A native of Atlanta, Georgia, Philip Yancey earned graduate degrees in Communications and English from Wheaton College Graduate School and the University of Chicago. He joined the staff of Campus Life Magazine in 1971, and worked there as Editor and then Publisher. He looks on those years with gratitude, because teenagers are demanding readers, and writing for them taught him a lasting principle: The reader is in control!
In 1978 Philip Yancey became a full-time writer, initially working as a journalist for such varied publications as Reader’s Digest, Publisher’s Weekly, National Wildlife, Christian Century and The Reformed Journal. For several years he contributed a monthly column to Christianity Today magazine, where he also served as Editor at Large.
In 2021 Philip released two new books: A Companion in Crisis and his long-awaited memoir, Where the Light Fell. Other favorites included in his more than twenty-five titles are: Where Is God When It Hurts, The Student Bible, and Disappointment with God. Philip's books have won thirteen Gold Medallion Awards from the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association, have sold more than seventeen million copies, and have been published in over 50 languages. Christian bookstore managers selected The Jesus I Never Knew as the 1996 Book of the Year, and in 1998 What’s So Amazing About Grace? won the same award. His other recent books are Fearfully and Wonderfully: The Marvel of Bearing God’s Image; Vanishing Grace: Bringing Good News to a Deeply Divided World; The Question that Never Goes Away; What Good Is God?; Prayer: Does It Make Any Difference?; Soul Survivor; and Reaching for the Invisible God. In 2009 a daily reader was published, compiled from excerpts of his work: Grace Notes.
The Yanceys lived in downtown Chicago for many years before moving to a very different environment in Colorado. Together they enjoy mountain climbing, skiing, hiking, and all the other delights of the Rocky Mountains.
The Bible Revealed would make an awesome reading tool while reading the Bible this coming up year. In this book. Philip Yancey and Brenda Quinn do a phenomenal job structuring the reading guide into a 365 day guide to use while journeying through the Bible. In this book you starting by reading the daily scripture passage, then read the commentary by the authors, and then my favorite part, there is a question at the end called Daily Contemplation that challenges you to think not only about what you read but to take action steps to help grow in your faith.
I like that it covers the entire Bible and would be good for newer Christians to the Bible or seasoned Christians who have read the Bible for a while. With the daily breakups in the reading plan, it makes it easier to digest chunks of scripture at a time to help retain what you are learning. Yancey is known for his engaging writing style and very thoughtful commentary and reflections from past reads of his and this book is very much along those lines as well.
The one thing some may not like is it feels like a devotional with how it is set up. This is not a book with deep theological readings and definitely not a resource for some detailed historical background. I love the book for what it is and can tell you, all readers will get some very valuable insight with this book overall.
Great book overall. I received a complimentary copy of this book from NetGalley and Thomas Nelson and Zondervan Gift. All opinions are my own.
The Bible Revealed by Philip Yancey and Brenda Quinn
A great resource for those wanting to cover the highlights of the Bible in a year.
In the past, I've done the read the Bible in one year challenges. I always felt like I had too much to cover each day to really digest everything. I love that this devotional covers the main concepts without having to slog through all of the so-&-so begat so-&-so begat so-&-so, etc. Yes, those topics are important, too, but I don't always have the capacity to read through everything with discernment and really reflect on the most important points.
The brief discussions bring insightful perspectives to the daily reading. I also appreciate that this devotional is numbered (ie Day 1) instead of titled by a date (ie Jan 1st). It's a small thing, but when I inevitably miss a day, I don't feel guilty or like I have to cram in extra readings to make up for it. I just pick up where I left off.
5/5 stars. Great for anyone who wants to develop a daily habit, but doesn't know where to start.
Thank you to NetGalley for the opportunity to review the eARC of this book. All opinions are my own.
The Bible Revealed is a 365-Day Guided Journey Through God's Word in devotional style by Philip Yancey and Brenda Quinn. There is a Scripture passage along with a written devotional explaining the passage while also making it relevant to life today. One of my favorite parts is the Daily Contemplation question at the end of each day’s devotional giving the reader something to think about for the rest of the day.
While the book covers the entire Bible from Genesis to Revelation it cannot go in depth on all of the Bible. Take the life of David for example, it focuses on the main parts of his life but does not cover everything that the Bible tells you about David. A side note, I did especially like how Psalms, which David wrote most, was included in the days of his life being covered. This overview seems practical so that at the end of the year, a person will have a great idea of all that is contained in the Bible. In addition, this devotional is not geared to men or women but to all. The Bible Revealed is a great tool for those predominantly new to reading the Bible.
I enjoyed skimming this. It was (understandably) light on details, being more of an overview than anything, and that was clearly stated from the get-go. It felt a bit more surface level than I was going for at this point, but I do think it will speak to a lot of people, and its broadness will do it favors toward that end.
I received an eARC of the book from the publisher via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
Another book I didn’t know I needed. The authors has broken down the Bible for Dailey scripture readings and have give their interpretations of the Bible verse. I like how they give a contemplative thought at the end of each day. This is a book I will continually use. ARC provided by Netgalley for a honest review, all thoughts and opinions are my own.
A daily devotional that can, at times, highlight certain passages, while giving good information on what they want your focus on, as well as a wonderful 'daily contemplation' question that leaves you pondering the passage throughout your day. Love this style and highly recommend! *I received a copy of this book from NetGalley. This review is my own opinion*
Unique and Interesting daily devotional and meditation which takes you on a journey the books if the Bible. If you are looking for a daily devotional that is devoted to a journey through scriptures this is the book for you.
