A fresh, bold take on grief—innovative and unforgettableDeeply emotional, deeply personal—yet universally relatablePerfect for those struggling with loss or seeking powerful, moving poetryA debut that will haunt you long after you turn the last page You will break. You will ache. But you will not be alone.
I picked this one up on KU and couldn't put it down!
Time Changes Nothing is not just a collection of poems and memories, it’s a confession, a reckoning, and a hand reaching out from the dark saying “you’re not alone.”
Every page carries an ache that feels lived-in, not written. The way Kimberly threads grief through everyday images, cooking, gardening, drawing, grounds the pain in something heartbreakingly human. Her words sit heavy, but they also breathe. You feel her exhaustion, her anger, her tenderness, and somehow, her hope.
The illustrations are quietly devastating. Simple lines that hold entire lives. They make the poems real in a way that words alone couldn’t.
This isn’t poetry about moving on; it’s about learning to exist with what stays. As she writes: “It gets better. I swear it does. And even if it can’t get better, it just gets different.”
Time Changes Nothing is for anyone who’s lost a parent, a best friend, or a part of themselves and has learned that healing doesn’t mean forgetting. It means remembering differently.
I judge poetry so hard because I too, write poetry.. so when I read poems, I take my time on them to break them down and find the pacing the author is conducting.. it took me awhile to read Kimberly's book. She has a vass understanding of emotional depth, especially when it revolves around loss and heartbreak. You can tell the loss of her father shook her to her core, and how she coped with it was getting lost in the words she laid upon the paper. If you are personally struggling with heartache, grieving over a loved one, or just in a darker mindspace and needing to know others feel your sorrow and loss, this poetry book is perfect for you. Kimberly lays it all out for her readers, not holding back in her pain, sorrow, and despair.. her humanity opens doors to a coping field for herself and those along for the journey.
It feels a little weird rating the book only because it's about the processing of grief, which much like poetry is a highly subjective and personal experience. It almost feels like rating how well she is grieving and that feels like an icky thing to do. So I'm rating based on how deeply I connected to her and her words.
There are trigger warnings for death and loss, so know that going in.
Throughout this book you'll read some beautiful, incredibly moving, often heartbreaking poetry as Kimberly expresses her deep and profound experience with grief after losing her father. There are also a few contributions from her family and children by way of art or their own words. It was clear that her father was a well loved man. You can feel that love dance from page to page, word to word, picture to picture. It is such a beautiful way to honor that, and him. ❤️
A book of poetry with the theme of losing a loved one. I read this book through the lense of losing my mother suddenly and unexpectedly. It’s raw and unapologetically real prose touched my heart as well as made me feel like I wasn’t alone. In a grief journey, you experience so many emotions that you don’t truly know until you’ve been touched by trauma. This book takes you through them all in such a way that you can feel the author’s eyes. The little illustrations throughout the book were such a pleasant surprise and helped you really experience the journey.
This was an amazing book it wasn’t what I was expecting however much better thank you for sharing your experience and feelings with a topic that’s so hard and frequently not talked about enough
