Her symbol, the red oleander, can be variously interpreted as frailty or as the red badge of courage. But Nandini escapes being defined as just a symbol. Awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913 "because of his profoundly sensitive, fresh and beautiful verse, by which, with consummate skill, he has made his poetic thought, expressed in his own English words, a part of the literature of the West."

Gitanjali (Song Offerings), Gora (Fair-Faced), and Ghare-Baire (The Home and the World) are his best-known works, and his verse, short stories, and novels were acclaimed—or panned—for their lyricism, colloquialism, naturalism, and unnatural contemplation. His compositions were chosen by two nations as national anthems: India's Jana Gana Mana and Bangladesh's Amar Shonar Bangla.

সোনার খনির দেশ যক্ষপুরী, শ্রমিকরা নিত্য খুড়ে চলেছে সোনার মোহে; বের হতে চাইলেও নিস্তার তাদের নেই।খনির সর্দার-মোড়লদের কাছে তাদের মানবিক মর্যাদাটুকু নেই। ওদের কাছ মজুররা একটা চিহ্নিত সংখ্যা মাত্র। নিপীড়িত শ্রমিকরা এক আবর্তে খেটে চলে। দিনে খাটুনি রাতে নেশা। মুক্তির কথা অন্তরে পৌছায় না। রাজারও সেই দশা। লোভের বশে তারও গন্ডি সীমিত। সকলকে দমিয়ে রাখতে শক্তিশালী আমলাতান্ত্র কায়েম করা রাজাই ওদের জালের বাইরে বেরোতে পারে না। মুক্তির বাসনা জাগলেও সেখানে পৌঁছানো যায় না সহজে। পণ্ডিতরা সব বোঝে তবুও জীবনের মোহে তারাও মুক্তির আশা থেকে দূরেই থাকে। ধর্মের ধ্বজাধারীরাও মানে মুক্তিদাতা একজন আর পার্থিব অন্নদাতা আরেকজন। ওদের ব্যবহার করে শাসনের অস্ত্র হিসেবে। তাও মুক্তি, আনন্দ, ও উচ্ছলতার সাধনা অন্তত কেউ জিইয়ে রেখে ছড়িয়ে দেয় অরেকজনে।
রক্তকরবী যেহেতু রূপক-সাংকেতিক নাটক আর এর কাহিনী সোজাসাপ্টা অক্ষরে তুলে ধরা হয়নি তাই এর মর্ম পাঠকের কাছে বিভিন্নভাবে ধরে দেবে। তবে এর চমৎকার সংলাপ বেশ সহজ ও ভাবসমৃদ্ধ। চরিত্রগুলো গম্ভীর না হলেও অকপট। তবে মকররাজ চরিত্রটা বেশ আলাদা; তাকে বোঝাও কঠিন। একইসাথে সে রাবণ ও বিভীষণের প্রতীক। তবে তার শাসনক্লান্ত, মুক্তিকামী চরিত্রটা শুধু নন্দিনীর সামনেই প্রকাশ পায়।
যে সময়টায় লেখা নাটকটা তখন সমাজ কৃষিভিত্তিক থেকে শিল্পনির্ভর হয়ে উঠছিল। এই শিল্পায়ন সব সভ্যতায় একটা বিরাট পরিবর্তন আনে‌। নাটকটায় রবীন্দ্রনাথ সম্ভবত প্রাচীন কৃষিভিত্তিক সমাজের স্বাধীনতার বিপরীতে কলকারখানার শোষণের সংস্কৃতির দ্বন্দ্ব তুলে ধরেছেন। নাটকটায় থাকা ‘পৌষ তোদের ডাক দিয়েছে’ গানটা থেকে এই ধারণা। তবে স্থির সিদ্ধান্তে আসার বয়স, অভিজ্ঞতা, জ্ঞান আমার হয়নি বলে ধোঁয়াশায় রইলাম।

মহাকাল এক শতকে লুঙ্গি পরলে পরের শতকে হয়তো বদলে হাফপ্যান্ট পরে। খোসাটা ছাড়িয়ে দেখা গেলে তাকে আর চিনতে ভুল হয় না। রক্তকরবী নিঃসন্দেহে কালোত্তীর্ণ নাটক। মার্কিন ট্রিকলডাউন ইকোনমির প্রবক্তা থেকে শুরু করে আমাদের আমলাতন্ত্র আর আলেমতন্ত্র, সবকিছুকেই খুঁজে পাওয়া যাবে এখানে। মুগ্ধ হলাম।

এধরণের বই পড়ার সময় সঠিক মুডে থাকা খুব বেশি প্রয়োজনীয়। যেটায় আমি ছিলাম না। তারওপর নাট্যসাহিত্য পড়ার জন্য ভীষণ কঠিন একটা বিষয়। কারণ নাটকের তৈরি ই করা হয় দর্শক শ্রেণীর কথা ভেবে।

এইসব নানা অজুহাতই হোক আর আমার পাঠক হিসেবে এখনও এধরণের রস উপভোগের সামর্থ্যের অভাবই হোক, আমি এই নাটক ঠিক বুঝতে পারিনি। অথবা বুঝতে কিছুটা পারলেও উপভোগ করতে পারি নি একদমই। এসব বুক ফুলিয়ে বলার কথা নয় এবং আমি বুঝতে পারি নি বলে আমার খুব একটা ভালোও লাগছে না।

এখন রেটিং দিব না। আবার পড়ব, যেদিন বুঝার মতো সামর্থ্য হবে। রেটিং দেয়ার কাজ আপাতত তোলা থাকুক।

এই নাটকটির সঙ্গে আমার পরিচয় হয় সিভিল সার্ভিসে পরীক্ষায় বসার সময়। ছকে-বাঁধা নানা প্রশ্নের উত্তর লিখতে গিয়ে নাটকটা নিয়ে বহু প্রাবন্ধিক, কবি, ও নাট্যকারের লেখা পড়তে হয়েছিল। তখনই বুঝতে পেরেছিলাম, রূপক আর চিত্রকল্পের সমন্বয়ে গড়ে তোলা এই লেখা একইসঙ্গে অনেক কিছু বলেছে। প্রেম-অপ্রেম, নগর-গ্রাম, কৃষি-শিল্প, বন্ধন-মুক্তি এমন অজস্র আপাতভাবে ম্যানিকিয়ান ডুয়ালিজমের অন্তরালে এই নাটক আসলে অজস্র অন্তর্বিরোধে ভরা মানবমনের গল্প বলেছে। নন্দিনী আসলে আমাদের মন, যার চারপাশে সর্দার থেকে বিশু পাগল, রাজা থেকে রঞ্জন, এমন অজস্র বিপ্রতীপ ঢেউ ঘুরপাক খেয়েছে, একে অপরকে আঘাত করেছে। শুধু নাটকের শেষে এই কথাটা আমাদেরই বুঝে নিতে বলা হয়েছে যে, আমরা ওই অত্যন্ত জটিল জালের কোন দিকে দাঁড়িয়ে আছি।
গগনেন্দ্রনাথের আরও অনেক ছবি থাকা উচিত ছিল এই টেক্সটের সঙ্গে, কারণ আমাদের কীলকাবদ্ধ দিনযাপন ফুটিয়ে তোলায় উনিই সেরা। তবে সে আমার ব্যক্তিগত আক্ষেপ।

অসম্ভব ভালো লেগেছে বইটা! প্রত্যেকটা ডায়ালগ ভীষণ গভীর আর ভীষণ অর্থপূর্ণ।

নন্দিনী আর রাজা চরিত্রটা ভীষণ ভালো লেগেছে আমার। রঞ্জন চরিত্রটাকে আরেকটু ফুটিয়ে তোলা যেত হয়তো, মনে হল গোটা নাটকজুড়ে সে পেছনেই রয়ে গেল শুধু।

ছোট একটা নাটক অথচ কি সুন্দরভাবেই না প্রতীক, রূপক আর সংকেতের মাধ্যমে আধুনিক জীবনের সমস্যাকে তুলে ধরেছেন নাট্যকার! যক্ষপুরীর কাহিনী হয়েও তাই নাটকটি বর্তমান ধনতান্ত্রিক যন্ত্রসভ্যতার প্রতিটা দেশের কাহিনী, যন্ত্রের উপর প্রকৃতির জয়ের অনবদ্য আখ্যান।

যক্ষপুরীকে নাট্যকার এমন এক দেশরূপে এঁকেছেন যেখানে মানুষ শুধু কাজ আর যন্ত্রের পিছনেই ছোটে, রাজা সোনার তাল দিয়ে ঘর ভর্তি করেন, শ্রমিকরা সারাদিন কাজের পর সন্ধ্যায় মদের নেশায় ডুবে থাকে। তাদের জীবনে অবকাশ নেই, আনন্দ নেই, আকাশ দেখার ফুসরত নেই, ফুল-ফল-প্রকৃতির রূপ তাদের অচেনা। যেখানে মানুষ নিজ নামে নয় বরং পরিচিত হয় তার সংখ্যা বা পদবি দ্বারা, যেখানে রাজার কথাই শেষ কথা, রাজা যেখানে মানুষকে ছেঁকে খনির কাজের উপযুক্ত করে। সেখানে রাজার লোভের কোনো শেষ নেই, তাইতো প্রজাদের মতো রাজাও বঞ্চিত প্রকৃতি থেকে, যন্ত্র দ্বারা চালিত সে, লোভ দ্বারা বদ্ধ সে। বেশিরভাগ শ্রমিক বাধ্য হয়ে সেখানে কাজ করলেও অনেকে আছে যারা সোনার লোভেও সেখানে কাজ করে, রাজার আছে ‘মাথা কেনা' অধ্যাপকের দল যারা মানুষকে বানিয়ে তোলে যন্ত্রের দাস, আছে যাজকবাহিনী যারা ধর্মের নামে মানুষকে রাখে পদানত। কিন্তু একদিন সেখানে আসে নন্দিনী, আসে প্রেম নিয়ে, ভালোবাসা নিয়ে, প্রকৃতির রূপ নিয়ে, তার কানে-গলায় রক্তকরবী ফুল সবাইকে মনে করিয়ে দেয় প্রকৃতির কথা। আর আছে রঞ্জন, যারা একত্রে সকল অনিয়মকে অস্বীকার করে, মানুষকে যন্ত্রের পরিবর্তে প্রকৃতির গান শোনায়। তাইতো একসময় রাজাও পরিবর্তিত হয় কিন্তু সর্দারের দলের তাহলে তো বিস্তর ক্ষতি, তাইতো শুরু হয় যন্ত্র আর প্রকৃতির লড়াই।

বিংশ শতাব্দীর প্রথমদিকে লেখা এই নাটকটিতে নাট্যকারের সমাজ ও প্রকৃতি ভাবনা স্পষ্ট হয়। তিনি দেখান বর্তমান কারখানা জীবনের বদ্ধ মানবজীবনকে, দেখান লোভী রাজাকে যারা লোভের বশবর্তী হয়ে মনুষ্যত্ব হারিয়ে রূপান���তরিত হয় একেকটা যন্ত্রে। কিন্তু লেখক আশাবাদী ,তাইতো তিনি সৃষ্টি করেন নন্দিনী চরিত্রটি যে হাজির হয় প্রেম, প্রাণ ও প্রকৃতিকে নিয়ে যার মাধ্যমে স্বয়ং যন্ত্র সভ্যতার ধারক লোভী রাজাকে নিয়ে আসেন প্রকৃতির পথে। কিন্তু তিনি যে যন্ত্রের বিরোধী নয় বরং যন্ত্রের মানুষের প্রভু হওয়ার বিরোধী তাও স্পষ্ট হয় নন্দিনী আর রাজার কথায় তাইতো নন্দিনী রাজাকে শুধু পৃথিবীর বুক চিরে খনিজ সম্পদ তুলে পৃথিবীর অভিসম্পাত নেওয়ার পরিবর্তে পরামর্শ দেয় পৃথিবীর বুক থেকে পৃথিবীর দান ফসল ফলাতে। মোটকথা রবীন্দ্রনাথ নাটকটিতে প্রতীক ও রূপকের সাহায্যে একদিকে যেমন বর্তমান সভ্যতার এক অন্ধকার দিক তুলে ধরেন ঠিক তেমনি রক্তকরবীর মাধ্যমে অপরাজেয় প্রেম ও প্রাণের জয়ও ঘোষণা করেন।

Before you hastily rush to Amazon and add this to your cart because: a) It's a play; (b) It's by Tagore—hear me out! Red Oleanders isn't for everybody!


Indeed just a scroll in the Goodreads review section will tell you, people disliked it more than they liked it and reason for that is:
1. It's too abrupt;
2. There are no cues to when one actor enters and what the setting is;
3.It's supposed to be a One Act Play but that seems like a mistake instead of a deliberation;
4. It makes NO BLOODY SENSE!

Well, that's what an average review on Goodreads will tell you. However, what they don't tell you is: This is the world of Abstract, baby!

Does Waiting for Godot make sense? Do you try to fathom what it means? If not, why not? Because that's the beauty of it!

What, then, makes you look for meaning in Red Oleanders? What is Nandini? She could be a person, a witch, a wave, a revolution. She could be the whole wave of Communism for all she's worth—the play was written in 1925, for Heaven's sake!

What is Ranjan? An inspiration, an idea, the spirit of revolution, a martyr or a lover.


You can't read this play with a single idea in mind! It belittles religion, preaches truth and beauty, mocks the system, laughs at the hollowness of organisation and law and is at once political, spiritual, romantic and revolutionary.

It's so simple and yet so poignant, with so many layers to it—much like a red oleander flower!

My advice to you: Don't read it if you like to be led by the hand and interpret exactly what the author wants you to interpret.


This play is all about reading between the lines! And you're welcome to interpret it exactly the way you like, with just the very themes it inspires in your mind!

রবীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুর যে প্রত্যেক জায়গায় সিদ্ধহস্ত তা এই নাটকেই আবার প্রমাণ হলো।সমাজের দর্পণ হিসেবে নাটকটি আকর্ষণীয়। রাজনৈতিক আর সামাজিক পটভূমির উপর ভিত্তিতে নাটকটি যজ্ঞপুর নামক এমন এক এলাকাকে দেখায় যেখানে অনেক মানুষ কিছু মানুষের দাস হয়ে মানবেতর জীবন যাপন করছে যাদের কিশোর,ফাগুলাল,নন্দা দ্বারা চরিত্রায়িত।এই মানুষগুলাই সেখানকার সব কাজ করে কিন্তু থাকে অনেক কষ্টে যেখানে ভাল থাকা দরকার ছিল। কিছু মানুষ কাজ না করেই এদের উপরের শ্রেণী বলে তারা সুবিধা ভোগ করে এবং বিভিন্ন ভাবে এই শোষণকে অব্যাহত রাখতে চাই সেটা ধর্ম, বিজ্ঞান বা ক্ষমতা দিয়ে হোক না কেন।সর্দার, মোড়ল,গোস্বামী,অধ্যাপক বিভিন্ন ক্ষেত্রে সেই শোষণক্ষেত্রকে টিকিয়ে রাখে এবং সাধারণ জনগণদের ভুলিয়ে নিজেদের স্বার্থ উদ্ধার করে।নন্দিনী যে কিনা মূল চরিত্র এমন একজন যে এই শোষণযুক্ত মানবেতর জীবনের মধ্যেও সাম্য আর সুন্দর পৃথিবীর আশা খোজে। রঞ্জন চরিত্রকে দেখতে পাওয়া না গেলেও এটি সেই সাম্যের পৃথিবীতে নিয়ে যাওয়ার প্রতীক আর বিশু চরিত্রটি এর বাহক বা যারা পথ দেখাবে।অনেক ভালই লেগেছে নাটকটা।আসলেই আমার কাছে সেরার কাতারে পড়ার মত রবী ঠাকুরের কাজের মধ্যে।

The central character Nandini is a lie, a false portrayal of womanhood as well as of humanity, who is made famous for her childish spontaneity, attributions of unquestioned simplicity which is actually possible only in cases of mental retardation. Such a woman being desired by all grown up men at different levels portrays a designed conformity to patriarchal norms for beauty, power, and excellence, which is non threatening to men. The play not even challenges any institutional learning. The choice of creating Nandini is such way stands for unquestioned self acceptance of the protagonist which is practically the foreclosure of human development. The character is also an impossible mean for any change, revolution be a distant dream. The play neither does justice to men, not to women, or to revolution. The play could not handle womanhood and took shelter in the defense of denial by making the character of Nandini totally fake. The play is an intellectual cheat for me.

The first play of Tagore I ever read. I was young, perhaps 14 when I read it. It engaged me, but went completely over my head. Upon re reading it many years later, I was struck by the beautiful metaphors used to tell the story.

This drama is considered one of the best dramas of Rabindronath Tagore. It stood equally and took a spot with the then writers of the western culture.

Ronjon and Nandini are needed everywhere. This world is cruel for everyone and people have the tendency to suppress others. Shutting up the weaker's mouth is easier for their vulnerable and fragile nature .But one needs to learn, needs to grow,and needs to understand the opposite of the world. This society's power- obsessed always tries to oppress those who dare to raise questions, deny to bow to the tyranny. Freedom is something that can be gained through crucial sacrifices. But Ronjon and Nandini show the path to embrace justice.

Their love and support for each other, Rising awareness in others, encouraging them to fight for their rights shows tyranny can't stay long.

Points that I found interesting in this play is how Tagore uses various characters to illustrate qualities of humanity, the use of class distrust and the symbolic elements. At the end, when the curtain falls, I was both confused and grateful to be done.

Bishu: "I know the atmosphere of this place breeds contempt for beauty. There must be beauty even in hell; but nobody there can understand it, that's their cruellest punishment." p39

Professor: "It's no use getting annoyed with a principle. Principles are neither good nor bad. That which happens does happen. To go against it, is to knock your head against the law of being." p112

Nandini is the spirit of liberation and Ranjan is the spirit of life. The play set in the gold mines of Yaksha Town portrays exploitation, sub-human existence and the tyranny of safety. The death of Ranjan liberates the King, a symbol of suppressed human potential, from the Governors and sparks the revolution of the diggers. Tagore's writing makes you experience every scene and you have to find which character you are - are you Bishu, Phagulal or Chandra?

In a town infested with greed and exploitation, Nandini, the protagonist of the play, proves that the highest expression of life is in love, which she manifests for her beloved Ranjan. Although strong in its ideas and symbols, the overall narrative felt weak and, at times, abrupt. The play was translated into English by the great master himself.

Deceptively simple

নাটকের সবচেয়ে পছন্দের ব্যাপার— পুরো 'রবীন্দ্রনাথ জনরা'র-ই বোধহয়— হলো এর কাব্যিক, গীতময় বাক্যগুলো! কী ইতিবাচক, কী নেতিবাচক চরিত্র! সবার উক্তিই আত্মীকৃত করতে ইচ্ছা হয়!
তবে, এই রূপক-সাংকেতিক নাটকটা নিয়ে সমালোকদের মাঝেই নানারকম দ্বিধা আছে, ব্যাখ্যা আছে! আমি তো নাদান! সেসবের চিন্তায় না-যাই!

Red Oleanders is a dystopian drama, set in a small town Yaskhapuri, which serves as the background to the exploitation of indoctrinated civilisation.
I really liked the contrast between Nandini, bustling with life, and the civilians, dull and dead within. The drama allows one to give a serious look to the psychological impact of drudgery, which is, in totality, meaningless.
The residents of Yaksha Town are evidently brainwashed and in essence, they are merely enjoying materialistic gains and forgetting that they have a life. The best line, in my opinion, was "liberty was the worst form of bondage", and this comes after Bishu's revelation of what a repressed and oppressed life he had all his life.
Nandani is fearless; she's illustrated as a symbol of rebellion and a ray of light and hope.
She gives the meaningless meaning. She sparks the fight. She breaks the web.
It's a beautifully written drama by Tagore.
However, it may be unclear to some audiences.
