them mysteriously disappears.
I devoured this captivating mystery/thriller in just a couple of hours! Although the characters weren’t particularly likeable, they were all well-developed and believable. The author also delved into the modern world of social media and influencers, adding depth to the story. While one plot point became increasingly implausible and far-fetched, the author redeemed herself with a shocking and satisfying ending. I’m definitely adding this author to my reading list and will eagerly anticipate their next book.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the advanced copy in exchange for my honest review.
At first, I really enjoyed this book. Part one had me hooked and really trying to figure out where Cal was. However as soon as Brad started telling his lawyer about a never before heard of character and their connection to Cal, the story began to derail for me. That was so obviously going to be a sticking point, and the way that came to fruition made absolutely no sense to me. Part two was so out of left field and left me with so many questions that were never answered. It only got worse for me from there. In what world would foul play not be suspected in Emerson’s disappearance after she single handedly ruined Brads life? Make it make sense. Two stars only because I was invested enough to finish it.
